#26: NFL TE comparison, who's the GOAT of the unsung heroes of skill players?
In this episode we'll do another variant of player comparisons, this one covering the TE position. Until recent years, it's been mostly a blocking and a few catches here and there. Then the rise of these candidates made it to the fact where TEs became the most un-guardable position in offense: too fast for LBs, and too big for safeties and corners.
We felt the 4 main ones in the conversation where Antonio Gates, Rob Gronkowski, Shannon Sharpe, and Tony Gonzalez. Each have had decade long careers (Gronk is now back and maybe even extending it) and were dominant in their own rights.
Follow along as we take a look at the stats, the reasoning and other advanced metrics that no one seems to talk about (like the "eye test" and who changed the game the most), to see who we come up with as well as our subjective opinion on these 3 influential guys who crossed over the same era.
So who are you in on? Relive some of the best games/highlights for each of them:
- Tony Gonzalez
- Shannon Sharpe
- Record breaking game, most yards for TE ever in a game (214 yards and 2 TDs at the end of his career)
- Big time TD with Ravens in AFC Championship game
- Rob Gronkowski
- YACs
- One of the most clutch games in Simsinator's opinion. 2016 AFC Championship, last Peyton vs. Brady game, where Gronk had 8 catches, 144 yards, and TD including 2 huge 4th down snags.
- Antonio Gates
