John 20 records the resurrection of Jesus Christ and His appearances to His disciples. Mary Magdalene finds the empty tomb and sees the risen Lord. Jesus appears to the disciples, gives them peace, shows His wounds, and sends them as the Father sent Him. Thomas later sees Jesus and believes, declaring, “My Lord and my God.” This chapter shows that Jesus is risen, fulfills the Scriptures, and gives life to those who believe in His name.

Welcome back, everyone, to our Teach Me the Bible podcast. My name is Tim Webb here with David Klingler, and we are on day eight. David, already, and uh in this discussion where we we've talked some about the resurrection, but now after Mary Magdalene has uh gone and said what the Lord has said to her, and she's seen the risen Lord. What's the deal with the disciples? Um John kind of changes gears here, but they have as well.

Peace Be With You Appears

Thomas Doubts Then Worships

Why These Signs Are Written

Fishing Again Then Peter Restored

Dr. David Klingler

Yes. So we pick it up in John chapter 20, verse 19. Uh, remember Mary has seen uh the risen uh Lord in the morning, uh, and she's gone and explained this that she has seen uh the resurrected Christ. But now it's evening, right? And so as John presents it, it's been uh the rest of the day. Yeah, the whole day. Yeah, therefore it was evening on that uh first day of the week um when uh when the doors were shut. And the disciples were for fear, were living in fear of the Jews. Well, Peter has sure changed his tune here, hasn't he? Yes. Uh Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. And uh man, what a statement. How do you how do you respond to that? And when he said this, uh he showed them his hands and his side, and his disciples therefore rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus therefore uh said to them again, Peace be with you, as the Father has sent me, I send you. Repeating again this John chapter uh chapters 13 through 17. As the Father has sent me into the world, I send you. Uh remember, um, you know, I go to the Father where I go, you can't go, you won't see me, but then you will see me for a while, and since I live, uh you will also live. All of these words, I can only imagine, the words that he has just spoken them a few nights before, uh, in this uh extensive discussion. What we call the sermon or the uproom discourse is it's got to be flooding back into their into their memory. Uh and uh and when he said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit, uh, this spirit, the helper, uh, I will send and I will uh give you this helper, and he will convict the world of sin. And uh, but for their ministry, for the apostles' ministry, the disciples' ministry, now they're they're turning from followers of Christ to be sent ones of Christ, they're uh from disciples, followers to apostles uh sent out, uh, there are going to need the ministry of the Holy Spirit to call to their remembrance all that he said to them. Uh and this is what John is writing. He's testifying concerning the words and works of Jesus. And we're getting them written in this book. And then he says, If you forgive the sins of any, the sins, their sins have been forgiven them. In other words, if you make them clean, if you make them pure, if you preach to them the word and they receive the word and uh and they uh respond to the word, if you retain the sins, uh they will be retained. But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. And the other disciples therefore were saying to him, uh, We have seen the Lord. Uh, but he said to them, Unless I see his hands and the imprints of his nails. And of course, this is what the disciples have already seen. He's showing this to them. He says, I want to see this, unless I see the imprint of the nails in his hands, and unless I see the finger, I put my finger in that place of where the nail uh the nails and put my hand in his side, I will not believe. That's a pretty intense statement there. It is. Yes, it is. Now, um, and we're gonna see why this is so important and why this is relevant to us, right? And after eight days, um, again, eight days, his disciples were inside, and Thomas this time was with them. And they uh the the the doors having been shut, they're still locked up, they're still, you know, they're not doing their job, they're not proclaiming the resurrection of the Christ. He stood in their midst and he said, Peace be with you. And then he said to Thomas, Reach here your fingers and see my hands, and reach here your hand, and put it into my side. Be not unbelieving, but be believing. And Thomas's response, My Lord and my God. And Jesus said, Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are all those who did not see yet believe. And of course, this is this is in the past tense, talking about those Old Testament uh prophets, all those Old Testament uh John the Baptist, all those people who are longing to see his day. And now these disciples have seen his day and looking forward, and this looks forward to us. Uh, this is uh going to be in 1 John. You know, in 1 John, John is going to communicate, and he knows Peter is going to say the same thing that he's going to write these words to people who've never seen Jesus. Um and and through the ministry of the Spirit, they're going to believe, they're going to believe the gospel. And so John is going to write this in 1 John. What was from the beginning and what we have heard, and what we have seen with our eyes, and what we beheld with our hands. We stuck our hands in those holes. We we felt those scars. We uh the life was revealed, and we have seen and bear witness and proclaimed to you all the eternal life which was with the Father and was revealed to us. And what we have seen and what we have heard, we proclaim to you also, so that y'all may have fellowship with us, is indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with the Son. And these things we write so that our joy may be made complete. John the Baptist's joy was made complete when he revealed the Father. Uh, Jesus' joy was made complete when he revealed the Father to the disciples. And now you're looking for the disciples' joy to be made complete when they reveal the Son to the believers. Uh they proclaim the name of the Son and they believe him. So here we are, um, you know, long way removed from this scene. Um we've never seen him, uh, we've never heard his voice, and we've never stuck our fingers in those scars. Right. But we've believed because of the words of the apostles and prophets. And so just as Jesus uh was sent into the word, uh, into the world by the Father, and then he uh chooses his disciples that were given to him by the Father, and he sends them out into the world to proclaim the word of the Lord. In that word, we're gonna track this through the New Testament. That word is handed down generation after generation after generation. Luke talks about this at the beginning of his gospel. Uh, just as those who were write witnesses and servants of the word handed them down to us, it seemed fitting for me as way, uh well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning to write it out to you to the office. Paul's gonna tell, uh tell Timothy, the words which you've heard from me, teach the faithful men who are able to teach others. And so the eyewitness account has been handed down. It's been handed down to us. And so uh we believe in the words of the apostles and prophets. We have placed our faith in the resurrected Christ as uh explained, as uh proclaimed by the apostles, right? Uh and so in this uh last scene, the John chapter uh 20 uh scene, um doubting Thomas uh doubts. And Jesus says, Blessed are all those in the Old Testament who did not see but believed. And going forward in the future, uh all those who are going to believe in the words of John, in the words of Matthew, in the words of John Mark, who gets these words from Peter and from Paul and from and Luke, who gets these words from Paul, all they're gonna believe these words, uh, and those words are going to give them life. Right. Uh and so Jesus uh John uh finishes uh his uh mission, his statement for the book. Many other signs Jesus therefore did in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these were written so that you might believe, the reader might believe that Jesus is the Christ, and believing you would have life in his name. And you would expect it to be the end, that's it. But that's not the end of the story. Right. Something else. Well, the reason that's not the end of the story is because the disciples are still gathering up, they're still in fear. Uh the the resurrected Christ has appeared to them uh now, at least twice, that we know of from the Gospel of John, uh, once the evening of his resurrection, then eight days later, he is uh they've seen the resurrection of the Christ, but they haven't got it. They they have not understood what they have been commissioned to do. That that uh Jesus' high priestly prayer in chapter 17, I pray not only for these, but for all those who will believe in me through their word. I've cleansed them, I've given them the words for eternal life. Now they've got to go and they've got to proclaim it. And so after these things, the disciples are fishing.

SPEAKER_01

They're all there, right? Well, first three, Simon Peter says, I'm going fishing. Yeah.

Resurrection Changes Everything

Dr. David Klingler

Yeah, chapter 21, verse 3, uh, I'm going fishing. Uh we'll come with you. And they went out and it wasn't night, and they didn't catch anything, and uh, and the day was uh breaking. Again, that John's imagery of darkness and then the day breaking and light, and Jesus was on the beach uh and they didn't uh uh uh recognize him and he said, Children, do you have any fish? They said, No. Uh cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will have a catch. And they cast it, therefore, uh, and they were not able to haul it in. And the disciple, uh, therefore, whom Jesus loves, said to Peter, It is the Lord. And I love Peter's response. He just jumps overboard, right? He threw himself. I love that. He threw himself into the sea, and his other disciples came in the little boat, and they were not far off from the land, just uh uh a hundred yards or so, and uh and uh and here we get this uh restoration. Jesus had created uh had uh had prepared breakfast for them uh on the shore, uh, and uh and then the this great exchange between uh the Lord and and Peter um Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? Lord, you know that I love you. Feed my sheep, feed my lambs. Um and he said again a second time, Do you love me? Lord, you you know that I love you. Shepherd my sheep. Um Simon, do you love me? Uh and Peter was grieved because he he had asked him a third time and he said that you know all things, uh, and you know that I love you. Then feed my sheep. Truly, truly I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished. And uh and when you're when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will gurge you and bring you where you do not wish to go. And they were signifying this and how uh uh he was going to uh to die and and uh followed me. Uh, you know, um several things here. First, uh you remember back in in chapter 15, those who don't bear fruit, the branch that abides in me but doesn't bear fruit, the Lord lifts up. And here Peter has denied him three times. Um and now the resurrected Lord is lifting him up, and he's gonna go and he's gonna bear fruit, and he's gonna bear a bunch of fruit. In fact, we're gonna track with Peter through the uh through the book of Acts, through his ministry, and it's through Peter's proclamation of the gospel. Peter's a changed man. We can we we the next time we we really see Peter is in Acts chapter two, and he is Peter on fire. It is just amazing to watch Peter's ministry as we go through the book of Acts, but uh but the Lord is faithful, he restores Peter. Uh the words of the uh the disciples have been proclaimed, and so now through the resurrected Christ, through the words of the apostles and prophets, we have eternal life through faith in his name. Uh and so um um I can't think of anything else uh that is more important in the history of all of mankind than these events, than the resurrection of Christ, his appearing to his disciples, uh his restoring them, uh, and uh sending them out. Right. And uh and I guess you know, one of the things that always encourages me about this Peter story is uh uh if you walk very long in your faith, you'll let you'll feel like you let the Lord down. Um well he couldn't use me. Well, I I promise you. You didn't let the Lord down quote, let you know, put that air close, let the Lord down. Like Peter, uh you know, Peter said, I'll follow you anywhere. No, you won't. And immediately he doesn't uh that very night. What a what a tough uh yeah following. But the Lord restores him, yeah, right. Uh and you know the Lord uh throughout all of his story continues to use broken people with deficiencies and failures and uh and he and he uses them and he uses them greatly.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, Peter. The the lesson that you're teaching me today is just in that translating accurately his word, uh lift up. Not bearing fruit, lift up and him lifting up Peter, it's really uh convicting me as a pastor that you know to be very careful when we condemn and criticize. But we should rather lift up with the word. There's this cleansing purifying with the word, redirecting, and and Christ came along beside him, just lifted him up, encouraged him, and Peter takes off.

Dr. David Klingler

Yeah. And he's you know, and the Lord is and the Christ, he's compassionate and gracious and slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth, always has been, still is. Uh how many times should we uh forgive our brother? Well, how many times has the Lord forgiven you? Yes, right, again and again and again, and we say, Well, I've I've uh uh I've let the Lord down. There's no way he can use me now. Yes, he can. Yes, yes, he can. Uh and and so uh be encouraged, this resurrection. Uh if this doesn't change everything in your life, then you need to go back and re-examine the resurrection. This changes everything.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

Dr. David Klingler

Uh it changes the way we live, it changes the way we die, it changes the way we view life, it changes the way we view death, it changes the way we view our brethren, uh, brothers, our sisters, our family, it changes everything about us. So we say, well, how does the Bible apply to us? I say, how does it not? Amen. If if there is resurrection, this changes everything. Everything. Every single facet, every single part of your life is changed. Um if there is no resurrection, nothing is changed. This is just man's religion to make you feel better about yourself, to do something. Right. Uh and so uh above all else, all of history, uh, meaning of life uh rests on this resurrection.

unknown

Yes.

Dr. David Klingler

And because he was raised, so you shall be raised. And so be encouraged. Yes. The king is risen. Amen. He's risen indeed.
