·        All I have said so far is God is the creator of marriage

·        He intended it to be between two people.

·        And He intended it to be between a man and a woman.

·        And fourthly the purpose of marriage was to create a model for family.

Now, let’s go back to Ch 2:24

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

So, the final thing we can say about marriage as taught in the Bible and probably the most important thing is that Marriage is a union between believers. God intended for marriage to be a union under his blessing. Two are going to become one they are to be united. The strong opinion of all the main bible scholars is that the one flesh includes the physical union (S.E.X.) and the spiritual. This means that before the Lord and before each other you serve each other and the Lord as one.

Now you may almost miss the final obvious point that underpins everything I have just said. But if you are going to be one, physically, emotionally, spiritually, then of course that means believers ought to marry…. Believers. II Cor 6 tells us not to be unequally yoked. If you read that passage in its entire context, it is in fact talking about business relationships I think it can definitely be applied to marriage and it is a sound biblical principal, but technically 2 Corinthians is not talking about marriage. So, what I would like to do is give you a verse that clearly unmistakably says that if you are a Christian you should – marry – a -  believer.

A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord. (I Cor 7: 39)

The bible clearly says, that if you are believer in Jesus Christ then you should only marry another believer. And this verse says it, by statement.

God intends marriage to be a physical, emotional and spiritual union, but how can it be so if spiritually a couple don’t believe the same thing. If you’re a Christian as far as the spiritual criteria is concerned there is only one restriction. You are free to marry another adult of the opposite sex regardless of their age, regardless of their race, regardless of their cultural or ethnic background, as long as they are believer in the Lord. Free to marry anyone as long as they also belong to the Lord. FULL STOP. To leave the spiritual unity out of a marriage make that marriage less than God intended. To be united physically mentally and emotionally is great, but to add to that a unity in the Spirit is simply to experience a God designed ideal marriage at its best.

The true blessing of Christian marriage is not elaborate or complicated it is simply one partner thinking more of the happiness of the other than they do of themselves. A love which is selfish, a love that is not too proud to serve the other, a love that is always able to forgive is God’s design for marriage.

Alright how are we doing? Let’s sum up.

God’s plan for marriage is for it to be one man married to one woman. Coming together to form a new family unit who are untied to each other physically emotionally and spiritually. I want to finish by making a couple of quick observations.

God plan for marriage is that is monogamous – One man one woman.

Gods plan for marriage is that the family unit is to be the basic building block of society.

Later as God reveals his full plan for humanity, he will add government and still later after that he will add the church. In the fullness of time the basis of society will be revealed via this book of Genesis to be, the family, the government and the church, but the most basic, fundamental, foundational building block of society is the family. When that building block begins to crumble it will affect the ability of government to govern and the church to thrive. That’s a sobering thought isn’t it, which is why it is vitality important we understand what God intentions for the human race were. If we maintain these principals as God intends it, it will form the foundation of a solid society. And if we maintain it as best, we can within the church it will form the foundation of a solid church family. It would help produce a more stable government, and more stable churches. And if we don’t have that then you have……what?

The mess that much of the world is in today
