In today’s message we are going to put aside looking at the details of the flood event itself and instead just look at the passage and ask, what is the main message of the passage? What is its purpose, what is it meant to teach us spiritually? Because although the facts of the story are important, they are only important because the underpin a spiritual truth. The story provides a framework upon which we can hang some vitally important spiritual lessons. So, today I want to remind you of what this story should teaches us and I'd like to suggest, it teaches us 3 things. 

In the 1st place, the flood is a witness to the sovereignty of God. God when recognised as creator of all things as disclosed here in Genesis means that God can sovereignly choose to work his salvation plan for mankind according to His plans and His purposes. 

Secondly is also teaches us about the power of God, both in the affairs of men, and in the course of nature. This story’s purpose is to demonstrate that God is powerful, and that God is sovereign. 

The 3rd point of the story of the flood is that it meant to stand as a warning. It stands as a warning that a just and sovereign God will always judge evil. The universal flood is a graphic reminder that there will one day a universal judgment. Maybe that's why some want to argue that it is just a story or it was just a local flood. because then they don't have to worry about a sovereign God judging people. However, by the power of the Holy Spirt, whom the Bible tells us inspired these writings and in the name of Christ Jesus, I pray that God will reveal to everyone listening to this that God has provided a means of by which we all men and woman might escape that coming judgement and find safety and security and blessing in His presence.
