That creative pull you keep feeling might not be a distraction at all. We talk straight to the artist who feels called to create but keeps hesitating because the plan is unclear, the timing feels off, or the next step feels too small to matter. After years of helping artists move forward, we lay out four practical steps that turn confusion into momentum, without pretending you need a perfect studio, more money, or a five-year roadmap first.

We start by naming the thing many of us do: dismissing the desire to create as impractical, selfish, or “not spiritual.” Then we make it concrete. What does it look like to give God a simple yes today, pick up the paintbrush again, write for thirty minutes, or finally capture the idea you keep carrying around? We also challenge a common trap for Christian creatives: waiting for total certainty before moving. Often, clarity comes through movement, not before it.

We dig into what it means to be faithful with what is already in your hand and why that steady stewardship is where provision, opportunity, and direction tend to show up. Finally, we talk about learning to recognize what God is already doing in your life so you stop second guessing when results are slower than you hoped. If you’re ready to stop starting and stopping, press play, subscribe, and share this with one artist who needs a push. What’s the one small step you feel invited into right now?

The Four Steps Overview

SPEAKER_00

Have you ever felt like you have a creative calling on your life, but when it comes to actually stepping into it, you just aren't sure where to start? Well, listen, after almost 20 years and thousands of hours helping artists successfully step into their creative calling, I've discovered something really encouraging. See, the artists who start moving forward in their creative calling aren't the ones who have it all figured out. They're actually the ones who've learned to take a few specific steps in the right direction. And so today I want to show you exactly what those steps are so you can begin to step into your creative calling right now. And hey, make sure to stick with me to the very end because the last one of these steps is usually the one that most artists completely miss. And most of the time, it's actually the reason why they end up never gaining real momentum. So the very first step in stepping into your creative calling is this you got to stop dismissing the desire to create. See, so many artists feel that creative pull, that longing that keeps us just coming back for more creatively. And instead of recognizing that as something meaningful and accepting it, we end up pushing it down. They tell themselves, well, that's not practical. That's just probably me. That's not really spiritual, that's not important. But but listen, that that desire didn't just come from nowhere. God doesn't wire people, especially artists, accidentally. And while not every desire is from him, of course we know that, right? The ones that persist, the ones that keep us showing up again and again and again, the ones that align with how we know that God has created us, those are the ones that are worth paying attention to. See that creative pull that you feel? I promise you, it's not random. It's actually an invitation from God to step into more. And when you do, that's when everything changes. Now, once you recognize that desire to create is actually from Him and you really start to feel that deep down, you you got to give yourself permission to start creating, even when it's starting small. And for a lot of artists, even though this seems really simple, it can actually be pretty hard. But listen, starting right where you are isn't small, it's it's actually huge. See, as much as you might want it, you you actually don't need a five-year plan to get started. You don't need to have everything figured out in your art career. You you don't need, you know, to know how all of this is gonna work together yet. You just need to say yes. Just give God your yes. Just just say yes to what's in front of you right now. And so practically that might look like, I don't know, picking up a paintbrush again or sitting down for 30 minutes to create or writing down that idea, or maybe just creating something you love because it's in your heart. Listen, stepping into your creative calling doesn't have to start with this huge, giant leap. It just starts with a few small, faithful yeses. Now, listen, if this is really resonating with you right now, one of the biggest questions you're you might be asking is, well, okay, Matt, this is great, but how do I actually know if I'm on the right path? God's path for me as an artist. And listen, if that's you, that's exactly why I created something that I'm calling the five signs that you're on the right path as an artist, even when you feel confused or unsure of what God's doing. It's a free PDF and it's gonna help you recognize what God is already doing in your life so you can stop second guessing and actually start moving forward in confidence. Hey, if this is something that you're serious about stepping into your creative calling and knowing you're moving in the right direction right now, be sure to grab this PDF right here below. It's absolutely free, and I know it's gonna be a big blessing to you. Now, the next one really changes everything because most artists are waiting for all this clarity before they step out and and move. And listen, I get it. They mean well, they they want to honor God, they want to make the most of their time, the resources they have. Listen, I get this 100%. I still have this that temptation in my life from time to time. But listen, they're saying well-meaning things in their heart, like, God, if you'll just show me exactly what to do, I'll do it. And listen, that sounds so spiritual, doesn't it? But here's the problem. Even though it sounds spiritual, that's not actually how God works. See, sometimes, like like Moses, you know, God gives you a plan. And I love it. I love when he says, do this, go there, talk to this person. But but most of the time, God starts with an invitation based on his promises to step out into nothing. I mean, think about Abraham and so many people in the Bible, right? God, God didn't say, here's the whole roadmap. He just said, hey, go to the land that I'll show you. In other words, what? Move first, even in the darkness. And when you do, I'll meet you there. And listen, for a lot of creative people, this is where we can get stuck because we've been trained to doubt our creativity. We've been trained to think that it's not important, that it's not valid. We've been trained to second guess whether or not it's actually a way that we can make a living and actually honor God. So when that invitation from the Lord comes, a lot of people hesitate. I I've done that in my life. But listen, this is huge. Clarity from the Lord doesn't come before we move. Clarity comes through movement, as we move, as we step out in faith, even when, and maybe especially when, it doesn't make sense to your natural mind. And listen, as you do, God confirms your steps and he orders your path. Listen, if you've ever felt like, okay, you know, I can take a step and I'm willing to do that, but I gotta know. I still don't know if I'm moving in the right direction, if I'm I'm doing the right thing. And I want to help you with that as we keep going because I've felt that way a lot in my life. See, Jesus said in Matthew 25 something really key. He said, if you're faithful with little, I'm gonna entrust you with much. And this is one of the biggest keys that I found to stepping into your creative calling successfully. So you don't need more resources, you don't need more time, you don't need the perfect studio, you don't need a certain amount of money, you don't need more artistic validation. What you really need is just to be faithful with what's already in your hand, no matter how small or insignificant it might seem. Listen, whatever that looks like for you right now, just begin to thank God for it and use it to the best of your ability. Seek to grow in it. Just say yes to the next step that God has for you. Because listen, when you do that, something powerful begins to happen. God begins to show up right where you are. He meets you there. He begins to bring clarity and opportunity, he begins to bring provision into your life to take more steps. But it all starts with your faithfulness to just say yes and use what's in your hand. Just say yes and just take that next step of faith. Now, this last one is one that a lot of artists completely miss. And so if you really want to step into your creative calling, you've got to learn to recognize what God is already doing in your life. See, for most artists that love Jesus, God, God's already moving in your life, right? So the issue isn't trying to get God to move in on your behalf or praying the paint off the wall to get some kind of breakthrough to happen. Most of the time, the issue is that you just haven't quite recognized what God's doing yet. And a lot of times, it's a lot more simple than we than we realize. In fact, it can look like that desire that just won't leave you alone, that that sense of life and fulfillment when you create, though those promises in his word that just keep resonating in your heart. That that maybe that frustration uh with where you are and that desire for more or your desire to have your your art and and your life really matter. Listen, that's not all coincidence. That's not you, that's not pride, that that's God leading you. And when you start recognizing those things and taking those faithful steps and keep walking, even when you can't see the plan, that's the ground, that's the movement that God begins to move through. That's when things begin to shift. See, friends, here's the truth. A lot of artists are willing to take the next step, but when things don't look the way they expect or when they don't happen as as quickly as they hoped, we can start to second guess ourselves. And they start and they stop and they never gain any real momentum. And listen, that's not because God is not at work. That doesn't mean that God's not got a plan for your life, that you're not supposed to be an artist. It just means that you don't quite yet understand that real clear path. And again, that's exactly why I created this free guide for you because it's gonna help you see clearly what God is already doing in your life. So you can stop second guessing yourself and start moving forward in confidence. Listen, if you haven't already, grab that free PDF. I promise it's gonna be a big, big blessing in your life.
