As we saw last time God stepped in and destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and Brimstone and Lot and his family flee. I wish that were the end of the Story but for Lot and his family things will degenerate further  It degenerates into almost unimaginable sin. Look at verse 30.

Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. One day the older daughter said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children—as is the custom all over the earth. Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father.”

(Gen 19: 30-32)

Lot didn't have sons he just has us daughters and the daughters hatch this plan. The text continues.

That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Last night I slept with my father. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father.” So, they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again, he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up. So, both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father. The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[g]; he is the father of the Moabites of today. 38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[h]; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

When you leave God out even if you know the Lord there is no end to where you could end up, and this is a horrific illustration of that both of these daughters became pregnant and had sons that became ancestors of nations. These sons were the progenitors of the Moabites and the Amorites thus the story ends. It important to understand that these family lines are never mentioned again in the book of Genesis except to point out that they end up in a war with Israel. We also find out later that the Moabites and the Amorites will eventually be the ones who seduce the nation of  Israel by introducing them to Baal worship. Thereby, introducing Israel to unbelievable religious perversions. We see by Jeremiah chapter 48 that the Moabites and the Amorites have mingled with the descendants of Ishmael [The Arab Nations] and settle in what is today modern Jordan. Again, that demonstrates the danger of worldliness in the life of the believer.

Lot lost his life wife and also lost his spiritual life and ended up with two daughters pregnant buy him. I started by suggesting that living in the world could be dangerous spiritually and we see here that leaving God out can even lead you into all kinds of problems. To sum this up. God delivered Lot from Sodom, just before he judged it, but Sodom influence carried on in Lots family. That's the point, the danger, of living in the world is becoming so worldly that it might not only lead to physical death but to spiritual death for you and your offspring. 

Back in Genesis 13:10 Lot chose to go and live near Sodom after he was given the 1st choice by Abram. In verse 1 he had he moved his tent to the edge of the city, by verse 12 he sat at the gate of the city. By Genesis Ch 19:he is one of the judges in the city and has an important role in the administration and possibility the leadership of the city. Later he ends up fleeing as Sodom’s destruction looms. By the end of the chapter, he has ended living with his daughters in a cave. Lot already knew what sort of a place Sodom was, he had seen the men of the town were little more than murderous rapists. Yet he’s still hesitant to leave that place.

One of the things that this story requires people to ask themselves is, are you in a place that’s so bad that you should leave? If you are in a place that’s so bad that you should leave, then leave immediately, because there’s no time to waste. Don’t have any nostalgia for a catastrophic situation. When you leave a bad situation wash the dust off your feet, and you don’t look back. That’s a very firm lesson.

 The idea of necessity for immediate action is echoed in the New Testament. These are some of the harsher words that Christ said. This is from Matthew 8. Christ is addressing a multitude and asking people to follow him.

“Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” It seems like a perfectly reasonable request, “But Jesus said unto him, follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

(Matthew 12:21-22)

It means that there’s no excuses, whatsoever, for not getting up and getting out. People are prone to use dysfunctional situations as an excuse for not doing what they should be doing. Reasons pile up, day after day, to not do what you should do. You can put them off indefinitely because the demands of the day will always allow you to do that. But these stories say a ‘when you leave somewhere terrible behind, do not look back.  There’s should be no nostalgia for a destructive past, this is about the letting the dead parts of yourself go. There is no excuse for not getting out of a situation where you have no hope of not getting to where God wants you to be. 

Genesis 19 illustrates how far it is possible to depart from God's will in your life particularly if you keep making worldly decisions. But what if you do that, is there any way back again. We shall find out in the next episode.
