Now, the long lives of the pre flood era are now over and God now says’ and I'm going to limit humanity to a maximum of 120 years from now on. I submit to you that of this is very bad news. People today are always talking about what's going on in the world and how it's about as bad as it can get. Well, it was the same back then. So, let me ask, is there any good news in all this? It's subtle but please note God says in verse 3 he says the years shall be 120 years.

This tells us two things. Number one God has set a time limit in order to allow people to turn away form evil and respond to Him. Number 2 he will be gracious first. So, there is some good news within this judgement. God is always gracious even in the midst of the most unimaginable evil. God’s grace means he always does more than is required even expected. Before God judges anyone he always allows them enough time to allow them to turn to him and change the direction of their life, but the bad news is the perversion of humanity. However, the good news is always the patience of God's grace and the hope of restoration. Just as the inhabitants of the earth were perverse in the days before the flood. Humanity today, although exceedingly sinful, God remains patient and offers salvation. When you watch world events and maybe you think how much worse can things get? Remember the good news is always God's grace. Maybe you look at the news and get cynical wondering why doesn't God do something. Well maybe now you can look at the bad news and remember the good news that God always offers forgiveness and a new start. So always try and remember God is gracious. 

Let's pick up the story again at verse four.

“The Nephilim [Giants] were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes [mighty men] of old, men of renown.

(Gen 6: 4)

.Taken together with the wording of numbers 13:33 it seemed to support that conclusion these mighty men were huge by stature and huge by reputation. Renowned for their exploits of strength and violence and that is what made them famous, or perhaps a better way of putting it would be to say that made them infamous. They inspired fear by their acts of war and violence. The rest of this passage through to verse 7 is where we're given God's reaction to this perversion and pollution of the human family.

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”

It is at this point we see God reacting to the wickedness He sees.  We shall look at that reaction next time.
