The fifth day is relatively straightforward, God creates what is sometimes referred to as the fish and the fowl. In day two and three He had created the sea and the land and here on day five he begins to populates those places. Verse 21 says he created great sea creatures and everything that moves under the water, whales, and giant squids and all imaginable forms of sea-life.  Again, the Babylonians and the ancient Egyptians worshipped these great sea-creatures, and again Moses reminds them that they have got this wrong.  God created all the amazing birds and fish and mammals in order that we should worship the creator not his creatures and again, God declares these things “good” and then it says that God blessed them.  His blessing is disclosed as one of allowing them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the oceans, and the earth and the sky. So that is day five.

Now let’s get to day six, by picking up at verse 24. 

24 And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

We saw on the third day that God made land, and now on the sixth day we see God commands that they fill the land.  At this point he also created mankind and it is important to note he particularly said, “let us create them in our image”.  This verse at least implies or leaves room for the concept of the trinity.  However, for those who are don’t find this absolutely on its own evidence enough you will find the trinity will be revealed more fully later in the book of Genesis.  But what we can definitely take from this is the clear statement that we are created in the image of God. What exactly does it mean to be created in the image of God? Let me first state that being “being created in the image of God” is nothing to do with our physical bodies. It is talking about being related to the image of God as a result of our identity and our personhood.  You see, God Himself is a person, and he is a creative loving being with personality. In other words, God has a mind, and he expresses emotion, and He has a will. Humans are created in His likeness in that we too also have intellectual abilities, natural emotion and most importantly freewill. Even following our fall from grace we still maintains those characteristics. 

God creates humanity in verse 26 then in verse 28 He tells them to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and to rule over it.  Humanity is thereby called to have stewardship over all of creation.  All aspects of creation including the creatures that live on it and that includes the sea the air and the land.  He wants us to care for all creation, but He wants us to do it wisely and this is the point in the text where he begins to populate the earth with both plant and animal.

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

Again, God declares His creation, very good, fit for purpose.  However, things of course will go wrong after the fall and humanity will be expelled from the garden, but for the moment that is it, the end of the sixth day.
