Look at verse 14

So, the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,“ Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.

Now this is rather interesting, God does not ask Satan any questions He's just cross-examined Adam and Eve but when he gets to the serpent, and he doesn't ask any questions. Perhaps that's because there is no sense in trying to get him to confess and ask for redemption. The serpent is not going to be saved or redeemed. Satan is to be cursed and the punishment will correspond to the crime. The serpent exalted himself above man therefore it shall now crawl on its belly and eat dust. Many Bible teachers have come to this passage and suggested that this is the point when the posture of the serpent gets changed. 

So, three things are going to happen to Satan  

·        He's gonna be cursed. 

·        He's gonna crawl on his belly. 

·        And He is going to wallow in the dust as a sign of his defeat.

And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.

(Gen 3:15)

Just look at the language used here. The idea being symbolised here is one of utter humiliation. Satan is going to be conquered, vanquished, he is going to be defeated. But note also God says that there is going to be hostility between the woman and the snake. Satan no doubt believed that since he persuaded Eve to obey his word rather than God's word that she and her offspring would now be loyal to him…. Not so. God promises to put in place a generational hostility between Satan and the children of Eve. Open hostility between the Satan’s seed and Eve’s seed.

What does this mean - Satan does not have physical descendants? So, who are the seed of Satan as described in this passage? It a difficult passage, but nearly everyone who looks at this, Christian and Jewish commentators alike, all say that this refers to the spiritual descendants of Satan on one hand and Eve on the other. In other words, between believers, and unbelievers. Family line according to Jewish tradition at the time this was written followed the woman, and that why she is used here for this illustration. In other words, this is predicting the eternal clash between believers and unbelievers. Or as some have described it, the universal battle between the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light. If that wasn’t interesting enough, God then says this, “He will bruise your heal and you shall bruise/crush his head”. Now it gets really interesting, because here we are told for the first time in the bible that that universal conflict will now narrows to a battle between two individuals. 

The imagery here is taken form the idea of a man stepping on a snake head. To do this is to deliver a fatal blow. So, the He is the individual from who this fatal blow will come. And this person is going to be the seed of the woman.All the main commentators agree this is going way beyond the narrative story of a battle between a woman and a snake. This is a symbolic reference to the Messiah and how he will ultimately defeat Satan. I think it is clearly saying Satan may appear to have a sort of victory by the bruising of the heel, but the Messiah Jesus will win the war and do so with a total victory.  To the point of crushing the head of his opponent. Some say this is the first proclamation of the full gospel in the bible. It prophesies and predicts as early as here in Genesis 3 that there will be a conflict between Satan and the Messiah, and that conflict is going to result in the Messiah although having his heal bruised during his first coming. But crushing Satan’s head at the Messiahs second coming. 

Satan tried to use the woman to destroy man. But God would use the seed of the very same woman to one day destroy Satan utterly. That’s it for this time in the next Episode we shall see God speak to the woman and pronounce judgement of her and Adam as well as deliver a prophecy.
