The Kindness Chronicles
We live in a world dominated by stories of divisiveness. The Kindness Chronicles hopes to give the world a dose of the "Minnesota Nice" it desperately needs. Hosted by Fox Sports North's Kevin Gorg, Steve Brown of Johnny Clueless fame and John Schwietz (a guy you've never heard of), the Kindness Chronicles delivers stories of kindness through the lens of Minnesotans who share their personal backstories and celebrate those who influenced them to become the people they are today.

JohnThat's right. We're number two, no doubt about it. Welcome to The Kindness Chronicles, where here we are once again, hoping to inject the world with a dose of the Minnesota kindness that it desperately needs. It is midsummer. The 4th of July has come and gone. America 250, what a beautiful experience that was. It was real hot
SteveYep.
JohnAnd with the heat comes some kindness opportunities. Yeah.
SteveYeah
JohnAnd I think that I- it would be fun. ...We have, uh, Steve Brown. Hi, Steve. Hi. Uh, Kevin Gorg is up in Brainerd. He's got a, uh, week up there with, uh, with his special friend and his
SteveKevin Gorg exist anymore?
Johnany existence- Well, we'll talk about that later. He's,
Stevewe'd love to see him again We'd love to see
Johnto see him. yeah, We'd love to see him. We're-
SteveHe's on some big assignments
Johnon a lot. Yeah. He's gonna be delivering big for us ...sometime in the future. Jeff, hi. How are you, Jeff Hoffman? How
Jeffguys? Good to be back
Steveare you guys? Okay, and, uh, we
Johnwe are gonna be checking in with our, uh, offsite correspondent. Yeah. He's been out, uh, scouring the Twin Cities
MichaelAll over
JohnMr. Dempsey. Welcome.
MichaelHey, welcome. Welcome to me? Thank you. I'm, I'm so happy to be back. Welcome to me.
Steveto me. Um,
Johnis gonna be one of those kinda clown car... We don't have any special guests.
SteveNo, just, just our contributing,
Johnhe's special in a different way He's special in quotation marks. A different kind of special. But, um, I just wanna, um, I was in, uh, New Buffalo, Michigan last week.
JeffIt's sort of like New England, but
JohnBut not. But, but different. And I learned why it's called New Buffalo. There was a guy by the name of, uh, Major Whittaker who, uh, took his, uh, took a boat from, uh, Buffalo, New York- through the Great Lakes, ended up, uh, spending the winter in New Buffalo. At the time, it wasn't called that, but he decided, "Let's call this New Buffalo," and he never left. Yeah. Uh, and there's, Whittaker is everywhere. Whittaker Woods Golf Course. Um, but it's sort of like where the glitterati from Chicago
SteveOh.
JohnMet Jason Sudeikis, uh, Rahm Emanuel was there. Um- Yeah. Yeah, there was all kinds of very, uh, a bunch of, uh, Chris Chelios, who plays for the Blackhawks. Yeah. He's got a place there. You know who that, You know who that is. ...Of course you do, Steve.
Stevegot the stick and everything
MichaelYeah. A
Johnthat's, most hockey players have that. a whole bunch of Chicago Bears, these big jacked guys. You can tell that- You know, they didn't fit in with the rest of us- little jacked guys. Um, but no, I, I, I was thinking, wouldn't it be fun if we just did a little talk about the role that summer can play on kindness or lack thereof?
SteveThat's a great idea You know?
JohnYou know? Yeah.
SteveWell, yeah, it, it's it's deep summer and, uh, temperatures, temperatures get hot. and people get a little... We're, we're kinda done being like holiday time, right? Because now we're in
Johnterm hot around the collar comes
SteveIt's hotter
JeffThat's Right. There's a lot of sayings like
MichaelYeah, There's a pressure cooker to the heat. There's no, ...no, no, no doubt about it. And what's interesting about that is typically we think, well, it- the winter and snowstorms and the cold that, that that really gets, you know, the, the crankiness amped up. But
SteveYeah. 'Cause we're stuck in the house and, yeah
Michaelin the house cause we're stuck in the house, and we don't know how to behave out in public. But I would suggest that summer heat, that's just as drastic on really testing- Yeah how we sort of engage out in the wild.
Steveyeah, I have another thought that involves weather. Yeah. I definitely wanna talk about it. But before we do that-
Johndo you want to talk
Stevewhat do you wanna talk about? Well, we wanna, we wanna get a formal check-in with
MichaelOh, wow
Stevehaven't had one of these, one of these segments in quite a while. Yeah. We haven't seen you for a couple months
Michaelnow. Yeah. That's right. It's been A couple.
SteveYeah. That's right. A couple. But what I wanna tell you is, uh, my friend Steven- Yeah has helped put together a, a, some optional, uh-
JeffIntro
SteveIntro themes intro themes for you.
MichaelOh, God. Oh,
Stevewrites the he does the theme music
JohnI know, but we have a theme for-
Jeffwe we do. We want people to feel welcome and special when they come here.
Johnthat's nice
Michaelmean, do you listen to the, you, I mean, do you listen to the radio show and they have a reoccurring guest? Right. And they usually play a little something. Well, I mean, you know, once in a while, let's hear it
Steveso let's listen to, uh- Version one
JeffVersion one
Steveyeah, just listen to version one and you guys decide if we, if this fits
JeffTell it, Tell us what you think. Listen closely to the lyrics. Here we go
Johnstory?
Steveit's
MichaelOh, wow
Johnhair band vibe
MichaelYeah
JohnAnd, uh, uh,
JeffWhat do you think?
JohnIs that how he did that
MichaelThat's really good
SteveThat's how He, did that. That was very good he pre- did it in his apartment and, uh-
JohnThat was really good. Yeah. He did it in his apartment. He's putting people out of business. That is... AI is gonna crush people. That's really clever. That's,
Stevewas- It's a little more of a... It's very
JohnGood luck. I bet you number two... Yeah, that was
Steve''80s hard
Jeffwe thought of you
Michaelcranking,
Johncranking,
Stevecranking out Checkin' In with Dempsey
Jeffweren't
Michaelit.
Johnconcept ...for a guy who might be struggling in that
Michaeldon't really have a lot of hair, but that's good. Okay, I love it. What's option two. I don't know if that can be topped
Jeffgive that shit. Now here we go
SoundshowIs that anyone else that you wanna see? It's not you, or me, checking in with Dempsey. Checking in with Dempsey.
JohnYeah. one's pleasant. I like the first one
Michaeluh, uh, there's the irony of the first one. the second one. probably fits ...the character a lot better, but the irony of the first one. All right. Yeah.
Stevethe irony of the first one. All right. Yeah, yeah. I, I'm, I like, I like either one. I think the number one is a little more, you know, catchy. Yeah. A little more, you know, wakes you up a little bit. It
JeffI like it. It's peppy. Mm-hmm
JohnSo
Stevebased on that- yeah yeah, let's, let's get a, ...let's get a check it in
Michaelit. Let's
SteveLet's do it. Tell us what's been going
Michaelno, let's hit number one
SteveNo, let's hit number one again. All right, one more time.
Michaelreal. Let's do it
Steveit? again.
Jeffhere. Whoa.
Stevego...
MichaelOh yeah, that's good
SteveI think applause needs to be done.
JohnJackin' in with Dem Say
MichaelYeah!
JeffThere you go
MichaelI love it. I love it. Well, thank you for checking in with Dempsey. Here is the deal. It's been a couple of
Johna song.
MichaelYou do. Well, I
JeffYou have one, Dr. Diction.
MichaelOh, Dr. Diction,
JohnOh, yeah
MichaelI've been out for a couple of months. I'll highlight a couple of stops along the way. I was in Philadelphia not too long ago.
Johncity of brotherly
JeffThat is.
Michaela lot of love there. And, uh, no, uh, well, I mean, anybody that's seen Rocky, of course, they know. And you gotta go see the statue when you're there. the steps? Oh, yeah. I mean, I walked them. Yeah. I mean, I didn't, I didn't, I didn't run them. I did run down to them, but I wasn't gonna that... I was tired, so I didn't go up this. And the- and it's, um, it's surprisingly small, that statue. Oh, really? Yeah. Yeah. When, when, you know, in and amongst, you know, the, the building, it's ...kinda small. But, um-
Johnis only like 5'6", right? I mean, he's kind of a shorter guy
Michaelhe's not,
SteveAnd it's not a historical person, it's just from a movie,
Michaelsitting there. And it's funny because you go down that road and there's lots of monuments that are historical- Yeah along the way, and then you have, uh, a- a, Hollywood. Uh, but I had a... It was fun. I mean, Philadelphia was good. I, I had my first... And I've been to Philadelphia several times. I got the recommendation of where to go get a- Cheesesteak. Yes.
Johnabout that For a- while
Stevefor a while.
Michaeltalk about that ...for a while Cheesesteak. It was, uh... I went to, went to Chester's. Okay. And it was right downtown, and, um, it was bigger than I needed.
Johnor or
SteveIt's bigger than you need
MichaelProvolone or Cheese Whiz? It was Bigger than you need No, it was, uh, it was, uh, pro- provolone. I got... I didn't get American. I didn't get
Johnthey have Cheez Whiz and provolone.
Stevething I thought,
MichaelYeah, It is. You can, you, you can, you know, the, uh... I guess it's
JohnDempsy has a more sophisticated
Michaeltasty. Yeah. It was, uh, it was delicious. But the key, I guess, is the bun, right? It's, it's, it's, it's not, it's not... It's like no other bun. That it has a sort of crusty outside. There's, uh, like a cornmeal kinda deal. Oh. It's a, it's... The bun is key, but don't mistake it for the Italian beef, which is still, uh, Chicago's own Italian beef, which, which I prefer. So Philadelphia's great. Lots of kindness. I got in and out of there. But, um, then a few weeks later,
JohnCan I just- Yeah before we move on, Isn't it ironic- Yeah that, like, Eagles fans are apparently the least- brotherly love people on the planet? Sure. And so,
JeffThey were throwing full beer cans down on Minnesotans.
Johnthey threw b- beer cans ...at Santa Claus. They
MichaelThe only thing I'll say about that is th- they did, but they owned it. You know what I mean? They didn't run from it. They, they haven't, they haven't, run from it. They're... Uh, wasn't the old Veteran's Stadium the only stadium with an actual jail in it?
SteveThey're hoolig- they're
Johnin the basement,
MichaelThere was an actual
SteveAmerican hooligans, yeah. And so-
MichaelAnd so, uh, but that's not kind. I will tell you, my kindness was tested. Uh, I've been listening to all of the podcasts, keeping up, and, um, I had a really rough week because, um, uh, two weeks ago... Well, my, my, my lovely wife and I were planning to go to Teddy Roosevelt National Park ...in Western North Dakota. Beautiful area. There were a few things going on. There's a little town called Medora. and they put on this musical. It's sort of a campy little Western musical, and right next to where they put this on, they were opening the presidential library, right? So we were all excited, and we bought these tickets in February. A week before we were going, we're gonna see this, we get an email.
JohnSorry, folks. Park's closed. Trump.
Michaelbe in town. We have to lock her down. You can't go. And we're the... Are you serious right now? We went anyway. We went anyway. It was all closed down, and we sort of snuck around, and we got to see some things. But that tested me. Now-
Johnthere curse words?
Michaelthere curse words? Well, there were some curse words. Okay. But I thought to myself, That's okay," because in two days, after the notification, so I left, in two days, I'm gonna go-
SteveSorry folks, bar's closed
Michaelto the new Shakopee Amphitheatre- Oh. and I'm gonna see Dave Matthews. Oh, now that's- So two days later- I said, I said to myself, Okay, I can't go to this library that's not really a library because the president's gonna be there. I'm disappointed, but in two
JohnYeah.
MichaelI'm gonna, I'm gonna go to Shakopee." Amphitheatre. Yeah. that's it. So-
Johnit. So- It's like rain
Michaelwe, we
Johnon Dave Matthews Day
Michaelbad, and we drove down. There was an accident. It took us, like, two and a half hours, and we got there. But, but I'm telling you, it
JohnAnd it g- it got canceled, right?
MichaelWell, we got to, to Mystic Lake. We're gonna take the shuttle over. Everyone's waiting in line. It's raining, and about a half hour in, uh, the concert's been postponed-
JohnOh, no So
MichaelSo I'm telling
Johnyou- You got Lionel
MichaelYou got it the next
JohnYou got it the next day. Yes
Michaelnext day, you went to Lionel Richie. He has a, you know, minor, uh, uh, health issue. You wore your hello T-shirt. But I, I was tested. Dempsey out on the road has been tested, And I've come out, ...I've come out the other side. All right. I've come out the other
JeffYou were, you, you, remained calm? I remained calm?
Michaeldidn't hurt anybody. You remained
JeffAnd you, you didn't punch the moo- moose's
Johnmoose and the nose. Do you have this queued up, Jeff?
MichaelYeah
Stevejust
Jeffhave the still images
Stevedo it for you.
Jeffand so we could
Stevefolks, park's closed. Moose should have told you
JeffBut what I thought was interesting in this is they didn't even have the c-- they didn't have a courtesy of, of an actual human until the ne- the second layer so it's like they, he, they, they said, You know what? It's gonna be fine," and the wife was trying to stop him, and then, you know, John Candy popped in. But it's like, did they have that for you? Like layer one was a, like a little sign and an electronic message, and then layer two of security was a person?
MichaelThere, was multiple layers, but I'll tell you, that's- that's when your kindness is tested, right? When you're planning-
Stevelong drive, dude
Michaelit's a long drive to western North Dakota. I, I... And the shout-out to North Dakota, though. I'll tell you, at, uh, uh, whether it was a McDonald's for a Diet Coke or or the hotel we stayed in or the small town of Medora, I- everybody was so kind, and it was so hot. And, but everybody was, uh, k- kind and
JohnThey're just happy to see humans-
MichaelI guess so. But, uh, uh, hey, sidebar on, uh, western North Dakota, where they're celebrating Theodore Roosevelt. This is the kind of stuff that gets me irritated, though. He was only there for 18 months, for crying out loud. I mean, he didn't live there. I
Jeffbut he, he lived in an intense life there. He, the, the, the,
Michaeltwo years. His mother and his wife pass on the same day, ...and he goes there. You know what he went there To do?
JeffTo live a strenuous
MichaelNo, he went there to
Jeffwhat he said. That's a quote
Michaelwent there to start a beef- a cattle company. That's why he went there. Yeah. I mean- That's a
JohnAbsolutely
SteveIt's a historical
Jeffhe hunted a lot too, though.
Michaelchecking in.
JeffHe is, a, he is, he is on the Mou- he is one of the people on the Mount Rushmore, so he must've done something
SteveWait, Michael. Yeah. that's all you have for checking in? Well,
MichaelI just wanted to... I don't wanna maximize the, co- Oh,
Stevecan we hear about the how the, uh, the, f- the FIET's been going? Oh. But
Jeffwe do that, since I'm referencing, and we'll, we'll come back to this, but it sounds like you, you remained this version of Clark Griswold. You didn't go to this version, and you could have, but, but you stayed, you stayed calm like this
JohnYeah. Having a drink
MichaelOh,
SteveThat's right. For those of you listening- You stayed, you stayed calm like this one Having a drink with, uh, with Rusty,
Michaelhaving a beer with
Stevetalking about how far your car flew. and then the other one is, uh, going off the rails and, uh, zippity-doo-dah out your, uh...
JeffThat's right. We're, we're on a quest for fun when the ki- when everybody else is backing out.
MichaelIt's not a quest for fun yeah. What a quest. Th- th- That's right. that's right. Uh, the, uh, the school year wrapped up great the, the, beginning of June. Uh, wonderful experience spending, uh, time with grade school kids, doing gym classy stuff. Um, uh, it's just a, a, a, it's a different version of the lunchroom story that I love, right? 'Cause there's always the kids who are really athletic ...and, um, ...just tear it
JohnYeah, that was
MichaelYeah, that's me, too, presidential physical fitness work. But then there's all those kids that aren't naturally coordinated, ...and, uh, ...to get them all... Yeah, that was Steve. Hey, listen, he couldn't get his, ...he couldn't get his he couldn't get his Elvis,
JohnI know.
Michaelright? So, but, um, yeah.
Johnthe Elvis thing?
SteveNo.
Jeffhad a dancer's body, so he was
Johnyou have an outfit? Did you have Elvis did. Oh, he
Stevethe photos. My mom
JohnI was, I just wanted to hear about it
SteveI did glue my sideburns on ...with spirit gum. Oh, spirit
JeffThat's so
Johnspirit Gum?
Steveit was- so it was true.
Michaelis good. Yeah, yeah. So, uh, the gym class was great to, to, to see all of these different kids and get them engaged and get them hyped up and get them, you know, just sort of celebrating and, you know, whatever sort of physical sort of PR accomplishments they could have. And, uh, I loved it. And you know, it was funny, towards the end of the school year, I was talking to the gym teacher and she's like, "Yeah, the principal's looking for a, a part-time P.E. teacher next fall." Uh- ...a- and, and, and I said, "Well, you need a, you need a license, right?" No, you don't, you don't need a license." And I'm like, "Are you serious right now?" She's like, "No, you, you don't need a..." And then she looked at me and she's like, are you are you seriously interested?" And I, I said, I,
JeffWe can make this happen if you need
SteveYeah.
MichaelWell, what she didn't know was m- my wife had actually been on the hiring board for the principal at that school 20 years ago.
SteveOh. So,
Michaelso it wouldn't have been really tough to sort of get it, but I, I don't, I couldn't be. Uh, teachers, are you serious? You, last, last week you had the Forest Lake,
JeffWeren't they awesome?
MichaelThey were a- they were
JeffKate and Ka- or Katie and Jake, yeah
Michaeland tuba Jake. Uh, teachers, that is a profession, uh, like nurses, we've talked about it. Yeah. These people are angels. I mean, what they, ...what they have to endure and the impact they have on kids is unbelievable. I don't know if I have the stomach. I mean, it's a
JohnOh, you got a
Jeffgot the stomach, but
MichaelYou've got the stomach. Oh, yeah. Well, I mean, not, not that kind though. Not that
JeffWe're just having a Philly cheesesteak. No.
JohnThat's one of those American idioms
MichaelOh. that's what it is. Thank you
JohnOh. that's... Thank you. Yeah
SteveNot that kind. of- Oh not that kind. Is that a figure of speech? No. Yeah. That's one of those American idioms. Oh, that's what it is. What'd you call me? Well, uh, I, I appreciate this, uh, Checking In with Dempsey. And what, how that originated was you came on to kinda tell us how we're doing. yeah. Um, it sounds like You've been listening. I have. You've been catching in. You've been, you've been catching up a little bit. Um, I will just say, kind of as a Checking in, I'm incredibly proud of our YouTube streams. Um, Jeff has done an incredible job putting those together. people are subscribing. people are watching. people are sharing. It's fantastic. Not that we've signed up to do a TV show, but it ends up being something people like to get on YouTube, so check it out on YouTube 'cause it's
JeffWell, it opens up um, another dimension if we need to show something or refer to an image. It gives people an option to go,
MichaelYeah, but you, you guys have, uh, uh, captured some amazing guests. The, um, uh, the folks with the Special Olympics. I, I, didn't tell you This
SteveKelly and
JeffYeah,
Michaelwe went, we, we drove to western North Dakota. I made my wife listen to the last four episodes.
Johnwhat do you mean made?
MichaelYeah, I said, "Listen, honey, I, I'm gonna be
Steveon- I gotta catch up,
MichaelYou gotta catch up. You gotta listen." And, Uh, I'm... Uh, she was actually, she enjoyed that. She had commentary on all of you fools.
Johnenjoyed that? You know, you're using words here that are concerning to
SteveI don't make my wife sit and listen to
Johnwife listen. She was actually
MichaelYeah, entertained. Yeah.
SteveLet's talk about getting cool. Let's talk about cooling down ...because it is hot, It is summer, and it's, it's when people get irritated.
Johnkeep your thermostat at? Just curious, in the
SteveI think, uh, I think, 70. I think. Me too. Yeah. Can
JohnCan I, um, ...I know that, that we want this to be timely, but I do have a, a comment It's a comment about the World
Jeffabout the World Cup.
MichaelYeah
JohnI have found the World Cup to be far more interesting than I ever imagined it would be. And part of it has to do with the, the joy that people seem to have being in the United States of America. The, the fascination that they have for things like Buc-ee's, and ranch dressing, and the Waffle House, and there's so many great memes. There's this, uh... Have you guys seen the Japanese guy who says that he doesn't speak English
Jeffis it that one?
Johnthe guy!" that guy just gives me such joy.
MichaelYeah
Stevethink he's... You sent that Yeah. No, but I know what you're seeing. You, you showed us that. It's funny
Johnuh, soccer players, the way that they, like, clean up after themselves. We may have talked about this
SteveNot the players, but the fans. No, but the- Oh, the players too, yeah ...the
Johnrooms, like they- Oh, sure. It's so cool. Yeah. Yeah. But the love that they have of big food, like, they now understand why there's so much obesity in the United States. Oh, yeah
MichaelOh, yeah
JohnI mean, when we were in Europe, it's like, where are all the fat people?
Steve'Cause they're all walking They're all walking. Right,
Johnall walking. They're all walking. Right, right.
MichaelSome of that has to do with, uh, most of their
Johnfood
Michaelis not processed, right? And, and they, they, they have to grow it ...and eat it, and you go to the market and you buy the stuff, and you know, it's not got shelf life and all of that. Let me tell you what raises the heat for me.
Steveis it?
Michaelgonna tell you to raise it. And maybe, I... You guys need to... Yeah, I... Let, let me tell You something. You wanna flip a switch? What you gotta do is you come into a store like Target, and you decide you're gonna call somebody, and you're gonna put that on speaker. And then you're gonna walk around talking into your phone while somebody... Oh, my God. Oh. Oh, well, is that the harsh of... Like, they're having a full-blown conversation about what's for dinner in two weeks while you're sort of walking through ...the clothing section. I- if you wanna have a conversation with someone, have it, but I don't wanna hear it. I don't wanna hear it.
SteveAll right. Okay. Hold on, hold on
Michaelme off. Does
SteveSee, you're already... He's already heated up. let's let's, let's hold on a second. John's talked about that in the past. He's been guilty of that. Yeah. And it's not really heat-related, but it's, it's, it's maybe part of the- Yeah environment right now. When you go to Target to get cool, you see that. Yeah, yeah. But okay, listen up. We're officially into the heart of summer. The Fourth of July has come and gone. The novelty has worn off. Now we're standing in line at Target- Yeah or wherever, sitting in rural construction, waiting behind somebody ordering 14 custom coffees, trying to keep kids entertained. And someone, uh... And somehow everybody feels just a little warmer, and not just because of the weather. Today, we're asking a simple question. How do we keep cool, uh, how do we keep a cool head- Yeah and a kind heart, and leave a little room for everyone else? How do we do it? This is what we're gonna explore a little bit today. So it's kind of gripes. We're gonna go through ...some gripes. We're gonna go through, um, some ways and to think about it. We all become crab asses when w- when it's hot and, uh, what I was gonna say earlier is here's another part of it that connects with weather, at least locally ...in, in Midwest. We only have a certain amount of summer days. So we cherish ...and we invest in those days- Right and our weekends, our cabins, our whatever we're gonna do, or just getting the yard done or whatever. So when someone's impeding on your timing- Yeah you... it's all starts to crunch together. 'Cause I I feel... As I get older, I feel like I'm still appreciating just wearing a shirt outside. Yeah. Like, no jacket. Like, this is so great. We are in a time, uh, a time crunch here That's true
Michaelinteresting. That's interesting you mention that. So in essence, what you're saying is we feel m- not, and, and not only is it the heat, but b- based on the limited time we have- Yes we feel so much pressure- Pressure
Steveto have fun ...and get out to the cabin
JeffGood observation. Yeah, that is a good
Michael"I gotta get home ...because I got, uh, six kid things that I gotta get done," or, "My kids gotta go to camp," or- That's right ..."If I don't get three trips to the cabin in, why did I buy that cabin? Yeah.
Steveit can become about money.
JohnWell, I'm hot all the time. What... E- no, just through winter, like I'm always sweaty, so I'm always kinda crabby about how I feel
SteveWell, okay. So let's ask, let's ask you this, John. Yeah. what what makes you cranky? Aside from sweatiness.
JohnWhat makes me
SteveYeah, like, like, Well, what is it about heat- Well- Hold on. What is it about heat that makes you cranky? we'll we'll save another, whatever you're gonna say before. What about heat makes you cranky in the summertime? We're talking summer right now
JohnReally, I, I don't mind the heat of the summer because I rarely outside. I-
Stevecut your grass, you do all kind- you do mulch
Johnstory? I gotta cut grass later on today. My yard looks terrible cause I've been gone for a week. I really don't spend a lot of time outside. I am, as many times you've heard, I'm an avid indoorsman. I don't like when the house gets above 72 degrees. That's what makes me cranky. But I, I would say that I don't like golfing in the heat. Um, you know, that physical activity, although I take a cart, um, while my playing mates all walk because... Oh, good for them. Um,
SteveYou just
Johntalking to you, Mr. Burns. Mr. Burns is a
JeffWhat if you had to walk? if you were for... And, and I remember you even said, uh, in, in Italy, you, you, you set things up properly so that you would be happy because there wouldn't be a lot of walking
Johnusually the walking was associated with a meal at the end of the walk.
JeffRight. So there's a reward. there's a reward
Johnwas a reward, And it was usually a very good reward. But here's the worst part. You had to walk back on a full stomach. Ah. Not good. And,
Jeffthat's I think where you're going. What, what, what triggers in your mind that can make you blow up like Michael Douglas here in Falling Down, right? And, and does the heat contribute to that?
JohnI see what you're
Steveheat is very much
JohnI misunderstood the question
Stevefor instance, uh, you know, you get in your car and your steering wheel's boiling hot, your seat's boiling hot, it's 115 degrees in your car. So now everyone gets in like, "Ah." You gotta wait for a minute or turn the air on right away or open the windows, whatever. That's, that's
JeffAre there things that trigger anger in you that we, if we're mindful of it, we can hopefully stave it off and be kind?
JohnI don't care for when people don't understand my sarcastic jokes. That is very triggering for me. Like, people that are super sensitive about things that really are meant to be funny, um, have a candy bar. Oh, see, now that is an assault. I was just throwing... This was a very... Uh, uh, that wa- that could be a weapon. That could be a we- no. I, uh, y- you know, I get upset like
Jeff...an episode back you said pe- some people that don't get me. You said that once- and it
Stevehere's
Johnwhat... I'll give you one. Like, I am very generous with letting people in in the traffic. If I don't get a wave for the traffic- ...it very, very irritating to me. Um, you know, ...where's my wave? All I want is a wave. But, and when I get a wave, ...it really brings me up. Uh, but it is, that is a Seinfeld episode. I didn't even think of
SteveWhere's that wave?
Johnwhy-
SteveWhere's my wave? No, that, I I think everybody appreciates that. why why won't you... H- how hard is that just to go, "Thank you"?
Johnthank you.
Stevedo it all the time. I always give people
Johnthe other thing that I, I think that people need to do more often. I am a distracted driver sometimes, okay? And I almost caused a car accident today, and the person laid on the horn and honked at me, and I gave him the one hand on the chest, one hand up in the air, and the like, "I am sorry" nod. Like, that's on me.
MichaelNo hand on the wheel
Johnthe response that I got... That's a problem, too. I didn't have a single hand on the
Michaela hand on ...the
Jeffsteered with his thighs at
Johnfrom the guy was very... It made my day, 'cause he's like, "Okay, I appreciate
JeffThat's
Steveyeah. I'm so sorry.
Johnso sorry. I'm so sorry, And, and it's usually my fault. Yeah.
JeffYeah.
JohnAnd I really need to be, do a
Jeffvery big of you to do That
Johnyou do that Yeah. Thank you. So, again- I like talking about-
Steveback to heat ...and what makes people cranky. Um, the car, um, mosquitoes have declared war. Mosquitoes kicked in when it gets muggy ...and hot. Uh, every road is under construction. and I... It's kinda shifted a little bit. It, it, the spring was, I think, worse, but I
JohnI know. Here's one. We're driving from Michigan through Indiana to Illinois, okay? The left lane was shut down for no apparent reason. They had the orange, like, barrels up for 20 miles. and the traffic was down to a crawl. They had a wide open lane there that could have helped. It's like, if you're not gonna be out there working, take the cones down and let us use that lane f- That irritates me, And when it's real hot
SteveThat irritates me. And when it's real time- You're managing construction on the road site, you're managing... You think their plan is bad? I... yes.
Johnyes. And I think it's against me.
SteveAnd I think it's against me.
MichaelIt's completely against it. And no amount of hand on the chest ...and waving is gonna change it, And that's,
SteveThey probably put them out there a day before and they're gonna start the next
JeffWould it be safe to say that an internal dialogue is happening with you when you're
Johnare words. There are words- ...that we don't use on this podcast
Steveso how do you, like, I guess we're just gonna stay with John and his traffic issues. But Michael, you tell me too, like, when, when things get crazy and heated, maybe Jeff, you can chime in here too, but what do you do to keep your internal thermostat, we'll call that your thermostat, what makes you freak out- ...and get cranky. What, what do you do? What are the tools? What do you go to? What Without even maybe-
JohnI start to snack
Stevestart to snack. you start to
JohnYeah
Michaeldo you, what do you, At least when you're on a road... Let's go to food real quick. You're road tripping. Is it corn nuts? Jerky?
JohnI'm a big jerky. I'm a big jerky guy. Yeah, I love jerky.
MichaelOh, so you start with the
Johnin your teeth and then Yeah teriyaki or whatever. No, I'm a big fan of, uh, what's it called? Old Trapper. Oh,
MichaelYeah, That's refreshing. Yeah,
Johnthe traditional. It's so good.
SteveYeah. Cub Foods has it.
JohnYeah. Love Foods has this.
Michaelso you grab a couple of, uh, chunks of Old Trapper, And then- you... then the heat comes, then the heat comes down a little
Johnit takes me back to, uh, what's really important
MichaelIt takes me back to, uh Yeah. The Old Trapper jerky and
JohnOld
MichaelD- ...and some Diet Coke. And a Diet Coke. Does
Steveand a Diet Coke. That might be, get you back to your comfort zone. What do you do? yeah. What's your thermostat?
MichaelI, I, Well, so I try to do preventative medicine because what this is all about is you're jacking with my time, right? So the road construction. And so when it's hot, I feel like people are really rushing. There's no leisurely drive, especially around the city. It's like, I gotta get to the T-ball game. I gotta get to the picnic. I gotta get to the lake. I gotta get to the fireworks." Time's a-wasting. Time's
SteveTimes are wasting, Summertime's leaving us.
Michaelso my preventative medicine is, um, I'm gonna leave early. Yeah. Like, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go earlier. And so one thing that really sets me off, and I was just having this conversation yesterday with my, my, my daughter and my wife. I said, "You know what really pisses me off, ladies? Is when I say, 'Okay, on Thursday we're going to Chicago,' or something. We're leaving at 8:00 AM. "Are we, are we clear on that? 8:00 AM.' And they're all like, "Yeah, 8:00 AM.' And then like six hours later I say, 'You guys, what time are we leaving on Thur- 8:00 AM.' And then the next day I say- "Just so we're clear, it's 8:00 AM, right,
SteveThe ASA Wow Just so we're
MichaelI just gotta...'" And then... Okay, but then, Thursday rolls around, who's the only one standing at the door at 8:00 AM? You wanna, you wanna get
SteveYou actually paint, You're, you're, you're causing yourself that though
Michaelwhat are, what are you talking about? I'm trying to lay the groundwork
Johnwhat I would suggest
Michaelcould say to me, "Hey, Dad, how about 8:15?" You named 8:15, 8:15 it is. I don't care.
JohnSo here's what you wanna do, Michael. It's
Stevetorturing yourself,
Johnvery
MichaelIt works itself. Yeah. Yeah. It's very simple. Yeah, what is it?
JohnIf you wanna leave at 8:00, you tell people we're leaving at 7:00. Manage your own expectations. Trust me. I mean, that's just, ...it's a very simple
MichaelOh, You gotta just lie? You gotta lie?
Johnwhat you wanna do is you want to manage your own expectations about the people that are around you. So my wife, ...let's talk about her for a
Michaelmy wife, let's talk about her first. Yeah, let's go
JohnSo I like to get to the airport really early.
MichaelWell, you gotta get the McGriddle. I get it. It's called the McBird.
JohnIt's called a McGorgan, by the way, BTW. I know where both of the McDonald's are in the, uh, in the airport. But anyway, um,
MichaelYou wanna get there
JohnBecky is one of those people that likes to be the person that gets onto the plane just as the door is closing behind her. I mean, that is not good for a healthy marriage right there.
SteveI
JohnI like to- When I travel alone, I get there two and a half hours early. I can walk casually, leisurely. I leave even earlier just in case the traffic is gonna be bad, and I might get there three hours early. But you know what I do? I go, I sit down, go get myself a McGorgan. Everything is fine.
MichaelRead a little. Stress of that.
Johnof that, Ugh.
MichaelUgh. Yeah. Me too. I'm the same as you
SteveI I'm as well. man. I, I don't know if it's just t- it's a little type A, but my wife is just like your wife, uh, in that she's She she has no, she thinks it's wasting her time to be early. it's like it's wasting my time. Yeah. So we've been, we've been, oftentimes like, I'm like, "We gotta get to the gate." We've sat down and had a Caribou coffee. Like, "We gotta, we gotta, get going.
Johnyou ever wanna say- "Why is your time so valuable?
Stevelike, ..."It's fine." All of a sudden, as we're walking, they start saying our names on the
MichaelOh, no. No,
Johnbeen in that position?
SteveOh, no. Oh, no. You've been in that position? And, and what it is is, what it is is it's actually torturing me. Oh. She doesn't realize that she's torturing me. Right.
JohnWhat it is, what it is is it's actually torturing me. Oh. She doesn't realize that she's torturing me. Yeah. we need to have her in, and we're we're gonna talk about
Steveshe loves to just
JohnUnless she
Steveuh, fairly late.
JohnI'm gonna call her Jenny and see how that goes
Michaelno, your, your, your wife and my wife are the same. They, they, they're the... We, we go to mass, uh, we're Saturday night mass people. We bring the median age down to about 65, right? We're always late. We're always late. We walk in, That priest, who by the way is marrying my daughter, is eyeballing me every time I walk in there. Every time, eyeball, a- all, just ...eyeballing me. Just eyeballing me. Well, I'm
JohnIf we're gonna be late to church, I'm not going. I'm
Stevegoing. You're not going. I don't like to be late ...to stuff either. I
Johndon't. You know what? You know
Stevelike to call attention. We're
Johngreat guys.
Steveguys. I don't, I don't know if that's what it is. Yeah. I think we're, uh,
Johnyou get to church on time?
MichaelYeah. Well
JohnYeah. Uh, listen to him. He's so thoughtful ...and sweet, isn't he?
SteveThat is so thoughtful of you, Stephanie I know. Jeff, how do you do it? How do you manage when the thermostat gets a little hot? What do you
JeffI, I, when it comes to our car, I turn my car into a university on wheels and try and learn something productive while I'm driving. I, I've always liked doing that.
JohnWhat a surprise. Anyone surprised?
Michaeljerky. Yeah.
JeffAnd I've found that that calms my internal dialogue down, and I do, uh, not that we need to shift to movies, but that's why that Pixar Inside Out means so much to me because that's about internal dialogue, and it speaks to me in that I've found and I've just kinda set, stood outside myself when I'm angry. It's like, "What's going on here?" And I'm usually just hyping myself up or I'm seeing negative things, and I'm like, "Why is that?" And, and, uh, and sometimes it might take weeks or months to calm that down because there's something there that's bothering me, and that's where I do think faith comes into play and d- having a morning routine and church, all that stuff, because it might be, there might be a root cause that needs to really get dealt with.
SteveOr actually, a- a- as like a, a a meditative thought is you're, you're calming the monkey mind. That you're so stressed and you're
JohnWell,
Steveout- Yeah ...you take a breath, you take some deep breaths. You really realize, "What, why am I mad? What am I?" And then you go, "Oh, I'm mad. Why am I mad?"
Johnthis inside voice thing. You, you mentioned the, the movie Inside Out. Um, do you guys participate in in internal voice? My problem is, is my internal voice be- gets verbalized and it gets me in trouble. So, like I shouldn't have said the things I said earlier that we
Jeffand why did you, t- why, ...why why did you say that story to yourself with that that lane was shut down and they're not working on it? Maybe there was another reason that you couldn't drive in it, but you created and constructed a story that angered you, and you don't really know the full story.
SteveAnd well, and, and being angry at like-
JohnI need help,
Steveand ...being, being angry at the construction site is the same as being angry that it's raining. You can't do anything about it, so you have to adjust your thought and go, "I can't change that. Here's what it is." The universe doesn't- Probably.
JeffSo I'm showing some of the voices on Inside Out here, and on the left I believe that's sadness uh, Disgust is on the right. She's green. Um, it's interesting, the gal in the, the, the, the middle is red. I think she's Anger. This, this is actually a better... But isn't it interesting they used red for anger, and you're talking about heat and hot and temperature? So it's like hot under the collar or he's hot-tempered, right? He's a hothead
MichaelI wanna ask Jeff this question though, because it was a really thoughtful response about you going, "Okay, why am I feeling this way? Why am I feeling anxious?" Do you... 'Cause now I'm super curious. I-i- does that happen more often in the heat of the summer or in the cold of the winter? Uh,
JeffThe cold of the winter, yeah, for me. And 'cause the dark, the, the, the light, I, seasonally that bothers me that we get so little light in the winter. So there... But there are just triggers. Like I'll sh- I'll give you another example. Um, Falling Down. I identify with Michael Douglas in this
JohnOh, boy.
Jeffbecause-
Johnnice you look today? Well,
Steveand I, I would never
JeffImagine how nice you look. Well, a- and I, I would never, like, pull out the
JohnWhere are we going with
Jeffbut, I'm just saying this scene with this... I don't know if you remember it, but they
JohnOh, yes
Jeffwas like three minutes behind 11:30 when they stopped serving breakfast, and look how smiley they were, and that's our policy, and da, da, da, and they were not willing to make an exception. And those kinds of things do trigger me when people are following
SteveNot human.
Jeffthat. yeah. they're, they're being robotic, and they're not being, you know, they're not meeting me halfway, and they're just, like, following the rule book or whatever. And d- they were just being sing-songy and fun, but he was getting pissed, and finally the, all, all, hell broke loose.
Johngets the burger. and the burger looks nothing like the burger.
JeffYeah.
JohnHey, by the way, ...that actor, does anybody recognize that actor? From Seinfeld. He was the sidler.
MichaelHe
JohnHe was the Sidler, and he's the one that Elaine-
Stevein, Elaine's office
JohnElaine's office ...yeah, and Elaine gave him the Tic Tacs, and she's like, "You know-"
StevePut 'em in your
JohnTacs?" And he goes, she goes, 'Cause your voice is bleh." And she does this bleh. So Yeah, Oh, you're such a nice lady, Elaine.
MichaelThat's
Stevea nice lady, Elaine. Uh, okay. So, so some ways to, examples how to, how to quell this, uh, heat is you take deep breaths. you let somebody merge, You'll, you look for the wave, hopefully. You choose not to respond immediately, so take a little break. Like, walk away. use humor, use music, get a treat, ice cream or licorice or, uh, what did,
JohnJerky. Yeah.
Jeffcan I have another academic, uh, thing? And that is I read a book back in the day called Learned Optimism by a University of Pennsylvania professor and, um, about this concept of self-talk, and, uh, he had a concept of A, B, C, D. So like A, something happens. Like B, your belief system generates the, um, self-talk that you have, even if it's wrong. C is, um, I can't remember, but D, you have to dispute that self-talk. And
Johnwe're not doing the whole alphabet, are we, Jeff?
Jeffjust the four, it's just the four letters, but the point is you have to dispute that internal dialogue because it's probably wrong, and that can really rise your blood pressure
SteveYeah. And, and taking some time from it makes you go, "Okay, well, I was..." Just like if you stress out about something ...right before you wake up, and you, ...when you wake up, you go, "Oh, it wasn't really that big of a deal," ...in your mind. But- I
Johnmean, really, when you think about all of the things that we get stressed out about,
SteveBigger picture
Johnall made it through all of them, Right? I
Jefftrue. It's
Steveand that's the hard part of life, trying to just de- take that deep breath and go, "Okay, wait a
Jeffand think about the 250th birthday we just had and all the people that came before us to make that possible. And so when you start, like, putting those kinds of thoughts in your mind, you can't help but be grateful and calm yourself through just like, you know, maybe I can't drive in that lane today, but gosh, those 17-year-olds that stormed the beaches of Normandy, I'm sure grateful for them.
Michaelum, and then, and then grab that, th- then reach in that bag of Old trapper and you grab ...a big chunk of jerky- and you put it in your mouth.
Jeffyou soldier for making this trapper jerky possible that I'm enjoying right
Johnthough? I think that that, you bring up a good point, Jeff. I mean, that really is a good point. The craziness that's, that we're experiencing in our country today. Yeah. and you think about those people that stormed the beach at Normandy. There's a, a Netflix George Washington show that I watched, uh, three-part show about... I knew very little about George Washington. And I thought I knew a whole bunch about him.
JeffBecause of the civility and, and all the stuff you
Johnthat stuff. That's what I thought. Uh, we have it pretty
MichaelYeah Yeah.
Johnmean, why are we so crabby with each other about things that
JeffDid you learn about George Washington's mother and how mean she was to him? Uh, it was awful. A- and he still was loyal to her and gave her money and helped her, and she would write mean articles about him in the paper while he was at war, you know, risking his li- it was just terrible. But he, he helped... Uh, it's just when you think about that and read about these stories and about these people that came before us and it, it does make you feel
Johnhad the same thing. He had a mean mom t-
JeffHe
JohnMaybe that's the key to success. We all have nice moms, ...and that's why we're just
Steveour problem?
Johndoing a podcast
Michaelyou, you guys have nice moms. I will, I will just, uh, to, to sort of put a button on what what you were saying about the 250 and all of that. Um, we do... When, when, when it gets hot and we lose... We, we have to recognize, I think, that this just dialogue is emphasizing that we just... A lot of it is so self-imposed. Yeah.
SteveYeah. Perspective
Michaeljust cramming so much in, trying to get so much done that we have to give ourselves some grace. and we have to give those around us some grace so that we can frigging enjoy some of the, the summer. To just sort of- like, don't overschedule the evening and go, "Well, I'm just gonna sit outside with my my
Jeffthat, that's the purpose of Sundays. The S- the Sunday is a Sabbath- It's meant to be rest, and some people work on that day and cram stuff in, and so we're meant to rest and reflect a little bit. I do think the frantic pace can get to
MichaelYeah.
SteveThis ties in perfectly. It's what I'm trying to get to here. Everyone is fighting a summer battle. Remember, the guy driving too slowly might be transporting his elderly parent somewhere. The cashier is working her third shift. The road crew has been standing on asphalt since 6:00 AM, right? These guys are like, "Ugh, just go, Whatever. Stop. Look at my pylons. Observe the pylons. Um, eat your jerky and move on, son." The parents
JohnI would have been fine if they would have been out there working- but there was nothing
Steveparents with screaming kids are probably more embarrassed than they are annoyed, you know? Uh, the waitress, uh, has walked seven miles, you know. Her, her step count might be super high. The lan- W- You know, the, the whole point is you don't know what people are going through. Right. Give people some grace. And like Michael's saying-
Johnyou directing this at me specifically?
Michaellooking at me too.
Johnhe, but he keeps pointing at
Jeffit, no, it's let's tell ourselves better stories with our internal dialogue.
JohnThere.
SteveTelling ourselves a better story is with our internal dialogue. Right, right. It just- Yeah ...and y- if you don't have, if you don't get to the, to the lake today, just enjoy your yard, enjoy your front porch or whatever
MichaelI agree
JeffIf a mosquito is biting you, it provides really good food for bats, right? Or
JohnWow. You know,
Stevewe're stretching pretty far there. Oh.
JohnJesus.
Michaelmy God, Jeff. Yeah.
SteveJeff, you didn't specify.
MichaelJeff, the introspective. Yeah
JeffI I know I'm getting a little syrupy here, ...but I-- 'cause I get pissed along with
MichaelI'm telling
Jeffthem. Don't worry
Steveof the bats. Um,
JeffI will say my dog helps. I look at my dog a lot, and that makes me happy too.
MichaelYeah.
JohnYeah. Yeah.
Stevelook at the dog enjoying grass or lawn. And, and this is part of it too. It's not a summer competition. Because we have limited time, ...we're all trying to get on a boat to get, go somewhere every y- as much as you can. This is not... Social media does not... help this situation. It makes it worse because it feels like they're missing
Johnthis is,
SteveLimited warranty?
Johnwe're, going on a long time here. What do we got? We
SteveWell done
Johnalso have limitations here. We gotta get to that point. Well done. Okay, you win.
SteveUh, anyway, yeah, social media doesn't help. The whole, the whole bit gets... Like, everyone's at a cabin, everyone's doing something great. and, you
JohnEverybody's in a Mountain Dew commercial except for
MichaelOh, that's good. That's good. Well, hey, on that, I just, I wanna take the opportunity as I always do when you guys have me in here once every other month to check in, thanks for the tune, um, to say, uh, thanks for bringing me in for the summer heat conversation. It's always
JohnWe'll see you in November.
MichaelYeah, I'll be back around Thanksgiving to talk about gravy. Yeah. Talk about gravy and how we're gonna cook the turkeys.
SteveI'm just kidding. Let's talk about gravy Let's talk about gravy and how we're gonna make it Ah. Yeah. I, I don't know. I, I... We will be having you back sooner, 'cause we need to have checkin' in. We gotta see how we're doing
JeffI wasn't sure if we're done or not. I can turn it off, but, uh, Okay. No, I'm just kidding.
Johnwas... You know what? We've solved a lot of problems today. Summer heat. Woo! Thank God for air conditioning. By the way, just can you dial it down for just a quick
Jeffabsolutely.
JohnBack to the World Cup thing, the, uh, just the fact that, like, very few people in Europe have air conditioning. They're gonna be going back to hot Europe and saying, "W- where did we miss the memo on air conditioning?" I had a friend, a coworker, that was just in Italy for two weeks, and they had the worst heat for, in, in,
Stevelike- Yeah, it's been bad
Michaelmy My, sister was in France last week. As a matter of fact, I'm gonna go She's here. She just landed here. We're gonna go see her after this. But they, like 1,000 people died in three days ...in France because of the heat. It was unbelievable
Johnf- Thank God for air
JeffI
Michaelthat helps keep the heat
JeffWhen we went to Europe, I could not find like a... I wanted a Diet Coke so bad and, and I could- but they were all warm. They didn't even have them under
Johnhave is Coke Zero
JeffUgh. And, and- ...And, then I wanted an American breakfast, and I couldn't find... And then all of a sudden ...I wa- I checked into my hotel- and I looked over, and there was a McDonald's that says, "We have American breakfast." I'm like, thank you."
JohnThe promised
MichaelHis kids are in the middle of traffic, he's running
SteveWell, try, tr- let's just say try to be the coolest person in the room
JohnOh.
Jeffpoo, be the shade to someone's
Steveyou go. Be someone's shade. Be your own shade
Johnyou know what?
Michaelyou
JohnAnd as big as we're
MichaelOh.
JohnWe could provide a lot of shade. With that note, I'm out.
