If you are a married person I wonder if you could honestly say that being married to you is like living in Paradise.  Occasionally we all have our disagreements and when we do, they should over very important issues and we should really try and resolve them amicably. In my life the hugely important things that myself and my wife have argued about in our 30 years of marriage include. The cooking times of chickens, the tog factor of a duvet. What colour a pot of paint really is, was it green or blue? (it was green by the way) The difference between a cup cake and a muffin, and how delicious the low-fat option is. Having said that we agree on most things and overall our marriage is very strong, but I am not sure you could refer to as just like living in Paradise. 

However, that begs the question, what do you think Paradise looks like? It’s worth knowing that God once created a Paradise for a man and a woman to live in. Let’s find out what God version of paradise looked like, and what it included, by looking at what God did when he designed and created a paradise on earth as recorded for us in Genesis Chapter 2  As we go through this passage over this chapter we are going to overview three or four of the key things. 

Firstly, are going to look at the creation of humankind. Then, we shall consider the creation of the Garden of Eden. Thirdly we will consider a specific command that God gave to Adam. Then finally we shall look at the companion God gave to Adam and what living in Paradise was supposed to be like. 

So, let’s look together at what paradise really looked like by looking at verse four.

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.

Verse four begins by saying this is the account: when the Lord God made the heavens and the earth. Up to this point the text has been talking about the creation, but now it is saying, this is what becomes of that creation. It’s going to tell us what will become of the earth.  How sin and disobedience will creep in here in chapter two and how humanity will be cursed in chapter. However, we shall later see how things will go further downhill in chapter four and five. But at this point it simply saying look what happens immediately after God created the heavens and the earth. He begins by telling us this in verse 5 and 6

5 Now no shrub had yet appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no one to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground.

Up to this point there had been no rain, and there are no human beings to cultivate the land yet, so only natural vegetation had appeared. However, now we begin to see the process that will eventually lead to cultivation and that will be achieved by the introduction of humanity in the form of one man and one human in the form of Adam and Eve, and we shall begin to look at that in more details next time.
