13 On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark. 14 They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings. 15 Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. 16 The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. The author repeats the information to assure the readers that the inhabitants of the Ark were safe and secure they all got in and he goes in detail to describe who got in and then even goes on to say, the Lord himself shut the door. He then goes on to tell us two more things. He will give us the extent of the flood, and the effect of the flood. 

17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased, they lifted the ark high above the earth. 18 The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. 19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits and the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth and all the high Hills under the whole heaven was covered the waters prevailed 15 cubits upwards and the mountains were covered”. (Gen 7: 17-20) 

This passage describes the increase of water until it covered the mountains. There are phrases here that clearly indicate that a water covered the mountains. I believe it clearly teaches a universal flood over the whole earth and not a local flood. So, what was the effect of the flood?

21 Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. 22 Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. 24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days. (Gen 7: 21a-24) 

The effect of the flood was that all living things that breathed air outside the ark died. The description of the flood concludes by noting that water flooded the earth for 150 days which includes the 40 days of the rain. It's offered as further proof that everything perished because no living thing could survive submerged under 15 Cubits (over 20 feet) of water even above the highest point of land and everywhere was covered over for at least 150 days. 

Alright that’s a lot of information and that's everything that Genesis tells us about the flood. Now all I've done so far is go through all these verses and tell you what it says happens. But I suspect when it comes to accepting this account I am preaching to the choir. So, what have I accomplished, if you believed this already? However, I have shocking news for you, not everybody's feels that way. There are even many people who identify as Christians who don't accept things that the Bible say, just because the Bible says it. There are another group of people, a huge number of people out there who don't accept anything as true that is written in the bible. 

For those reasons I’d like to unpack this a little further by giving five reasons as to why I believe it is reasonable to believe that the flood was real event and a world-wide event…. And we will do that in the next episode.
