Um we actually had our guest uh flunk out on us for the evening, and uh we were waiting for the air conditioning guy to show up, and I said, Hey, you want to be on a podcast? This is last showing.

Oh, so I uh I used to work for this company called Outdoor Management where we just mow a lot of yards, a lot of Walgreens around. And I actually used to mow your parents' yard every other week, um, Mary and uh Ken Gorg. So yeah, I used to full circle. I used to mow your parents' yard. Weird.

What a small world. And what are the odds, right, John? Like the way this thing kind of organically came together, um, it just reminds you once again what a small world we live in. I mean, crazy situation to have our guest flunk out, have Mitchell there at the time the show starts, have that connection to my parents in Burnsville. And uh yeah, it is a small world.

Well, and here's what's funny one of the things that we were going to talk about today is the heat and how people get nuts in the heat. You know, the the it's hard to show kindness when you're that uncomfortable.

Here's a guy that's facing people that are irritated because their house is hot in this hot, hot heat. It's a cruel, cruel world.

Mitchell, tell us about that. What kind of I mean, tell we we hope that there's some people that show some level of of appreciation and kindness, but oh yeah.

I mean, if you can get them cooling before you end up leaving, then you usually those things go. Then you're the savior, right? Yeah, right. Then you're listed as the hero, everybody wants to be your friend, all the kids are happy. So, I mean, that's the best part if you can actually get it going when you get there the first second. What percentage of the time do you get it going? I'd say probably a good 70 to 5 to 85 percent. For the most part, you can get them up and go, and at least temporarily get them through a couple weeks or something until you can figure out, go down a different road, find out something else going on. But those are hall of fame statistics right there.

Yeah, let's hear about how much is this gonna cost John? Well, he does uh he does have a field capacitor to start.

Oh no. The flux capacitor capacitor doesn't sound very good.

So that could be why your compressor is overheating and causing you to have to flip that switch. So at the bare minimum, we do at least need to get that replaced for you. But with the type of refrigerant you have in there, it's over 20 years old as well. You might at least want to think about getting some other options. Just get some free information.

Second hand. So can he? I don't want a second hand one. Okay, let's get back to have you had any experiences this last couple of days? Were you on this weekend? Did they make you work the weekend?

So this weekend I wasn't, but the previous weekend and then the following week before that I was, where it was, you know, 95 to 100 the whole week. You know, work until 10, 11 o'clock at night, you know, trying to get these people cooling as much as you can. And then you still have five or six people that you didn't even have time to get to. So then you have to make those uncomfortable phone calls like, hey, I know it's already 9 30, 10 o'clock, but I unfortunately am not going to be able to make it out to you tonight. So we'll give you a call right away tomorrow and try to get you rescheduled. So those conversations don't always go over very well, but you do what you can, you know.

This customer is very grateful that you uh that you made it out here. I'm sure you were battling traffic to get here. So that's everywhere in the twin cities there's traffic in construction. So give us a couple of stories of uh customers that were particularly upset with their situation and maybe the opposite, you know.

Uh more of these will kind of flow into one big pool. But when it's when you're in Minnesota and it's over 95 degrees out and the humidity is at 100%, customers seem to think that their 15 to 20 year old systems can hold at 68 degrees in their house. That is the most unrealist, unrealistic thing you could ever ask for. I might be one of those kinds of things. 68. You go in there, it's holding at like 73, 74, and they're thinking that the world is ending. It's like and you see that the thermostat's set at 68 degrees, and it's like, come on, we just gotta be a little realistic here for a couple weeks. Nobody's house is gonna be unless you live in a 600 square foot studio apartment. You're gonna complain, and they're in their attic, just trying to wait where where the coolest. And uh, don't even get me started on attics either in Minnesota. I mean, even at nine o'clock in the morning, they're already 120, 130 degrees, you know. Seriously. Oh, yeah. I even had a rooftop this morning, my first call right away at nine o'clock, and it was steaming on that rooftop in St. Paul this morning, like only five, six stories up, but it was it was already real hot. How long have you been doing this? Uh, going on about four years now. Um, didn't go to school or anything like that, so kind of just picked it up and learned on the road as I go. You're kidding.

He started using terms, and I'm like, what are you doing? I don't know what any of this stuff he started Your flux capacitor is. No, I know what a flux capacitor is. That helps you get to 88 and a half miles an hour.

Okay, so so we're we're talking about expectations, people's expectations, right? So that's where it started. People think, well, I want my house cool. I want it to be 68, and it's only 73.

What what other kind of things do people come at you with where you're like Um, well, just it not cooling at all, and then you go downstairs and pull out their furnace filter and it hasn't been changed in 18 months, and the customer doesn't even know that they have a furnace filter or what it is or how to change it, and wondering why their house isn't cooling. That's another huge one. Is that a you do have one of those? I do have a furnace filter.

Typically, man. So, how do you handle that when someone is irritated and then you help them under do you handle them kindly or do you go? Oh, always, always but kill them with kindness. Customers, right?

SPEAKER_05 7:11

Kill them with kindness every time. I mean, you gotta just I mean, try to explain it to them in layman's terms, I suppose. Just be like, hey, I mean, everything checking on my pressures, everything is looking good, your splits are looking good, furnace filters clean, we have great airflow. I mean, just there's a hundred percent humidity in the air, and it's almost a hundred degrees. It's just not going to be possible. It's gonna be tough. It's gonna be real tough, but this is a good point where you're at. You know what percentage of people tip you? Ooh, probably about five percent. Oh, really? Yeah, but I mean I do get tips every once once. I mean, they'll give me coffee or money every once in a while.

I when you come back, I will we'll tip you. Mrs. Schweitz is uh off to a thing and she took all of my cash. And I'm like, I called her and I'm like, dude, how am I gonna tip this guy? I have no cash. We'll see if he takes Venmo. So we'll have to talk Venmo later.

I mean, come on. How about how about any okay? So I'm go ahead. I was just gonna ask, I think I know where you're going. How about some stories of people that are incredibly kind and nice or done something where you're like, wow, you you're in the middle of the state.

Most of them, most of them are nice. I mean, most I mean, Minnesota's got great people. So I mean, most people are pretty understanding. You're there to try to help them. So, I mean, they're not gonna want to try to aggravate you when you're trying to help them out. But but I mean, there's been some where there's I'm like the fourth or fifth technician to end up showing up at a house, and it's just something as simple as a wire being loose, and I just it takes me 35, 45 seconds to get it fixed for them, and then they're just the most grateful person. They offer me lunch and dinner and and give me a $20 or something to tell me to go get lunch. But yeah, most of the time, about 90 to 95 percent of customers are very understanding, really nice people, and just they just want the same thing as you to help them get some cooling, right?

Are you from this area? You grew up here?

I grew up in Texas actually. My dad was in the military, so we kind of bounced around, born in Germany, but spent my first 18 years in Texas, and then but my dad was born and raised here, so that's where all the Minnesota Tis come to. So once I graduated high school, I was like, man, screw Texas, it's too way too hot down there, you know. Minnesota's a way better place because we used to come up here every couple summers for a little bit. But and then I've just been up here since about 2010. Yeah. Okay.

Were you at Rammstein Air Force Base, or where were you in in Germany?

SPEAKER_05 9:19

Uh, I was uh I wasn't on the base in Germany, but I was um born in Amberg. So I mean it's in an actual German hospital, even though my dad was in the military. I'm German.

How does that work for citizenship? Or do you I'm a dual citizen? Oh, but would you ever get to be president because you were born in Germany? I doubt it. I don't know. That's a good question. I may have to research that.

Yeah, maybe back and forth. What do you guys got? Well, let me ask you one first. Do you have any steam on Billy G going down to talk to Quinn?

Well, I know he's there, and I know he's gonna be spending that. Is he making his meatballs in Michigan trying to get that facilitated, and I know the Wild want a seven or eight year extension, and I think it's gonna end up being closer to three. Sure. That three-year deal would line up with Jack's contract in New Jersey, and the plan would be after three years to try to get them both secured here for the Wild. So I think it happens. I think it happens in the next week or so. If it doesn't happen in the next couple of weeks, then it might be time to start thinking that maybe there's a a fork in the road. I don't foresee that happening. I think it gets done rather quickly.

No, I haven't. He's the reigning general manager of the year in the National Hockey League. I'm a sideline reporter, so no, I'm not gonna overstep my boundaries and give him my advice. He doesn't need it, that's for sure.

I got a call from the wild, uh, just kind of expressing um their their wishes that uh they bring the crew back. And are you interested? I said, absolutely. I was waiting for this call. Um and then John King, who does the hockey here videos, put together uh a promotional video for social media that was rather embarrassing for years, truly, but it was very fun. Let's talk about that. I didn't see it. Hockey fans. I haven't been on rollerblades in 41 years, John. And uh we're at Canterbury in the in the in the paddock, which you've been down there. It's uh not exactly a smooth surface, right?

And you got Al Stalock, who just got done playing in the National Hockey League, who's on rollerblades with his kids basically every week. And then I I get out there and I'm not making excuses. I I put on a pair of rollerblades that were a size and a half too big. I haven't been on them in over 40 years, and I look like a complete buffoon. I almost went down phase first. That would have made for even better TV. But uh no, the promotional video was awesome. We had Lou Nanny, uh Katie Storm, the whole crew. So we're excited to be back.

Um what are your thoughts on this whole uh Dylan Larkin thing with uh with Detroit changing GMs and all that? Do you think it's still Dylan Larkin or bust, or do you think we're kind of exploring other options now that this road is going to take at least another month or two or three, depending on how long it takes them to get a new GM in and see if he likes Dylan Larkin? Did they end up changing GMs because of Dylan Larkin to keep him? What do you what do you think about that whole deal going on over there?

Great question. I I think the biggest thing we learned uh through that process is Iserman didn't want to make the deal the Wilde offered because he knew he was already on the hot seat. And that deal that the Wild likely offered, and the rumor is it was a first round pick uh in 27. It was a player like Charlie Strammel, who's gonna be an incoming rookie from Michigan State, and then Danila Yurov, who's uh looks like a budding, really solid middle sixth center. So that was a deal that would give Detroit something for the future. And you know, if you're Steve Eiserman, you're on the hot seat, you're probably not looking at that deal as something you want to make because you might be gone by the time the good, you know, the goodness of that deal comes to fruition. So when that when that change at the top happened, I think it gives the wild a better option. My feeling is this if it happens great, I think Billy Guern's made his best offer and he doesn't seem to budge from that. And so he'll look at it this way if it happens, it's gonna happen before training camp gets going. So in the next couple of uh six, seven weeks. If it doesn't, you get Philip Gustison healthy by November and you make a big deal sometime between November and March when the trade deadline is. And remember, the Red Wings don't want to bring Larkin back during training camp because he was one of your go-to players, he was one of your captains, and now he doesn't want to be there. So they they want to make this move sooner. I think it's good for the wild that we're not hearing anything right now because the longer this thing goes and the closer we get to the Red Wings opening up training camp in September, the more they're gonna be out to take the deal. So I think Billy's made his offer, and I don't think he'll change his offer, and it just comes down to whether the the Red Wings want to build for the next uh maybe three or four years, or if they wanted to panalize teams by trying to make a deal for right now. So I I think the wild are in a good spot.

Did you watch any golf this weekend?

I'm gonna tell you right now, we had to cancel racing on Sunday because of the heat, and I watched every single shot on Sunday of Jackson Coivan. And for the non uh crazy golf fans like me, this is the 21-year-old kid we've been hearing about for a couple of years, probably the best college golfer we've seen since Tiger Woods, and he um he played as an amateur in the U.S. Open and finished 23rd. So you knew this kid was gonna be a little amateur. Yes, and to see him out there in his third event as a pro, stare down Scotty Scheffler, who you knew was gonna make a Sunday charge, and and Jackson Coivan was absolutely unflappable. He played terrific. Um he seems like a super humble, down-to-earth guy, fits the kindness chronicles profile. He should be the new favorite golfer of our podcast. I love the kid, and uh he's great for golf because I think he's gonna be a real superstar on the tour.

So let me tell you. So the fine folks of Fairview, fine folks at Fairview invited me and uh a few of my uh so my two boys and my daughter's uh special friend and Becky. We all got to go. And thank God we had tickets to both the Fairview suite, which was overlooking the 18th green, and then we also had uh tickets in uh King's Corner, which is right there overlooking 17. The the the green on 17 and the green on 14. So we're in the front row. I am hot as hell because I want to see all these guys, and I mean we were f we were you know 20 feet away from these guys, and it was super funny because we've played TPC a whole bunch of times, and when you see where they were teeing off from on 17, I didn't even know there was a T box back there. Becky, Becky comes in and she's like, Well, where are they teeing off from? I'm like, way up there. She goes, Well, that's not where the T's are. I go, That's not where our T's are, but that's where the T's are. Professional, yeah. And you know, you couldn't really see the ball, but all of a sudden you hear this plunk, and it was just it was super fun. But that Claven guy, what a stud. I mean absolute stallion. And just a humble seems like a hell of a guy. Where is he from? He well, he played at Auburn.

Played at Auburn. Um, I think he was born in Chapel Hill, but but he was lived most of his childhood in California, okay, and he's been a phenom. He beat his dad on the golf course. His dad's a good golfer at age seven. Um, he bested his dad on the golf course. This kid's been talked about for many years. Like, this is like one of those players where you're like, he could be a generational talent to see him come out this early and win the way he did. And it's funny, I I do. I follow the uh the fantasy golf, the betting markets. He was one of the top five favorites scoring in that tournament. They knew. Like the betting markets have adjusted, they know this kid's a special talent. It does remind me, and I know he's not gonna be Tiger Woods. No one ever will probably duplicate what Tiger did, not even Scheffler. But it's exciting to have the young talent that this tour has right now. And you know, Liv is going away, so we're gonna get back Bryson DeShampoo, we're gonna get back John Rom and some of those great personalities. Golf is in a really good place right now, so it was awesome to watch.

And then, of course, here I am charming young man comes down here with great pipes, and gives you yeah, great pipes, gives you a diagnosis for your air conditioning. He knows and he's connected to KG. He knows KG's show and is a big fan, but also cut his parents' grass. We need to take a little uh everything happens for a reason. It's crazy.

Like, do you ever get those Klingon people that are looking for a friend that like think you're you've got the great pipes, you like sports, you're a good looking kid. It's all technically. Like, do you ever get the Klingon customers that you can't shake? Because it goes both ways, right? Because the cable guy is when Jim Carrey plays a guy that's come to the guy's house and gets a bad. What if it gets turned around and you've got a Klingon that you deal with? How have you handled that?

I just I prefer full transparency when I'm doing my work. So I mean, if that means they're behind my shoulder counting every hair I have standing up on the back of my neck as they're watching me, that's fine. Because I mean, at least if something's going on, like they have a bad part or something like that, they can actually see it in real time with me at the same time, so they don't think I'm just out to get a buck from them or something like that. People do that. People sit and watch and wait. More more than you really like to admit. Oh, weird.

So I, as you know, spend a lot of time with elderly people. You know, I uh just so you understand I'm a uh an estate planning lawyer and I help people give money to charity essentially. And there was this one time I went to this lady's house, it's a person that I visited with from time to time. It was on uh I don't know, Netflix or something, but it was just about Christopher Nolan's vision and like they literally shot in uh absurd, hard-to-reach places, and the sets were purposely looking old. I thought it was old castles, but they built a lot of that stuff to be old cards.

And it's it's a very easy place to navigate because it was built to house 25,000 people, and most of our crowds are six, eight, ten thousand strong. You've got that whole area that's changed around there with the restaurants and the bars, the amphitheater.

They're trying to navigate 50 yard dash, and it's it's fun to watch.

Oh, kids 50 yards. They train for it. Oh, they train for it. Oh, these families are insane. Like, and and if you qualify, if you're one of the top two dogs in your heat on whatever day you have, the Beagle Day, the Wiener Dog, we do three heats each time a particular breed runs. You come back on Labor Day weekend to see which of the breeds is the fastest, and they win all these cool prizes, you know, like pet supplies for a year, food for a year. So it's really it's a fun, and the crowds are insane. We always have at least 10,000, 11,000 for these dog days. They roar when the dogs start running. Some of the dogs run in a straight line, others are distracted by the crowd, some run towards the turf course. Like it's it's total chaos. It's it's great fun.

Yeah, they have each dog has two handlers, right? And when then in theory, if you're gonna win the heat or qualify, you gotta keep them focused the whole time. But uh the problem is when I say go or when Paul Allen says go, and that crowd of 10,000 roars, they lose focus, and that's when the chaos starts, and that's when the fun really begins.
