The Kindness Chronicles
Catching up w/ KG (Wicked and Wild)
It has been a minute since we visited with our field "correspondent," KG. We tackle the tough topics like the hit movie Wicked (which has moments of beautiful kindness) and Wild Hockey (duh).
Well, if we were Siskel and Ebert, I'll let you be the bald one, I'll be the fat one. Yeah. I'd give it two thumbs up. I can fit you in a mold. Right? Two thumbs up? Yeah, double thumbs for meWelcome to the Kindness Chronicles, where we hope to inject the world with a dose of the Minnesota Nice that it desperately needs. We're having a Catching Up with KG segment. KG, how are ya? Good, Johnny. Um, it's fun to catch up with you, too, and hear about Thanksgiving and all the good things going on. For me, it's a, if you're going to do the kindness chronicles, this is the time of year where it probably matters the most with the holidays. Yeah. So take us back. What, uh, did you have people in town for the holiday? Not as much people in town, but a lot of places to go within the twin cities, you know, my dad is Kenny's down at the Apple Valley village at a, in a assisted living situation. So we took cycles through to make sure his Thanksgiving was a decent one, even though he couldn't be technically with the family. Um, Chrissy's sister, Terry, who you know well, hosted one of the gatherings in the early part of the day. And then my sister, Kelly, hosted, uh, in the later stages of the day. And then, of course, our Thanksgiving tradition, as we've talked about here on the show, it always ends with a Thanksgiving night movie. I had seen Wicked, so the girls, um, all went to see Wicked. The boys went and saw a movie called Bonhoeffer, and, uh, yeah, it was a great holiday. How about you? Our Thanksgiving, uh, celebration starts on Wednesday night. We always, uh, celebrate Grandma Connie's birthday. She turned 88. Um, so that was a festive occasion. uh, it was really fun. We, um, made some, uh, yummy grilled cheeses. Cheeses? Jesus. Grilled cheese with bacon on the, uh, on the blackstone, and we had chili and soup. Yeah, it was fantastic. And then, you know, of course, Thursday is quite the production. We had the post it notes going, my sister in law got me this new potato peeler, this automatic potato peeler. And it is a game changer. You put this thing in and like it peels the potato in one long string of peel. It's amazing. that sounds like a real fun project. Cause you were in charge of the, uh, I was in charge of peeling the potatoes, cause usually that's kind of a crap job. Um, it was very entertaining. I had a lot of fun with it, but yeah, you know, some good football was on all the teams that I wanted to win lost. So that was, uh, not always the best outcome, but, uh, saw the movie wicked. I decided that, you know, KG's got a tradition of seeing a movie. So. On the, uh, Saturday after Thanksgiving, we went and watched, uh, Wicked as a family. And, man, what a show. Yeah, it's, it's one of the best movies I've seen in years. It's, I know it's two hours and forty minutes, and people get a little nervous when you hear the length, but it does not feel like that long. Like, let me give you an example. There have been other movies, Schindler's List is a fantastic movie, but because of the subject matter, you're kind of getting squirmish in your chair, and in the last half of the movie, it is, it's a long movie, and that's part of the, Cinematic experience when you see a movie that heavy a subject with wicked you're entertained the entire time. It is fast moving It is spectacular And honestly, it's a must see but there is a moment during that movie that really Kind of stood out to me as a kindness chronicles kind of a moment and I just wanted to get your take on it the scene where Elfie or elfa bub or whatever her name was Um The, uh, Alphaba, the, uh, the Wicked Witch, was being, I don't know, bullied by the rest of her classmates, until G'Linda, or is it G'Linda, um, G'Linda, G'Linda, Does, um, does something during the movie, and I don't want to, to wreck it, but it really, it was very heartwarming, very touching. And was kind of like the, uh, the pivot point during the movie. And it was all about kindness, and the bravery that goes with stepping in when somebody's being bullied, and I just thought it was very cool. It was a great message, uh, for young people because I'm certain that this happens on the playground, at school yard, wherever. I mean, it happens all the time. We all lived through it, we've all seen it, and then, you know, in a movie like that, to have that type of pivot point. I don't, again, I don't like to spoil it for, for, for folks, but absolutely. Uh, fits in the message we're trying to promote with this podcast on a weekly basis and that relationship throughout the movie was interesting to me too. Like how it started, how it finished, um, you know, that the dynamics, those two are, are such scene stealers. They're both so dynamic. Oh my goodness. It's like. I'm not a big Ariana Grande guy, I've heard the name, I've seen some of the stuff over the years. She is remarkable, but as good as she is, and she's elite at her craft, she might be outdone by her co stars. I mean, they're both so Unbelievably talented. Uh, yeah, I've seen the Broadway show a handful of times and I didn't think the movie could come close to topping it, but I have to say it did. Like, it honestly topped it for me. Um, and I can't wait, you know, this is not a spoiler. I don't think, I think people realize next year at this time we get part two. did they film both parts? Like it's, it's all in the can. It's all ready to go. I would assume. So my understanding they did, yeah, that's all done already. And then they're going to sit on it for a year and then it's going to be, uh, just imagine, you know, the hype this year was unbelievable. I know most theaters here in the twin cities, it was on at least three or four screens. And I don't know if you're, you're screening on, on Black Friday, but on Thanksgiving night when the girls went and saw it, it was absolutely packed, sold out, every screen, um, so I think they're doing pretty well. Yeah, my goodness, we saw it in, at the Marcus Theatres on their gigantic screen, okay? That's the way to do it, that's the right way. It was incredible, and, but I'm gonna have a get off my lawn moment. It is shocking how loud those movie theaters can be the the oh god, I know the dolby whatever whatever and The Lucasfilms, that ILM or whatever it's called, it's too loud. It's like, just turn it down. I totally agree. And it's not just me. I mean, when you can feel it, like, in your chest, like, I feel like my heart isn't beating at the normal level when they cranked that thing out. It was, it was nuts. But, very entertaining, very heartwarming. Uh, can't wait to see part two when that comes out my son ben who is sitting next to me You know, he's the legos phenom. He said, you know, yeah, he's unbelievable When do you suppose that train will be available in legos? And when do you think? I mean seriously He said he he sees everything as a legos opportunity and uh, yeah very uh, think about the money they're gonna make with that like the promotion like all that type of stuff i've already been out I think we all maybe got a little started our Christmas shopping and everywhere you go, whether it's target or at the, at some of the stores at the mall, like you can see the wicked paraphernalia creeping in and it's, it's one of those generational movies and you know, I worried john in the months leading up to it because there was so much hype around it. We've been watching previews for literally a calendar year, and I get nervous. I'm like, I don't know if this one's gonna be like as good as people are making it sound like it should be. But back to what we talked about at the start of this conversation. It's far, far exceeded my expectations, like, yeah, I will see it. Multiple times in the theater, and I will be entertained every time because it's just such a cool show. Well, if we were Siskel and Ebert, I'll let you be the bald one, I'll be the fat one. Yeah. I'd give it two thumbs up. I can fit you in a mold. Right? Two thumbs up? Yeah, double thumbs for me. Oh, 100%. Yeah. Um, let's pivot to your profession. You're following the Minnesota Wild. What a fun season it has been. Yeah. You've got to be loving. Yes. It's remarkable how different a year can be like a year ago at this time. Gene Everson had just lost his job. They were so far behind in the standings that you kind of knew, um, in early December last year that they likely weren't going to be a playoff team. And now you page to this year and two months into it, they are at the top of the NHL standings. Now, I don't think that is, male. that they're dealing with, but 4 as we as we record this on Tuesday afternoon. And they've played a bulk of their games on the road. They've already had some of these injuries. The goaltending spend above and beyond Philip Gustafson has the best goals against average and the best saved percentage in the National Hockey League. And, oh, by the way Mark Andre Fleury just turned 40 years old. He's played six games, many of the games in difficult scheduling conflicts like second of back to back, on the road, travel, and he's not lost a game. He's 5 0 1. So, yeah, they're, they're um, They're showing that they're a true contender. They have the star power with Kaprizov and Boldy at the top. Brock Faber, our local kid, is showing no signs of a sophomore slump after that awesome rookie year last year. The injuries aren't a thing right now. And it's certainly something to track. It feels like Jonas Brodine is going to miss some significant time. They're coning an upper body. Um, we don't know what part of the upper body I would guess to be maybe a back issue, but he's out. Um, Zuccarello's been out for at least three weeks and probably at least two or three more. Those are two really important players. Lauco's hurt right now. He's an energy guy that's been a great addition. So certainly some, some hurdles to overcome here. But, you know, right now, the Wilder, the talk of the league, and they just made a big trade with Columbus to bring in a kid that's, I don't want to call him a bust yet, but he was the six pick in the draft a couple years ago, and he, he just hasn't found that type of form in Columbus. Billy Guerin gave up a boatload of picks. And a nice player, uh, on our, on our, um, farm system team to get him. And I think it's a great roll of the dice. So there's a lot of buzz about the wild right now, Johnny. You know, I think that what they should do with that new defenseman that they got to send them over to KOC, you know, Kevin O'Connell, you know, he does great with guys that are, uh, that are draft busts. It appears seems that way. Well, and it feels like the wild are comfortable saying. Whatever went on in Columbus, there was a lot of pressure involved. You know, he's got a big shot. He's a right handed six foot four defenseman that they need. And it's like, the wild have a guy named Andy Ness, and I think you know The best family is from that Hill Murray circle, uh, you know, in your realm out there on each side and he's really considered one of the top skating coaches in the league. His mom, Diane, long time coach with the Olympic team. Like this is a coach that can get the most out of a guy like this. That you've looked at the development of Kaprizov and Boldy and even Faber. He's got his fingerprints all over that. So don't sleep on the anti ness factor and, and realize that I think this kid, um, because he's got the physical size and the shot, um, is, is going to be a guy that the wild develops slowly, realizing that if this thing works out and this guy ends up being a big time contributor for the wild in power play situations, this can be a home run. And it's worth the risk right now because Damon Hunt, the player they lost. Is kind of right now with where they've got their blue line set up kind of the odd man out so you don't lose anything there. He'll probably get a better look in Columbus and then look what the draft picks. If the wild are legit this year, that first round draft picks not going to be anywhere close to the top 15. So now it's a bottom end first round pick and the rest of the picks. Uh, you know, third and fourth round picks. We don't worry about too much when you've got a stockpile of young talent. So I think it was a good roll the dice. I don't think there's any guarantee. This guy's going to be a superstar, but he was picked six overall in the draft in 2022. He is only 21 years old and in any sport, those tall, gangly big guys. And if that's the case, um, they might have something here is Diane Ness is she still, uh, coaching teaching? Oh, yeah. I don't I think she's throttled down her schedule a little bit because she used to like she would fly over the country this time of year and work with guys. And you know, they were getting off the injured reserve list. And then she's I think she's tone that schedule down and I think she's more local now. Yeah. She is fantastic. What exactly does she do? For example, like if I called Diane Ness and said, I need to be a better skater. And would she start with like the folding chair on the ice? You know, doing the well in the push off with the one or what is she doing to teach these people how to skate so much better so we did. We used to do these instructionals in the summer with Diane and we bring Zach for easy out who's been a long time. I think for 15 years he worked with her and his time in the league and we would go through some of the basics and then some of the high end stuff they work on. Yeah. They would start with the basics, the stride and how to get the most power out of your stride. And then it's repetition, and then it's conditioning, and so there's levels, and it always starts at the, at the root of the whole thing, which, the knee bend, and the, and the push, and using the edges, you know, the best skaters in the league, and Kirill Kaprizov's a perfect example, for maybe people that don't under, understand, and it can be complex. But look at Kirill Kaprizov and the way he's able to dart in and out of space and take hits and not get knocked off the puck. It's all because of his strong edges. And so that's where she would start. Building out the foundation in your stride. Building out those edges. And then with the high level guys, like this guy. I watched him the last couple days at practice. He can skate just fine, but he's 6'4 So it looks a little different. It's not as That's where an Andy Ness or a Diane Ness to kind of hone in and build them up to a different level. And I think that's the exciting part of the wild is you've got this project now that could end up being a really big fixture in your organization. And you've got, in their eyes, the type of coaching staff that can get the most out of them. So they took the chance. And I, I do think it's, it's kind of a fun project. You know, if you're a fan of the Minnesota Wild, the season's going well, you've got these superstar players playing at a high level, you've got the goalie, like, we, we could have something here, like, this is, this is exciting, and I think, um, the Vikings kind of stealing all the headlines right now, they're kind of flying under the radar, and that's fine, but, um, to be two months into the season, and to have the most points in the NHL, I don't think anybody saw this coming, I'll include myself, In that, in that list as well. Yeah, I think at the beginning of the season you were A little pensive about what the future might hold but So far so good, so strong edges I got a feeling that my edges would not be described as the strongest of edges Um, well, no, probably not ankles very, you know, kind of thin legs So did you ever take skating lessons as a goaltender? What kind of skating, uh, lessons would a goaltender be engaged in? I took early, you know, early on in my, I started skating when I was five or six, I took the basic skating lessons, but once I made the decision to go the route of goaltender, I would specifically just go to goaltending schools. And that would be more of, you would work on plenty of stuff, but it had less to do with skating. And more about building up leg strength. And back when I played in the late 70s and early 80s, it was all about Being able to go down, make a save, and get back up and get into position. Now, the size of the player, like the goalie, is a bigger player now. The equipment's bigger, so they play more of a block and slide. Back in my day, I was considered a butterfly goalie, so when I would go down, my pads would go out like pinball flippers on each side, and I'd try to cover the low part of the net with that, and then keep my chest up and try to catch or block the shots to the high corner. Then the idea was, you go down and get back up. So we did. A ton of like, and I'm telling you, they were hard. You do 60 second intervals where you go 60 seconds dropping your knees and getting back up for 60 seconds. Then you wait and catch your breath for 60. And then you go back. You do 10 rotations of that. You're about ready right now. I couldn't do it. Like, I'm sad to say right now, I'd be at the ER in cardiac arrest. But that was the style of play. You know back in the day as they say I was thinking about having you over in the garage and I would Shoot some tennis balls at you And just see what watching you get up and down would look like because if it looks anything Like me getting up and down Uh, not gonna be pretty. No, it's like just dial nine one Because the next one is coming any moment now Can you help our listeners find that video footage of you speaking of? Going down and getting back up. It was a couple of winters ago and you had your security camera on in the garage and you were coming home from some event late at night and it was icy. You know what? I don't recall that. Oh, I recall the video. Oh God. So some people have seen the video and I just, uh, to be clear, I was going out to, uh, bring something to the garbage and, um, I was a little heavier at that point and I was wearing, uh, as my children would call it a grout fit. So I had like a. Gray hooded sweatshirt on and some gray sweatpants. And I looked like a big, fat, naked person rolling around on the ground. And, uh, there were curse words. And there was heavy, heavy breathing. Yeah, it was, it was not my best moment. But, yeah, there's so many stories that go along with that. You know, I've had people, I was at a function. This week where these people who I didn't even know said, oh yeah, I know who you are. You're the guy from that video that fell and was cursing up a storm, and then the new University of Minnesota president apparently saw the video. I mean, it's just, oh, no. Yeah. You know. Well, by the way, I'm, I'm glad you brought that up, honestly. Um, we, we've gotta circle back to the Penn State game. A couple of Saturdays ago for, for Gopher football, uh, my better half Chrissy was, uh, lucky enough to be invited to be, uh, your family's special guest and you were on the field at halftime with said president of the University of Minnesota, John, take it away. Well, it wasn't half time. It was during the third break of the first quarter. Um, I'm sorry, I was misinformed. Half time was reserved for the band and all that kind of excitement. Yes, of course. University of Minnesota put on a really nice event for, the Freemasons. We had a tailgate function at the McNamara, center in that room that's off to the side. I mean, it's a beautiful space. Great food. you were invited, by the way. I think you might have been out of town. But, it would have been great to have one of our favorite minor local celebrities to be among us. Oh, boy. But, yes, we were, um, it was quite a lovely event. And, uh, we had made a new pledge to the University of Minnesota. And, yeah, it was very, it was very nice. But, yeah, the word got out about this stupid video. And then the video of me having the car stolen. Apparently that was shared. You know, in the spirit of the Kindness Chronicles, maybe we should focus on nice things, like you're doing right now, as opposed to falling on the, you know, and I have permanent injuries from that fall on the ice, by the way. Of course you do. That was a, that looked like a painful fall. It isn't all, like, right. If you recall, I said, my knee. And then when Riley said, Riley came out with her sweet little voice, what happened? And I think I said something like my F in knee. I fell on my F in ice. There was words, and I apologize for the children, but you know what, you gotta hear those words at some point anyway, so get over it. Um. Exactly, it's nothing they haven't heard before. Right, right. So who did the Wild have tonight? They have the Vancouver Canucks who happen to have, like the Wild, 10 road wins. They have a goalie named Lankanen who has yet to lose on the road. Uh oh. He has 10 starts on the road. He's 10 0. It's never happened in the history of the National Hockey League. So the Wild have that challenge. They're going to try to give him his first loss of the year on the road and I do. I like the setup tonight for the wild because Vancouver left on November the 22nd on this road trip. And this is the 6th game of the 6 game road trip. So they're going back home after this game. So maybe they got one foot out the door. They did not have a morning skate today. So I think they've spent enough time together already. They practiced in Saint Paul yesterday. They've been here for three days. Oh, wow. And uh, so hopefully the cold weather and the two week road trip, there's some intangibles that I think give the wild a pretty fair shot at victory. And then we go back, and again, it feels like we've been on the road all year. We go back for a quick trip here this weekend. We get to warm up out in California. We play the Ducks in Anaheim on Friday, and we play the Kings in LA on Saturday. The team goes on to play Utah next Tuesday, but that's a nationally televised game. So a bunch of us on the television side, the TV crew, are taking a red eye home after the Kings game Saturday. We're taking a midnight flight back home to Minnesota. We land at like 5 in the morning, which will be kind of exciting. Very exciting. Hey, um, one last thing before we let you go. Your take on the Hunter Biden pardon. No, I'm kidding. We're not going to do that. Yeah. Um, politics don't usually make it to the show and I'm very thankful for that because number one, I don't follow it. And number two, I don't touch it. How's your fantasy team doing? You know, we survived last night. We needed a big game out of Jerry Judy and a big game out of Courtland Sutton and both our guillotine teams, uh, survived. So we're, we're down to the final five out of 18. And I'm feeling pretty good. Thanks for asking. Well, I know it's, that's far more important to you than the state of the world by the state of the United States. Yes. No, I, I literally, um, I lose sleep if I can't have the results I need for fantasy. I get upset and it's pathetic and it's childish and my significant other reminds me on a regular basis, just what a joke it is. But I care so much about and like she said, they don't care about you. And it's not even real football, but it is to me. And that's all that really matters. I love it. So much. I'm taking a red high home from California, so I don't miss an NFL Sunday of football. That's where we are at age 57. Oh my God. So I have, I haven't played fantasy in forever and I haven't fantasy. Oh my God. What was that? I'm in the car wash now. I mean, you'd catch me You know what though? I appreciate a guy that likes a nice clean car. That's, uh, especially this time of year. I don't wanna get that crap all over my school when I get to the game tonight. No, you can't have that. Um, yeah, you, why don't you hit the mute button for just a second while you're going through the car wash. And I'm gonna talk for a minute about my fantasy football team. So I haven't had a fantasy football team in quite some time and, uh, over the holiday, it's a family, it's a family affair, and I decided to play some my, uh. Grand Nephew Gavin could play, cause you have to have an even number. And somebody asked me, so how's your fantasy team doing? And I said, I, I really don't have any idea whatsoever. Um, I did know that I, I got the first pick. And it's a 10 team deal, so I had the first pick and the 20th pick. And I took Christian McCaffrey, how's that working out Because that's what it said to take, and essentially when we did the draft, I just took the next best player available. And I guess, as of last week, I was like in second place, so Sometimes you just gotta follow The statistics and make a decision from there. Are you done with the wash yet? Are you in the rinse cycle? I'm at the tail end right now. I do apologize. I didn't realize how loud it was going to be. Well, no, I didn't realize it was going to be this loud. Like I, I thought I could sneak through. Have you ever been in a canoe wash before? Because, you know, there's Wow, now the end of it is the dry part of it. I knew this would be loud. It's very loud, but that's okay. We'll edit most of this out, but we might keep some of it in just for, for the fun of it. One last thing. I listen to K Fan every once in a while. And I was listening to it the other day, and one of the funniest names was brought up. They were referring to, um, Kevin O'Connell, the Vikings coach, as our Kevin ly father. Have you heard them talk about our Kevin ly father? That might be a little too much. I know! It seems almost sacrilegious, but, uh, that guy is a heck of a coach. He really does seem like he knows what he's doing. Kevin. Yeah, he seems not only does he seem like a really good coach, he seems like he really cares about his players. And he just like, he seems like a genuinely good human being. Yeah. And I think when you've got that many players, you know, 50 was a 53 people on that roster. Um, I think that plays well, if you can walk that line and still have the respect, but also you know. Oh. Like I heard a conversation they let they let one of their D backs go a week ago, and he talked about on the radio. He had a conversation with Paul Allen about how that process works. I thought it was a great question by PA to kind of pick his brain. He said, Listen, when you have that conversation with the player, it is really hard. I've been on the other side, so I can relate to the player. And what you want to do is you want to give them some help, like some constructive criticism, and you want to set them up for success somewhere else. And so I feel like he's that guy and I think that that plays really well and those players when you, you know, because of social media, we get to see that that 60 second clip after every win when when he's given out those game balls and I always watch the players to see how attentive they are. And they are just locked in to KLC when he's talking. And I think that tells me everything I need to know, like, about him and his coaching staff, and that mutual respect they have with the players. And I think that's part of the reason they've been able to win games they probably would have lost in other years. Like, I look at the game this past weekend, they didn't play very well. Uh, Arizona, frankly, was the better team. But Minnesota has been finding ways to win all year, and I think part of that, maybe a big part of that, is the coaching staff. Yeah, I, had the, privilege of being down on the field, like you mentioned, during the Penn State game, before the game, and it was senior day. And all of the seniors were there with their parents, and, people talk about P. J. Fleck, and they make fun of him, and, that he's, he seems like a narcissist and all that stuff. But I sincerely believe that that guy also just has such great love for the guys that are, in that room, yes. Yeah, I, what was, are you driving your Maserati today or what was that noise? My goodness. Car next to me at the stoplight. One of those, one of those tough guys. Tough guys. Yeah, he wants to show off and drive real fast, even though we're on like a little side road. He was real important and he had to go somewhere real fast. Well, I hope it was an emergency. Let's just assume positive intent because this is the Kindness Chronicles. He probably either had a. Restroom situation that needed to be addressed or he was going to save a puppy from a, a drowning situation. Well, yeah. Wasn't that the deal with the Viking wide receiver? Wasn't he driving like 150? He was on 404 to his dog, let his dog out or something. I think that was, was that Jordan Addison, you know? Yes, yes. Yeah. Who let the dogs out? Oh boy. But back to, back to pj, like the, the, the crowd surfing in the locker room, the connection he has with those kids the way he's. Able to recruit. I listen, it's Minnesota football. They're never going to be Ohio State. They're never going to be Michigan. They're never going to be Penn State. They can beat these teams occasionally. But for what we have here in the cornfields, I think he's done a pretty damn good job. The criticism that people give him and maybe it's rightfully so. Is the fact that he's been able to re up his contract three or four times and he's making a boatload of money But you can't begrudge him for that. Like this guy's done a good job. His kids are good citizens. They do well in the classroom uh, they do the university proud and They win more often than they don't and they they end up playing a bowl game And I don't think it's a bad thing. Like, I, I get the criticism, but I think it's a little bit overdone. He is the highest paid state employee, when you think of it like that, which is pretty interesting. And, uh, one of my favorites He's a great self promoter, man. Oh, he is. That, he is. But there's nothing wrong with that. Like, I, see, I don't That, people think that's a negative. That's not a negative. Like He knows how to sell himself. That's why he's a good recruiter. And, you know, people will, if he's such a good recruiter, why doesn't he go to the bigger bowls? Well, because the tradition of winning at Minnesota You can't walk into a kid's living room and think you're going to wow them over in Alabama and Ohio State. I mean, just, there are blue bloods that are always going to be blue bloods. And I don't think there's any coach that's ever going to come here and turn that tide.
