Ozymandias is a sonnet written by the English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1817.
It was first published in The Examiner on January 11, 1818, under the pen name Glirastes.
The poem was inspired by the Greek name for the Egyptian pharaoh Ramesses II, known as Ozymandias, and was part of a friendly poetry competition with fellow poet Horace Smith, who also wrote a poem titled Ozymandias on the same subject.
