No Guest today. We catch up on" important" matters.

.Welcome to the Kindness Chronicles, where we hope to inject the world with the dose of the Minnesota nice that it desperately needs. Yeah! We're gonna do a, uh, News, Weather, and Sports, starting with, uh, with the weather on the, uh, on the top of the hour. Yeah. Um, so much for our nice spring. What a crazy predicament this has been, and it, it's, uh, it took me an hour and a half to get from Edina to my office. Why were you in Edina? I had a, an appointment early morning, but, but as I left my house, it was raining. I'm like, Oh, this is gonna be great. The blizzard kicked in on that drive. It was ridiculous. Yeah. The weather has been ridiculous. I think I've done my driveway probably six times because I'm concerned about that stuff freezing. And turning in the ruts. Oh, God. And you were just relaxing in the sun not long ago. I was, I was. That's Minnesota. I just got back from Mexico. Yes. What part of Mexico did you go? I was in Cabo. Oh, I love Cabo. We go to Cabo every year. I love it. And, uh, yeah, we were down there. There was a group of ten of us. And I Got a 14 passenger van. Ooh. And it was a 14 passenger van with a stick shift. What? That sounds awful. Stick shift van. That's Well, and here's the deal. Haven't driven a stick shift in about 25, maybe 30 years. Ooh. And I got in there and instead of taking the fast route. I decided we were gonna, cause it, none of these people had been to Cabo other than my kids. Yeah. And it was a bunch of their friends and couples and stuff. So we took the, uh, the cultural route, which is through the, the main part of, of Cabo. Yeah. I wanted them to see it. So you drove. I drove the whole time. You were the captain and responsible for 14 souls in a stick shift van. 14 souls in a stick shift van. In a foreign country. And it was baptism by fire. Yeah. Driving through the inner city of Cabo San Lucas. It was quite an adventure. Yeah. Because it was, stop and go. And here's what's so crazy. I found a parking lot. Kind of in the center of town our place that we stay at is about a mile North of the center of the city. Okay, maybe two miles same place all the time same place all the time. Cool it's very nice and I Found this parking spot right next to our favorite taco place. Believe it or not. They have tacos in Mexico called El Paisa and No matter how far we had to walk I was parking in that place because it was a nice easy parking spot. Yeah. And plus tacos close by. Oh, and the tacos came very much in handy. So one of the days we rented a boat and we're out on the water for the whole day. Fun. Well, fun for them, maybe not a lot of fun for the sober person that was in the, uh, in the group. But let me tell you, having that taco place right there when we got off the boat, We did some damage at El Paisa. Was, was it choppy water? How was it? No, the water was, it was lovely. The whole thing was lovely. Okay. Yeah, it was very nice. What have you guys, did you guys, uh, do anything for spring break? Yeah, just sat around and waited for the snow and got ready for some rock and roll. For your concert. Yeah. So let's talk about the concert. Yeah. Yeah, let's hear about this. I had my first Johnny Clueless experience, in fact I drove straight from the airport To the dugout for the Johnny Clueless. And this is what this jackass does to me. He looks out in the crowd and I'm wearing shorts, a pink, a peach colored shirt. Now it was, it was red. It was red. It looked pink in the bar. It probably felt pink to you, but it was a very stylish, uh, hoodie sort of thing. Light hoodie from Tommy Bahama. Yes. And I had on a visor. Yes, a white visor. A white visor. Yeah. And because I, my head is so big, I can't fit into conventional hats. So Steve looks out and he's like, Hey, and I mean, this place is packed. And Steve goes, Hey, I know you. I said, welcome home. Welcome home. Nice visor. So everybody in the place looks over at me, and as we left, I bet you I got a dozen nice visors from people. Well, you looked like you were starting a tennis tournament over there in the corner. It's a golf visor. It's a golf visor. Thank you very much. No, I was so glad to see you guys. Oh, it was so much fun. I saw you smiling from the side, but I didn't recognize you, and I had to Because of the visor? Yeah, the visor threw me off. I saw your wife like, Oh man, they actually, I did not expect you to come. That was super cool. It was very fun. And we, I said to my wife before we left, I said, we on Saturday, when we get back, we got to go to the Johnny Clueless concert and she goes, great, I will bet you anything you're not going to the Johnny Clueless concert. So that was kind of my main motivation to show her that it approved her wrong. Yeah. KG. I was out until about 1145. After getting off a plane. After getting off an airplane and after a full vacation where you were basically babysitting, I give you high marks, Johnny. High marks indeed. I'm super appreciative. And I feel like, John, I feel like you know me better now. I do! Because you've seen my other life. It's, it's KG. The next time he plays, you gotta go. You will shit yourself. I know. I'm not bleeping that out either. He's a rock star! Well, the picture I saw, people were like clamoring at the stage, like reaching for him like he's one of the Beatles. He's got those red pants on. That's mostly my family. My kids. They're like, gosh. They didn't look like your family to me. They looked like it was a whole something. No, no, there weren't many 20 somethings. There was a whole bunch of 50 somethings. There was a contingency of 21 year olds, my daughter and all her friends came out and their, and their moms. So it was like this big gang of kids that I've seen since high school are now. So that's the goal is to stay this, keep this band going long enough so my kids can get to the bar and now it's what it's Lucy's 21. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It was very cool. And your mom was there and my mom was there. And she's 80, 82. Wow. Yeah. She's very spry. How long did you guys play for? We played for from like nine to midnight with a nice big break, but we had an opening act to be exhausted. Yeah, it was KG. I don't stay up past 11 o'clock at night. That was, that was hard. That was a hard night. He's up there sweating. It was quite an adventure. And what was super fun. You know, I, I don't know all of these songs. I've listened to some of them, but not enough that I know the words to these songs, original music, most everybody in that place was singing along. Yeah. That's gotta be kind of an ego trip. Isn't it? Um, it used to be, maybe you just, it's super cool. It's it's the people in that bar. Um, it's a destination when we play, it's not just like Monomia night people, people come across town and come from Iowa, come from places. Um, and like, you know, um, but they've known these songs forever and they're people from St. Cloud State. I called out that there's a lot of, there was a lot of St. Cloud State going on there. And uh, and that's, that's part of the thing, uh, but, but it's more than that too. It's, it's, uh, It's it's people but I went to high school people went to college with and then just fan base of people have been watching this Band for 30 clueless nation. Yeah, no, they're not and after at a certain point I decided you were trying to like we were trying to make it, you know, quote unquote We're trying all that kind of stuff and a certain point years ago I leaned into the idea that you know, these people love us We love they do we love playing and we This is all that these people only people that really matter like we're not trying to we're not promoting We're just we do our own little thing We have kind of a we're open to anyone who wants to come and check it out people usually catch on to it pretty quickly You don't have to know the songs It's it's great if you do, but they're pretty catchy rock and roll songs. So you're not like it's not like I'll I perform in a way the show I want to see is the show that I'm trying to put on. You know, that's what I'm trying to do. And one of the things Becky said to me, she said, You hate this stuff, and you couldn't stop smiling. And I said, I kind of felt like You hate this stuff? No, like going to the bar. Oh, yeah. Oh, he does not like crowds. He's like me. No, no, no. John, let me tell you. If we got off a plane, the last thing my wife would ever do is, she would be like, we are not, I am not going. So, I know, you're probably like that too. But the point is, I had so much fun. And I think the biggest thing is just, it was like this alter ego thing that you were doing up there. It was like, you know, you took your glasses off and all of a sudden you're not Clark Kent anymore, you're Jarrell. I just get into the music, you know, it's Yeah, I'm just I'm still me. I'm just like a heightened version of me Heightened That was a short joke. Not very nice. You know, there were some people that you knew there. Did you see Tommy Lyons there? I didn't see Tommy. He was there. My brother Dan was there. Where were they? I don't know It's a small bar, but it's dark and oh, it's dark. It's not that small I mean that place was packed with a lot of people there was a Jersey Jersey Shore looking group that was there. That was very fun to, I was like, these people for sure went to St. Cloud State. I don't know who that was, but yeah, I, I, I would have, I'd love to have you out there sometime, Kevin, just to kind of catch it and understand what this is. I can't wait. I gotta see this. Yeah, it was absolutely, it was fun, the music was great, the, I mean, the band is pretty good. I mean the band, you guys are musically, but I do have to ask, Kevin, have you ever been in a situation Where, like, some rando comes up to you and wants to talk to you. What, I don't know, I might call him like a clomper or something like that. Are you familiar with that term? Yeah, we've all been there, haven't we? Not me, but I'm not a rock star. Oh yes, you have. No, but there, so, one of the things that I noticed is that there were a couple of guys that were right at the front of the stage. And man, did they love Steve Brown. Aww. And, and, I just, Kevin. Aww. One of the things that you and I always like to talk about when we go out and, you know, people like to talk to you and, you never know anybody's names and it's, it's always, it's, yeah, is it going to be champ, chief, sport or boss? Um. If we were to go out tonight, for example, what would it be, Kevin? It feels like a partner or a boss night because we're out there braving the elements together. Oh, that's good, yeah. See, he brings in the moment of the evening, too. Well, he does. You know, it's sort of like George Costanza, how he dresses. He dresses based on mood. Right? I have a lot in common with George, yeah. What do you call this ensemble? This is Morning Mist. Remember? Yeah. There it is. Ding. So good. Science Files Episode. Season 4, Episode 1. Yeah. Thank you very much. Wow. That was the trip. Part 1. I watch too much TV. Um, KG, what's going on in your life? This is just sort of a let's get caught up and see how things are going. You know, I think. I'll put myself at the top of the list. I think I jinxed it. Um, whether I was getting a haircut, yes, even though I have very little hair, I still go to great clips and get the head shaved. Um, or out talking to the mailman in the last month, all I kept saying is, well, we made it, can you believe that winter was, so I kept on tempting fate and. This week, I think I'm paying for every one of those comments. So we, um, we snuck away for four days. We had a little break in the wild schedule because last week when the wild went to California, both the Tuesday and Wednesday games were on national TV. So we weren't broadcasting those games. So. We snuck down to Arizona, left on a Sunday and stayed through Wednesday night. So it was a really quick, like four day trip. Uh, went to Scott that we've been to the same spot the last couple of years. And it just so happened that two of my daughters, uh, were in Arizona on vacation at the same time. So they got to come over and, and see us. And, uh, the weather was. Beautiful like high 60s low 70s. And I think the metaphor for my relationship with Chrissy came to a crescendo when we first landed in Arizona. So I was coming from St. Louis where the wild had played on Saturday. She was coming from, uh, MSB. And so we met at the airport. Um, she got the rental car, picked me up at, uh, That's the spot where I landed and off we go. It's mid morning, probably nine 30, 10 o'clock. And we both been traveling and both up early, like four o'clock in the morning, wake up and you know, the drill, get to the airport. I'm actually tired and I'm starving. And so she decides, why don't we do a hike? And I'm like, no, there's no hike today. So she goes, well, I really want to, I really want to hike. And I'm like, well, you're more than welcome to. And so she decides to take on the big one out there. I can't, I'm superstition mountain. No, my, actually my daughter's did that the day before. Yeah. My daughter was just there and did that. It'll come to me as I tell the story. Bottom line is it's a two and a half hour hike. It's the, it's like, In skiing terms, it's the black, the black diamond, right? It's the one where all the experienced, um, hikers go. So literally we get out of the airport and she's like, I really want to do this. So I'm like, okay. So I take her to the spot. I drop her off and I'm going to go get groceries for the week. So we have stuff in the, in the little cabana and I'm going to get in and out burger. That, that pretty much says it all, doesn't it? Making herself better. And I'm going to In N Out Burger into the grocery store, and somewhere along the lines, I looked in the mirror, and I said, Well, this makes sense to me. Yeah, and, yeah, unfortunately, she'll be still climbing mountains when she's 80, and you and I will be in wheelchairs. Hopefully, hopefully, Taking the shuttle to In N Out Burger. Yeah, if things work out, yeah, exactly. Could you puree that for me? Oh my gosh. Well, that pretty much says it all right there. Yeah, those, what is with Those women in our life, the ambition that they have. They're crazy. I, I don't understand how you get that kind of motivation, but she did it and she really, I mean, honestly, she was feeling it. I mean, it was, uh, it was a tough one and she got through it. And you know what we say to that KG? Oh good for you. Camelback. Camelback. Camelback mom. No, that's the one that, that Riley, that was the one Riley climbed camelback. Camelback. Yeah, it's a B. Thank God I didn't go. You gotta be careful taking a two hour, uh, hike like that. As far as, uh, Elevation and stuff. Like, you come from Minnesota and like, We went to Colorado and like, we just walked up this big steep thing and we're like, couldn't breathe. My heart was racing. No, yeah. It's just elevation stuff. Tough. I don't know that she, I don't know how high the elevation is there. I guess it's probably not as bad, but yeah, when we were in, when we were in, uh, Colorado, a couple of months ago or so, you can feel it kicked my backside. It was just like, what the hell's wrong with me? Like, Oh, that's right. We're. So this is the kindness chronicles and people probably don't want to hear about our personal lives that much stuff. Um, I have a, uh, a story related to the State High School Hockey Tournament that I just want to bring up. Okay. That really, I thought, was awfully cool. And this weather actually matches the High School Hockey Tournament. This weather, yeah, the Blizzard was, the High School Hockey Tournament Blizzard was just a couple weeks late. Yeah. Um, KG, you and I, uh, had the, uh, the opportunity to watch the final game together. Yes, we did. And, Edina versus Chanhassen. And we had a rooting interest on both sides, on both teams. One of them was, Tyler Smith, who was, uh, one of our Selfless Scholar, recipients. Was a player on the Chanhassen team. But we also got introduced kind of virtually to the goalie for the Edina hockey team. Name Joe Bertram. Is that the name? Joe Bertram? That's exactly right. We gotta get Joe on the podcast because that guy, for starters, what an impressive kid. What an impressive goalie. But more importantly, you know, the whole game he had the biggest smile on his face. Like you could tell there was no, the guy had ice water in his veins. Like there was nothing stressing him out at all. I don't think I saw that. He was having so much fun. And you know, when you think about that kind of pressure too, when you're the goalie, Eddie Dinah in a state championship game in front of 20, 000 people on TV everywhere, I mean, it's on TV locally, but of course you can watch it online, all over the country. And that's, that's supposed to be. A type of, you know, situation where a lot of high school kids feel that pressure and are just trying to survive it. He was just thriving and giggling and laughing and making these saves and the camera would have that look and he'd have this just look of, this is so much fun, like I'm out in the driveway and that, that is rare. At that level for a young kid to have that much voice. Yeah. Somehow you must have just the perspective of this is an important moment in his life and enjoy it. Like, and he was a guy who never, he wasn't on, he wasn't the starting varsity goalie until his senior year, until this year. Wow. But the part about Joe Bertram that I absolutely was just inspired by. He gets an opportunity to be interviewed by the guys in the booth after the game. And the first thing he does is he acknowledges the fact that Lou Nanny was retiring after 60 years and congratulates Lou and acknowledges it. And what, wasn't that just amazing? He's a pro already. Yeah, I, I got to tell you, you know, we know a little bit of the backstory because one of our, our good friends, Linda Paulson, Who lives in a diner. There's a mutual friendship there with this family. And so we kind of got the backstory on this young man and, uh, what a great kid he is off the ice and how he's waited his turn and done it the right way. And so to see this play out the way it did, um, in a, in a championship environment like that, the two best teams, uh, in the state, you know, kind of in this big, high powered collision and seeing this kid, um, handle, not just the game, but the post game. Uh, you know, again, these are kids, these are high school kids, and with a lot more poise than a lot of adults would have at almost any age. And, you know, in a world where it's all about me or what's next for me, it was just the opposite for this kid. So I think it will be Awesome to have him on and give him a little love and just acknowledge the way he handled that situation because this kid's going places and I don't know if the NHL is where he's going. He's a great goalie, who knows, but wherever he's going to go, he's going to have a lot of success. So will he do like juniors or something like that next year? If you want to be a D one goalie and that's your ultimate goal. Absolutely. He would take the route of having the juniors, some kids. And again, you just never know, but some kids are like, you know what, wherever I land, I'm going to play. And, and that might be a division three school. That might be a smaller division one program. I know, um, you know, there are a couple of new programs that we're familiar with St. Thomas, Augustana has a team. Uh, it'll be interesting to see which route he takes. I don't know. Uh, maybe that'll come out during our show and we have them on and I think we should get them on soon. But, uh, yeah, it just, it was a phenomenal game and it was a real rarity and I'm, I'm a left handed goalie and I was, you know, when I played, one of maybe two or three in the entire state and I had never seen this before, but in a championship game, At the state tournament, there were two left handed goalies, one for Chanhassen, one for Adina, going head to head. Remarkable, like seeing a unicorn, it was crazy. So wait a minute, you were a left handed, you were a goalie? Wait, for, for what team? Did you high school? Stop it. Can you imagine what it would have been like to be a state champion? Can you just imagine what that would be like? I wish we had some stories. I know it's too bad. It was so long ago. I forgot. It's almost 40 years ago. I wish I had that memory. I do have a, just a very interesting, um, my mother is part of this founders group at Hillmurray because of course you have to bring it up and what she has schemed, what she wants to do is she wants to have a Uh, this fall, like a 40th anniversary of the Hill Murray Burnsville hockey battle that KG's, uh, Burnsville Braves won, and have a bunch of Hill Murray guys and a few Burnsville guys be a part of the podcast and see if we can all get along. After 40 years, those wounds have healed. A bitter rivalry that gets overtaken. I thought that was going to be a surprise for KG. Now you're telling us right now. Oh no, I Hello? And he hung up. He didn't care for that plan. He didn't want to deal with that. Yeah, he doesn't like that. Okay, we're going to have to call him back. Yeah. You know, he's probably going through a drive thru. Let's try him again. We don't have In N Out Burger here, but I'm sure he found an equivalent. So, Ryber, we were so intense, I had to hang up on you. Yeah, you didn't, you didn't care about that. Tension. You know, it's Tom Quinlan's birthday tomorrow. You remember TQ, don't you? He was such a good player. Great guy, too. Couldn't be nicer. What do you got? You got something over there. I just, you know, this is a kind of a Random chatter episode and I know you mentioned that kid which is cool that hockey. Yeah, Joe Bertram Um, I just want to mention, you know, I'm always sending you things I find things that I find on linkedin. It's great I'm searching linkedin for for my business for my job, but i'm also finding things kindness kind of stuff. There's a guy that I I everything I see that he posts I send a lot of stuff to you I love him and I think our listeners should check him out. His name is neil ford. Oh, yeah. He's a storyteller You N E A L F O A R D. Yeah, N E A L F O A R D. Um, the most interesting stories, he's a great storyteller about, uh, kindness and, uh, humility and just these great stories that relate to anybody. Yep. And the way he tells them are so interesting. Um, and this is one of the, uh, uh, one of his phrases, small kindnesses aren't loud, but they echo forever. Oh. It's a cool, it's a cool little thing. That's fantastic. Yeah, he, that's, that's. That's very quintessential to who he, what he talks about and it's, it fits in very well with what our show is about and I, I just love everything he says. I'd love to talk to him sometime. I have a quick story that I'd love to share. Um, it's a Shaquille O'Neal story. So there's a, a young man, uh, I'm not sure where he lives, but he is a kid that has size 23 feet, 16 years old, and his feet Hold on, hold on, hold on. Size 23. 23? 23. Those are like That's insane. Those are like, you know It is insane. Those are bigger feet than Shaq has. So anyway, somehow Shaq heard about this kid. And like went and had 20 pairs of custom shoes made. Yeah. The, the woman that was doing the news story, she stuck her arm into the shoe and, and, and the, the shoe was longer than from her fingertips to her elbow. That's a flipper. That's a shoe. Holy cow. Yeah. This kid was, uh, he's like 6 6, 380 pounds. Does he play. He's, uh, he, yeah, he might be a little too heavy to be super athletic, but it sounds like a giant. Yeah. But I mean, when you don't have shoes that you can run in, how can you train? How can you train? Yeah. So it's Shaq helped him out. Is that what you're going to say? That's the, you have Shaq sent him like 20 pair of shoes and essentially emptied out his closet of all of these clothes and sent him boxes of clothing that he had. And most of the stuff still had tags on them. It was very cool. I love that Shaq. I just love him. He's just, he is the, to me, just the embodiment of a professional athlete, kindness. I actually really appreciate his sense of humor. Oh God, he's funny. He's very self deprecating in the best way, even though he, he doesn't act it, but he's, he's in on all the kind of jokes. I think he's very entertaining. He's a great, yeah. Between him and Barkley, those two guys. Yeah. Okay, one last thing. Yeah. Before, you know, so we did, we did the, that was, we'll call that news, weather, sports. Sports. Um, Seinfeld. We're going to talk a little bit about, yeah, Hill Murray, Montomedi. Burnsville. St. Thomas, we mentioned it all. the, uh, March Madness. Yes. The Caitlin Clark phenomenon is. Out of this world, please tell me you know who Caitlin Clark is. I think I saw a photo of a, of a young lady playing basketball. You have to know who Caitlin Clark is, Steve. Now, come on. Unless you've been living under a rock. Come on. Hey, I've been practicing for, for our show. I've been really focused. For like, two years? I mean, it was good. It wasn't two years good. Caitlin Clark is a basketball player from the University of Iowa. Yes. I, I, yeah. I just had read about her. I've seen the photos. I'm like, Oh, this, this young lady plays basketball. I mean, that's what I, that's cool. Anyway, go on, go on. Tell our listeners. The enthusiasm that young people, boys and girls, have for this, this athlete, Is just incredible and she just handles it with such class and grace and stops and signs autographs and the picture taking, I mean it's just, I just think it's awesome. KG, you must have some thoughts on Caitlin Clark. What's her thing? Yeah. Three pointers, long ones. That's what I thought I saw. I get my sports from you guys. My outside, uh, KG, are you still there? I'm here, I'm just in awe of Steve not knowing who Caitlin Clark is. I mean, she's done State Farm commercials, for crying out loud. She is as big time as any athlete on the planet right now. Yeah, she's like a top five, uh, NIL. I'm sorry, gentlemen. I'm sorry. Okay, that's, I, you know what? I accept your apology. I'll on behalf. I get it from you guys. That's where I get the information. So this is good. You tell me that's what I assume is she's a three pointer. I think I saw a video when she's broken all the records for all time scoring. I mean, she's she's something great. Thank you. You got anything on her or I'll send her the way she plays the game. I mean, she looks like, uh, the female version of Michael Jordan. She just watched the ball crunch time. Wants to make the big play it has all the pressure and always seems to find a way to make it happen I love watching her. I watched the game last night It got dicey tied with like four minutes to go and then she basically just took it over I mean, she's unbelievable love her. Yeah, she's pretty cool. I'll have to watch out to check her out. All right. Well, This is, uh, the end of our Newsweather in Sports. You know, it's a 30 minute, uh, newscast. We didn't do any commercials, but, uh, I want to thank you for coming out after your long trip. Well, It was great to see you there. I'm glad you got to enjoy it. And I, I had such a fun night, and my, our fans know it. We had a, we all had a fun night together, so. And, and, why don't you play more often? Alright. I know. Yeah. Everybody's asking that. And it's just like, you, these are adults that have got jobs. And families. Well, there was a time when, uh, You know, we played every everywhere and it was too much Johnny. It was too much. Johnny cool. Now it's, you know, it's more fun. Yeah. Supply and demand simple economics based on the number of people that were crammed into that bar. There was definitely, we do not want to be playing three nights a week. That's not who we are anymore. No way. You know, twice a. Year. First year. Yeah. Let's do it. All right. And on that note, uh, you know, Hey, we should do a, uh, an Easter show. Cause it's Easter week. Great idea. Let's do that on Friday. All right. And off we go. KG. Off we go. Off we go.
