In the New Testament the writer to the Hebrews said this;
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
(Heb 11: 3)
I want to review at this point by making a couple of spiritual applications of what has just gone before in these opening 5 verses of Genesis. Because all of this stuff become meaningless if it doesn’t have an application into how we live our Christian lives. So that is what I would like to do in this next podcast.
First point. A sovereign God created the universe, which means if God made it, He named it, then He is Lord over it.
Second point. God created light in order for it to shine in the darkness. The New Testament uses light shining in the darkness as an illustration of conversation. Jesus himself said, I am the light of the World. The Apostle John in his first letter said, Jesus is the light of the world who shines in the darkness. Paul also said that when God makes people new creations, he sets the light of the gospel to shine in their dark minds. Unbelieving people are portrayed as scrambling around in the dark. Until the Spirit of God hovers over their darkness enlightening them so that they might see the gospel and that Jesus died for their sins and rose from the dead to set them free. That’s why one of the oldest and favourite ways of describing a conversation experience is to say, “I saw the light”.
What God did with His Word from the beginning he can do again on this day, in the same way. He is still doing today in the same way. God is in the business of creation when he created light out of darkness. And today God is in the business of re-creation when he shines the light of his truth into the hearts of ordinary men and woman today. Jesus, the light of the world shies forth today and he is still in the business of shining his truth and love into your heart.
I want to close by reading you something written in 1962 by American theologian Dr Mike De Hann. This is the concluding paragraph of his commentary of the 1st Chapter of Genesis.
Genesis Ch 1, There it is take it or leave it. In the beginning God created, you may read no further until you have decided whether you believe that opening verse of scripture or not. All the rest of the bible is settled by your acceptance of rejection of that first verse…. If you cannot believe the first verse of scripture, then you can believe nothing else it teaches. For if it begins with a lie you cannot believe anything else. But if you believe Gen 1: 1 you can believe anything else in the book. If you believe God created from eternity before time began, then nothing is impossible. There was a time when there was no time, then God proposed to create the universe, but there was nothing to begin with but himself. So, God began with nothing when the moment comes, he merely speaks the word…. He picks up handful of nothing and throws it out into nowhere and that nothing become something.
He sprinkles the ceiling with dust of stars and planets, constellations systems and galaxies and send them dancing on their way singing the music of spheres. If I can believe that in the beginning God created, I can believe all else in the bible. Including the fact that the creator God was also Jesus Christ, the living word. So too I can believe every promise in this book because my faith comes to rest in Gen chapter 1. If you do not accept the opening verses of the bible, then seek no further, because you must begin at the beginning”.
