Show Notes Transcript

John deals with a post-Covid, Peter Brady crack in his voice (forgive us) but offers up some solid TV suggestions. KG mourns the end of another tough Wild season, but celebrates the Kentucky Derby and the opening of Canterbury. We reflect on culinary highlights from NHL travel and Steve reflects on his culinary highlights during his active touring days with Johnny Clueless.

Oh, it's the best. Steve, When you were, um, a touring, uh,, rock star, what were some of your, uh,, culinary highlights? Would you guys eat out ever, or were you... Too busy, uh, beating off the chicks. No, really, we should have been sponsored by Subway as a band. That's the saddest thing I've ever heard. Oh, it's the truth though. We're, you know, traveling, this is not a tour bus, this is a van. You know, and you get a little moment to get away from being elbow length from everybody. Um, we collect, remember when they had the stickers? Subway stickers. Yeah. We used to collect those. This is not exactly where I was hoping this would go. So we'd pull into a Subway. Each of us had a stick, one of those little things. We'd get a six, each of us inch sandwich. They'd make no money. We decided we should have been sponsored by Subway. Um, no, uh, that would have been fun Welcome to the Kindness Chronicles, where we hope to inject the world with a dose of the Minnesota nice that it desperately needs. Uh, it was COVID week for me last week, fellas. Welcome back. Oof. Yeah, I, uh... Man, I'm glad you're feeling better. You didn't sound good last week, dude. No, it was, uh, it was my third time at COVID, so I'm getting pretty good at this. Ha! Geez! I don't mind the week off, to be honest with you. Um, I was able to catch up on a whole bunch of television, which is kind of what I'd like to talk about today, if that's possible, but, uh, you know, Kevin, we always like to start with a, uh, where in the world is KG, um, now that the, uh, the hockey season has sadly come to a close, what you got going on? There's a big race this weekend, right? Yes. Yeah. Happy Kentucky Derby week. I guess that's the silver lining. I'm supposed to be. Right now, in downtown St. Paul, uh, getting wired up on the, uh, the wild bench, ready for pre game warm up. This was supposed to be game one. Kraken would have been in town. The Kraken. Yeah, it's, uh... And instead, you're here with us. In the derby. Oh. Instead, you're stuck with us. Oh, you guys are fun to be stuck with, but I'd rather be working at the rink. We could have worked the podcast around the wild schedule. But anyway, disappointing finish. Um... Hockey season is a, it's so much fun and when it comes to then it's always so abrupt and you have your, you know, your work family, you guys have, you know, you've got the same thing on your line of work over the years and when it comes to an end, you just go your separate ways and it's kind of a bummer. Yeah, anybody, uh, not expected to be back next year? I think it's going to be really hard for the Wild to afford Matt Dumba. And that'll be, that'll be tough for all of us that have worked with him because he's such a great dude. Um, it'll be tough for the Wild fans because he's, he's really been a fan favorite. And, and, uh, he's been here since, well, over a decade, 11 years since he started his NHL career. And he's been such a big part of the community doing so much work behind the scenes. You know, we, we do the Kindness Chronicles here and Matt's one of those guys that lives it out. Uh, with his charitable stuff that he does and, you know, um, With the Souter and Parisi buyouts going up these next couple of years, Bill Guerin is going to be a little, uh, hamstrung with, you know, 14 million of dead cap space, and there's just no way they can afford Dumba. And he'll be a hot commodity because he really had one of his best years this year, and after a couple of probably subpar years in his eyes, he was phenomenal. So, um, that, that'll be tough. And I think the team will look a little different. They just, uh, announced this week that they, they did get Marcus Johansson signed to a two year deal. So that was very team friendly. So. Being at the WOW, they're playing in Sweden next year, and uh, they're trying to lock up as many Swedes as they can for that trip. I think it's cool that they got him assigned because he's a great player. What do you mean they're going to Sweden? They have an actual game? They're playing in the NHL, uh, International Series next, uh, November. They're going to be playing two games over there. They're going to play the Maple Leafs and the Ottawa Senators. And, you know, it's kind of cool because... You know, but while they're going to have five or six guys on that roster that hail from Sweden, Ek, Rodin, Johansson, Gustafsson, these are key guys and they're going to play in Stockholm. It's going to be a lot of fun. Very fun. And, uh, we had talked earlier, uh, Losing Ack had to have been, that had to have been just about what put him, put him out of contention. I think when that happened, it was always going to be tough because Dallas has a great team. But when that injury happened, uh, in the final couple weeks of the season, I think most of the, the hockey pundits here that really know the game, the Lou Nannies and, and uh, the Wes Walls and Ryan Carters all said the same thing. Kaprizov is your best player. But Jewel, Eric might be your most impactful player. He's your best face off guy. Yeah, that's for sure. He's a penalty killed guy. He's your power play guy. And he anchors that second line that was on fire. And Matt Bold never really recovered. When left the line his scoring. Basically dried up and you know, you think about the wild and where they're weak and one area that comes to mind is that center position. So when you take your, your best center of the lineup, you match up against a team like Dallas. There has so many good centers. Um, that, you know, again, no one's making excuses. The Wild had a 2 1 lead in the series. I let it get away, but, but Dallas, I think, was the better team. Well, I am especially excited for the fact that, uh, Marc Andre Fleury wants to come back, even as a backup, which, as a, uh, Minnesotan, You know how much we love it when we hear that people love being here. I mean, we don't care if you can't stop a puck, but you like us and that makes us happy. Dammit. Yeah. What, what is with us? We love it. Well, I think part of it is we're so, and I hate to say this, but we're all so wounded from our, our setbacks on the playing field or on the rink, you know, or in the gym. Our teams have struggled so much in the playoffs. And the fact that people. Take shots at us. And I listened to some national radio here the last couple of days. And, you know, Minnesota's got the longest route since they've been to a championship game. And since 91, since we've been to a Superbowl, Stanley Cup, you name it. And I think we have to have something to cling on to. And we're hardy folks because we can handle all this tough weather. We, we deal with, especially, uh, I'm not sure I'm hardy anymore. Well, you obviously have a weakness to a COVID 19. Yeah. How about that? Yeah. Let's talk about that. It's part of that due to where you are. And, and what you do with, you know, everyday work, because... No, I think mostly it has to do with the fact that I have a very low threshold for discomfort. And most people can just kind of go, you know, they can just deal with it. Your body's revolting. It is. I like to spend more time in the fetal position. Um, good news is, um, this one had a, uh, a gastrointestinal situation. So my pants are a lot more comfortable than they were. Yeah, I, I, I, honestly I lost like 10 pounds. You look good. I, I, I, I do look good. I'll put my shirt back on, hold on for a second. Oh no. Yeah, sorry about that. Um, I, what I wanted to talk about because it's what I know best right now. Is the current state of television, as I understand it the writers in Hollywood recently went on strike. Yeah, I just heard about that too. I didn't realize it. It just happened, but prior to that, um, I've had some time to watch some television. You're soaking it in. I've been soaking it in, and I want to talk specifically about a couple of shows. Okay. That have warmed my heart and I'm wondering if you guys have seen the shows. I'm sort of springing this on you Okay, but I want to start with the show called jury duty Either of you seen jury duty only because you sent us the clips that I I know that's that's that how this is supposed Oh, sorry. Oh, sorry. No, tell us about that show John. So Yeah, tell us more, John. So, I did, my son Jack called and he said, Hey, you gotta watch this show, Jury Dude. I'm like, what's it about? Well, apparently, Another court drama? No, it's sort of in the style of The Office. Yeah, kinda. So, it's kind of a documentary style. Very real looking. Um, apparently there was an ad that was put onto Craigslist, and into a number of Hollywood, uh, magazines. Okay. Asking for people to, um, consider serving on a jury, but the, they were going to, do a documentary of a behind the scenes of what it's like in an American jury. None of them, had any idea that this whole thing was a setup. Everybody on the jury, the judges, the attorneys, the plaintiff, the defendant, all of the jury pool, everyone was an actor. Except for this one guy and his name was Ronald Gladden. they absolutely struck gold with this guy. Yeah. He is like the sweetest human being you've ever encountered. It ties in with the show because he... At the very end of it. Well, I guess you got to see the whole thing, but it looks like it's very well done. And in the end of it, it ties together a lot of kindness and a lot of like heart the guy has. He showed a lot of heart. Yeah, I heard it described as the Truman show meets the office. And I think that that's a perfect description. But it's using like a courtroom. And look, the cameras are exactly like out of a, out of a court. Right, right. Like C SPAN court drama. That's... Drama, not, not a show, but a real... Court cameras and that's what made it real and and if and I've only peeked at it you guys But the key to the whole thing is the actor that's the most famous and the only real recognizable actor It's the Marston guy, James Marston, from the Notebook. And he, to me, is the linchpin to the whole thing. The comedy that involves him is the best. Well, there's a great line, so Ronald sort of, sort of recognizes him, and he says, Oh, you're the guy that's in, um, X Men. And he goes, yeah, and he goes, in the Notebook. And he looks at him and says, The notebook? Which guy are you in the notebook? I was the other guy. And at the very end of the show, James is not feeling good about his, you know, his place, and he goes, I was in the notebook, but I wasn't even the guy that was in the notebook. I was the other guy in the notebook. And he was just so, such an amplified version of himself. A lot of jokes are picked toward him. Oh, absolutely. The judge was really interesting, and really well. He had like a Midwestern accent. He was really stern and really serious. And the judge was an attorney in real life. Yeah, you could tell he knew what he was talking about. But at one point he goes... Marsden, standing up, he says, well, I'm an actor. I'm a well known actor. Recognized. Yeah. Recognized actor. Yeah, and he goes, well, I don't know who you are. And it just was so deflating. He just was great. It looks really interesting, and I think people are going to like it. Even just the trailer, the pacing looked really fun. Oh, yeah. It looked really good. Someone, someone smarts put this together. Very. It looks cool. And looks sweet too, like in the very last show, in the very last show, they have the reveal and they show a behind the scenes, the courtroom that's across the hallway from the courtroom that the show was taped in was like a production studio. Yeah, I saw that and they had all these people in there. It was clearly during covid because they've all got masks on and that whole deal. But, uh. My favorite part of the first episode, and it's, this isn't a spoiler because it's in the trailer, I've seen every episode. Oh, really? Watched all eight of them. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, I'm gonna watch it. What, what was your favorite part? There's this kind of dweeby guy, is uh, sitting next to Ronald, who's the, the prop, so to speak. He's the fall guy. And he says, um, hey, is there any way to get out of being in jury duty? And... And this Ronald says, well, you know, there's that one thing that Peter Griffin did on, Family Guy. He claims that he's racist, and that gets him out of it. so the judge is doing, uh, going around and they're picking the jurors, and they ask this guy, Is there any reason that you shouldn't be a part? He goes, Well, there is one. And he looks over at Ron, and Ron sort of quietly shakes his head, and he's like, Don't do it. Don't say it. And he goes, Well, I'm racist. And, all of a sudden they go, there's like a couple of Just like a racist person would say. Yeah, there's a couple of black people that are part of the jury and they have this look on their face like, Are you kidding me? Yeah, yeah. And then he's like, I shouldn't have said that. But it was just, I'm telling ya, one of the most heartwarming shows I've seen in a long time. And I encourage everybody to It looks funny too. It's super funny. It's super funny. And this guy is just, is so sweet. So, so here's the thing, John. He seems like a great guy. How are they going to ever do, if it becomes a hit, how are they going to do another episode? Or another season? So, I, uh, have been, uh, contemplating that question. Okay, yeah. In your slumber? In your rest? I've had a lot of time to, uh, consider the questions of the universe. What about the strike? Is it, is it going to last? I mean, there's so much money at stake here. I haven't really dove into the... I don't know. You know, issues at hand. It's not going to last a long time, I hope. I, I would hope not because, uh, you know, I'm planning on getting sick again in June. What am I going to do all June if there's not new TV? There's only so much Fox News one guy can watch without wanting to hang himself. Yeah, exactly. Um, another show. That I, uh, have, have, I was originally kind of disappointed in how the season started. But, uh, it, it got me in tears. And I'm not too, I'm a softy. Uh, Ted Lasso, have you seen the latest season of Ted Lasso? I have been up to date. I have not. Now, KG, have you watched any of Ted Lasso? I've watched about half of the ones that are available and I really like it. I've just... It's a hockey season. I kind of fell off the wagon there a little bit. What are your impressions of Ted Lasso? My impressions are, uh, I heard all about it. Heard to check it out the first season, like whenever, very beginning. I was watching it. My wife from the other room was doing some something and she's like, what are you watching? And she comes in, she's like, this looks really dumb. She was saying, I'm like, I'm like end of it. I'm kind of like, you know, wiping away a couple like, you know, like, are you watching? This is us again? No, and then, uh, and then I, I kept watching every week and then she heard from somebody how good it was. And so she jumped on and she's like, okay, we're starting it over and we love it every week. It's so great. It I think it kind of fell off a little bit. Um, a couple things have kind of dropped a little bit. It gets almost cutesy and like, okay, but You, I think maybe because it's in England, you, you sort of just want to jump into that world and leave our world and just live in that, live in that little cool community. Make everything seem great and you know, there, there's troubles and stuff but it's not, it just feels like a safe, fake world you want to live in. Um, but I think that it's written really well and just they take turns in a way that you think it's going to go a certain way. It's very expected and it goes a different way and it's, it's great. It's very well, well written and well acted and the, uh, the episode where, um, I don't know what else happened. There was a romance, um, Oh, the team that was, when they were in Amsterdam. When they were in Amsterdam. That was a, that was a really special episode. Oh my gosh. Very well done. It was so well done. And, um, once again, another show that, uh, highly recommended from A television expert and from, from, and from a kindness perspective, that's two shows. Well, that's why I'm bringing it up. Oh yeah. Okay, good. There are moments in those shows that just absolutely get you where it counts. And that's what we're trying to do here. Highlight those kinds of things aside from, um, getting into, uh, wild updates from Kevin, but I was thinking about some while he's talking and thinking. This guy's Kevin you're you're done with with this for the season We can tell how much you love it and week I can tell how much you love it because Kevin you basically grill him for the updates and You basically you want to know how much you actually can find out from him about this and yet he's done with the season He's not working, but yet he's still here He's doing he's digging into it trying to find out more and explain more about the wild You guys are such fans. You make me laugh. I can't I'm so impressed I think with most sports teams, you're either all in or you're just, it's hard to get real interested. And I think, you know, when, when I think it goes to another level, when you travel with them and you're with them September, October, November to say it's a good chunk of the year. I guess I am thankful though, that I have two completely different seasons. Like I've got hockey all winter and I've got Canterbury and the horses all summer. And this year it just kind of worked out where. The hockey season wrapped up and I'm working at Canterbury this coming weekend because it's the derby. There have been a lot of years when, you know, I don't get to work the derby and we do a party out there every year this year because the season ended when it did. I'm here. Last year, I was in St. Louis working part of that series when the Kentucky Derby happened and, you know, selfishly now that it's over, I'm excited to work the derby. But like I said, everybody just kind of goes their separate ways and you get. Into kind of a work family setting where you're spending so much time with the producer, the director, Oh yeah. LaPanta, Carter, all the guys that put the broadcast together, and It's just, there's no way of knowing when it's going to end, and when it comes to a halt, It's just like ripping a bandaid off. It happens quick and you're just like, okay, well that's it. So, uh, among the uh, the fellas on the uh, the hockey team, Um, who are you going to miss the most? Who will you miss for the season for the season? I know you're probably gonna miss them all and all that BS, but But there's always a few that you talk to more than others, like Marcus Foligno comes to mind, you know We'll chat about his kids and we'll chat about you know Everything but hockey when I bump into him. Flurry, you mentioned Marc Andre Flurry. I'm so enamored with this guy He's one of the all time great goalies and that's my old position. So I end up talking to him all the time. Those two probably stand out, but for me it's the coaches. Like I, I really um, love talking to Darby Hendrickson and Dean Emerson and that coaching staff. Um, they're phenomenal people and you get to kind of go behind the curtain. They trust us. They tell us things and it's just, it's really, It's, it's like no different than John getting locked into a reality TV show or a really good TV show like Jury Duty. You just can't wait for the next update, the next turn of events. Hockey season is a lot like a season of your favorite show and I just love the cadence of it. And, um, onto the Kentucky Derby, do, do I understand that there is a Canterbury horse and jockey that is going to be competing for the, uh, It's absolutely unbelievable. This never, ever happens. Um, yes. The last, uh, summer out of Canterbury, we run a race for the two year olds, and it's called the Shakopee Juvenile. And there's a horse that was based out of Chicago that came in because, you know, it's like a 100, 000 purse. So, you know, it's a decent race. And this horse shipped in and just destroyed the field. So I got to... Pat the horse in the winner's circle and interviewed Jarek Loveberry, his jockey, who used to ride full time at Canada Race. Oh, yeah. But now he's, he's moved his pack down to Chicago. And at that time, this was a sprint race, so nobody, I think, was thinking derby, but he looked like a really talented horse. Well, then he went to Churchill Downs in the fall, and he won a really big race. And now all of a sudden, he's on the radar for the derby, and he comes back in the, in the, in the winter slash spring here, goes to New Orleans. Runs a pretty good, uh, second, a pretty good third, and then wins a race in Kentucky, and now he's qualified for the Kentucky Derby. And so, this horse that raced at Canterbury, the jockey that is a Canterbury jockey, uh, owners from Chicago, really cool story. And, uh, they're in the Derby. His name is Two Phil. He's the three horse. He's going to be 12 to 15 to 1, so he'll be a long shot. And I legitimately, aside from the Canterbury connection, as I start to dive deep into this race, I actually think the horse can win like he's, he's got the credentials to get the job done. Now, anytime you throw 20 horses out there, which makes the Derby such an impossible race to handicap. My take is in the Derby, you can run this race 10 different times and get probably nine different winners because the traffic and the issues that pop up in a, in a split second, this is the only race. In America, we run with more than 14 horses, so 20 is a lot. And he's pinned down towards the inside. So his jockey is legitimately going to have to weave his way through traffic. But if he gets a good trip, he's got the credentials to win. And maybe our listeners can make a little money. Well, what's he called again? Two Phil, like two guys named Phil. He was named after two guys named Phil that were involved in picking out this horse. And, uh, it's, it's a really neat story. And when it's, I don't know when this, our, our show is going to be posted, but it'll be posted by Thursday. Is it, so is it, uh, Is the race Saturday or Sunday? Okay. Saturday, yeah, it's always the first Saturday in May. I'm gonna watch it. Um, yeah, it'll be on NBC. I think the race goes somewhere 5. 30, 6 o'clock in the afternoon and, and, uh, kind of fun to have a, uh, It's the mo local angle there. It's the most exciting two minutes in sports. Yeah. Isn't it? It, well, that's what it's called and, you know, Oh, I thought I just made that up. Damn it. Ha ha ha ha ha. Horse racing used to be like the NFL, right? Like in the In the 60s and 70s and even into the early 80s, it was such a big deal, uh, as far as on the national landscape. Now that's changed. It's become far more of a niche sport, but the Derby has stood the test of time. People will stop what they're doing Saturday to watch the Kentucky Derby. It is the most famous horse race in the world. And I do think it's kind of cool that The king is being coronated on, well, basically in the morning. Um, and he's taking over for his mom who was so into horse racing. So I think, and there's a horse in the race where you hunt betters out there called King's barn. So. It's just, again, another angle on top of two fills with the, uh, the coronation. I, I'm not into the, the royal family and all that to do, but I've got friends. I know John does as well that are into it. And, uh, if you're a huntsman or Kingsbarns could be the horse for you. That's happened in the same day. Oh yeah. Exactly. Same day. It's a big weekend. It's going to be historic. You've got two seasons. You've got hockey season and you've got horse racing season. Do you prefer one over the other? I don't. You just like the, the, the variety? Yeah, I like, I like having the, one I'm indoors and I'm traveling. I'm hopping on a plane. I'm packing up. I'm living out of a hotel suitcase and you like that. I do. I like the cadence of the season. I do like the restaurants. I love the restaurants. I love the movie theaters. I love I love going to another rink that like going to Montreal, going to Toronto, going to Madison Square Garden. I'm fascinated by the rinks and and all the different fields they have. So I love that aspect. But what I love about the summer is There's no travel. I'm outdoors most of the year in the sun working at Canterbury, and it's not nearly as stressful like the hockey season. There's more stress involved. The horse racing is a little more chill. And I'm very, very lucky that I have these two. Distinct season. KG's like a touring rock star, a seasonal touring rock star. That's you. No, that's actually you. No, no, no, that's, that is the, that's the thing. He, once a year, he packs up and he just goes from town to town, you know, he comes back and stuff, but it's a, it's a tour. It's basically, it's that you, and you have to have, Um, you have to keep track of your health. You have to be because you're always changing. So you got to be up on it. You got to get sleep. You got to do all that to stay up and be moving. You keep up with all those, all those, um, hockey guys. What were some of the restaurant highlights for the season? Well, you know, for, for me, I like the basics. Like I'm not a big, like highfalutin restaurant guy. There's a place called Moxie's in Dallas. And we were just down there for the playoff. So it's fresh of mind. It's a Canadian, uh, sports bar chain. And, you know, I got to tell you, I had one of the best salmon salads. Uh, you know, you get a Caesar salad with a big chunk of salmon on it, it's spectacular. And, and so places like that, there's also a place in Dallas called Dunston's, which is a supper club. It's an old school steakhouse that we go to big fun there. And, you know, I just think, you know, Montreal has some cool, like European style restaurants. There's one restaurant we go to, I can't pronounce the name. It's an Italian, but it's, it's actually an old Montreal. It's in the bottom of this big, tall building. And it used to be a jail cell. And now it's this really cool Italian restaurant. I, I wish I had the name top of head, but I don't. But there's so much European flavor and in Montreal people seem to love that. Um, and then you'll go to New York and you talk about great food in New York and you can't go. Well, there's a Sbarro. Yeah, that's a Sbarro. Those, uh, you can find a great hot dog. So Brett or whatever those things are. John and I are big fans of the street meat. Oh, it's the best. Steve, when you were, um, a touring, uh, rock star, what were some of your, uh, culinary highlights? Um, no, uh, that would have been fun. Only time we ate good was when the bar would feed us. Okay. And sometimes it was, you know, whatever they had, or sometimes it was like a brewery and they'd give us flights of beer and try different beers and stuff but we saw some great places and did some cool stuff, but it wasn't, the food was not, now, traveling with Target was a whole different thing. We saw some amazing places. Well, let's talk about that then. I travel around all of, uh, all of, uh, Hong Kong. Oh. And in search of, oh good. Hong Kong. Good, good venues for event spaces for Target. So we had a whole event we did in Shanghai and then a small team of us went to Hong Kong and we, it was actually exhausting and it was actually embarrassing how annoyed we were with all this good food cuz we had to try things out for the executives and, and try all the different areas. And I had to think about production, what, what could we actually do in here and blah, blah, blah. But we actually, we would go tour like. Five places, six places in a day. Oh, wow. It's exhausting. I can't even explain you. You're having to, we would actually trade off. Okay. Now you're the representative would talk to them because they're so kind and everyone wants to be so. Um, they think that you're a big shot because you're with Target. We're just a Target team that's going to look at stuff. Yeah. But they just roll out the red carpet. They're, they're making chocolate statues of you. And they've got like stickers on the windows that have Target and everything. And it's, it's quite. That's very cool. It's, but it was really, really, really cool. I've, I've. Have amazing memories from that time, but it was, um, kind of a whirlwind. I was wishing I would have had my family or something to see what I was seeing, because it was really very cool. KG, what's your go to food at Canterbury Park? I'll tell you what. The popcorn is second to none. Popcorn's great, but if you do it right, you don't go to, I mean, the standalone, like, places on each floor are fine. If you want a brawn, if you want a beer, you want a hot dog, that's fine. But you go into the card club and you can order any kind of, uh, any kind of food you want from steak and eggs to salmon salad, Chinese, they've got a menu that is second to none. You know, you take, you know, you give them your phone number, they beep you when it's on your phone, they'll give you a little text. It's made to order, it's spectacular, it's great food, and then a lot of times on the weekends we race like on Saturdays and Sundays, we have all the food trucks out there, and I'm one of those guys, I love a good food truck, so we've got great food trucks with Mexican, oh I love them, love food trucks. I do too. What, what, what's on the uh, the plan for tonight? You got dinner plans tonight KG? Well, I got to be honest, I was at the vet with the pups over in Edina and I had an early dinner because I knew I was doing the podcast at six and I lunch at about 11 a. m. So by 4. 30 or 5, I'm ready to roll. I did take out from smack shack. I got a lobster roll to go and I'm going to tell you right now, boys. Unbeatable. That thing was so damn good. Was this at the old Fuddruckers? Yes. Good call. Fuddruckers went out of business, and now it is a Smack Shack, and it is delicious. I think some guys that we went to high school with, owned Smack Shack. Really? Are you serious? That's big stuff now, right? Like Tommy Rogers. Oh, they're doing great. Tim Berger. I think those guys have something to do with smack check. Tommy and Tim, cuz I know you're listening if, if that's inaccurate you can, uh, you could tell me otherwise, but I, I isn't smack check like the original one down downtown Minneapolis. Yes, yes it is. Yeah. I think those guys have some ownership interests of. Like Washington. Yeah, Washington. Yeah. Yep. It's cool. It's a cool place. They're doing very well. Well, I think that this is what we should do more often. It's always nice to get, you know, one of these do gooders on here and they can talk about, you know. Yeah. But I, I'm really more interested in, in what you, not doing enough, what you got. Yeah, exactly. You know, you do, you kind of feel like, oh, well, aren't you precious? What are you doing tonight? Well, I'm going to smack shack. And then I'm going to lay on the couch and watch Fox News. So... Oh my god, you're funny. I think that this is terrific. This is going to be... This is our breath of fresh air episode. It is. Before we go, I want to, um, and I know, Steve, this is going to be right up your alley, the NFL Draft. Okay. Okay. We've had a segment historically called Don't Be That Guy. Yeah. Um, as I understand it, there's a young man, Who was a quarterback from the University of Kentucky who at one point was considered to be maybe the number one or two overall draft pick. And apparently he went and visited with a bunch of teams and his arrogance was so overwhelming that teams passed on him. Like wanted nothing to do with them. Are you guys, have you guys heard Aaron Rogers didn't get picked? Well, remember Rogers was supposed to go in the top five and he went late number 24 or something. Yeah. Yeah. Obviously. So that's a, that's a category, right? That's what people are looking at. If they're going to be like that, that early, then that's a sign that there's trouble, right? Is that kind of what that means? I think that they, they looked at this person and said, This guy is not a team guy. We're just going to take our chances with somebody else. Otherwise, you know, And odds are he's not Aaron Rodgers, right? That's probably the exception to the rule. And it's such a razor thin line between these top and draftable players. That if you've got a jackass on your hands, especially at that position, that's such a polarizing position. I'm, I'm sure teams are just like, we're going to take chances here. This guy isn't Aaron Rodgers and screw this guy. We're going to go somewhere else. And they, you know, the draft and I've gotten into it the last couple of years, the draft is so much more about the aptitude test and getting to know the players these days, because they're all such good athletes, like 70s and 80s. Some of the guys didn't even work out. It's different now. Like all these guys physically are ready to go. So it really comes down to what's between the ears and what kind of heart they've got. So I find that to be very interesting. Like the picture of Tom Brady back when he was drafted, he's wearing a pair of shorts and honest to God, I have a better physique than Tom Brady had. Really? Agree. Well, when I was 22. Not now. Well, you did lose the COVID weight. I did lose the COVID weight, so that helps, but The Vikings are very much about getting, uh, quality human beings as much as anything, which of course makes me happy. That's good. We might go two and 16 this year, but dammit, we got good dudes on the team. Minnesota night, baby. Yeah. Well, I, I think also it must play into the What kind of issues the coach wants to deal with, you know, like if, if a person's really difficult. It's kind of, it's a bad apple is going to pull the whole team in bad directions. And it's, you know, it's kind of up to the coach to, to think that through. Well, I'm, I'm assuming I also wanted to share with you guys and with our listeners. One, thank you for listening for whatever reason there, the, the downloads have been ramping up. We do this once a week. Um, it's, it's fun for us. You know, we don't, uh, we don't mess around with sponsors yet, but we probably will do that at some point. Um, I just want to preview what's coming up in the next upcoming weeks. Yeah, tell us, because I don't know. The Selfless Scholar program that we've talked about over the the last couple of months. We have selected our 16 recipients of the Selfless Scholarship. The stories are... Absolutely the most heartwarming things that you've ever seen. Um, we've got one presentation coming up in mid May at Chanhassen High School. We got one at, uh, Maple Grove High School. We've got a Masabi East High School up in, uh, Northern Minnesota. All over the state. Explain quickly what that is again. So the Selfless Scholar is a program that we started at Minnesota Masonic Charities essentially invites young people to nominate their peers instead of typical scholarship programs people will will apply for the scholarship and they will tell you about themselves. for academics. Academics, mostly academics and they, you know, tell you about how, what a wonderful person that they are and that's great. Yeah. I was never a person that was probably going to compete for any of those kind of scholarships. I mean, unless it was like a scholarship for holding the clipboard on the sideline of the game. Or rolling the basketball cart out. I probably could have been like a varsity basketball cart roller guy. Um, but I've always been enamored with people who make others feel like they matter. So we invited people, uh, students from out of the state of Minnesota. Uh, my son Ben and his friends called every high school in the state and we got nominations from throughout the state. Cool. And the stories, the diversity of the stories and just the heartwarming things that are going on out there and uh, recap of that. Yeah, and my, my, my goal is to interview both some of these people that are involved in the writing of the nominations and then those that are being nominated. Yeah. Because those... People that are being nominated, what's fun is, is they have no idea that they're getting these scholarships, so it's kind of a surprise. Um. But yeah, I'm looking forward to, uh, to sharing some of those stories with you. Yeah, let's do it. And, KG could maybe you could give us a few picks for the race, I would love that. Do you have a favorite for for, uh, the Kentucky Derby? He's got the two. Well, I mean, two Phil's, I think, is... Two Phil's and the King. Is gonna end up being my top pick, and not because he's a Canterbury, it's because I think he's good enough to win. And he's got a good number. You know, he's, he's right there where you want to save ground kind of on the inside and, and in a crowded field. And like I said, if Loveberry can sneak his way through, I, you know, the horse to beat without a doubt is a horse named Forte, F O R T E. He drew a great post in post 15. He's on a five race win streak. He won the Florida Derby, which is always a great precursor to Kentucky. But my point on Forte, when I handicapped this race is he's going to be like three to one on. Why would you take three to one on to the 20 horse field? When, when Canterbury opens, I can find a much better options at three to one and like six, seven, eight horse fields. I mean, he can win, but he's a big closer that comes from way back. And he's really going to have to be at the mercy of the traffic, the sneaky long shot. In this race, it's going to be a huge price as a horse named Skinner. Skinner is 30 to one. Oh. Comes in from California. Skinner. And he's had some, some really tough trips. He's had some wide, uh, trips where that cost him the win. So he hasn't won anything this year, but he's been knocking at the door. Skinner, if you're going to put together like a trifecta or an exacta. Um, we have mixed those horses in and box them up. He's my sneaky long shot. He's number nine. I was just looking for a name of a horse or two, but thanks. That was a full analysis. That was fantastic. No, no, that was good. Skinner, two fills and a Forte, I don't like that name. Forte seems a little precious Chicago bears running back. I'm watching two fills. Yeah, that's our guy. So we do a little trifecta box with Forte Skinner and two fills and just see what happens. There you go. Um, you, we usually sign off by saying, and off we go. Yeah. Which I think is clever. It's, I think we need, you gotta say that. Okay. And off we go. But before, off we go, Steve, um, thinks that we need to provide the world with some, uh, words of wisdom, some words of kindness, something to inspire. We don't have a lot of format for this show. What are you talking about, It is what comes as. We, we, we don't rehearse the show. Obviously we just kind of go with it and we go with our gut. We go with our hearts. This is what it's about, but I thought it'd be nice to have a format. It's like Seinfeld. Exactly. It's a show about nothing that has some hearts. Exactly. So, well, I thought it'd be great to have. Uh, a little tagline, aside from just, we're off. The same tagline, or are we gonna mix it up? I don't know, I got a whole list up here. Well, give us one or two. I'll try one out, I'll try one out. Let's just try one out. Alright, let's see. Oh boy, pick a good one. I have a, I have a list of them. In a world where you could be anything, be kind. Be kind. You like that one? Yeah, that's a good one. Yeah, or... I actually like that. Be kind. It costs nothing. Oh my. Oh, I like that. That's like a Walmart card. I'm sure you know, Steve is a voiceover guy. A struggling voiceover guy. A struggling, but listen to that. It sounded like, be kind. Silky. Yeah. It's very silky. Yeah. Now can we say and off we go? Yes. And off we go. Bye guys.
