We closed off last time by considering what the Bible means when it talks about being attached to the world and how a couple of verses from 1 John where really helpful.
For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
(1 John 2: 16-17)

It talks about the lust of the flesh, which is living for pleasure, sensual pleasures. It talks about the lust of the eye. Living for possessions materialism. It also talks about the pride of life, the sinful temptation for power and control over other people. This is all about the posture of the heart, are we inclined towards the world, or are we inclined towards the Lord.

We know we are supposed to be different than the world, absolutely But, what does that mean, does it mean we should stop doing certain things. Would you like to know what the Bible really means when it says you're supposed to be different than the world? Turn to Philippians, Philippians chapter 2 Paul tells us what it means to be different from the world 

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil his good purpose.. Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky. as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labour in vain”.
(Phil 2: 12-16)

Paul says look, you live in a crooked and twisted world, so this is how to live differently. Try not to grumble of complain about other believers complain, don’t apply a standards to other people, maybe even to other Christians try first to focus on putting your own house in order. The situation Paul was engaging with was one where a whole bunch of Christians were constantly complaining and were always disputing with each other.

Alright back to Genesis chapter 19. Lot has just been warned to get out of town because God is about to judge the city of Sodom, so, let's pick up the story in verse 15
We're now going to look at the deliverance of Lot.

15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.” “When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them”.
(Genesis 19: 15-16)

They were told get out of town because God is going to judge this place, but they lingered they didn't want to go, and they had to be literally dragged out of town  They are clearly emotionally and spiritually attached to Sodom, and you can only imagine  what that meant. For us as well there might be stuff in our lives, attachments to wordily things. Unhelpful habits, maybe even addictions maybe even inappropriate relationships. Which means we are leaving God out of those parts of our life. God may be metaphorically saying to you, get out of that place. Move away from that place to a new place.

In this story we see they hesitated, and they lingered because they still longed to stay in Sodom, they pull of the world was strong for them. God tells Lot he's going to judge and destroy the city and they still have to be dragged out, which is an indication of just how strong their attachment to that city was. I also wish you to notice in these verses that God is still being merciful in bringing them out. Did they deserve to be delivered, No, not really!  However,  the Lord is merciful even to worldly backslidden believers 

“As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”
(Gen 19: 17)

Now he's given him some very specific instructions get out of town that's don’t look back. When the fire and brimstone comes down and if you're too close you might be destroyed also. Flee to the mountains lest you be destroyed also. Will they do what God says, we will find out in the next episode.
