God, Money & Artists: How to Break The Starving Artist Mentality for Good

The most painful surprise I’ve seen after years of mentoring Christian artists is this: the ones who struggle the most are often the most gifted. Not because they lack skill, opportunities, or even faith, but because they’re living under an almost invisible belief that making a living as an artist is hard or even wrong. I call it the starving artist mentality, and if it’s been running in the background of your decisions, it can quietly turn your creative calling into a life of striving.

We get honest about what that mindset sounds like: always feeling behind, assuming “real provision” has to come from something other than your art, and watching your joy drain away in work that feels practical but dead. Then we open the Bible and look at how God’s provision actually works. Jesus’ words in Matthew 6 (the birds of the air and the lilies of the field) reveal a pattern: provision in the Kingdom is tied to identity as God’s child, and it flows through your unique design for your unique assignment. When you chase money outside that alignment, you get burnout. When you seek first God’s Kingdom, practical needs are added as a result of right positioning.

To make it actionable, I share a simple process I use for breaking agreement with the old story and building a new one: the five R’s for renewing your mind (recognize, repent, replace, reinforce, rejoice). We also talk about stewardship, small beginnings, and the promise of increase as you’re faithful with what’s already in your hand, echoing the abundance blueprint of 2 Corinthians 9:8.

The Hidden Belief Holding Artists Back

One thing has really surprised me over the last 17 years of mentoring Christian artists, and it's this the artists who struggle the most are often the most talented. I know it doesn't make any sense, but they love Jesus. They have skill. They even have a lot of opportunity, but most of them are living under this almost invisible belief that's convinced them that making a living as an artist is hard and sometimes even wrong. Well, listen, that belief has a name, and it's the starving artist mentality. And unless you replace it intentionally with what God actually says about provision and what's truly possible for you as an artist, you'll just keep on struggling on your own instead of thriving as the artist that God created you to be. And so in this video, I'm going to help you recognize if this mindset has been operating in your life and show you what scripture really says about how God's provision works in the lives of artists today and give you some practical steps on starting to change the script in your life. From Financial Struggle To A Yes

in. You know, a lot of people look at my life right now as an artist and as somebody that mentors artists for a living and think, oh, wow, that's so great. You know, Matt's always been successful. But listen, trust me, that is that has not always been the case. In fact, for years, I struggled, my family and I, we struggled financially. And I remember thinking, you know, during this whole time, God, like I love you, I'm serving you, I'm doing the best I can. Why does it feel like I'm always behind, like I'm just barely making ends meet? Why does it seem like you're blessing everybody else but me? Why why can't I pursue my art and the creative dreams that are on my heart and actually make a living for that? See, right when we were on the verge of losing just about everything we had, after being out of ministry for a season, after losing a business that I loved, that I'd started, after losing a job after that, at my greatest point of what seemed like just absolute desperation, God spoke to me. And what he said really made no sense in the natural to me at all. In fact, he he woke me up two mornings in a row at 3.09 in the morning. And he said, Matt, I want you to raise up an army of artists to reveal my glory in the earth. And and in that moment, he also said that he was going to use my personal art as the vehicle to do it. Now, listen, honestly, that that made no sense, right? I was just doing my art as a hobby on the side. This made no logic. This did not feel safe. This did not feel like anything that I should be pursuing. But I said yes in that moment because honestly, I had no other option. I didn't feel. And listen, when I did, when I gave God my yes in that moment, everything shifted. And listen, the most surprising thing for me, the most surprising part of that shift was that provision from God in alignment with what he called me to do started flowing. Ideas and relationships, resources, divine appointments, opportunities, financial provision for our life. It all started flowing like in a moment as I said yes to what God had designed and assigned me to do in that season. And you know, as I look back, it opened up probably the most fruitful season of my entire life in these last 17 years, watching God provide abundantly for my every need, in abundance, more than I could ask or imagine. And as an artist making and selling my work in the marketplace and helping artists like you do what you're called to do. And you know, here's the coolest part. I've seen that same thing not only happen in my life, but in the lives of countless artists over the years who I've had the privilege of walking with in our mentoring program, which proves this God's word is true, and he's no respecter of persons. Listen, if he promised it in his word and he's done it in my life and in the lives of countless other artists all over the world, listen, my friend, he wants to do the same and even more in your life. Provision Flows Through Identity And Alignment

today. God's abundant provision for you as an artist is a promise based on who you are, not on what you do. And even more importantly, it flows in your life through your unique design for your unique assignment. See, when we try to chase provision in our life to just make it happen on our own, it always leads to struggling and striving and frustration 100% of the time. In fact, I really believe the number one reason that most artists struggle with money in their life isn't because it's God's plan for them to struggle, or it's got, you know, not God's plan for them to be an artist, or not even God's plan for them to pursue their art as a vocation or a ministry. I believe it's because of what they believe, what I believed. See, this was so surprising for me in my journey. You know, ultimately, what I thought was my struggle with money was not about money at all. In fact, it had everything to do with agreement. See, agreement is the spiritual principle in God's kingdom all throughout the Bible. Agreement opens the door in our life, either to God's abundant promises and provision or to the fruit of lies from the enemy. And see, here's how agreement starts to work. I thought that struggling financially as an artist was normal. I mean, it was my normal, right? But hear this: this is this is so important. I wasn't struggling with money because God wanted me to struggle, like his design for me was to struggle by myself. No, I was struggling because I was unknowingly agreeing with the wrong story, the story that I saw and was experiencing in my life. One that said I couldn't make a living as an artist, one that said, you know, having money as an artist or making a living with my art was always going to be hard. That somehow I needed to do something practical to make a living, you know, that art was never going to be that, right? You know the drill. It's it's the same old junk, the same old story that all of us have been taught. But here's the deal: over time, the more I told myself that, the more agreement that I had in my heart for that way of thinking, the more that that belief system formed in my heart and mind and became a stronghold. And that stronghold actually prevented me from seeing and believing and walking in what God had for me as an artist. Now, listen, I just want to pause here for just a second. I know this is probably a brand new revelation for you. I just want you to think for just a moment about what it is that you have really been believing about your financial provision as an artist? Can you see that old starving artist mentality maybe at work in your life? And in fact, let me ask you like, you know, does having enough money to pursue your creative calling, does that always seem like an impossibility for you? Does making ends meet always seem like a struggle? Is there always disappointment at the end of trying to make a living with your art? Does working a dead-end job, you know, that seems practical? Is that just something you've always done and you know that it's robbing you of your energy and your joy and it's keeping you from what God's called you to do? What about this? Would you love to be blessing others financially and through your art, but you know that there just never seems to be enough? I mean, do the do the dreams that you feel like God's put on your heart, do they seem to be getting further and further away or closer and closer to you? Listen, here, here's the deal. If any of those are your normal, in other words, if that's the story that is always playing inside your mind that, oh, it's over there, it's never going to happen for me, this is a struggle. Listen, I just want to let you know that is not God's best for your life. In fact, his word says that he's got plans to prosper you, not to harm you, to give you a hope in a future, to make you a blessing, to enlarge your territory, to not to walk in bondage to this old starving artist mentality. So listen, if that truly is God's God's truth, right? Then what's the antidote that he's got to this starving artist

Jesus’ Model For Kingdom Provision

mentality? Well, of course, like everything, it's found in his word. In fact, Jesus taught about money and provision a lot, probably a lot more than you think. And most famously in Matthew 6, I love this where Jesus said, you know, look at the birds of the air. They don't sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. And then he says this, and I love this, I love this picture. He says, Consider the lilies of the field. Even Solomon in all his glory are not arrayed like one of these. What is what is Jesus saying in the middle of that? I believe Jesus was saying this, that provision in the kingdom is tied to your identity as a child of God, not because of what you do. And it flows through your unique design for your unique assignment. In other words, birds don't try to be lilies, right? Lilies don't try to be birds. Each one receives what it needs, according to what? Well, according to its unique design and according to the realm that it's been created for. Listen, when you start to get this, this is like mind-blown. This is this is so huge. See, the problem for many artists is this. Most artists, and me included, for a lot of years, we've been trying to pursue our provision in a realm and in a way that God never designed for you. Or you end up trying to produce provision, make it happen through striving in your own strength or doing what makes you know practical sense, what everybody else says you should be doing, instead of operating from revelation that comes out of our relationship with God. And listen, guess what? No matter how sincere an artist might be, no matter how much you've tried, no matter how much you love Jesus, how much you're praying about it, doing it the other way leads to frustration and striving on your own every time. See, later on in Matthew 6.33, Jesus gives us a real key, kind of a roadmap to uh having abundant provision in our life. He said, What? Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and what? All these things will be added unto you. And listen, in that verse, he's not talking about, that's right after the birds and the lilies and that whole story. He's not talking about spiritual blessings there. He's talking about physical provision. He goes into great detail, right? Talking about what you're gonna eat and what you're gonna drink, what you're gonna wear and what you're gonna live. He's saying, don't worry about that stuff, right? In other words, when you prioritize God's kingdom, God's rule and reign in and through your life, and when you say yes to all that he has for you in the context of your unique design and your unique kingdom assignment, what happens? Alignment happens. And when you align with who God's created you to be and what he's called you to do, guess what? That's where provision flows. Not because you're chasing it, not because you need it really bad, not because you're making it happen, but because you're positioned and aligned for it to flow the way God designed. And listen, when you do that, everything changes. And especially for us as artists. See, I love God's word. It just reflects and reinforces this over and over and over. Even in 2 Corinthians 9, 8, where it says that God will generously provide all you need, and then you'll always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. See, that is the blueprint of kingdom provision. All you need for everything he's called you to at all times, in all situations, with abundance to do what you're called to do in the kingdom, and at the same time be a blessing to others while you're doing it. That is the picture of abundance. That is God's design for provision in our life. Not this old starving artist barely enough, just barely scraping by, but abundant provision through your unique design from your heavenly father for your kingdom assignment. And listen, here's the best part. As you faithfully steward what God's already put in your hand, he will continue to increase it day after day after day so that you can continue to grow in all that God's called you to and even be a bigger blessing to others in the world around you.

The Five R’s To Renew Your Mind

Okay, so here's what you can start doing right now to start getting rid of this starving artist mentality. And I call it the five R's for renewing your mind. And it really is super simple. First, you just recognize if you've been believing a lie about provision and your life as an artist, about finances in your life. And remember, there's no shame or or condemnation in this moment because believe me, I trust me, the enemy would love to turn this moment of revelation around on you and make it about condemnation to make you feel bad, you know, for believing these things over the years. But that's not this moment. This is a moment of celebration. This is a moment of revelation, right? So just ask the Holy Spirit to show you in your heart from his word, if you've been believing something other than what he promises about your abundant provision for you as an artist. And listen, when he does, then that brings us to number two, which is repent. And listen, repent, don't let that be a scary word. Don't let that be a shame-filled word. It just means to change your mind, go in a different direction. Literally give that old thought to Jesus. Tell him, Lord, say, Lord, I don't want this old lie anymore. I come out of agreement with it. You know, for forgive me, Lord, for for agreeing with that, for allowing that thing to get sown in my heart. Lord, I pluck it out by the roots. I release it to you right now in Jesus' name. And then number three, ask him to replace that lie with truth from his word. Listen, this is when it gets really powerful. This is not positive thinking, right? This is not reframing. This is literally you sowing God's word in your heart so that it can become active to effect change inside of you. And when you do that, then the last two things are reinforce and rejoice. That is, every time the enemy comes back to you in that same place with that same lie to tempt you to believe something other than what God's word says about your provision, you just reinforce the truth that God just showed you in his word. It becomes your kind of your go-to weapon. And then as a daily part of your time with the Lord, you just train yourself to start rejoicing, to celebrate the fact that abundant provision is not way out there, but it belongs to you right now in Christ, not because of what you do, but because of who you are. Listen, doing this over time, practicing these five R's day by day and moment by moment, it literally starts to transform your heart and mind into alignment with God's purposes and plans for your life and for your finances, for the provision he's got for you. And listen, when that starts happening on the inside, you'll start seeing change happen on the outside. Steward Small Beginnings For Multiplication

it's this instead of believing that you got to be at a certain level, right, of finances or influence or sales or talent in your life as an artist for God, you know, to bless you, just be faithful with what God's put in your hand now, even if it doesn't look like much or or feel like much, right? Or feel like enough. Remember, the Bible says don't despise the days of small beginnings. We all start small as artists, as business owners, right? We all start with what seems just like a few loaves and a couple of fish, right? Like the whole Bible story. But when we offer those to God and steward well what God has entrusted to us, what he's put in our hand, he's the one that brings multiplication and acceleration into our life. So instead of asking for God to, you know, bless us with all these huge blessings and this huge vision, just slow down for a moment and ask the Holy Spirit to show you what he's already put in your hand. How can you start fully stewarding that? Yes, absolutely. Hold on to the big dreams that God's put on your heart, but faithfully steward what God's put in your hand now. And listen, when you do that, trust me, when you're faithful with that first, God will always be faithful to bless you with
