As I said I the last episode this is where it starts to get interesting. Let’s pick up the text in verse 18.

But Lot said to them, “No, my lords, please! Your servant has found favour in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I can’t flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”  He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar.)

The point is he saying I don't want to go to the mountains I could be killed there. Are you kidding me did you read what has already happened to this man in his life? Remember the Kings from the East that came down and attacked him and Abraham delivered him from the Kings. God delivered him from the Kings and in this chapter,  remember also that God has just delivered him from the mob also. The Angels took him by the back of the neck and pulled him back into the house he could have been killed by the mob and now he's worried about going to the mountains. Lot has the exact opposite attitude to Abraham because lot is infected with the world. He's leaving God out of the equation, if he had taken God into consideration, he would have listened to the Lord and he would have believed that the Lord could save him in the mountains, and he would have done what God said. He would have run to the hills, but he's still leaving God out of his thinking, and he is heading to a nearby smaller town called Zoar. God said to him, see I have favoured you concerning this, so hurry escaped there for I cannot do anything until you arrive there  By the way the Angel says I can't do anything till you get there. God is going to protect him in spite of himself which I think is an incredible testimony to the grace and mercy of God. In verse 23 continues the story.

“By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. Then the Lord rained down burning sulphur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. Thus, he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land”.

So, the Lord destroyed the cities of the plane, earlier in Genesis we were told there were five cities of the planet he has destroyed four of the five. It says the Lord rained fire and brimstone (KJV) Sodom and Gomorrah  Now let's talk about the fire and brimstone. Was that a natural phenomenon? Some say this is an earthquake or volcano eruption may be including an earthquake maybe also including lightning. God could have done it all by natural means, but I think the tenor of the way this is described is that is talking about a supernatural event. It is also said to have rained down from heaven, so I don't think that sound like an earthquake to me. I think this describes an exceptional never to be repeated the event illustrating the fiery judgement of God that will come upon the wicked. 

According to second Peter chapter 2 this is also an illustration of that future judgement, and he compares that future occurrence with the twin calamities of Noah and the flood and Sodom and Gomorrah to illustrate this. Jesus also, when he teaches of the suddenness of the coming of the Son of Man, and He refers to both of these events in Luke chapter 17 to illustrate the suddenness with which the Son of Man is going to appear. So, this is a supernatural destruction of Sodom Gomorrah and two other cities. I’ll say something more about this and their location in the next episode.
