Healing doesn't just mean going gluten-free after a celiac disease diagnosis. It's about rebuilding your health step-by-step, from the inside out, and on today's episode I'm talking about the reasons why it's important to heal after a celiac disease diagnosis and some of the ways that we can do that, and I'm going to be including five reasons that could be stopping your body from healing also. Now, for those of us with celiac disease, the most important part about healing is to heal the villi, which are the small little finger-like projections that absorb the nutrients from our food and they are located in our small intestine. So once we heal those, there is such an amazing flow on effect from the benefits from doing so. But many people struggle to heal their villi, and there's a number of reasons for that, which we'll talk about shortly. Healing also means correcting any nutrient deficiencies that you may have had in the lead up to your celiac diagnosis. It also means that your gut is less inflamed and your microbiome is rebalancing. Healing also means that symptoms like brain fog or fatigue or inflammation go away or starting to at least improve. Healing also means you're feeling stronger, you're more resilient and you have more energy as well, and I also like to think that a huge part of healing is that you no longer fear food and you feel comfortable in the way that you start to eat, living gluten-free and focusing on a healthy, balanced, gluten-free diet.
Speaker 1:Now, as I always like to tell people, healing is a very, very unique journey. I cannot even begin to tell you how many people have either emailed me or messaged me, reached out to me and asked me how long it's going to take them to heal. It's not a one size fits all, unfortunately, and some people do take longer than others for various reasons. Some people take a short amount of time, depending on how much damage had happened prior to their diagnosis, and some people take longer, and it's okay. It is okay to take longer. It's just. We are all on our own path and, like I said, there's different reasons for it and there could be things holding you back from healing faster. But on today's episode, I just wanted to share five very simple ones that could be holding you back from your healing journey.
Speaker 1:Now, the first one I think you already know what I'm going to say, and it is gluten exposure. So if you are somehow getting gluten into your diet whether it's tiny trace amounts or you're accidentally getting gluten or, you know, maybe you're not as strict as you need to be, then your body is not going to heal. Your body is not going to have that chance to heal if you are constantly putting under this pressure. So it's a hundred percent important to get on top of your gluten-free diet, cross-contact everything that you consuming, from medications to supplements, to any you know, sports, protein powders all of the things, all of the things that you're consuming you need to make sure are safe, gluten-free options for you. You need to look after yourself in your own kitchen, in your work environment. When you eat out advocating for yourself, you need to make sure that there is no gluten sneaking in because, like I said, if you've got any gluten sneaking in, that will not give your body the chance to heal. It's going to affect the villi, it's going to have all these ongoing problems from there. So that is key number one.
Speaker 1:The next one, unfortunately, is many people rely too much on gluten-free packaged foods. I know, I know. They're convenient, they're easy, many of them are delicious and are great comfort foods, but they're not doing you any favors. Your body does not thrive on food that is full of seed oils and fake ingredients. Your body thrives on whole foods, so natural foods, things that came from the earth plants, seeds, nuts, protein from animals there's so many things that we can eat that don't have a gluten-free label on it, and they are the things that nourish us, they are the things that heal us and they are the foods that will make you feel the best. So, you know, look at your diet, look at what you're consuming, and that could be playing a big part in slowing down your healing and your recovery, for sure.
Speaker 1:And the next one is you could be missing out on key nutrients. So, because of celiac disease impairing your gut, your body may not be absorbing the nutrients that it needs. So this can take a little bit of time for some people. But if you're not, you know, if you're not eating a broad diet of healthy food, then how is your body meant to get any of those nutrients in healthy food? Then how is your body meant to get any of those nutrients in? So you need to make sure that you are eating those key nutrients so that your body will start to heal and start to thrive, because this affects so many things, from your mood, your energy and your recovery.
Speaker 1:Another reason could be you are not supporting your gut repair. So if you have just literally changed from eating a standard diet to a gluten free diet and that's all you've done, that is not enough. That is not enough to repair your gut. So you need to dig deeper and focus on you know lots of different things that can help repair your gut, from things like probiotics to prebiotics and fiber. There's lots and lots of things that we can do to support our gut. So if you haven't been supporting your gut, that is definitely something to focus on as well. And then the last one, which is a big problem that we see.
Speaker 1:I personally had this in the beginning as well, and it is not having the support that you need to live with celiac disease from the right person. So, unfortunately, it is not uncommon for people to go to a dietician or a doctor and not get the support that they need. I am one of the many people that this happened to. My doctor told me to just eat gluten-free. If you have been here for a while, you've heard my story. Just go eat gluten-free. Go to my gastroenterologist. He didn't give me any advice. He just told me to go see a dietitian. The dietitian was useless, unfortunately yes, there's amazing dietitians. Unfortunately, I was lumped with one that was useless. Sat there on his computer, googled cel disease, printed me out a useless handout that I wish I still had. It was so bad. I'd love to show everyone how bad of a handout that was.
Speaker 1:So back then I didn't have the support. I had to become my support person. I had to step up and I was the one that had to learn how to heal myself, what to do to be able to live with celiac disease and thrive. I became a health coach and that was pivotal in my healing, and now that is exactly what I do for other women is.
Speaker 1:I support those of you with celiac disease that want to thrive, not just, you know, kick by every single day and struggle. I help women with celiac disease to feel their best version of themselves. So if you would like to find out more about how I can support you with that, I have a variety of different options, but I think the most tailored one with the most hands-on support is the Healthy Celiac Collective. So you can jump on the wait list for that over at Belinda Whelancom forward slash collective, and you'll find out very soon about the next round, and I'd love you to join me in that so I can support you further. But otherwise I hope this episode has given you some little insights on what could be holding you back from healing and feeling your best. So thank you so much for tuning in and I look forward to talking with you again on next week's episode. So have a great week. Talk to you then, take care Bye.
