The Kindness Chronicles
Betty White, Milty and Friends
We talkin' dogs for the 4th of July, Betty, Milty, Fenway, Brooks and Belle.
Welcome to a special 4th of July edition of the Kindness Chronicles where we hope to inject the world with a dose of the Minnesota Arf! Arf! Nice! Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf! Oh wow, that's pretty, wow! That's pretty impressive. So, this is a special edition, we're going to be talking about dogs today. Dogs. And I want to bring up dogs for a couple of reasons. One is I have never, in my entire life, had a dog. Really? Yeah. And I think it's kind of Oh, you poor guy. You poor kid. I think that it's really impacted the kind of person that I could have been. You could have been a better person. I could have been a better person. I feel like I've been held back. I believe so, too. But I had, have the pleasure of having, uh, Steve Brown. Hello, Steve. Hi there. And my pal, Kevin Gorg. Hello, Kevin. Hi there. Hello, guys. And both these guys are dog owners. And there's Ben. Hi, Ben. Thanks for stopping by. Um, we're talking dogs and, uh, KG, tell us about your two little pooches here on the Fourth of July. Well, I was deprived like you all my life. My, my dad, Kenny, super allergic to dogs. We never had a chance to have a dog or cat, which is fine. And so, Now, 10 years ago, Chrissy came up with the idea and I was apprehensive because you know, we both have jobs that take us away from the house more often than not. And I was like, I, I gave some pushback that I've never owned a dog. I don't know what to do with a dog. And she goes, let's get two. And I'm like, Holy cow. So we get two puppies, Fenway and Brooke 10 years ago. And I went into this thinking this is going to be a complete and utter disaster. And I was wrong. And they, they have become the biggest part of my day every day. I am closer with these two dogs than almost any other human being on the planet. And when I think of dogs, I just think of unconditional love and man, I'm so happy we did it. What kind of dogs are, did you already say that? Some kind of doodles, right? They're Morkie dogs. So they're part Maltese and part Yorkie. That's right. They're an Orkie. Morkies. Yeah, 12 or 13 Morkies. They're 12 or 13 pounds. They're brothers from the same letter, they're adorable, they're good guys, they are super social, they love people, they love giving kisses, and they love other dogs. So yeah, I'm very happy with the decision, but I will be. The first to admit that I thought it was going to completely fail. And I understand one of the, uh, the motivations for doing this episode is, is we learn that Chrissy, uh, took Fenway and Brooks to a birthday party. And did you say it was a dog birthday party? Yeah, so Christy has a really sweet friend named Wendy who lives down in Shakopee. Her daughter doesn't live far from where we live in Minnetonka. And her daughter has a couple of dogs that are turning one. And so the invitation came, like when your kids get those invitations where, come celebrate the birthday, yada, yada, yada, so Fenway and Brooks are going to their first birthday party tonight. They've got the hats and the whole thing, and there'll be treats there. But they're like senior citizens, right? They don't act like it. I know you would think they'd be slowing down, but they still act like puppies. They've got so much energy and I think smaller dogs age a little slower sometimes because these guys are still pretty rambunctious. So I don't know how it's going to go. I think it could be a complete chaotic situation because they get really excited around other dogs, but I'm glad she's taken them and I was invited. Listen, uh, I had the podcast, you know, you got to give up on some, sometimes, sometimes. And, and so let's just imagine what that party is like. Can you imagine the butts that are getting sniffed at that party? And there's a lot of sniffing and licking going on. And then the dogs will be doing a lot of butt sniffing too. No, that's terrible. Why would I say that? Is this an example of something that I should cut out and then put into like a blooper reel? No, I think you leave it in there so people understand we have a sense humor. But John, you have a story. That ties into the fourth of July and your traditional trip down to Michigan and there's a dog involved in this story We have to get to it. Yeah, and and I love this dog. I love you love dogs. I love dog Yeah, you just never had a chance. I love Miltie and I think Miltie loves me back It could be so what kind of dog is Miltie? So, um, I think it's like a Cavapoo or something like that or I think that's what it is. Forgive me Uh, Steve and Michelle. I have been instructed. That it is a Katon. The two layer. Oh my. So, uh, Steve and Michelle Adelman every year for many years, we have gone to, uh, visit the Adelman's in Michigan. And, uh, Steve is also a former guest on our show. He was, he was a guest. He's the guy that did that show. Uh, did the, the program about, um, the club scene back. Yeah. He wrote an awesome book about the club scene in the nineties. Absolutely. Yeah. It was called nocturnal admissions. Yeah. Clever, clever. Smart guy. So anyways, Steve and Michelle have this dog, Miltie, and Miltie is just full of joy. He's just, every time you see him, you just fall in love with him again. And every year in Union Pier, which is, uh, the, the, like the second exit, uh, into Michigan, as you're coming around through Indiana, and it's right on the, uh, on Lake Michigan, Union Pier has a parade. Every year, we get Miltie dressed up, and he is the Grand Marshal of the parade. Really? Well, we don't know if he's officially the Grand Marshal. You consider him to be. And he thinks he is. Well, for sure he does. And I can tell you Steve Adelman definitely thinks that he is. We decorate this, uh, we have a wagon for him. The wagon is decorated with all kinds of red, white, and blue stuff. And this year, we're going to be celebrating Steve and Michelle's five year anniversary. Oh. So the five year anniversary, we're going to, uh, we're going to renew their vows. I officiated their wedding. Um, you know, because I do that as, as a reverend. Yeah. You're ordained. Power granted in me by the church of something or other and the internet, I now pronounce you husband and wife. But um, the theme for this year's, parade float, if you will, with Miltie as the Grand Marshal, it's going to be a, a five year anniversary, Just married dot, dot, dot, five years ago, uh, theme for the, uh, so I'm very excited about seeing melty and, uh, spending the time with, with the dog for a week. It's the only week of the year that I actually have, it's all I get, but I take, I get, I, Love fills you up. Yes, and how about you? So you have a dog? Yeah, my my my dog history goes pretty deep I'll give you the quick rundown, but I've had dogs growing up. Is this a long story? Our family had dogs I got some funny stories I probably can't tell you on here. I'll tell you after well You'll know when I tell you later on but we've had different dogs Jennifer my wife and I had a had a dog that we got from my her brother my brother in law You Um, the dog clearly loved us and didn't love Jed, her brother. So, um, the dog chose us. Okay. And it was the sweetest dog. Her name was Lexi. It was this great mutt. It was like a lab, shepherd kind of look. Um, and she, we had to put her down in, uh, like 20, uh, yeah, 2017, something like that. She was sick, but we loved her. The kids kind of got to know her a little bit, but the kids were still kind of little. Yep. Um. We're, we're done with dogs. We had actually, I should, we had two big dogs, Lexi and my brother in law's other dog. We had to, uh, take him on as well. Sounds like your brother in law. He got dogs and he let him, he gave them to us because we had a yard. He didn't, we had to help him out. But big dogs. One was a Rottweiler lab, a very big, a hundred and a hundred, 90 pound, big dog. No, sorry. Not 90 pounds. Okay. I was going to say that sounds like KGs, horses losing a thousand pounds. Yeah. He was. There we go. He was a big dog. Anyway, um, those dogs, you know, we moved and one dog Kuer, Ron Kuer was the one dog's name. Oh, come on. That's what he named Ron Kuer. Oh, I love Kuku Dog. Kuer. Yeah. That my brother-in-Law was a big twins fan. So Ron Kuer was his name. We call him Kuer He's a great dog, but, uh, he. He got stolen. Who steals a dog? Especially this dog. It was a huge dog, but he's very friendly. And it was an area off of McKnight. We lived off of McKnight. It was a busy area. And they stole it from your house. Someone took him. Someone saw someone, he got in the car and that was the last time we saw him. And then we moved to Cottage Grove. Anyway, so we were done with dogs, but we always had big dogs. We loved them, but that was kind of a, it, we had kids and the, and uh, we were done with dogs. Last August, my, this is a story getting long. My mother in law. Um, lives in Sartell. She said she wanted a dog. So my wife searched out, uh, all these different places to find a dog, a rescue dog. We found this dog and we thought this is the perfect dog. So we brought it to her and she's, you know, she said, or actually we got it and she said, I, I don't, I don't want a dog. I can't have a dog. So this became our dog, right? And this dog was left alone Someone had it and she had a chip in her and everything. Her name is her name is Bella and they left her She was on Highway 100. Oh, no, people found her wandering around and It brought she was a six year old six years old brought to a shelter brought to a shelter And I think they couldn't afford the dog. I think they were homeless. Apparently. Oh, geez She needed a bunch of teeth pulled she'd be spayed all kinds of stuff. So we took care of all that And, uh, she became our dog, but I'm telling you, it's the happiest, uh, we've never had a small dog. So this dog is like on your lap, is very affectionate, very funny, very fun. It's a great dog. I'd never want, we never thought we'd ever have a dog again. It's bringing us a lot of joy. Well, and, and you're empty nesters now, aren't you? We are, yeah, so that's part of it. That's very cool. It's a, it's a, it's a, it's considered a silky cocker. Come again? It's a, it's like a malty. Silky cocker? Yeah, that's what it's called. It's, it's like a, it looks like that. Sounds like a manscaping situation. It's a malty, kind of looking white cocker. Pretty dog, but what the fur is not right. It's very it's like a Yorkie. It's like hair. Yeah, it's silky We're gonna call this episode Betty white and here's why you know, we had Taylor Swift last week. Yeah It's gonna be Betty white and Betty white because I while I don't have a dog My sister has an English cream retriever And that dog's name is Betty White. Really? Because it's this white, beautiful dog. That's great. And my sister Kate has always been a dog lover. We had, neighbors, growing up in St. Paul that had, Golden Retrievers that were just these beautiful dogs and I can't remember what that dog's name was, but my sister got a dog as soon as she could get a dog and it was this beautiful dog and the dog's name was Griffin. We called him Gripper. And I could get Gripper to howl like you wouldn't believe. And Gripper would get super excited whenever anybody came around and I'd, you know, tell him to speak and he would speak and he would speak like that. It was so fun. Betty White. Very serious dog. Yeah. They're all very different, right? Their personalities are this dog. So my cousin, Kristen is a breeder and she is the most caring breeder. I would put her up against anybody for the way that she takes care of these dogs. Betty has had two litters for Kristen and they've been really big litters. Really? And the pups that the, that dog has created have been, they're the most adorable, beautiful God, they're beautiful dogs. And what's super fun is, is Kristen keeps in touch with all of the people that she, that have puppies from these dogs that she breeds. Betty's children. But then also Betty's grandchildren because some of those dogs have had pups and they're all you know, what's your bread? Oh, yeah, and I'm telling you they all look Identical. I mean, it's shocking how much very white and like super white a fluffy dog. What can I love thee? Okay, you know Betty white Betty white is a big ball of hair Betty likes treats Um, she likes beef roast, you know, roast beef. But she's had too much, so she's kind of on a diet right now. Yeah. But when I go over to visit, uh, my sister, Betty knows exactly where to go by the cupboard that has the treats. She likes chippies, so I feed her potato chips. Um, she likes, it's, it's John, you clearly like dogs. Why don't you have a dog? Because my wife is mean. No. All right, here's the thing. You're gonna be empty nesters not too far with the future. We were until we weren't. Yeah I think you guys should get a little dog. Well, here's what here's the deal Becky grew up on a farm and dogs were always kind of utility Oh, did we lose you KG? I think we lost him. He had to go feed the dogs. Yeah, he had to go feed the dogs. But anyways, uh, nice talking to you KG. This has been great. Um, yeah, she had dogs and the dogs were meant for utility purposes. So they're kind of smelly and wet and stinky and part of the farm, but they love the dogs like Bruno In fact, they had a statue made of Bruno. But they weren't cuddly dogs. I don't think it's stuffed. They weren't, they were different. Not exactly cuddly dogs. Yeah, farm dogs are dogs that would rip your throat out if, if, yeah. I mean, they, they had the potential to be some really tough dogs. But beautiful, big dogs. as much as I would like to have a dog, they're a lot of work. Yeah, they are. And there are a lot and, and if you wanna be a good dog owner, like Kevin and Chrissy, the one thing I have to say about Kevin, and I'm sure you're the same, Kevin always has an excuse to get to go home early from things because somebody's a hundred percent gotta manage the dogs. Gotta take'em out for a walk. A hundred percent. Hopefully get a four for four. Can you explain what a four for four is? Kevin Well that's when they do both water pot and backend work and it's a perfect walk. And they're done for a few hours. Yeah. When you get the four for four. I thought that was a McDonald's order. It is. This is just different. Um, but they're a lot of work. They are. And actually it And there's some expense involved. There's expense, um, and they also, they, they strap you to your house. You have to be back to them. You can't. Which is exactly why I would want one. It's rough. It's rough, but, um, we are. My wife's home all day. Yeah, so she can kind of care for it. But when we go away for a weekend, one of our kids has to help my mom, somebody's got to help with the dog. And that's kind of a new thing for us. We haven't been, you know, we haven't had a dog for a long time. So it's kind of a pain and we had a cage and there was a whole, we were trying all kinds of training and it didn't work so great. So my wife doesn't like to put the dog in a cage and yeah, it's like, Kevin, you, your dogs roam free. Don't they, don't they have the run of the house? Inside, but they don't roam free outside. They roam free inside. Yeah, I've gone there when they were little. We put them in a crate when they were really tiny, just so they wouldn't get into things and, you know, get to start chewing on something or getting in any trouble, but no, now that they're fully grown, they, they roam free throughout the day, but where they don't, they're not alone for more than four hours at a time. I can tell you that right now. Yeah, that's the thing. You have time limits. Well, and your dogs, there have been a couple of occasions when Becky and I have stopped by your house and you haven't been there. And the dogs, they have like this sixth sense that someone's at the door before you even knock on the door. Yeah, they do. Like they know somebody's there. And let me tell you, they let you know. Vicious. That there are vicious dogs on the other side of that door. Well, they get excited. They do. Yeah, they, they love people. They just want to see people. Yeah, that's kind of their job, just to alert everybody. Now, since I was talking about, uh, Betty White and Betty's, uh, joy of some, some snacks, I have had the, uh, the, the privilege of watching Kevin feed His little pooch is Fenner's and Brooks. And one of the dogs, like you have to feed them by hand because the other one will eat their food. Explain to me the, the dynamic of, uh, of food time. Well, Fenway is the alpha. And if there's any. Loose food that brooks hasn't got to and in quick order then he will gobble it up So what the latest thing we've done in the last couple of years since you've seen us last is chrissy has these really unique Triangular pizza plates made for humans to eat pizza on But now we take little scoops of their soft food and put them on the pizza plates And put on each side of the kitchen floor and then brooks has his soft food benway has his soft food Nobody's stealing anybody's food Fantastic. Bella's got about 16, so we have to make the food mushy too. So that's the whole, she's got, yeah, it's, you have to do that kind of a lot more work than normal. Bottom line is, yeah, you'll never regret having one. They, they give you so much love. You'll get way more than you give. Yeah, it's true. They're just constant. Um, I will say I, I'm, I kind of, I'm interested in this mini version of the show. This is kind of interesting. We're not really getting into kind of stuff, but this is like a little feature, but I think the quick little. Yeah, it's a 4th of July special. Yeah, I think it's a 4th of July special, and I think that dogs are aside. They are special. Dogs are an important part of people's lives. They enrich us, for sure. Yeah, I mean, I can't imagine going to Michigan, honest to God, without Milton being there. Yeah. Because I just, I get so excited, and he, You know, he does the milty dance, and that's when you take a piece of bacon, do the bacon dance, and you hold it up above him, and he gets on his back feet, and he dances around, and he I'm sure I overfeed him while he's there. If I had a dog, that would be a really fat dog. So last question That's tough, yeah. What is Do you, does your dog ever get to eat non like animal food? No, only at, uh, my mother in law's house. So she just was up there last weekend and she got little beef treats and like, it was not, it's not animal treats. It's like, you know, a little cheese, meat, cheese wraps or something. But the dog doesn't beg because she never gets any food. Just gets her food and that's it. How about, uh, uh, Fenny, Fenway and Brooks? Well, Christie's listening. So of course not. If I'm being totally honest, they love popcorn. And I do occasionally, like five times a week at night, have popcorn. And I will sometimes, oh, we'll pop them in a goblet. Jennifer does that, I should say, yes. They love popcorn. Well, and their dad, they got that from their dad. Yeah. You know. They did. They inherited that. Well, on that note, uh, happy 4th of July. Yeah. Love the dogs. And, uh, with that, off we go.
