We consider the fact last time that God is a person, and that he has personality. Today we are going to consider what the consequences are of not believing that God a person?  Also, what are the implications if we do recognise him as a person. 

The first thing to say is that if God is just a force and not a person, there can be no true real relationship in any real sense of the word: No personal communication, no prayer, no one to rely on, no confidence, and no hope. However, because God is a person then anybody anywhere can know Him and communicate with Him, personally, person to person. Christianity is first and foremost about a relationship with the personhood of God. If we just keep remembering God is a Person and EVERYONE IS MADE IN THE IMAGE OF God, then any ideas about how we should live our lives begin to inform our decisions and begin to take care of themselves. So that is why it is important to know that God is a person.

God is also a Spirit. This makes things a little more interesting. If God is a spirit, Why is it important?  If God is a Spirit, then that is very important because it means that God can be communicated with or worshipped anywhere. Not even just in a church building, God can be worshipped anywhere. Some people treat God like He is an object who can only be in one place or they attempt to give particular geographical locations heightened importance and suggest you need to go there to receive a particular blessing. Remember this, because God is spirit, He can be communicated with, worshipped and experienced anywhere. God can be met with, anywhere.  God is not handcuffed to any place, or any pulpit, or any church building. God is Spirit, which means that we can relate to Him everywhere. You can talk to God anywhere, and everywhere, about anything, because He is a Spirit. OK I have one more thing to say about God.

God is Eternal 

I know this seems obvious again, but again this is important, because the bible tells us, God is eternal. Moses wrote. 

“The Eternal God is your refuge and underneath are the Everlasting Arms”

(Deut. 33:27).

Paul 2000 years later stated.

“Now to the King Eternal, immortal, invisible, to God, who alone is wise be honour and glory forever and ever!

(1 Tim. 1:17).

Did you know there are two kinds of eternal beings? The created and the uncreated. The word “eternal” is used in two different senses. In the first sense is applies to a something that has a beginning, but no end. That definition of eternal applies to you and me. For us to live in the eternal means we have an existence which does not end, but we also had a beginning. Did you have a birthday, a beginning day? Yet when we die physically the bible teaches that we will live on forever, spiritually. Do not forget the fact that the bible teaches that all of humanity will live forever after we died physically, we will all exist forever in eternity. The only difference between people is the destination in which they shall spend that eternity. 

But there is another way, a different way the word “eternal” when it applies to God. God has neither beginning nor end. God is alone in that category.  Psalm 90:2 speaking of God says,  

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or You ever had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.”

(Ps 90: 2)

God is without existence without beginning or end; He has no limits or dimensions.  He is present, without past or future.  Life without birth or death; If God is eternal, it means you can have a relationship with him that is also eternal. Because Gods is eternal our relationship with him, cannot, will not, ever be broken, not by him anyway. That stands in stark contrast to human relationships. God’s relationship with us will never be broken by him in any circumstances. Your see these simple, basic foundational things about God are deeply significant.
