Welcome and Introduction

The . The name Zafira means a lot to me .

Zafira means a lot to me . What's up everybody . Welcome to the podcast . You know the name , I'm not going to say it . We're streaming live right now over everything , episode 181 . 181 episodes it's a beautiful thing , and on this episode , jack's back , I got some discussion topics . Three member bands yeah , I can't get in the way of that . Pigs , pigs , pigs , pigs , pigs , pigs , pigs . Name of the song is GNT . Go download it . Fucking blood pumping music . Yeah , so we're going to have a good show . Mark Flynn already comments in 181 , what a great ring . Yeah , all right , let me bring in Jack Jackie .

Boy , scotty Boy , what's going on ? Thank you for the accommodation tonight .

Yeah , anything for you , buddy . See I've matured . See how you have to admit I have matured over the last 180 episodes well 160 you've gotten older 100 .

I've gotten older , you've gotten older still a bad motherfucker though you are a bad don't forget that so I had to put off jumping on until 715 or 725 , because I'm on a tear . I promised myself that I'm gonna get on my Peloton every day , so I had to sneak a ride in fucking .

just stick a lead pipe up my ass . Ugh , fuck that .

Sammy Ray my man . You want a lead pipe up your ass ?

Well , it's like we're sitting on a fucking Peloton .

Yeah .

Look , I'm not built like a girl like you , okay , look , you got your little purple , pink and yellow and I got my fucking one-man , one-mic , turbo , ultra cold brew and Bustelo coffee .

Coffee at $7.26 .

I need it because I got to deal with you .

That's simple , it's simple Because I have gotta deal with you . That's simple . It's simple because I have to deal with you . So , hey , do you want to know why I had to get ?

on the peloton . Well do , uh oh well , you big head , todd the wet sprocket , he's gonna say it . I'm here entertain me . Blah , blah , blah , blah , blah . All right , why were you on the peloton ?

so I have to go on this business trip . I had to , I I had to go and buy a tux oh , yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah , you were telling me that yeah , I think things are a little tighter than they should be well , look at , that's what happens .

That's what happens when we get older . We're never gonna be fucking . You're never gonna be real thin like you were when you're in your 20s and 30s oh okay , eventually we'll both be real thin yeah that's one way to look at it eventually we're gonna be real thin .

I'm just hey , I'm just giving myself a fighting chance that's right .

That's right . You get on the peloton . I get more tattoos .

So that works . I'm telling you so . So a couple of weeks ago I went to , uh , joseph , a banks .

You know the , the suit place I'm sorry , jack , I'm sorry you get your fucking , your two-man fan club back to back yeah , they know jack with 10 exclamation points . Big head todd the wet sprocket . Finally a real show .

Jack is here hey , you know what I ? I can jump off so you can do your music news for the next hour . Hey , jerry lee lewis took a shit today in 1963 that's interesting .

You know that's interesting stuff though yeah , yeah , the fact that he did take a shit on this day in 1963 is probably a fact .

Yes , but the weird thing about Jerry Lee Lewis is the shit that he took was on his 13-year-old cousin , who he just married Scat rock . Scat rock .

Man , he was an originator .

He was an originator All rightator .

All right , you tux ?

tell us about the tux I , there's really nothing to tell . I mean I , I have to go to this event . Deb's gonna wear an evening gown and I had . I had to get a tux and deb was like why don't you just rent one ? I was like I don't want to be at this event , feeling like people are looking at me because I'm in a rented tux and you know we're gonna , we're gonna be over there for like 10 days . We're gonna be in prague , so very proggy you oh my god , that's a jack joke .

That is , that's quality I I am so glad that you're being more pragmatic these days . So look , in any event , you know , even if I wanted to rent a tux , I'm going to be over there for like 10 days . We're going to be in private . It would have cost me the same amount of money .

Can you move your microphone closer ? How's this ? See ? See how much better that sounds . But you want to be lazy . I'm not being lazy . You need a boom on where you can sit back like you like to sit back and bring the microphone you're in .

You're in front of a computer , right , you need to put that big get on it , you put to put that big black ditty microphone right in your face . That's what you need get on amazon right now and you buy your friend jack a nice boom I have dude , I I will send you .

I got more fucking podcast equipment than I know . I will send you a boom on , absolutely I will . I got like nine of them that I don't need because I use these . Now I use this . What is that ? It's a desktop boom . It goes up .

You can put it up there , you can send me one of those .

Send me one of this one you're gonna buy . I'm not fucking look at you , oh yeah , yeah , you're not . You're the fucking , the big , high-powered insurance executive . For the listeners not health insurance , not health insurance . We had that discussion the other day . It's not health insurance , so don't blame Jack . So , by the way .

Speaking of health , can I bring up a topic ?

I'm looking very healthy .

Well you are . You're looking very spry , very nice . But you know we talk more about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame than probably any other show that's out there , right yeah ?

we talk a lot about it .

And we talk about people that have been passed over . Yeah , and we probably take it for granted that there are certain bands that are going to get in and the timing of it doesn't matter . But you know what it does matter , and we we're experiencing right now a situation where the timing of the nominees and the induction of rock and roll hall of fame bands makes a difference . And what I mean is what is currently in the news or has been in the past , like week and a half or so . Bad company , which has been passed over a bunch of times , finally got into the rock and roll hall of fame . And what happened ?

mick ralphs , the lead guitar player , died about a week and a half ago yeah so you know this poor bastard what a great way to cap off his life to be at that event , and because they were passed over probably a bunch of times , he's now going to be inducted posthumously .

Yeah , but he was alive to see Sheryl Crow , the Go-Go's , joan Jett , dolly Parton , going ahead of him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . I'm sure that made him feel fucking great .

So here's my question yeah , with a lot of our rock and roll heroes from the 1670s that are really getting up there , yeah , do you think ? Do you think that the committee for the rock and roll hall of fame now takes that into ?

consideration . Uh , that's a good question . There should be a quick answer to it . It should be no , because they get . They should get in the way they they should have gotten in . I don't know , like you know what it's like why are they not good enough one year but they're good enough another year ? You know what I mean . Like that is that and that's in sports hall of fames , that's in every hall of fame , right ?

um , by the way , this , this stupid thing that I'm going to in prague yeah , I guess drew breeze is going to be there . Do you know who that is ?

yeah , he was the quarterback for the new orleans saints super bowl champion quarterback , record-breaking quarterback he's going to be the second best breeze there . Yeah , yeah , just don't talk about the mole , the mole , what mole ? He used to have a big mole on his face . Oh , really One of those big , like you know , brown ones Moley , moley , moley , moley , moley . Yeah , don't stare at the mole scar that he had , don't ? He's very sensitive about that .

He is Now guy that he had don't ? He's very sensitive about that . He is now . You're going to be looking at it , I'm going to be looking for it , we're looking for it . So , speaking of that , did I ever tell you the story ? This is not music related , but I was working for a company called chubb , so chubb life insurance . I was working as an underwriter , not to be confused with the great Shub Rock .

That's right All right come on and I was working as an underwriter and they had a sales contest for life insurance . So the team that I was on , we were responsible for processing all of these life insurance applications , assessing their medical you know whether they were worthy to have life insurance , blah , blah , blah . So the contest ends and the marketing department and the CEO and the senior management team comes to our floor and they throw us a pizza party to say thank you for the great job that we did during the contest . So you know me

Musical Trivia: Who Sings This Song?

, winthrop guy , guy like you , I'm toe to toe with the CEO of Chubb Life and we're shooting the shit and we're busting each other's balls and we're eating pizza and stuff .

And I get a napkin and I start going to his face . I was like , ah , you got a little crumb there . You got a little crumb there , you little crumb there . After about the seventh swipe I realized it's not a crumb , he's got a skin tag . Oh , and that crumb is not going anywhere . And I can see him looking at me like , uh , that's not going anywhere . It's not what you think it is so we lost um mick ralphs yeah .

Let me see . Mark Flynn said Debbie Harry . I know Debbie Harry turned 80 yesterday . I saw a video of her Right and I'm one of those guys that I'm still checking her out . I'm seeing how she looks even though she's 80 . Like I was , I was . I loved Blondie . You know , there was the thing Pat Benatar , blondie type thing .

No , blondie .

Right , blondie type thing , no Blondie right . Yeah , pat Benatar had her share of fans .

You know that she did , she did and she's a beautiful woman too .

Debbie Harry was just that sexy little imp and she was talking and she , you know , she has that Debbie Harry , fate , like you know , it's her and and this is a little crazy but she's talking and she kind of lifts her arm up right and her shirt rides up a little bit and I'm like , damn , she's still got a flat stomach . 80 maybe , maybe , maybe I don't know , maybe I would I I think she still looks good .

I think , scott , at 80 , there's a good chance you're gonna have a flat stomach . I don't think so . No , I don't think so at 80 I , I think I think debbie harry has always and still is a very beautiful woman naturally beautiful , naturally very beautiful yeah , yeah , hey , because you brought her up , pat benatar , I'll tell you one of the things that drives me nuts apparently depends on scott or on debbie harry .

We'll see .

It remains to be seen so so my my issue with pat benatar . I love pat benatar , I've seen her in concert a handful of times , but it drives me . This type of shit drives me nuts . She refuses to do hit me with your best shot in concert anymore . I don't blame her . Why all ?

right , I know , there's the two . There's two sides to this coin , of course , right ? Uh , dave phillips , king of the 45s , pat benetoff and dave egan , my friend , how are you ? Um , there's two sides to that coin . One is the fans . Paid the money . Give the fans what they want . The other is , um , why the fuck do I have to ? I it's , it's my show , just you came to me . I don't have to do the oldies .

But there's been a lot of like this girl . I know this Brazilian woman . She went to see one of my she's my favorite Brazilian artist , babel Gilberto , and she yelled up to like yell . She's close to the stage and she yells up to her sing you know whatever song and she goes honey , this is my show , I'll sing my songs . Like a lot of and she's been around like a lot of them are like hey , I don't really . I watched you too at sun devil stadium fucking play . I will follow . In about 60 seconds it was the fastest version of that song that I'd ever seen them sing but but here's , here's my issue .

I I hear what you're saying in terms of an artist can go up there and and do what they want . My , my issue is that pat benatar does not play . Hit me with your best shot because she thinks it promotes violence oh , all right , the rest of the story yeah , I mean for for me , I always thought that that song was about female empowerment so I never paid attention to that liberal shit , so I wouldn't .

I just thought it was like she's's like , give it to me , give it . I looked at it like that testosterone driven 17 year old . Oh , I'll give you my best shot . Oh , I'll give you my best shot .

I'll hit you with my best , mark . Mark , yeah , he just wrote a diatribe here . Well , he says Pat Benatar will not hit me with the best shot in concert out of respect for the victims and families of mass shootings .

That's fucking ridiculous . Hold on , hold on . You got to know who you're dealing with . Mark Flynn is the king of Google . This fucking guy . There's no way he writes like that number one . I've never seen him write tongue in cheek tongue dash in dash . He doesn't write like that . He fucking Googled this to try to sound like he knows what he's talking about . I know they don't say . They say don't insult your fans . Well , I'm insulting him . He's the king of Google . She fills the song's title in lyrics while intended to be tongue in cheek . He doesn't write like that , he doesn't even talk like that are inappropriate given the current climate of gun violence .

See , are inappropriate given the current climate of gun violence .

See , this is this is okay , look at it . Look , I I appreciate .

I really don't want to hear the song . I appreciate the sentiment , but that's so stupid . It is because the meaning of that song has nothing to do with gun violence or any of that stuff to to me . I think it's a way for her to grab headlines I think it's an excuse .

She doesn't want to fucking sing the song anymore that may .

That may be the case that may be .

But then just come out like morrissey and say I'm not an oldies act I . He sings a couple of smith songs but the rest of it is him like . But hers are all oldie songs . You know what I mean ? She didn't have two lives in the music world .

Yeah .

She's always been consistent , like Pat Benatar . Right , morrissey has his shit and he has his shit with the Smiths . But I mean I can see although as they get older I've seen bands they have no problem playing that shit . If people are fucking paying them , that's their retirement to all money . If people are fucking paying them , that's their retirement to all money . You know what I mean well , like squeeze , I saw squares .

They played singles in 40 pretty much played singles and 45s and other yeah but I I think there's a big difference between marcy that has an artistry about him and has a loyal following that will dive deep into the catalog like you can't , you can't go to , uh , a foreigner concert and foreigner says , ah , you know , we're really going to dive deep into the catalog . We'll play jukebox hero , but we're going to play a bunch of stuff you guys don't know . They will lose their audience .

So well , haven't you seen that though ? Have you ? Have you not seen that ? And have you never gone to a concert ? And it's like , oh , all right , this guy's playing now all right , I'm asking you you're , you're , you're another level music person yeah , like you know .

You know , one of the one of the worst shows I've ever seen was neil young in the in the 80s when he did his whole shocking pinks in his um I forget what the name of the record was called , but his electronic album it was . It was terrible . The audience was bored , shitless and and that was back in the day , yeah , when the ticket , when the tickets were 20 bucks and you would pay . Can you imagine paying 300 and somebody you know , bruce springsteen , coming out and saying I'm gonna play lucky town in human touch tonight ?

well as the story goes , you know , know with me . I saw Radiohead in Miami when they kicked off the tour . It was like four years ago or something , maybe . Well , it was before COVID , wasn't it ? Yeah , I think it was right before COVID . And dude fucking behind me , people will pay fucking 200 bucks , 150 bucks or more to see one song . And this motherfucker just goes me . Why isn't he playing creep ? Why , saying he , why isn't he playing creep like yeah , the radio head , right , not they . Why isn't he playing creep like there you go , so you're gonna get those people right .

Thank you , steve romano he's a nail young , that's . You know . He has like a nail young facebook group with like fucking a million people on it or some shit like that . I don't know .

He's the moderator steve , do you like the record reactor ?

I'm just curious and that'll be a 15 second delay , but he'll answer .

We don't have to wait for it . I'm sure there are aspects of that record that he may like , just because he's that much of a fan he's a huge , but I but I have , but I have to tell you what there were , I don't know , 18 , 20 000 of us in the audience , fucking bored , yeah , shitless yeah , I mean just absolutely not like me at the black and blue tour with fucking black sabbath with dio boring what did you want ? Your eight bucks back ?

I was sitting in the loge in the back right corner .

They weren't bad , and you know eight bucks . And , by the way , didn't you already get your money's worth ? Didn't you steal a bunch of concert t-shirts ?

I did I always did one thing I did . I always tried to get as close as I could to the stage and I was notorious for stealing concert t-shirts from the vendors . Steve romano two good songs off a reactor , Neil Young .

And that's coming from like a diehard Neil Young fan . Steve Romano knows just about everything .

He certainly does . He certainly does .

All right , hey , a great artist to follow . No question .

Let me see Big Head Todd the way Sprocket just commented and Kelly Hansansen announced he's leaving foreigner this morning . I watched it on fox and friends this morning , not like king of google that's a shot at mark flynn .

Kelly hansen isn't even the lead singer or the original lead singer for foreigner so I this , this is actually going to lead into something .

Maybe this is a good segue . All right , I was gonna . I was gonna do . Let's save that I have . I want to get these musics . I want to get this , this , this music trivia out of the way . I was supposed to do it last week with you . Uh , let

Rock Hall of Fame Timing Debate

me see steven romano just commented in uh , not one song from that album ever got radio time yeah , but did it deserve radio time ?

I don't know . Uh , all right , the name of this segment is who sings this song ? And this is a a soul kind of motown version . And the reason I asked this is because I've I've heard songs come on the radio and I know the song , and then it will say you know , like I'll see on my SiriusXM thing , and it will say the name of the group and I'm like , oh fuck , I didn't know they sang it , because the song is so good that it just maybe people don't pay attention to who sings them . There's always a certain group of artists that get stuck in oh , they sing this , they sing this , but it's not them . All right . So an example who sings this song ? Jack ?

I'm gonna be really bad at this . Hold on , that's the spinners .

I'll be around , very good very good , all right , you're one for one . Very good , very good , all right . You're one for one . How many are there ? I'll do five , six , we'll see how far it goes . We'll see how good you're doing , who sings this , and the listeners can learn something if they don't already know .

I'm going to jump ahead .

I need vocals ? All right , it's coming . There we go this sounds like the Shy Lights , but I don't know the song . It's not the Shy Lights . I love this . Hold on , I love this . All that it's uh the floaters I never would have got that so this is what I'm talking about . Like a lot of people say this like oh , that's the oj's , because that may be the only soul band , or or you know , uh , let's see , what else do we got ?

I know who the OJs are . I don't know who the Floaters are . Never heard of that band .

Okay , let's see who sings this . Maybe you've never heard this song . Sounds like Al Green a little bit . See , if he starts when they start singing , ain't no place . I'd rather be than with you .

I recognize the voice .

You do . It's the Isley Brothers .

Yeah .

Yeah , let's see what about this one . Walk with me .

Dude , you're playing me some deep cuts here .

Maybe to you . Let me go , hold you , let me go .

The floaters is not a deep cut .

I didn't think so . Well , again , I listened to that music . So to me it's not like you know . Let me see . All right , here we go , here we go . Who sings this one ?

It's the Temptations .

There you go . Just my imagination .

By the way , did you see how fast I got that one ?

You did . It's a popular song , right , All right this one , curtis Mayfield .

No , wait a minute minute . Who's that lady ? I'll I'll say this is the oj's the eisley brothers again the eisley .

I like that song too . That's a great song . That's a great song , that's right . Alright , this one's easy . You should get this one that is the temptations again .

Papa was a rolling stone .

Yes , who does this ? It's an instrumental . Again with Papa was a Rolling Stone . Yes , who does this ? It's an instrumental .

Chuck Mangione . No , I'm just kidding .

One of the greatest instrumentals ever made , and I'm not just saying that .

I can't really hear it .

What's that bass ? Listen to bass , that's .

That's fat man . Good evening , ladies and gentlemen , and welcome to the show Right right , right , we get some slow mellow tunes for you tonight . Synth baby , I don't know who it is , but I love it Cool and the gang Summer Madness Go download it .

Mark Smith knows he said summertime . Will Smith sampled that whole thing Summertime .

Do you hear about poor Will Smith ?

No , I don't really care about him .

Well , I'm being facetious . Okay , so he's trying to make a ? Comeback yeah , he does a movie . It goes nowhere , so he pivots . All right , I'm gonna go back to my roots and put out a new record . I I probably have the exact number wrong , but I I looked it up the other day , just for shits and giggles . Will smith's new album sold 268 copies done ?

he's done . Now let's sidetrack , still get some more songs . It's it's . It's a fun segment , right , it's interesting . Um diddy the . The greatest fucking diss man in hip hop is 50 Cent . 50 Cent is a fucking wrecking ball right , he's got the quickest wit , sharpest wit . He's fucking smart and he throws this out there today . This is a headline 50 Cent shares . Swift reaction to diddy verdict beat the rico . He , the gay john garty , he's the gay john gun . Unfucking believable . That's the . That's got to be one of the greatest headlines I've ever read how long do you think ?

how long do you think diddy's gonna be in jail ?

now he's not . Now I'm pretty sure he's gonna get probation because he's a first-time offender and it's prostitution charge , um . But but with that said , he's now a pariah Like nobody is going to go near him . Any artist that tries to go on his label is done . Nobody's going to listen . This guy , he'd be better off in prison . I was telling Dr Vera this today .

Pat Benatar and Artist Choices

He'd be better off in prison because in prison at least he could say he got some cred , and that's big in that world . Like he could say got some cred , and that's big in that world . Like he could say I did time , I'm doing time right , and he'd come out like whatever , but he's still doing time he gets out .

He can't , you can't say that now . I mean , he's been in jail for how long ?

now that's a holding . He's in holding , he's not in . He's not in the joint . That's a whole different world . You know what I mean . Even if he would have been in some you know know , fucking high-level federal prison . You're still doing time right Like you're going to do 20 , and you get 85% I think 85% . You have to do 85% of that time , but he gets off . He's going to go home . He's got his hundreds of millions of dollars , but nobody's gonna call him , nobody's gonna hang out with him . He can't make records . He'd be better off in fucking jail . He's done like he'll live a comfortable life , but his ego isn't gonna be able to handle it . You'll see him coming back . He's gonna just make it worse on himself because he's so so what ?

what do you ? What do you do if you're him ? Do you , do you actually take your money and go ?

live in europe somewhere . He can't . His ego won't allow it . Right , his ego will not allow it . Um , yeah , you , you fucking lay low . You just take your money , you live your life and you lay low , you go on trips , you take your jets to fucking tahiti , you take your family . He can't do that though . Yeah , he's not wired for that . No , this is why it's going to be worse . That he's in fucking he's , he's back out on the street because he's .

The industry is everything to him . He came up in the industry , he was a big player in the industry . Now the industry wants nothing to do with him . You know why ? Because he , the gay john gotti at least john gotti was a tough guy , a legitimate fucking tough guy . You know what I mean . Like the stories that are out there about diddy . Now , like these there's no putting the toothpaste back in the tube , buddy . There's no putting the the baby oil back into the baby oil too . He's done like he's done and nobody's gonna go near him , so , anyway . So let's get back to this . Let's get back to this . Um , there's , there's a few more . Let me see . All right , who sings this ? You'll know this song . Oh , this is about 1981 . 1980 . Ain't no ?

stopping us . This is Ain't no . Stopping Us Now , right .

Yeah , who doesn't ?

I'll fast forward . It is that teddy pendergrass . Nope , no harold melvin in the blue notes , which is the same thing , teddy , uh much uh , all right , I'm gonna give you a hint .

Two prolific writers in the industry is a chic no mcfadden and whitehead oh yeah , I wouldn't have guessed that .

I can't . I know , I knew it was something like that , but I , there's no because there was a popular song right yeah , yeah , it's a great song all right , let me see who does this is this not the spinners ?

nope the stylistics good call , you got a good one , good one . Let me see this one you got a good one , good one . Let me see this one Great fucking song . Some people I could sing that low .

Is this Isaac Hayes ?

Nope .

This isn't Isaac Hayes . Nope , oh my God Some people . I made a wood taste . Nope , oh my god , some people . Some people have hearts of stone who sings it ?

I don't know good , they're dramatics . See these songs that come out like this . People think somebody else sings them .

I should know , but in all fairness , a lot of these are one hit wonders . Not all of them , that's not my point .

My point is People hear songs and I'm not saying these are popular songs that people think other people sing . You know what I mean ? Like they'll always say the temptations , the stylistics , yeah , yeah .

They'll do what I just did .

That's .

Isaac Hayes . No , it's not . It's the dramatics .

All right , who sings ?

this one . Hello baby , I'm gonna rub you down with oil . We're gonna make pretend that we're in the big house , but I was only in a holding cell .

So I ain't got no street cred . All right , let's see , let's see .

Looking back over my years , I guess I shedded some tears . That sounds like Teddy Pendergrass . There you go , teddy , one of the greatest voices in soul or music .

Oh yeah , I had an argument with a black guy one one day , not an argument , um at uh , at some veteran luncheon and I said to him well , if you ask me , teddy has a better voice than marvin . Well , that that that didn't sit too well yeah , but that's that's .

that's not a winnable argument . He doesn't have a better voice , he has a different voice .

I'm just saying , I just think that Teddy had more . Marvin has a great voice and I'm not going to say he's overrated that would be ludicrous to say that but I think and I guess it is a taste thing You're right , it is a taste . But everybody thinks marvin has the greatest voice ever . But there are people that think somebody else has a better voice , like smoky robinson , like that .

Yeah , it's a lot of a lot of personal preference comes in , like who's got a better singing voice in rock ? Paul rogers or , you know , stephen tyler . They're both good singers in their own way . Paul Rogers has more mechanical talent , he can hit certain notes and has a soulfulness of his voice . What Steven does is the same , but different in different areas . Nobody's ever going to win that argument .

This song right here is notorious for people thinking somebody else sings it . You might know it . Let's see , I'll fast forward a little TV antenna in the back . Do it . Do it . You may not have .

That's Curtis .

Mayfield A car at all . Do it , do it . You may not have . That's curtis mayfield . There you go . Nope , that's not curtis mayfield wow , everybody thinks it's curtis mayfield fucking . Everybody is that is that uh pop staples no , it's william devon , oh shit , but everybody thinks that that , uh , what's his name ? Sings it , like you just said yeah , yeah .

But you know , you , you gotta , you gotta , imagine that there's somebody phillips has said curtis mayfield . Perry deader has said curtis mayfield , it's not , it's william devon you gotta , you gotta figure that somebody in that record company and somebody that is producing that record says look , we want , we want a Curtis Mayfield sound here .

I can't say that's not the case , but I just think that I mean so you have , let's go more modern . Let's go more modern . Do you think that the record company said to Scott Whelan hey , we need you to sound like Eddie Vedder ? Yes , no , yes , scott , weedland would not have done that . Yes , they will not . They will not do that , they just have the voice that they have I , yeah , I .

I think that there is some element of the record company , whether it's the producer or the marketing department , that is going to say hey , we got another band that is going to help ride the grunge wave right now . Now I think it's unfair , because I think that stone temple pilots are a much better band .

Rock and roll Hall of Fame Eventually .

I think eventually , I think about corn .

What about corn in the new metal ? New metal starting to kind of rise a little bit from the bottom .

I think eventually I would not hold my breath for corn anytime soon .

They're the Kings of new metal . I know they are , I know they are and I do . Eventually they will have to do it . They will have to put them in .

I do think that they will get in , but I don't think they're getting in anytime soon .

Will the Pet Shop Boys ever get in ? Will they ever get the respect that they deserve Someday ? Really , I don't even see them on fucking ballots .

Someday . But they may get that bullshit award . That is not part of the real induction .

Yeah , all right . Who sings this song ?

Scott Whelan , yeah all right , who sings this song ? Scott wheeling sounds like stevie wonder , nope who do you think sings it ?

Who does it sound like ?

It sounds like a one-hit wonder , so I had a . I think it was on Atlantic Records . It was a woman by the name of Frida Payne , yeah .

Did you fucking Google that ? Yes , I did . I knew you fucking did . I watched your face light up from your screen , dude , I was 32 years in law enforcement . I see and I hear everything . I can't undo that I'm like you , motherfucker . You just googled on on a live stream . Oh see , perry denovich , the perry light fingers . That's the AI , didn't Google .

Free to pay .

King of the 45s Didn't Google , you did it live .

No , no , fred , they all Google free to pay and just shot up on the Google algorithm .

They can't cause . They're watching on their phone , so they most likely can't .

You really think ? You really think that Dave Phillips knew who free to pain was ?

I think Dave Phillips surprisingly probably had the 45 . All right , maybe he's older than us . He's older than us , so he's about five , six , seven , six years older than us .

So I will . I will give him credit for it yeah , let's see you , Dave and Perry .

Yeah , yeah , yo , all right , let's , let's do a couple more of these . These are actually good , um , let's see .

Alright , here we go this is the Temptations again you're right , yeah , yeah this is uh . This is sung by Eddie Kendricks .

No , oh , here we go right there Now . This song was sampled by the great rapper Orange Juice Jones . I saw you yeah you Walking in the rain . I love when .

Spotify has these videos with the song you hold it back . I can't read the artist .

Oh no , I can't read the artist .

I saw't know . I don't know who this is . I don't know who this is , let's see . But by the way , how about credit to dave phillips and perry ? They both had that 45 . Bravo for having a wide range of musical tastes .

Yeah , yeah , dave Phillips isn't . I mean , I don't know how he lived before fucking Matchbox 20 . I don't know how he lived , dave Phillips . I don't know how he survived the 66 years he's been on the planet , or whatever . That song , by the way , way is in the rain by the dramatics . Okay , let me see . I know there's a couple more . Where is it All right ? Well , maybe not . Maybe I'll just kind of move on . Oh , you'll know this one .

Maybe you won't you know what I think heaven is you're not gonna know that .

I think heaven is you this , believe it or not is the ohio players . I wouldn't have got the infamous funk , fire , roller coaster . I love say what . All right , I know there's one more here that I wanted to uh throw at you why do you , why do you hate matchbox 20 so much ? I just think that they're fucking bubble gum . They're , they're , it's , it's mindless music to me yeah I , I don't get , I don't see any um , I don't get anything out of it .

They have some good songs . I like some of their stuff .

No , I mean it's everybody's . Everyone has their own taste , right ? They have a song called .

Bright Lights that I like a lot .

Let's see Come on , uh , come on .

Hey girl , what's your name ?

I think I already did this one . I did , and all right , I'll . I'm going to move on .

So I also . I have this um , I have a list of .

Pull it up . Hey , all right , I'm going to give you six , all right ? First of all , name as three-member bands as you can zz top rush triumph

Ranking Three-Member Bands

.

emerson lincoln palmer uh . Emerson lincoln powell uh , don't google crosby stills nash , yeah , don't Google Crosby Stills Nash , yeah . Who else Did you know ?

Grand Funk was a three .

Galaxy 500 , grand Funk . Who else Cream ? Yep , let's see who else .

There's two big ones , the Police , yeah , the Police , nirvana , yeah , Nirvana . All right , I have a list of seven here and you've touched on some of them . I want you to give me your order of greatness for three member bands . I don't know if you want to write this down , so the list is not necessarily any order . I want Jack's order , you ready , and for the listeners at home , the Police , rush , cream , zz Top , jimi Hendrix , experience , nirvana , crosby , stills and Nash . Give me your list in order of greatness .

Your list in order of greatness Point of clarity what ?

did you put with coffee ? What was that , mark Smith ?

Come on , jack Coffee , what do you ?

put with coffee . Oh , there you go , mark Smith . No cheating , it's an open book test . Patty , I see said Three Dog Night Okay .

I don't know that .

Three Dog Night was . They're not a threesome .

They kind of are .

Todd Sockman . Matchbox 20 , great content Fuck you .

I'm almost done .

Yeah , no problem , no problem . So again for the listeners , the Police , rush , cream , zz Top , jimi Hendrix , experience , nirvana Crosby , stills and Nash . I'm going to get Jack's Order of Greatness and then I'll give you mine .

Okay , I got it All right , so so bear in mind that they haven't given me a lot of time to think about this Again . I made . I made my list based upon how influential and iconic the bands were . Okay , yep , so I'm going Cream , hendrix , nirvana , csn , the Police , rush and ZZ Top , and the bottom two definitely could be switched one way or the other all right , so let's start from the top .

What was your first one ? Again cream . Okay , and you're saying , because of their influence , and even though some argue that they are the creators of heavy metal .

Okay , you know the jazz influence , you know they . They blew the doors . They're just a hugely , hugely influential band . Especially if you talk to musicians , right , talk about how important that band was okay .

What was your second one , hendrix ?

okay again , you know , hugely influential the experience , not jimmy hendrix , not just not , but not band of gypsies , not no . The experience no , jimmy saying they're number two just a hugely influential band , I mean . I mean , you know , think about , how big Hendrix still is .

I can't argue with your list , I'm just okay . No , I'm all right . Yeah , it's like the argument earlier who's got a better voice ? This is going to be your list . I can't dog it either way . So what's number three , nirvana ?

Wow In terms of their influence nirvana nirvana is a huge , huge fucking band okay , all right , yeah , number four I mean , I mean , think about it . Kurt cobain was called the voice of a generation okay , now again , I , I'm , I .

I can only be surprised , I can't argue with you .

Unfortunately , unfortunately I mean , that was number four , that was number four no , that was number three . I mean , I mean , think about it , never mind . And I , and I in all honestly I just looked at this Just never mind . That album has sold 30 million copies .

That's fucking huge . I have to say there's other than reasons why it's at 30 million , but okay .

Why I think ?

based off it's a great album number one . I think based off it's a great album number one . But number two , the when he killed himself , record sales went through the fucking roof . Of course they always do so . That's an other than factor . These people weren't buying that album before he killed himself . Um number three is um , videos , etc . You know Number three is videos , et cetera . You know that factors into record sales .

Yeah , you're absolutely right . Their videos were influential on a generation . They call Smell Like Teen Spirit . That video is one of the greatest videos . Oh , it's one of the greatest videos .

I know exactly where it was when I first saw it . It's one of the greatest videos . Oh , it's one of the greatest videos . I know exactly where it was when I first saw it . It's one of those videos . I was at the Black Angus bar and nightclub in Sacramento and that shit came up on the video screen because in the early 90s , bars had video screens . And that was yeah , perry Lightfingers Dedevich the AI as long as Rush is at the bottom .

They're close to the bottom of my list and I love Rush .

That was number three . What's number four for you ?

Crosby , Stills , Nash .

Okay , number five .

The Police .

Number six .

Do you want to know why ? The Police , I think , is a little further down the list , I think , obviously a huge band , very influential . I don't think that their legacy has aged well . I don't think people recognize the genius of the Police like they should .

Bob Doucette says Nirvana not even the best , like they should . Bob Doucette says Nirvana not even the best grunge band .

This is a three-person band , yeah but regardless , is Nirvana the greatest grunge band . I would venture to guess , bob Doucette , that if you went to 100 people and said name three grunge bands , 99 of them are gonna say pearl , uh are gonna say nirvana first yeah they , they I'm not saying that you know what you're saying that they're not the best grunge band . Maybe they're not , but you know , it's like the whole marvin gaye thing that we were talking about . It's personal opinion .

Yeah , I mean they were the face of grunge , yeah . You know , to think that Eddie Vedder is the only . So if you have the father , the son and the Holy Ghost , you know the Holy Trinity of grunge . What would you say it is ?

For me it's Nirvanairvana , pearl jam and sound garden , you know , with alice in chains coming up really close behind I'd say nirvana , uh , alice in chains and pearl jam yeah I and I love sound , but I was a big alice in fan . But think about this for a second . Nirvana never mind has sold 30 million albums worldwide to date . Never mind that Now hold on . Pearl Jam has sold 85 million albums their entire catalog .

Yeah , no again , I'm not . I like all of them . I like all of them . I never got sick of all of them . I never got sick of nirvana . I never got sick of pearl jam . I never got sick of any of them I stopped listening to them at a certain point , because my tastes change and I go listen to music but I never turn them off like I . Well , I I mean I won't .

It depends on the mood , but yeah I know I like a lot of the stuff that wasn't as popular , like you know Screaming Trees and Mudhoney . Yeah , yeah , you know there's some really , really great stuff there . Yeah , you know , even some of the punky stuff that influenced grunge , you know , like the Melvins or Husker Du .

Yeah , the lesser known .

Yeah , and I'm not saying that who's could do were grunge , but they were definitely the precursors , as were the pixies .

You know , even jane's addiction had an influence on grunge yeah , yep , uh , so you had , you had the police at number five or six that was number one .

Two , three , four . That was number five , but five who's number six , zz top okay .

And number seven rush wow , and I and I could .

I could switch russian in zz top right , all right .

My list number one for three , for three I .

I think they're brilliant . Wait , wait , wait , just give me your list number one is crosby stills and nash .

Okay , I I can't think that there's another three-person band that was that had more hits and was more influential and had that lasting effect . It's still today . Crosby Stills and Nash can be played . I mean , how much Hendrix do you really hear today ? And I'm only going by longevity . I think their songs just have more longevity and they were fucking great . They were three of the greatest artists of their time . Longevity and they were fucking great . They were three of the greatest artists of their time . You know , steven stills came from a fucking extremely successful band that was a hit machine , a money machine in the hollies , and just decided I'm gonna go to california . So he took in the hollies . Never really they did , but they didn't after he left right yeah , yeah so we can go on with all that .

My number two is cream . Okay , because , uh , I mean just the masterful fucking musicians that they were number one . I don't know how . That's why those three egos did not last that long together so you don't have .

If you don't Cream , you don't have Led Zeppelin .

Okay , yeah , you're not going to get any argument out of me for that Number three . I got to say in their short run of what five albums I got to say the police had a huge , huge influence on music in such a short span of time , considering that they were in the video age . And I mean they , they just had , and again , three brilliant musicians almost like cream light almost like cream light .

You know what I mean . Yeah , you could compare those , those , those musicians , kind of ginger baker , you know , stewart copeland type thing , right ? Uh , number four I have rush rush owned a fucking country , albeit a small country , where they owned a fucking country like a three-man band , and they still own that country yeah , but it's influential in prog rock . I mean , prog rock is a what ?

is is ? Is the fact that they still own that country because they were so great and they were yeah , or or because there's a lack of talent up in canadia ?

I don't think there is a lack of talent up there .

I think they have . I'm making a joke .

I'm making a joke . It wasn't funny if you made me answer it .

Try to roll with me .

Your joke has to be funny for me .

We're already past an hour . I'm running out . No , we're not .

We're at 58 minutes and 53 seconds . Hang in there . Hang in there , old man . Yeah , I know , because you're so busy right before the 4th of July , I'm sure July 3rd you're going to be in the office tearing it up .

I'm swamped . I have a 6.30 tea time tomorrow morning .

Anyway , anyway . So I have the police at number three , I have Rush at number four . At number five , the Jimi Hendrix experience . For obvious reasons , number six . This was begrudgingly , but I put ZZ Top at number six , and you know how much I love ZZ Top .

Just so fucking steady and consistent and unique and I don't know how influential they really were , because they were so unique in what they did and how they did it . You know what I mean ? They were kind of a standalone in that . Who do you compare them to , right ? You really there's nobody to compare them to . For a lot of their time they were , you know they were a Texas blues boogie band they owned , the Texasas blues like in that sense right , I mean the talent again , the fucking loaded with talent and three people yeah so number six and number seven .

I had to put nirvana at number seven okay , yeah , I could not put them ahead of any of these bands that came before them . I really couldn't .

I don't think you can make the argument . You know Nirvana . I mean , they had such a short run and who knows how long they would have been able to sustain what they had done . But I think in the let's play rock and Roll Hall of Fame , if you have to induct a band off this list , nirvana is getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before ZZ Top is .

ZZ Top's not in yet .

No , they're in .

Yeah , not so .

Yeah .

But Nirvana , I mean , look not , I can't take anything away from uh . Perry denovich says . I gotta say I was surprised by both selections . Really cool , all right , that's yeah . That's kind of how we think about .

I'd like to know perry's order . Not that I'm questioning him , and I appreciate his unbiased diplomatic comment .

So Mark Smith , music relish guru , said Black Flag had a huge influence on grunge too . Yep , yep , absolutely so . If you're listening and these are the I don't know if you I'm curious to Perry and Mark and whoever's listening to Perry and Mark and whoever's listening what their list would be out of the Police , rush , cream , zz Top , jimi Hendrix , experience , nirvana , crosby , stills and Nash . I'd be curious if they want to comment in with their list . Anybody that's listening , put your list up . Moving Pictures is their only good album for like .

Todd . So todd sarkman like you're supposed to say .

Who's there like ? Who taught you how to write ? This guy was the chief of police who taught you how to how to write . If you're making a comment , you need to put the subject matter in there . Moving pictures is russia's only good album . Their is too general All right . Mark Smith adds a band that's not in the fucking list . Okay , here we go .

Well , look at Steve Stevens . He says that the Yodbird should be first . They weren't a three-piece .

Yeah , we're talking three-piece band , we're talking three members .

And Todd Sogman , Moving Pictures is their only good album . It's a ridiculous statement , Well he's a ridiculous man . That's the only album that you like . It's the only one he knows which is fine , which is fine . It's the only one he knows , but Rush has some tremendous albums .

Their musicianship is amazing .

They don't move you , so that's cool . Not everybody's a Rush fan .

Let's see Mark Smith , of course . Course he's going to add a group , because there's always one person in the fucking audience wants to add don't go with what we're giving you . Uh , you got to add . So he says I would put elp near the top simply because , know , we might have touched on this maybe I talked to mark and lou about this at one point um , the bands with the most band members , and this is over time yeah , we've talked about this we have .

Okay , I'm going to give you one , two , three , four , five , six , seven , eight , nine , ten it's like 11 or 12 bands , and we're going to start with acdc . Over time , how many band members has acdc had ?

uh , I , I'm gonna guess and say 11 20 .

Right , okay , blue oyster cult , which you know what I so I heard something the other day . I want these real saying best band names and I always loved band names . I always love romeo , void , psychedelic furs , I always loved those names , the smiths , you know , uh , those are just great band names , right , this blue ? Blue oyster cult is a pretty fucking cool name if you break it down . We hear it so much growing up that you never really took the name into consideration . But blue oyster cult is a pretty cool fucking name . How many band members have they had over time Blue Oyster Cult ?

So I'm going to say 15 .

22 . King Crimson . How many band members have King Crimson had ?

28 .

All right , mark Smith is just being he's that guy . Tonight have King Crimson had 28 . All right , mark Smith is just being he's that guy . Tonight he comments in Cream ELP , crosby , stills and Nash Rush Police ELP .

Fucking asshole . Maybe , hey , maybe , he's being kidnapped and he just can't type H .

Oh , you just got some gasoline doused on you by Big Head Todd the Wet Sprocket . Hey Jack , there are no wrong answers here , as Scott

Band Member Count Records

likes to say .

Do you know where Blue Oyster Cult got their name ?

I think I've heard it before , but I forget .

Their manager had written a poem and used that phrase . It doesn't really have any meaning . Part of the Blue Oyster Cult . If they had the at the , it doesn't really have any meaning .

Part of the blue oyster cut . If they had that at the beginning it would change the whole dynamic of the name the blue oyster , the blue oyster cult .

But anyway uh , I , I think I answered this . What did I say ? 28 interrupted 28 , 22 oh shit , that's what I was gonna . I think that's what I said earlier . I don't know Big .

Head Todd interrupted 28 . 22 . Oh shit , that's what I was going to . I think that's what I said earlier . How many band members ?

over time has Hart had 30 . 29 . Oh off by one .

How many band members over time has Jethro Tull had ?

33 .

23 . I'm not going in chronological order 23 . How many . This one surprised me . How many band members over time has black sabbath had ?

uh , all right , I'm gonna try to put a little thought into this one how many band members over time has black sabbath had ?

I was shocked .

I'm gonna , I'm to say 12 .

27 .

What .

I'm just saying that's what it said . They have had 27 members from the beginning to the end . I don't know . I'm just saying Leonard Skinner . How many band members has Leonard Skinner had over time ? 28 . Steve Stevens keeps guessing six . He just keeps writing six . How many has ? Was it Leonard Skinner ? How many have they had ? 28 . 27 . How many band members has Quiet Riot had over the years ?

Jesus Christ . Right , I know All right , so I'm going to say 19 .

27 again . How many band members over time has Whitesnake had ?

26 .

41 . 41 . 41 members of that band over time . Ah , let me see . Uh-oh . Steve Stevensvens , I can list them . You are referring to fake news about black sabbath , okay ?

I , I know , yeah , you know what you know . What steve is not factoring in is they went through that period in the 80s where they had just a uh , rotating cast of characters .

I'm looking at it right now Just to go out on the road as Black Sabbath . Yeah , yeah , yeah See , Steve Stevens , don't you ever question milk crates and turntables again ?

How many members have been in milk crates and turntables ?

Let me see One . Do you know how many ?

It depends how you classify it , including me , including me .

How many people have been on this show ? More than one show ?

I'm going to say 12 . No .

It's been other than me , uh , it's five with me . So I had tom spalone came on for a little while , mark's friend , and then mark and lou came on , and then you , you came back well , what about ?

I thought you had talon a couple of times no , he's just did call-ins .

He was never a , you think I can fucking deal with that official . An official unpaid you want to you want to talk . It's people . It will either fucking it the the viewers will go to zero or they'll go to a thousand . If he's on just out of fascination , could be dave phillips , king of the 45s . Good night , it's . It's 8 30 . He's got to go to bed . Yeah , so do I . This is the last one . This is the last one . How many band members through time has santana had ?

45 , 68 , that doesn't surprise me .

That's insane . He always has a big ensemble with them anyways , doesn't he ? Yeah , that doesn't surprise me . Yeah , you know them . Latin bands Can't just be two , like Cheech and Chong . No , all right , here we go . I've been on for a whole episode . No , he hasn't . Steve Stevens is naming how many listeners ? Okay , yeah , that's his Steve Stevens . Jack , you are right , but I don't consider the fake representatives for Black Sabbath to be real news . But , thank you , and he is a diehard Sabbath fan from the beginning .

Is he going ? Steve , are you going over to Birmingham ? I don't know . Did you hear about that last show that they're doing ? What a fucking lineup uh , I hate santana .

I give their album , I give albums away , fucking santana albums . Uh , I , I haven't . I've seen all the drama . They pulled a band and someone's arguing with sharon osborne and there's this . That and I'm I don't fucking care at this point .

Yeah , but have you looked at the ? So it's obviously Black Sabbath , right , ozzy doing some solo stuff . But then , in addition , it's Metallica Guns N' Roses , slayer Tool , pantera , gajera , hailstorm , alice in Chains , lama , god , anthrax , mastodon and a super group consisting of Billy Corgan , david Jamin , duff , mckagan , fred Durst , jonathan Davis , wolfgang Van Halen although I think he pulled out and Tom Morello .

That's a great band . I like that band . I would go just to see that band .

Yeah .

Because they're all friends . All right , buddy , that band , yeah , because they're all friends . Hey , buddy , get off the show . Goodbye everybody fucking .

Well , hey , jack , have a very safe and happy fourth of july .

Yes , don't play with fireworks yeah , yeah , go go light off some bottle rockets , stick them up your ass get off the .

You stick them up , no , you stick them up , get off the show . He's off the show . No , you stick him up , get off the show . He's off the show . He's done . Good night , jack . Wait , he's still fucking . No , he's gone . Okay , all right . Well , that's it everybody . That's it .

I would do this day in music , but I have to go . It's 830 . I got to go to bed ? No , I don't , I . But you know , as I always say , thanks for watching , thanks for listening . If you like it , share it . This is a pretty good episode . If you didn't like it , well , thanks for watching or listening .

For an hour and 13 minutes , patty Yossi's had a great show . Have a wonderful 4th of July to everybody . You too . Patricia and Steve Stevens , my brother , my

Closing Thoughts and July 4th Wishes

brother , mark Smith I love Mark Smith . And Barry Dedevich , my buddies . Big Head , todd the wet sprocket he's a pain in my ass but I love him . Bob Doucette , music man , the Joker , my buddy . I can go down the list , but I want everybody to have a good , happy , safe 4th of July . Me and Dr Vero will be up in the beautiful St Augustine . They have an amazing 4th of July . Great show . Jack Fucking Mark Smith . Ah , the beautiful . Tiffany Van Hill Did I say the beautiful ? Even her name is beautiful . I'm just saying that she's my friend . I can say that that's all there is to it . The beautiful Tiffany Van Hill said goodnight , happy Independence Day . See how proper she is . She doesn't say happy 4th of July , she says happy Independence Day . She's very proper . Yes and yes , tiffany , I won't be there , of course , on Friday . I don't know who I won't be there , of course , on friday .

I don't , I don't know who's gonna be there , um , but I'll see you next week when I get back , yep , heading to the beautiful saint augustine , although it's supposed to be a little rainy , but I don't , I love it up there and I will be back next thursday . We'll be back on schedule . I don't know if jack will be here , but , uh , I'll have somebody . Maybe , or maybe it's just me , but again , I just want to say thank you and , as I always say , doing the show for you , to quote my favorite artist , morrissey , the pleasure , the privilege is mine and I will see you , and you will hear me and you will see me next week .
