As I said at the beginning of this section to a philosopher personhood is a technical term. To the biologist human is a biological term. Interestingly from a Christian perspective an understanding of personhood starts not with an understanding of humanity but rather with our view of God.
So, we have discovered three things these last few days.
1 God is a Person.
2 God is a Spirit.
3 God is eternal.
So when it comes to “personhood” ultimately the question is not who are you, but whose you are. To whom do you belong.
The Bible tells us we are valuable to God you are unique and a complete and complicated personality fashioned in the image of God for a particular purpose. Ultimately the root of every human conflict is our inability to see each other that way and to recognize another person’s innate worth as someone who is made in the image of God. Having lost sight of that intrinsic beauty of every human person is it any wonder we have learned to treat each other in such disrespectful and it even seems hateful ways. What is means to be a person is to be created in the image of God. What it means to find meaning is to find your creator and to find out why he has created you. Find the purpose for which you made.
So, in general terms we are created in the image of God. But in particular terms it is his personality that has been placed in you by His Holy Spirit that defines who we are as a person. To me the person of Jesus Christ is the coherent answer to who I am in that he inspires my personality, defines my potential, and draws me into that personal relationship with Him. He also takes me through the process of sanctification and shows me the purity of Jesus himself in the way he taught and lived. And in rising from the dead, he taught me that time is merely a passing a temporal thing, and we will exist in our personhood for eternity.
He is able to take us through the cross, past the empty tomb and into the very presence of God. I do not believe there is any other world view that can give you coherent answers to the problems of life and identity with logic and consistency. Logical meaningful existence alongside experiential relevance He is the way the truth and the life and no one come to the father except through him. He describes you heart. He defines your potential. He takes account of your faults. He makes sense of your suffering, and he puts meaning into history
Surrender to him, love him, follow him, serve Him, live for him and take his message with you wherever you go.
