Okay, welcome everyone to our latest episode in my history of philosophy. Now, let's be clear, I don't claim to be a philosopher, I just happen to be a retired Christian minister who is studying philosophy at the moment, and as I do that course and spend those time, and spend the time attending the study group, I am posting periodically reactions and my understanding of what I've learned in the light of Christian theology. So this is an episode where the where we're still in the pre-Socratic world, and that world becomes even stranger. Maybe more imaginative and certainly more intellectually daring. You'll remember if you've been with me last time, the episode was about the great clash between flux and permanence. This one is about the thinkers who tried to pick up the pieces, and in doing so created some of the most fascinating ideas in the history of philosophy. Because after Heraclitus and his river and Parmenides and his rock, the ancient world was left with a problem. How do you make sense of the universe that seems to change when reason insists that change isn't possible? So enter our three remarkable figures we're going to look at today, each brilliant in their own way, each eccentric in their own way, and each offering a different way forward. Today we'll be looking at Zeno Aveleia, the master of paradox. He's the man who was Parmenides' loyal disciple and the inventor of what some call philosophical mischief. Zini was the man who looked at the world and he saw people walking, running, throwing javelins, and calmly said, You know, you can't actually do any of those things. None of them are actually happening. His paradoxes, famously Achilles and the Tortoise, the Flying Arrow and the Race, are so clever that mathematics still discuss them today, and they're still used to confuse school children in their mathematic classes to this very day. Zeno is the philosopher who, in a sense, weaponized logic to show that our everyday experiences of motion all collapse under scrutiny. He's the first philosopher to make the world feel like a glitch in the matrix. We'll also look at Empedocles, the poet, magician, and scientist. He is one of the most colourful figures in antiquity, a poet, a healer, and a political reformer, and if legend is to be believed, the man who tried to prove his divinity by leaping into a volcano. Empedocles offers us a grand imaginative solution to the problem of change. It was, he said, the four roots earth, air, fire, and water, combined and then separated by two underlying cosmic forces, love which unites, and strife which divides. It's a mythic and a scientific view all mixed together. Is it poetry disguised as physics or is it physics disguised as poetry? Well, I don't know, but it was the first attempt to explain change without denying permanence. Then we'll consider Anaxagoras, the philosopher who introduced the concept of the mind. The thinker who brought something entirely new into the conversation. Naus, the mind. For Anaxagoras, the universe is not just matter swirling around, it is ordered by an intelligent principle, a cosmic mind that sets all things in motion and then arranges them with purpose. This is one of the most important ideas of the pre-Socratic world, and it is the first philosophical position that suggests overtly that the cosmos might be intelligent because it is the product of intelligence. Later Christian thinkers will hear in this the beginnings of a truth that we hold dear, that behind creation stands a mind, a logos, a creator. This episode is where the pre-Socratics begin to build bridges between reason and experience, between unity and diversity, between matter and mind, as well as between the mythic imagination and the scientific explanation. Zeno will challenge our assumptions. Empedocles might expand our imagination, and Anaxagoras can elevate our understanding. And together they prepare the ground for the next great movement in philosophy, one that will culminate in Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. But for now, let's step into the world of paradoxes, cosmic forces, and the first philosophical vision of a universe shaped by intelligence. Welcome and let's begin. First, we look at Zeno Aveleia, the man who challenged motion and in doing so nearly broke mathematics. If Parmenides is the philosopher who froze the universe, then Zeno of Alea is the man who tried to make sure nobody ever thought it out again. He is the loyal disciple who looked at his master's radical claim that nothing changes and said, right, let me prove it by confusing absolutely everyone. Zeno is the inventor of the famous paradox. Not the cute kind of statement you see on the bumper sticker or the side of a coffee mug. This is the kind of paradox that makes mathematicians sweat to this day and runners give up racing in despair. He actually wrote 40 of them, but sadly we only have a handful left that have survived. However, some would say that they're probably his best because they survived by entering the public imagination. Paradox 1, Achilles and the Tortoise, the race that no one wins. So let me begin with probably his most famous paradox, Achilles and the Tortoise. But let me try and update it in explaining it. Imagine Eussee and Bolt in his prime. Fast, strong, unstoppable. Now imagine a runner, slow, podding, shaped somewhat like a few retired Baptist preachers I know. And Zeno says, give the minister a head start, and Eussein the lightning bolt can never catch our retired Baptist. Why? Because every time Usain Bolt reaches the point where the minister was, the minister has moved a little further ahead. And when Usain Bolt reaches that point, the minister has moved again, and so on and so on forever. It's a bit like trying to catch your Stado or trying to get your children out the door on a school morning. Zeno's conclusion was that motion is impossible, and that Usain Bolt can never win a race against our old fat retired minister, and that minister will never be able to be beaten. Of course, in real life, we all know Bolt would overtake that tortoise of a man in about three thousandths of a second, but Zeno isn't interested in real life. He is interested in logic, and he's using logic to defend Parmenides' claim that motion is an illusion. Paradox 2, the flying arrow, which would create in reality the world's most boring archery competition. Zeno says, take an arrow in flight, at any single instant, it occupies a space exactly equal to itself. But if it occupies a space equal to itself, then it must be at rest. Therefore, at every instant the arrow is not actually moving, therefore the arrow can never move. This is the philosophical equivalent of hitting the pause button on your TV and saying, see, nothing's happening here. It's like arguing that a football match consists entirely of tens of thousands of still photographs, or that your favorite film is just a series of frozen images where nobody ever blinks. Zeno's point is simple and it's devastating. If time is made of instances and nothing moves in an instant, then nothing can move at all. Paradox three, the race course, the world's slowest jog. Before you can run a mile, he says you must run half a mile, and before you can run half a mile, you must run a quarter of a mile, and before that an eighth, and before that a sixteenth, and so on and so on forever. Zeno's conclusion, you can never start running because you must complete an infinite number of tasks first. It is the philosophical justification for procrastination. Sorry, I didn't go on my run today because Zeno said it's impossible. So what was Zeno really doing here with these paradoxes? Was he just trying to annoy athletes, archers, or joggers? He was in fact defending Permenides, his teacher, whom we looked at last time. Permenides is the one who said change is impossible, and Zeno said that's right, and now let me show you why believing in change will lead to absurdities like these. His paradoxes are not really meant to describe the world, they're meant to expose the weaknesses in our assumptions about the world and what we see. Assumptions about space, time, motion, and even infinity. But here's the astonishing thing Zeno's paradoxes were not fully resolved until the invention of what was called calculus in the seventeenth century. For over two thousand years that tortoise kept winning and no one could refute the argument. For me, a few of these paradoxes remain unsolved in my everyday life. Trying to leave a church coffee time. Every time you go to the door someone stops you for just one more thing. You can never escape. Zeno wins again, trying to get teenagers to clean their room. Every time they tidy one corner, another corner becomes a message. Motion is impossible. Cleanliness is an illusion. In my house anyway, sometimes. Zeno would have been delighted in all this. But why does he matter? Well Zeno was the first philosopher to show that logic can challenge our actual experience. He forces us to ask if reason can contradict our senses, and if so, which do we trust? Now these are not trivial questions. They will shape mathematics, physics, and indeed theology, and Christians too have long wrestled with the tension between what we see and what reason or revelation tells us is true. Paul writes we walk by faith, not by sight. Zeno would have said exactly sight is unreliable, we just have to go and ask you in bolt. Zeno is the mischievous guardian of Permenides' position. He is the philosopher who used logic like a trapdoor. He is the man who makes motion vanish, arrows freeze, and heroes lose races against tortoises. Looking at the world through Zeno's eyes makes it look more and more like a matrix movie every week and its famous bullet time freeze frames. But Zeno also prepares the way for the next two thinkers in our story, men who tried to rescue the world from Permenides' frozen universe view, that being Empedocles, who reintroduced change through the dance between love and strife, and Anaxagoras, who brings mind into the cosmos as the thing that sets everything in motion. But before we meet them I'd like to pause. But unfortunately Zeno proved with impeccable logic we can't actually ever pause. So I suppose we'd better continue. Empedocles, the poet and the magician, the man who tried to fix the universe with love. If Zeno is the philosopher, come prankster who breaks motion, then Empedocles is the flamboyant showman who tries to fix the universe using poetry and yes, quite literally, the power of love. He is one of the most colorful figures in the ancient world, part scientist, part mystic, part political reformer, part miracle worker, and the man who may or may not have jumped into a volcano just to prove a point. Empedocles is what happens when you give a philosopher a liar, a white robe, and far too much self-confidence. He is the creator of the four roots. Empedocles looked at the philosophical mess left behind by Heraclitus and Parmenides and said, Gentlemen, you're both wrong. And you're also both right. Allow me to tidy this up. And his solution everything is made of four eternal, unchanging elements earth, air, fire, and water. Now these are not just metaphors. He believed these four elements were the actual building blocks of reality. You, me, your dog if you have one, your favorite coffee mug, the moon, the sea, the smells of freshly baked breads and other things less pleasant. Everything is just these four core elements mixed together in different proportions. It's like the universe has become one sort of giant cosmic smoothie. Love and strife also, the first cosmic superpowers. But he didn't stop just there. He realized that if the four roots are eternal and unchanging, something must explain why they combine, separate, and recombine. Enter the first cosmic forces in the thinking of Western philosophy. Love, philia, the power that unites, and strife, Necos, the power that divides. These are not just emotions and they're not being used as just metaphors here. They are literal cosmic forces he believed that shape the universe. Love is pulling everything together into unity, and strife is tearing everything apart, into multiplicity. Empedocles basically invented the first Marvel movie plot. Empedocles believed that the cosmos moves through vast cycles. Love dominates, everything blends into a perfect sphere, then strife enters in and things begin to separate. And when strife dominates, everything is scattered and chaotic, but then love can return and things begin to reunite again. It's like the universe is in a never ending soap opera. It's like the universe is constantly changing its Facebook status together in a relationship. Yes, no, it's complicated, and repeat that for eternity. Despite his mystical flair, Empedocles made some astonishingly accurate scientific observations. Yes, really. He recognized that air is a substance, not just a space, of a neutral space. He proposed a form of natural selection, suggesting creatures with usful features survived, and others with less so didn't. And he understood also that light travels, though he thought it moved much more slowly than science would later prove. He also performed experiments with water and air pressure. But Predicles was not just a protoscientist, he was also a magician. Yes, also, really. Empedocles travelled round Sicily, supposedly performing healings, stopping plagues, it was claimed, and wearing the dramatic robes to prove he was such when he did so. He claimed to have supernatural powers and was even rumored to have raised the dead. He once declared, I am a god and am no longer mortal. This is the ancient equivalent of updating your LinkedIn bio from public figure to God. And then comes that famous story, the famous volcano incident. Empedocles, supposedly seeking to prove his divinity, leapt into Mount Edna. The volcano was so unimpressed it was said to have spat out one of his bronze sandals. Now, of course, historians debate whether that actually happened, but the fact that people believed it for centuries tells you everything you need to know about Empedocles' reputation. But here's my surprising resonance in all this. Now let's be clear, Empedocles is not a proto-Christian. He's not even close. But the idea that the universe is shaped by two fundamental forces, one that unites and one that divides, has a faint resonance with what Christian reflect would later reflect on love and sin, unity and brokenness, harmony and conflict, creation's fall and its longing for restoration. As Augustine would later write, love is the weight that moves our souls. Empedocles would have said yes, and it moves the cosmos too. So why does he matter? Well Empedocles matters because he is the first philosopher to propose a plurality of eternal elements and that cosmic forces are the things that shape reality. He offered a sort of proto-scientific explanation for change alongside a mythic vision of the universe as going in cycles. But he also just suggested, this is where it's important, that there was a moral dimension to cosmic order. Many would say he's the bridge between myth and science, between poetry and physics, and between the mystical and the rational view of the world. And he sets the stage for the next thinker in our story today, one who will take Empedocles' pluralism and add something new. Because after Empedocles comes Anaxagoras, the philosopher who introduced the idea that the universe is ordered by intelligence, but whose? After Zeno's paradoxical obstacle course, and Empedocles' cosmic soap opera of Love and Strife, Anaxagoras now enters the story. Like the calm, thoughtful adult who's walked into a room full of children and asks who broke that vase, and then says, Let's talk this through rationally. He's the first philosopher to bring something astonishing into the conversation. Something that will echo through Plato, Aristotle, and then indeed carry on through the Church Father and Christian theology for centuries. The idea of mind, intelligence, naus. Anaxagoras is the philosopher who looked at the swirling chaos of the universe and says something needs to be in charge of all this. And Anaxagoras began with a bold idea. Everything is in everything, and something is the seed of all things. And he concluded that everything is actually made of tiny seeds of all substances, and that every object contains a little bit of everything else. Bread contains tiny seeds of bone, flesh, hair, and blood, he thought. Trees contain seeds of stone, water and fire. Your fingernails can seed seeds of wheat, air and sunlight. Now I know that sounds all bizarre, but he's trying to solve a very real problem. He's trying to work out how can eating your favourite sandwich be turned into muscle, be turned into you? How can plants grow from soil? His answer because the seed of everything are already present in everything. Now it's not of course quite modern biology, but it's a clever attempt to explain transformation without violating Permenides' previous rule that nothing can come from nothing. Anaxagoras believed the universe began as a vast, undifferentiated mixture, a sort of cosmic smoothie containing all the seeds of all things. Then he proposed something extraordinary. Something began to stir that mixture. Something set it spinning. Something separated light from dark, fine from coarse, warm from cold, and that something was not love, not strife, not fire, not water. It was, in fact, some one, an intelligent mind. Now he just called it the Naus, the first appearance of cosmic intelligence, and here we reach the heart of Anaxagoras' genius. He writes Mind is infinite, self-ruling, unmixed, and the finest of all things. Mind has power over all things that have life. And this is the first time in Western philosophy that the universe is said to be ordered by intelligence, rather than just the movement of blind forces. Mind, he said, is pure, it is unmixed with matter. It is free, self-ruling, self-determinating. It is powerful, it is able to initiate the prime motion. It is infinite, it is not limited by space, and it is knowing in the sense that it is aware of all things. Now, if you're hearing faint echoes of what is later becomes Christian theology, you're definitely not imagining that. Although Anaxagoras certainly does not describe the God of the Bible or Scripture, he is describing something that sounds suspiciously like the philosophical scaffolding for the idea of a creator. As Christian theologian Basil the Great would later write, the order of the universe reveals the mind that made it. Anaxagoras would have said yes, and I've been trying to tell people that for centuries. For him it was the great mind that set the cosmos in motion. For Anaxagoras, mind was not a passive observer, it is the initiator of motion. Mind started that cosmic world, mind separated the mixture, and mind arranged the heavens. Mind ordered the seasons and shaped the world into a place where life can flourish. This is the first philosophical argument that the universe is intelligent because it is the product of intelligence. Centuries later, Christian thinkers will say the same thing, only with far greater clarity. Statements inscription Scriptures like in the beginning was the word, the Logos, he holds up all things by the word of his power, in him all things were held together. Mirror this truth. Anaxagoras, of course, didn't know the Logos had personality, but he sensed the need for a rational source behind a rational world. Anaxagoras also made bold scientific claims. He said the sun is not a god. He said it's just a red hot stone. The moon is made of earth and reflects sunlight. It did not have its own light source, he said, and meteorites he identified as rocks that have fallen from the heavens. He also said life may have originated from seeds carried in the air. Now these ideas were so shocking that he was actually charged with impiety and at one point forced to flee Athens. Imagine telling a crowd of Bathenians your sun god is nothing other than just a hot rock. It didn't go down well. But there is real Christian resonance here, an idea that has become almost a strapline, mind before matter. Anaxagoras' greatest contribution is the idea that mind must precede matter. This is the philosophical seed that will later blossom into Plato's forms, Aristotle's idea of the unmoved mover, and indeed the Stoic's logos. And most importantly, the Christian doctrine of creation by the word, the belief that the universe is rational because it comes from a rational God. The world is intelligible because it is made by intelligence. So why does Anaxagoras matter? Well, he's the first philosopher to insist that the universe is ordered and for there to be order. It demands, it requires intelligence. And he also said that intelligence is distinct from the matter of the universe and that motion must begin with the mind that thinks of motion, which initiates, which means that life is shaped by purpose, not just accident. He's the quiet revolutionary who introduced the idea that the cosmos is not just some sort of random philosophical system, it is a thoughtful one. And with that the pre-Socratic world is ready for its next great transformation. Because after Anaxagoras comes a new generation, people like the atomists, then the Sophists, and then of course the three giants of philosophy, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Men who take the idea of mind and turn it into one of the most powerful intellectual traditions in all history, Greek philosophy. And that, my friend, brings us to the end of our whirlwind tour through paradoxes, cosmic forces, and the first philosophical glimpse of a universe shaped by intelligence. Today we began with Zeno, the man who weaponized logic so effectively that he nearly convinced the ancient world that motion wasn't possible. He proved that Achilles couldn't catch a tortoise, arrows couldn't fly, and runners couldn't even start running, and mathematicians have been quietly sweating over these ever since. Zeno is the philosopher who makes you doubt your very own footsteps. Then we stepped into the technical word of Empedocles, the poet, the healer, the political reformer, and possible volcano diver. He gave us the four roots of all things and the cosmic drama of love and strife. He is the philosopher who believed the universe is a love story, a battle, a poem, and a science experiment, all going on at once. And then finally we met Anaxagoras, the calm, clear-headed thinker who introduced something astonishing into the philosophical conversation. Mind. He is the first to say that the universe is not just swirling around, it is ordered by intelligence. He gave us the idea that the cosmos is intelligible because it comes from intelligence, a theme that Christian thinkers will later develop with profound depth. Together, these three thinkers today have shown us that the world is logical to a degree, dynamic to a degree, purposeful to a degree, and intelligible, hopefully to a degree. But occasionally for me, well frequently actually, just very confusing. But they prepare the ground for the next great shift in philosophy, one that will take us from cosmic forms and paradoxes to the building blocks of matter and the art of persuasion. Because in our next episode the story will take another dramatic turn. We're going to meet Lecupicus and Democritus, the first atomists. Heuccippus and Democritus, the thinkers who looked at the entire philosophical mess, flux, permanence, love strife, mind, rivers, rocks, even tortoises, and said, Let's simplify all this. Everything is just atoms and the void. They are the first philosophers to propose that the universe is made of tiny, indivisible particles moving through space. It is one of the most astonishing leaps in the history of thought. So astonishing that modern physics still bears its fingerprints and traces its roots to this beginnings. They will challenge everything that the earlier pre-Socratics believed. And they will raise questions that Christian thinkers will wrestle with for centuries. What is matter? What is the soul? Is the universe purposeful or mechanical? Is everything just atoms in motion? And then after that, beyond that, we will come to the sophists, the philosophers who again broke all the previous rules. The sophists were traveling teachers who turned philosophy into a profession and perfusion into an almost art form. They are clever, witty, cynical, often brilliant, occasionally infuriating. They would ask weak people and arm them to ask questions like what is truth? Does it even matter? Can you teach virtue? And if you can't, can you at least appear to sound virtuous? They are the perfect warm-up act for the great to come. Socrates, who will soon walk onto our stage and challenge them all. But our next episode is the final chapter of our journey through the pre-Socratic world. It's where the ancient conversation about matter, motion, truth, and persuasion will reach its climax and where the seeds of the classical era will finally begin to sprout. It's also where the stage is set for the arrival of our three great thinkers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
