Holy Week: The Burial of Jesus
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The Gospels record that Jesus was laid in the tomb and that His followers rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment. On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found it empty. Jesus appeared to her, and when He spoke her name, she recognized Him. This account shows that Jesus rose from the dead and reveals that He knows His followers and calls them personally, fulfilling His words as the Good Shepherd.

The Sabbath And The Burial Timeline
SPEAKER_02Welcome back, everyone, to our pot our uh Teach Me the Bible podcast. My name is Tim Webb here with David Klingler. And David, we are on day seven. We're looking at the burial. So we've been saying Sunday's a coming. And uh but this I think sometimes we skip over this part, but there's still some things that we should bring up, right?
Four Gospels And The Morning Details
Peter And John Run To The Tomb
Mary Weeps And Sees The Angels
He Calls Her By Name
Dr. David KlinglerYeah, so um just uh there there's a day in between uh that we kind of the gospels don't say much about. So we don't want to make a sermon of the baby. We don't want to bring something that's not there. But remember, Saturday, uh this is uh this is the Sabbath, and and the Gospel of Mark in uh Mark chapter 16 makes the point that when the Sabbath was over, right? And so Jesus is buried on uh uh on the the the the Friday. Remember the Sabbath begins at about uh evening, right? Uh evening light, uh and uh the Sabbath continues all the way until um till first light. Right, sunrise. Uh until uh till first light, till sunlight sunrise. And so uh so the Sabbath was over, and Mary Magdalene and Mary the other uh Mary, the Mary uh the mother of James, uh brought spices that they might come and anoint Jesus. And very early on the first day of the week they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. Now um they're making the point that the sun had risen. All right. And uh and you get this same thing back in uh uh in uh uh Matthew, and now uh after the Sabbath it came about uh as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, right? And so these gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, and even Luke and Luke chapter 24, uh they're making the point uh that uh you know that the Sabbath was over. But John, interestingly, makes makes the point that while it was still dark, right? Now, why is he doing that? Now, this is in John uh chapter 20. So remember the Sabbath, they they had sat and they had waited. Uh and the Sabbath has taken place, Jesus is buried, he's in the tomb. I can't imagine how long that day would have seemed for them. Right. Um, but uh uh as is uh you know you find fairly normally uh in the Bible, um these women of faith, uh now the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene, came early to the tomb while it was still dark, and saw that the stone was already taken away from the tomb, and she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple who Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken away our Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they've laid him. And Peter therefore went forth, and uh and the other disciple, this would have probably been John, and they were running together to the tomb, and when the two were running together, the other disciple ran faster than Peter. John usually talks about himself in the third person, right? Yeah. Um and came to the tomb first, and stooping down and looking in, he saw the linens lying there, and he did not go in, and Peter therefore also uh came following him and entered the tomb, uh, and he beheld the the linen wrappings laying there, and the face cloth which had been uh on his head, not uh lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in its own place. So the other disciple who had uh come first to the tomb entered then also, and they saw and they believed, for as yet they did not understand the scripture that he must rise from the dead. So the disciples went away to their own homes. Um it's interesting to uh to to read this, and and what what is presented in in all four of the get the disciple uh the gospels is the reader gets to walk along with the disciples and discover things as they discover them, right? And so they're still figuring this out. The Holy Spirit is going to uh be given to them uh in the Gospel of John. This is going to happen in chapter uh uh it uh in um uh later in in uh in the book in chapter 20, uh received uh the the the spirit, and this spirit's going to help them call to remembrance all that Jesus said and did to them, and then they're gonna start to put this together uh with the Old Testament. But I love this next uh this next section in chapter 20 says, but Mary was standing outside of the tomb and weeping, and so as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb. Um I I always wonder what uh the other two um left, right? Um they didn't understand what had happened, but Mary's still there and she's outside the tomb and she's weeping. And so as she wept, she stooped down and she looked in the tomb, and behold, two angels uh in white sitting, one at the head and one at the foot, where the body of Jesus had been laying. And they said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? And she said, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they've laid him. And uh when she said this, she turned around and behold, Jesus was standing there. But she didn't know it was Jesus yet. She didn't know it was him. And he said to her, Woman, Why are you weeping? Who are you seeking? Boy, those words of Jesus at his arrest still ringing in the ear of the reader. What who are you seeking? Supposing him to be a gardener, said, Uh Sir, if you've carried him away, tell me where you've laid him, and I may uh that I may take him away. And he said to her, Mary. And she turned and she said to him in Hebrew, Raboni, which means uh teacher. Now, um a couple things here to point out that that go in the this story of the Gospel of John. Uh this whole light and darkness uh theme that has been running throughout, it goes throughout all the scriptures, but John is really using it here. Uh, that the light shined in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. Yeah, could not overcome it. And so here's the light. And so she's coming at at dark, she doesn't understand it, beckons back to Jesus' interaction with uh Nicodemus back in chapter three, coming at night, doesn't understand. Uh, but she's about to. The the second thing, which is just uh uh I just love this. Um it is when Jesus said her name. Right. This uh back in John chapter uh 10, this uh this great uh um these great words. Yes. Um truly, truly I say to you, uh he's talking about these ones who are thieves and robbers, these uh Pharisees who try to enter in some other way. Um but he who enters by the door, he is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, the father opens the door for the son, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own by name and leads them out. Right. Uh it is when she calls him by name, and I I just wonder if Jesus would have would uh uh show up today. We may not recognize him, you know, maybe the Shekinah glory that might give him way. But interestingly, Mary turns and she sees the resurrected Lord, she doesn't recognize him until he calls her by name, and then she recognizes him, and uh and uh she's the one who carries the message back to the disciples that the Lord has been risen. I have seen the Lord, verse 18. Mary came announcing to the disciples, I have seen the Lord. And he said these things to her, and uh and so uh the um uh it wouldn't isn't it just like the Lord that uh uh you would expect that uh he would appear to the you know to the greatest among the disciples first, right? That's what we would do.
SPEAKER_02Yes, that's how we would orchestrate this thing.
Light And Darkness In John
Personal Faith And Coming Deliverance
Next Steps And Closing Invitation
Dr. David KlinglerYeah, yeah. We need to appear to the most important people first. Uh that's not how the Lord has ever worked. That's not how Jesus uh revealed himself after his resurrection, but uh to uh the lowly woman, but she was faithful, and he calls her by name. And uh it's just a sweet, uh uh sweet passage. And and so, you know, that we're we're jumping ahead a little bit. This is Saturday, we're talking about uh, you know, we're talking about things that happen on Sunday morning, but there's a lot more that's gonna happen uh later uh in this uh this Sunday morning resurrection. And so we're we're spending some time talking uh about it here. But uh but you know, we we talk often about how the uh uh when we believe in the Lord, we uh enter into the body of Christ, into this community of believers. Um uh but your faith is individual. Uh and uh the Lord loves the church and the Lord loves his bride, but he calls each one by name. Yes, he knows your name, right? Uh He knows your sorrows, he knows your afflictions, and he can sympathize with them. That doesn't mean that he's going to necessarily deliver you from those sorrows and sufferings today. But deliverance is coming. Yes, the king is coming, and so we don't mourn like those who have no hope. Uh just like Mary, our faith is in the resurrected Christ. And she saw him first, but we will see him. Amen. And uh, and so that's the day we're looking for. Yeah. I I'm uh amazed uh that all of the disciple writers, they know that all the the the New Testament writers, they know that they're gonna write to people who've never seen him, they've never touched him, they've never heard his voice, but they believe. They're gonna believe through his words, and and uh and so there we there's a day coming when our faith will be sight. Yes. And that's gonna be a good day. That's gonna be a great day. Amen. So be encouraged. Yes. Um tomorrow we're uh as we uh uh we uh continue our discussion, uh we're gonna see how this story ends and how Jesus is faithful in restoring his disciples, those who are lowly of heart and have lost their hope and uh and are discouraged, and he's gonna raise them up and he's gonna send them on their way. He is so faithful. He is.
SPEAKER_02He is. Thank you, David. And join us again. Please come back for another day as we wrap up our Passion Week. Thank you.
