In Georgia, to which the Devil went down, it is illegal to let your donkey hang out in a bathtub.  This law was passed in the 1920s, after an unfortunate incident in Arizona.  A donkey, peacefully slumbering in his farmer’s old bathtub, had to be rescued when a dam burst, causing the town to flood, and his “bed” to float downstream.  No word on the farmer, but the donkey was okay.  The incident caused such a ruckus that word spread and several states passed laws against the keeping of donkeys in bathtubs.  Another Georgia law, which may or may not be related to the Donkey Incident, commands you to please always supervise your wandering mules.

When in Baltimore, try to visit the waterfront neighborhood of Fells Point, which has a rich maritime history.  In the late 1700s, early 1800s, the Fells Point Shipping Yard (which no longer exists) built over 800 ships, mostly topsail schooners which were renowned for their speed and handling. During the War of 1812, they supported privateers who went to war against the British.

Just south of Worcester, MA, near the Connecticut border, lies Lake Webster, also known as Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg.  This 1,442 acre lake features two marinas, a bunch of little islands (some habitable, some not), and for obvious reasons attracts a lot of tourists.

We don’t even have a job to fill anymore in Massachusetts; I just couldn’t resist keeping that tidbit.

This little bit of history involves both NJ and NY. In the early 1900s, there was a cruise ship called the SS Morro Castle, which would take passengers between NY and Havana.  On the night of September 7, 1934, the captain was acting strangely, and took his dinner in his room.  Shortly thereafter, he was found dead, slumped over in his bathtub.  Later that night, in the wee hours of September 8, while the vessel was traveling along the Jersey shore toward New York Bay, a fire broke out in the storage closet.  Chaos ensued. Rescue ops commenced, but over 130 passengers and crew perished.  The burning ship eventually came to a stop near the Convention Hall in Asbury Park.  Imagine being at this upbeat, happening seaside touristy area, and suddenly along the coastline you see this huge, blackened, smoldering ship.  It was there for a few months until they towed it away for scrap.

Down now to North Carolina, where in the Outer Banks, you can see (but not go near!) wild horses - specifically Colonial Spanish Mustangs - which have been roaming the islands since the Middle Ages!  They were brought over by explorers in the 1520s.  Some say that the original herd swam ashore from shipwrecks; some say they were abandoned as a result of failed settlements.

And now, in the “Don’t give up on your dreams” category:  Did you know that The Warner Brothers (yes, the actual Warner siblings) got their start leasing the Cascade Theater in New Castle, Pennsylvania from 1906 to 1907. They borrowed chairs from a nearby funeral home.  Understandably, they had to cancel screenings and bring back the chairs whenever someone died.
