The Kindness Chronicles
The Kindness Chronicles
Masters, Wild, CC4KTC
What week. The Masters, the Wild and another fun fundraiser to promote. we are joined by Roger McNear and our friend, Jeff Hoffman IN STUDIO! Big fun.
Welcome to the Kindness Chronicles, where once again, quit doing that. We hope to inject the world with a dose of the Minnesota kindness that it most desperately needs. We have a full house. Yeah, Pete, I don't, maybe more people are coming tonight, but in studio we've got Steve Brown. Hi everybody. Hello. We've got, our guest, uh, Roger McNair, who's gonna be talking to us shortly. Not yet, sir. About the, the, did you see my lips start to curl? Well, there's something going on over there. And then my friend Jeff Hoffman is here. And, uh, we're gonna talk to Jeff A. Little bit about what, I'm not sure, Jeff's taking notes in the corner over here. He's taking notes, which is very bizarre. And then on the, uh, on the line we got, kg kg. Where are we calling you at? Just left Minnetonka. I'm heading, uh, to Northeast Minneapolis on this beautiful night as we record it is Spring has sprung here in the Twin Cities and I'm excited for, uh, all of that. But, uh, yeah, looking forward to the conversation night. As always, guys. Uh, it's, uh, a lot of kindness in the air. We'll get to some kindness in St. Paul. Last night. We saw a ton of it, uh, in Augusta with Rory McElroy. Uh, just a spectacular edition of the Masters. Fantastic. Um, what's going on in Northeast Minneapolis? Well, as you know, I, um, I cross pollinate and, and thank you to Minnesota Masonic Charities. Title, sponsor of Wooden Sticks. We're doing a live show at Insight Brewing tonight. Our special guest will be, uh, legendary Wild Gold, Devin Nik, and that God for you. Um, wow. He was waiting for that one. I have a Devon Nik story. I, I, I so our former CFO who used or who lives in Edina. One time got the dry cleaning for Devin Nik, was delivered to her house instead of to his house. And I think he must be an Edina resident, but her son, was an Edina high school hockey player, first line, defenseman. Wow. So it was very exciting when Devin Nik came over and as I understand it, Devin Nik would be a great. Candidate to be on the Kindness Chronicles. Let's get him over here. Nah, he ain't. Once he's done the sticks, he doesn't cross back this way. No, no. Even with, even with the Masons involved. Damn. Yep. Damn. The wooden sticks conundrum. Yeah. We just, you know, but I, I'm cross pollinate now. I'm assuming the paycheck from Wooden Sticks is better than the one that he gets at the Kindness Chronicles. Um, yeah, but I probably get more, um, oxytocin from this one. That's true. Very good. Very nice. Yep. Well played. That's what we're looking for is oxytocin. So Kevin. Let's go back to Sunday afternoon at the Masters. What makes Roy McElroy easy got a root for is he's real. I think when Tiger Woods was at his almost robotic in the way he win f for. Some of those flaws came up during that Sunday round. I mean, he, he had that tournament in his hands. He washed it away on 13. What happened there? What was there with all nerves? Like it's just nerves. Like he could hit a hundred golf balls, uh, from that 80 yard spot and put 99 of them within 10 feet of the pin. Like it was an easy shot. He just opened up the face and, and he, he hit it fat, so to speak. And it just was a horrible miss. But he wanted it so much and the pressure, and over a decade since he's won a major, the, the career Grand Slam at Augusta, which has always haunted him. And then after all that, after blowing that big lead, he gets up on 15 and, uh, Justin Rose, his, his, you know, cup teammate is him at the top of the board. And he hits from 220 yards to seven iron that has to be perfect and has to land in the right part of the green. Otherwise it's gonna go back in the water, it goes over, you got no chance of making birdie. And he knocks it to six feet. And you know, I mean, just the way it all played out, you know, 18, he makes that mistake again, blows it again, gets the, and that, um, it was everything you hope for. Was Justin Rose and the class that he showed, truly enjoying that moment and then seeing Shane Lowry and Tommy Fleetwood and some of Rory's buddies waiting, uh, to hug him and embrace him as he walked to the clubhouse. It, it had all the feels hoppy his daughter, I mean, it, it just, him breaking down like that tournament, uh, and that moment, it's just, oh God, it's extraordinary. Is this a long story? Steve, you looked like you were really excited to talk about golf today. Well, I, I, I am not gonna pretend like I know anything. Please about it, please. I, I heard about it and uh, I knew it was kind of going on, but I wasn't, well, I actually tried to watch, I couldn't find it anyway. I think it was too late. But it sounds to me like they played right. He played right into the sports producer's. Oh, God. Without question, man. I mean, he, I think he was going for drama kg. I think Mission accomplished. Yeah. He's going for the, bringing it down and then third act boom. Sounds like he, oh man, he knows what he's doing. I. He would've preferred to cruise to victory if he, I'm sure could have kept his nerves together. It just, I think he's human and, and I think he's, he's been that guy for a long time. He's an easy guy to root for. I been traveling all weekend with a while, so I had a chance to watch a ton of it, but we landed in time to get back to the couch for the back nine. Uh, and that's where all the action was. Like the, the old cliche is. Doesn't start until the back nine on, on Sunday. And, and this absolutely fulfilled that to be true. Are you a Bryson Debo guy? I am. And, and, and the young lady I live with is not, and that's fine. Um, and I'm not a live guy, but I believe Bryson Dembo is great for golf. He's, um. He's energetic, he's fun. And I think the, the narrative after the masters got blown out the porch and everybody's down on Bryson because he was to the same. Rory wouldn't talk to me during the round, but it was taken completely outta context. Nobody talks to each other on, on a Sunday at any major, much less the. You're gonna battle. And so I think that got a little bit over overblown, so to speak. But no, I love Bryce in the shamble. Yeah. I do like the way that he interacts with the crowd and, you know, he's, he's high fiving guys and or he is doing this thing where he's letting people touch his forearms. Like he walks down the line and he is like, touch me. It seems very like a religious experience for people. But even, even, uh, Rory was doing some high fives. I thought it was real sweet how. Shane Lowry was waiting for him and, you know, yes. Yeah. Very, very fun. Okay, now, Minnesota Wild, I just have to tell you what I was doing last night. I was watching the Calgary game, and they were losing three to one, and I thought it was the end of the game. And it was just the end of the second period, Calgary came back and ended up winning that game, which made the goal by, uh. Eck in the, what? 20 seconds left in the third period. Yeah. That was it. The wild, and, and Calgary has one more game tomorrow, I guess in theory they could have lost, but they're playing an LA team, like the Vegas team they played last night, that is locked into their play spots. So they're not, they're not playing all their, their best players, which is what you do. This I. What made it incredible is they hadn't really been able to get many chances in that final five or six minutes, and they pull the goalie and they're not getting anything going. And Anaheim clears the fuck and the wild start that sequence behind their own net with like 38 seconds to go and the odds of them getting all the way in the zone possessing the fucking, making a player are are not very good at that point. And they dump it in, which is another talking point because. Wraps it around the wall and makes the play like he holds the hits the puck. And I'm gonna tell right now, nine out 10 players in this league can't make the play he makes. And, and most of'em get that puck picked off and the game's over because there's three guys in between him and Matt Bold. But he, instead of shooting the puck at the net and hoping that ER Bold can get a rebound, which is what most guys would do, he decides to make this incredible pass through the three players and. Good enough to sees on the other side of the net, doesn't shoot the puck, which is what most players would do in a panic late situation in the game. With the clock ticking down, he has the the presence of mind to shuffle it over to and then gets the shot that is stopped incredible saved by the Anaheim goalie, and then X stays in position to chip in the rebound. And literally there was so much tension in that building last night. The roof came off the building and then that led. To the wild. Okay. The one point they needed, now they're in, and here comes the kindness angle. Guus skates to the bench after the buzzer goes up to Coach Hines and says, Hey, that point got us in, we're in right coach. And he says, yep, we're in now. And he goes, Hey, put flower in. And so that, I've never seen this. Oh wow. It's a tie game. And now they're putting Mark Andre Flory in cold into an overtime game. And of course the building goes crazy. And of course they're chanting his name. And of course there's a penalty taken and Anon gets a PowerPoint and he's making all these incredible saves. He's double stacking the pads, he's doing the poke check. One Pocock hits the post and he's talking to the Post. I mean, it just was incredible. And then the game ends, Boldy wins it. The Ducks line up to shake his hand, the wild circle up and give him all this love, and the crowd stays there to chant his name with his family in Intendance. Honestly, it's as good as it gets. I got choked up people. They were in that building, have. Realizing in that moment like this, this should be flowers time. That's pretty cool. Might be the last time he ever plays in his brilliant career. Awesome. And he got the win. He gets the win. He got the W win number 5 75. He got the great call, Johnny. Great call by you. He'd get the win. how about ovechkin? Uh, this is gonna be it for hockey talk. Yeah. We're pretty deep into the sport. We're into the sports. It sounds like a great moment. I'm, I let it go to one sticks right now, and there was a I'll let it go. I like I the kindness part of it too. There was another great moment. Let's hear, uh, Ovechkin, eclipsed Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record. Yes. How about that? And I just love the fact that Gretzky, you know, was there. He and his wife are there to, to congratulate Ovechkin and his family. His, his wife and kid Ovechkin did Okay in the marriage department. I don't know if you ever, he did just fine. I'm not sure if you saw any pictures of Mrs. Ovechkin, but, uh, she's, well, she's okay. Okay. She's at least a seven. I'll check. Yeah, I'll check it out. On a scale of one to six at her teeth too, hopefully. Yeah, her teeth are fantastic. She's got'em all capped. Ovechkin on the other hand. He's missing one right up top and he probably doesn't care. No, he probably doesn't. But Gretzky handled that with so much class, and I love that he had the Gordy Howell, uh, pin on his jacket to, to show some love to the, and as his dad said, like, listen, whoever breaks any of your records, if it ever happens, make sure that you show the kind of grace to them. That absolutely on he, well, this has been the Chronicles. Wooden Sticks edition. Yeah, exactly. Happy to have you here. Um, we're gonna switch gears for a second here, and we're going to, uh, to bring into the conversation my friend Roger McNair. Worshipful brother Roger McNair. Not very. Wow. A member of, Helios Lodge. The Masonic Lodge, up in Cambridge, Minnesota. he's a former, uh, board chair of Minnesota Masonic Charities. He's been, uh, involved for a long time and he, and his friend Bill Weiss have been co-chairing a big event. To raise money for a number of, children's charities, and we asked Roger to come in. The event is, uh, taking place on May 3rd, as I understand it. May 3rd, first Saturday in May. First Saturday in May. Tell us about what this is called.'cause it's, it's a, it's a mouthful. It is a mouthful. And we abbreviate it to CC 4K TC, which that's the abbreviated version. Yeah. Yeah. So what would it be without the abbreviation, clays, camps for kids, twin Cities. It is a sporting Clays event to augment what Minnesota Masonic Charities does for the Masonic Children's Hospital and the Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain Effectually Children's Health in Minnesota. And it also supports the shrine, uh, the Shrine Shriners Hospital Camps it doesn't provide anything for the Shrine Hospitals. It only provides for the camps. For kids to teach'em self-reliance and give'em a chance to have fun like kids without limb discrepancies have. So is that the, is that the proper term limb discrepancies? I'm being sincere. it's not often, but, uh, take note. Yeah. That is what they say, you know, around the, healthcare, around the shrine. Okay. Very cool. So how long has this been going? How many people participate? Where do we find more information? This is trap shooting, right? They call it trap shooting too. Sporting. Sporting plays. Sporting plays, yeah. A little different than trap. It's different than, I don't know the difference. Okay. Yeah. Well, in trap, all your, all your shots are essentially going away from a central spot. Okay. And you're 25 yards behind it. Okay. Or 20 yards behind it. And in sporting clays, you travel a circuit with different clay throwers at. Different areas. So yeah, there's your's stations, right? Yeah. 10 It simulate essentially. Yeah. Simul simulates different hunting scenarios. Oh, even cool. Even a rabbit it'll roll up. Yeah. The rabbit's the only one I've ever had any success with.'cause you just aim low and hope like how it hit something. There's some vi I was looking at the website, I was looking at the visuals from, it's pretty cool. I, I didn't know the difference, but that's really cool. Yeah. It, it's, it's a fun game. It's, it's called golf with guns. Okay. Golf with guns. Yes. Yeah. And most men know the difference between trap shooting and sporting place. Well, thank, clarify. I'm not one of, of those men. I'm not one of'em. I'm, well, that's, we, I, you and I are, we represent all, all dudes out there to make sure they understand. Yes. We have real men and then we have guys like you and me. Yes. Well, you've even participated. You should know what the, I have John participated. Not I, let me just tell you a great, clays story. So one of my favorite moments of my life, and I'm not kidding, is I took Ben, our son Ben, out to the, uh, wings North. Wings North for the sporting Clays event. And on the very first hole, or the very first station, I think it was one of those rabbit ones, Ben had never. Done sporting clays before and the very first clay that came up, he knocked it right out of the air. Really nice, and he turned around and looked at me like. This is not hard. Yeah. Good hand eye coordination. Mm-hmm. And he did very well on the rabbit. And then reality sat in and I'm not sure that he hit another, uh, clay for, uh, for quite a while. But it was super fun. I mean, just him looking over his shoulder going, really, it was, it was very thrilling. How'd you do Not great. Okay. Not great. I am very, uh, I am an avid endorse man, as I like to say, as I know. Yeah. You know, he did do great though. Did he? He participated and helped us raise money. That's Mike. He looks at this guy. That's what he does right there. This guy. He knows how to put a twist on everything. Yeah. Roger's been around you for a while. He knows. Yeah. I've been around the block once or twice in my 75 years. Yeah. And, uh, he did come downstairs and saw all of my exercise equipment. What did you call it? Yeah, your, um. Antiques or, or what did you call'em? Window dressing. Yeah. Yeah. Towel racks, towel. There. Are there, there, there have been clothes that have dried on all of those, uh, all those items. Yep. I'm sure there have. Yeah. But that's Roger, uh, delivering some brotherly love for us. Yeah. Well, I try and be nice once in a while. That's terrific. When do you, uh, when is the deadline to sign up for? What does it, say it one more time? The deadline. CCC four, T-C-K-T-C-T. Boy. Yeah, that stutter really gets me. CC 4K, TC. deadline, The deadline will be May 3rd. Okay. If you come, may, may, people can come and show up and Yep. Sign up. Okay, cool. Yep. And they'll shoot a hundred birds and a hundred clay birds and have lunch, and there'll be silent auctions and live auctions and, and where's it at? Raffle games. It's down. At the Minnesota Horse and Hunt Club in Pryor Lake. Okay. That was, this will be our 14th year. Yeah. My bachelor party was there. Is that right? Yeah. Sporting Clay is for my bad. Wow. My brother organized it. Apparently. He's a man too. Saves a lot, mark. Great. There are hairy chest down here. Not me. I am smooth. How many people do you get for this? Typically? Last year we had 275 shooters. Wow. Yeah. Oh, wow. It split out over three courses. I think they have four total out there, right, Jeff? Yeah. Yeah. It's been a while, but we use three of'em and, and have their inside ballroom, for lack of a better term, to hold the rest of the, the event. Yeah. They put together a pretty good meal there too. Yeah, it's a nice burger bar with all the fixings and everybody walks through and gets what they need and. Off they go. Lots of taxidermy on the walls. Oh yes. Really? Lots of taxidermy on the walls. Yep. And a few taxidermy. One in Rome shooters. After they're done, there's, there's a few that are, that are probably eligible for taxidermy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This'll be our 14th year, and over those 14 years we've raised almost$450,000. Wow. Congratulations. That's a impressive, wow. That's great. You know, that is great. We're always looking for. Sponsorships. We, we have sponsorships that range from 250 to 15 to$20,000. Um, we have a local sportsman's club up in the her, in the Cambridge area that kicks in$15,000 to help us Wow. Make this reality, you know, so Minnesota Masonic charities is helping a little bit. A little bit, just a little. Just a little notably. Notably. That's great. I think we're buying lunch in Austin, Peterson Construction generally sponsors, you know, and they, they write a pretty good check. But, um, it, it's the individuals that come out that care about kids health and care about kids. So I just have to, uh, to a little tribute to uh, uh, my friend Roger here. he's been a, a brother Mason of mine for 20 years, uh, has been a very good friend. His wife Donna, we call her Madonna. we traveled to Tucson right before, uh, COVID. Yep. And, uh, we would go out for dinner and, uh, Roger and Donna, me and Becky, and. At one point, one of the waitresses foolishly asked if Roger and Donna were our parents. That did not sit well with Donna. Roger was fine with it. And Roger, if you see him, he looks like he's, uh, auditioning for, uh, the next Des Santa Claus. Four. Um, he's got the full white beard and stuff. But, um, if it's okay to talk about the fact that, uh, you've got Parkinson's Yeah, I do. And coming down the stairs into your. Into the dungeon sell. Yeah. Yeah. It was man cave. Thank thanks to Steve. I made it down without landing on my nose on top. Well, we're hoping that you make it back up because Yeah. I may go on all fours. Yeah. That, that, that's one way to do it. But, what I want to tell you is Roger is, still golfing. Yep. And he seems to be getting better the longer he's had Parkinson's. Not kidding. That's impressive. Yeah. Well, it impresses me well, because I'm pretty bad to begin with. No, it was only one way to go and that was up. You have gotten a lot better and um, you know, when you've got Parkinson's, you get the tremors, you get the shakes and. I'll never forget, and I'm just gonna admit this on air, I thought, how in the hell is he gonna put a golf ball on a tee? You know?'cause you got the tremors. Yep. Yeah. Well he's got these tees, they're like martini, what do you call'em? Like martini tees or something like that? That, yeah, that's what they call'em, martini tees. And he just, oh yeah, I in. Yep. And uh, he hits the drive right down the middle every damn time he hits the ball. And, uh, about six feet. But my favorite part is it goes farther than six feet. He's got this thing on the end of his putter that he doesn't even have to bend over to pick up the ball. Oh, the suction thing. It's got a little suction thing. So I got one for me. Yes, of course you did. I ordered one up. I I went to a golf Galaxy and I said, you got one of those things you can stick at the end of your putter to pick Oh yeah, right over here. They're typically for unbelievable people with Parkinson's, but, uh, you know, you can hope Oh, don't hope for bar. I know, I know, I know. But your, your bride is, uh, is a very, uh, strong advocate of the Michael J. Fox Foundation. She is, she's also a very strong advocate. Of Minnesota Sonic Charit. She is. Indeed. She is. Absolutely. Wow. But, uh, I just want to thank you for coming and if people are looking for information,. Well, they're welcome to check out our website at clay's camps for kids tc.org. Clay's camps for kids tc.org. Yeah. We'll put it on the uh, Facebook page as well. We'll. Yeah. Okay. We'll just make, put a link on there. And I, I did check it out. It was cool. Like great videos of kids and, you know, lots of shooting and it's cool. And so, well the event is on Derby Day, so I'm sure that being that you're at the Horse and Hunt Club, the Kentucky Derby will be on tv. Maybe we can do some fundraising around, uh, some of the, uh, the folks that are gonna be doing the shooting, picking some winners for the horse race. So that's kind of a fun little tie in. To the first Saturday in May for this great event. Yeah, maybe they'll come riding through the course blowing the fox hound. So, by the way, Kevin, the Kentucky Derby, when you go from the masters to the Kentucky Derby, I mean this is your time of the year hockey playoffs. Yeah. Spring is, it's pretty good. You know, we start with the, uh, the high school hockey tournament in March and then we roll right into the Masters and now we've got the hockey playoffs. Yeah, the Kentucky Derby is that, that first Saturday in May has always circled on my calendar. I'm, I'm hoping that the wild will still be playing, so I can, I can be doing, um, both, uh, my favorite loves when it comes to sports with hockey and horse racing. But yeah, it's, uh, what just a couple weeks away. Worlds are colliding. Do you have a, uh, favorite for the race yet? Well, I think the, the betting favorite's gonna be a horse named journalism. He, he's been running out in California. He is a really special horse, but in a 20 horse race, I, I can't, you know, I can't publicly say bet the favorite. I've got a horse named Sovereignty who, uh, is kind of under the radar right now. Eight 10 to one, uh, longtime trainer, bill Mott. he's a Hall of Famer. I would keep an eye on sovereignty for the Derby if you guys are gonna part taking any recreational activities that day. Sovereignty. Got it. By the way, our brides, Becky and Chrissy were in Arizona and came across a, uh, sports book down there, and they, uh, put some money on a couple of golfers for the masters. One of them being Rory McElroy at eight and a half to one. Not a good price, but he won. Well, tell, tell our listeners your great line, because Chrissy might still be laughing when, uh, when the, the screenshot came in that they had hit their masters ticket outta Rory. John with the wine of all wine here. It's, well, the plan was, so we also had Cory Connors, who was at 85 to one, and Corey Connors was in third place going into Sunday. And we thought, geez, at 85 to one, if we hit this one, yeah, we are, uh, we're gonna go to some fancy restaurants. And I just said, it looks like it's the, uh, the Culver's drive through for the four of us, the Rory Culver's. What a great line. No dessert though. People. No dessert. No, no, no. Uh, no concrete mixers for us. That's okay. It is, it's, it's always fun to, to, to cash one of those checks. Just, uh, last question for you, kg. I know you've got a big, uh, event with Devin Nikko. Good for you. Um, have you ever done sporting clays? I have not, um, like you, I spend more time indoors. Yeah. Um, I've got a lot of friends that that partake and I've been to the, uh, spot. It's a beautiful, yeah. It, uh, but I've never actually done any shooting. Circle the first, uh, Saturday in May twice. Like you got an eagle and make one of'em for you. I like that idea. There you go. Make one of'em for the time. I like that idea. Circle it twice. Kevin. Will you be at, uh, the Canterbury Park? Uh, for the Minnesota Horse Expo? I just got tickets for that from my daughter today. There's a. Uh, at Canterbury for all horse expos. When is the expo? Uh, looks like it's April 25th through the 27th, so I, around 20 slotted me. Uh, yeah, it's a, it's a cool thing and they've got a huge expo center out the track, so it's a, it's a great spot to do it. They got you shaking hands and kissing babies and talking to everybody. We do the best we can. We gotta, we gotta grow the game, that's for sure. Uh, incidentally, that voice that you were hearing is Jeff Hoffman and, uh, he is a listener to the podcast and in the spirit of a Seinfeld reference, he brought a pair of socks for me. They got the junior mints. Oh, the junior mens, who doesn't love the junior mens. It's very refreshing. Oh, it's very refreshing. real quickly, Jeff's brother, Chris, was a good friend of mine he was this entrepreneur, really good looking. Always had the best hair in any room that he was ever in. And Chris passed suddenly, almost 10 years ago now, which is just incredible. Chris was on the board of the, uh, the Indian Head Council Boy Scouts. And, uh, the whole Hoffman family. They're all Eagle Scouts. Many generations of Eagle Scouts. Their dad, it's Tim, right? Um, to Tom is my dad, and then Tim is my, my dad, my uncle. Anyways, Tom and Tim also very big, uh, scouting supporters. But, why are you here, Jeff? What's, what's the, what, why, what happened? Taking notes, you know, um, a friend of mine, Randy, who was on the podcast, Randy, yep. Uh, mentioned the podcast and, uh, I. Wanted to tune in and I'm a big fan of storytelling, so I was listening to you guys, um, laugh about your lack of knowledge of hunting. I feel the same way when I'm listening to your sports talk.'cause I love, uh, the stories behind the sports and the families that I. Um, and, and the stories of the sacrifice that goes in. I just, I couldn't tell you what stats are. I don't like follow the players, but I love the, in fact, my, my favorite, uh, movie is Miracle. Oh, and who's Oh, great pick. Yeah. And Kevin, I, I saw your 1985, uh, uh, when you won the, when you won the state tournament, and maybe it was an interview right after your, you won that, but. Much younger, and so I love Jim Craig. Yeah. I'm a, I'm a soccer goalie too, so I relate to the whole goalie references and stuff, but I, anyway, I feel like I know you guys. Very cool.'cause I've listened, I listened to a few episodes and just love the stories and the guests you've brought in. Wait a second. A few, there's a whole more than 140 now. Yeah, come on. I'm, I'm gonna catch up. I, I have to catch up. Don't catch up. That's right. That's right. But, uh, Jeff is, uh, is, uh, interested in, uh, doing a podcast. Why wouldn't you? Everybody else has got one. Mm-hmm. Right. We like to say that we're in the top 300,000 podcasts for downloads in the world. So yeah, we really feel like we're moving on up. But, uh, thank you for coming. Thank you for the, uh, the junior men's. You're welcome. Before we shut it down. We gotta find out about what's happened with Johnny Clueless. Well, to tie, to tie, Jeff, Jeff is a drummer. I, I learned that when he came in here. So we have the catch You were a drummer? I was a drummer in my, uh, my high school band. Mm-hmm. The Rummage, kins, rummage Kins played around here quite a bit. Um, but yes, I was just gonna tell you, uh, I'm very excited because we have like a whole bunch of shows gigs for us. Do we call'em gigs? We got'em show, we call em shows or gigs. We call'em shows. Okay. Yeah. Um. For the first time, we have more than one gig in a year. So our first one starts out at the dugout here in Monte on May 10th. May 10th. What time? What time would we see you on stage? Probably, uh, probably nine o'clock. You know. What is that late? I think I'm gonna make it to that. Usually that is the night of Wine Fest, and we usually spend the night in Minneapolis, but Becky leaves for some foreign land. On Sunday morning at like seven o'clock, so I said, well, come on back. We mean we Indianapolis. Something like. No. Something fancy. Oh. Oh, Charlotte. But I will, uh, I'll probably be in a tux, so that'll perfect. Give you something to talk about. Walk in. Mm-hmm. We, we, so we have that. I love it. And we have a, a, a, an outdoor festival in Hutchinson in July. Um, and, uh, and a we're gonna be playing at the red carpet. The red carpet. When is that show? We haven't been there in 23 years. I saw that. That was where we really got started as a band. It's, that was your dream to play there. I remember you had said that. I had never heard make cloud main stage. That's awesome. And, uh, so to return there, it's gonna be really exciting. A lot of old, uh, alumni are coming back and we've kind of put the word out. It's gonna be super, it's for our 40th, uh, anniversary of the red carpet. But there, but there's also, isn't like GB Leighton playing there. Yeah, it's a whole week in a band. Uh, Tim Mahoney, GB Leighton, us, and a band called Flip, a Cool hard rock band from Minneapolis or Awesome, awesome band. And what, what night are you playing? We play Saturday night. Get this. Whoa. From eight to nine 30. Oh, they're gonna shut you down. No, because this is the band after. Yeah. Flip plays. That's the perfect time for our band. It's absolutely, it's time to go to bed by 10. No, no. Everyone will come up and everyone's gonna stay in hotels and we're gonna just paint the town that night. Very nice. My kids are coming. Our whole family's coming. It's gonna be great. So tell us about the groupies. Do you think any of those gals, remember the gals from back in, at the back in the days of the red carpet? Do you think some are still hanging out at the red carpet waiting for your big return? I'm sure they'll be there. Yeah. Old, old friends. See it'll be, I, I'm, I'm sincerely, I'm thinking about getting a hotel room up there. It's, it's really meaningful.'cause that is really where we Yeah. Absolutely. Became the band. So I'm excited for that. Did you ever play at Whiskey Junction? No. We played the Cabos a lot though. You played the Cabos? Okay. Right next to that. Yeah. So is I, is Whiskey Junction, is that closed now? I think it's still going. Okay. I haven't been over there in a little while, but I. Um, Steve, a burning question I've had. Yeah, because it's one of my favorite things on the podcast is the theme music. Is that you on guitar or is that your, uh, that's my song. Yeah. That's, I love it. So the lead guitar is my guitar player, jj, he's really the producer of that track, but he and I did that during COVID, um, just, I sang in my, played the acoustic and sang in, uh, in my microphone at my house, and he did his stuff at his house and we kind of brought it together. So, yeah. That's perfect. It's got a great vibe. Hey, would it be okay to, you know how we usually. That's the beginning of the song. Yeah. And we play it at the very end of the podcast. Would it be permissible to play just a couple of, uh, a few of the lyrics just to hear what a, a fun song it is? Or do we have to clear that with, uh, well, to talk to my people? Oh, God, no. We can for sure. You can play it sometime. It's, it's just, you know, it's super fun. It's a fun song. It's a very fun song. We actually don't play that. But, but what I was also gonna say is we have rehearsed for the first time in a long time, what. Uh, couple Sun. It was the funnest time that came to my house and the band. Some people haven't been to my house before and we sat down and ran through a bunch of, we have some new songs coming. What? And some old songs we revived. So it's gonna be an all new kind vibe. Do you do any covers? We do some covers, yes. Are you gonna do Tainted Love? Yes. That's one of our, that's one of our favorites. Yes. And, uh, great song. Some Tom, some Tom Petty songs we play and uh Okay. You know, just little bits of things, but we're, we're pretty much, uh, original, but it's just a rock and roll night. It's fun. It's a good vibe. And what's that? Up, up, up, up, up thing, thing you do? That's like a drink toast that we do. Okay. That's like a traditional, you do it several times. Well, by about the fifth time it gets a little exhausting. Well, it's'cause you don't drink. That's true. I'm looking at, we sound better after every cheer. I watch people and I think they're having more fun than I can probably handle. It really is like a way to unite the group together. It's super fun. It's, it's a fun, it's ridiculous. But it started because it was a, it was a false drinking game we did in college. It was like a joke drinking game and it became this thing. I don't know how. I dunno how it know moved into that, but it's a fun shtick. It's fun. So I'm excited. So I'm clueless. You've got all kinds of shows. Could this be the comeback? Well, it's, it's something, it's definitely a, a nice revitalization and Can I ask of the band members, are there some that are like, ah, I don't want to do this? I kinda of was, you know, we, we've been up and down for so many years now, just playing a show or two. I think everyone's excited about this. That's very cool. The fact, I mean, the fact that it got everyone to get together and we actually ran through old songs and is it all the original band? Or is it like the three of us? My drummer Eric Guzzi and Stacey Chua are, yeah, we are the, the original members, jj, my, our guitar player guy who's, he's the newest member of the band, but he's been with us since 2000. Oh, wow. Um, but he's, he's like the, the premier musician of the band that guy's Amazing. So sort like, like what happened to the first We had two different guitar players before. Okay. Um, Todd, Mr. Todd Smith. He just, he, he had, we started traveling a lot and it was a little too much for him. Um, he lives in Austin, Texas. He's doing great. And Scott Miller played with us for most of the recordings we did. Okay. And he moved back to, uh, California and then moved to Portland. So he just had enough of cold Minnesota. He was a California guy. Okay. I don't wanna tour anymore, so, so they kinda went, we kind of burned him out. Yeah. But Bill Wyman on the deal, they just left the band. Yeah. But married a 12-year-old and, but no, no, no, no. None of that. But JJ is just, he plays in a lot of other groups and stuff. He's one of those guys. He's just, he's a good friend and he's like very talented guy. That's kinda like his gig, isn't it? Well, Mr. Musician, it, he plays a lot of bands. It's not his only job, but it could be. He's a producer too. He's okay. The guy's amazing. He sings, he's got his own, he's a songwriter and so I'm, I feel like lucky to have him. But do you ever have guest singers up on the stage with you? We, we invite people up all the time just to do little things, mostly to embarrass them and make them, you know, act silly. Yes, that's a good idea. Um, it's fun. Kg. Johnny, maybe we can get you to come out to one of the, uh, the Johnny Lewis coming programs got five. They got five gigs. Let's make it happen. Yeah, we're gonna make it to a gig. Yeah. I gotta the red leather at some point. Yeah. They're not leather and I might not wear'em well. John said they were, and I believe him, like the guy on the cover of, uh, lover Boy. Lover Boy. Yeah. Oh yeah. Mike Reno. We always talk about him. Mike Reno. That's right. Canadian. Alright. That's right. Classic. Look at that. He's pulling out the Canadian Mr. Wikipedia over there. We call him Jeff Wikipedia. Well, they, the tariffs, you know, you can't, uh, that's true. You can't listen to Loverboy without Oh boy. Thinking of the tariffs. That's right. Yeah. Do we have to pay extra if we download those signs? The tariff Guess I. SA notification Adams. Well, we don't talk politics. Thanks for taking us down that road. We've given you more than you deserve. 39 minutes and off we go.
