Hey everybody, welcome back to Teach Me the Bible Podcast. My name is Phil Porter alongside Dr. David Klingler, and today we are in Leviticus chapter 26. It's uh a chapter that many of you may have already heard of, known, or read, and had a ton of context around. Uh I know you speak about it a lot. Um, I've heard you preach very many a lot of times and teach. And so um, yeah, we're excited to jump in today. We're getting towards the end of the book. Uh, it doesn't mean that the book concludes it. You'll you'll soon see that it just continues. But um, but for today, we're in chapter 26 and we are ready to take in how this ties into the story and what Moses is trying to communicate to Israel.
Torah As The Lens For History
Dr. David KlinglerYeah, I'm trying to figure out, I've been thinking about lately why are Leviticus, dude, why is the law, you know, Genesis to Deuteronomy so important to understand the Bible? Uh first it's it's the beginning of the story. If you don't understand the beginning of the story, the rest of the story is not going to make any sense. But this is the instruction given to Israel on how, you know, it's like this is the deal, this is the covenant, this is uh the relationship that the Lord has struck with Israel. If you do this, I will operate this way. But if you do, if but if you don't, then I will do these things. And so the instruction is really important. Um, it gives you kind of the interpretive lens by which to understand the story. If Israel's doing what's good and right in the eyes of the Lord, if they're following the commands, all is well. Um and we don't know when they did and didn't. Uh by that I mean there's not a daily account of today was a good day, uh, and everybody kind of did right in the eyes of the Lord, and we followed the law. Um but the narrator of these later stories, we call it the Deuteronomic History, Joshua, uh, Judges, Samuel Kings, uh, these words are these these books that follow the book of Deuteronomy, follow the law, they can only be interpreted, understood in light of the law. And so if you don't know Torah, then you don't know what the narrator, the storyteller, is trying to communicate in how they are telling the story. Uh we're gonna get this uh uh today, in uh quite a bit uh today. Uh and so Deuteronomy uh chapter 28 through 32, Leviticus chapter 26, these are uh really uh Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28 go together. They're the blessings and curses. If you follow me, if you listen to my commands, if you do what I told you to do, then this is how it will go for you in the land. But if you don't listen to me, and if you reject me, and if you rebel, and if you go after foreign gods, then this is what will happen. Uh in Israel's history, that's what happens, right? And Deuteronomy chapter 30 is going to expand on this even more. Deuteronomy 29, the Lord has not yet given Israel eyes to see, ears to hear, heart to know. Deuteronomy 30. But when uh you have experienced these curses that are coming upon you because you won't follow, and you return to the Lord, then he will return you to the land. And this is gonna set out the template for Deuteronomy 32, which is the story of Israel's history, and it's the story of the history of the world, right? And so this becomes really important. So we're gonna see this as we go through here today. So we'll pick
Blessings For Obedience In The Land
Dr. David Klinglerit up in 26.1. Uh you shall not make for yourselves idols, nor shall you set up for yourself an image or a pillar. Uh you shall uh not place stone figures or uh you know engraved stones in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God. You shall keep my Sabbaths, you shall fear my holy place or my sanctuary. I am the Lord. If you walk in my statutes and you keep my commandments and you carry them out, then I will give you the rains in your season, the land will yield its fruit, the trees will produce their fruit, your th threshing floor, your your threshing will last until the grape harvest, the grapes will last until it's sowing time, uh, and you shall thus eat and be full and live securely in the land. And I will grant you peace in the land, uh, so that uh you will lay down with no one to make you tremble, and I will eliminate the harmful beast from your land, and no sword shall pass through your land. This uh verses six through eight, uh Leviticus twenty-six, six through eight, uh your you shall chase your enemies, they will fall before you by the four uh sword, small numbers will chase large numbers, they will fall by the sword. Um this the um in the book of Samuel, first Samuel 17, when the narrator tells about the story of David and Goliath, this is the story. Um David comes in uh to Saul, um Israel is in fear, the enemies are in the land. Goliath is out there with his sword, which is going to play a central role in the in the story of uh of Samuel, first and second Samuel. Uh, and they're in fear. And um, you know, you you'll remember the the story. Saul says, You're but a youth, and he's been a warrior since his youth. And David says, Yeah, but I've killed the lion and the bear. Little boys don't kill lions and bears. I have watched the Lord's faithfulness as he's eliminated the harmful beast from the land. Therefore, let me add him, right? And he goes at him, and and the enemies perish by this uh the sword, and the small numbers chase the large numbers.
David And Goliath As Covenant Proof
Dr. David KlinglerAnd so this uh this is the story. This is one of the many stories that uh that this type of thing happens. And so uh Leviticus 26, 6 through 8 is is the David and Goliath story uh in just a few verses, right? This is uh then the narrator saying, See what's happening here. David is being faithful, uh, the Lord is keeping his covenant promises, and Israel is having success in the land. Uh verse uh nine, uh I will uh turn towards you and make you fruitful and multiply you, I will confirm my covenant with you. Um uh you will eat old uh and clear out the old because of the new. Moreover, I will make my dwelling place among you, and my soul will not reject you. I will walk among you. This is very much the garden imagery. I will walk among you, I will be your God, you will be my people. Hold on to that language, because um uh if Israel rebels against the Lord, then they he will not be their God, and they will not be his people. This is the story of Hosea the prophet. Uh go marry Gomer, have children with her, and one of the uh Lo Ami, not my people, for you are not my God, and I am not your people. Uh if you don't understand Leviticus, if you don't understand the covenant, you won't understand uh the uh uh the prophets. Yeah, Jeremiah. Jeremiah, all this, yeah. So it's all going to just continue to play out. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, uh, so that you would not be their slaves. I broke the bar of your yoke and made you walk erect. But if you do not obey, uh uh obey me, and if you do not carry out these commands, and if you reject my statutes, if my soul, uh if your soul um hates, abores, uh abhors my uh ordinances, and you will not carry out all my commandments and break my covenant, I in turn will do this to you. I will appoint over you sudden fear, consumption, uh fever. Um this is the same word uh when Jesus is uh uh Peter's mother-in-law, uh Peter's uh, you know, she's suffering from fever. Uh this is the same, you know, you know, just showing the judgments. Jesus comes, he heals the blind, he causes the lame to walk, the deaf to all this. All of these judgments that Jesus is coming to address uh will be found in Deuteronomy 28, Leviticus 26, these passages. Um uh you will be consumed with uh fever, uh wasting away of your eyes, cause your soul to pine away. Uh you will soul uh sow your seed uselessly, for the enemies will come and they will eat it. I will set my face against you. Instead of uh causing my face to shine upon you, this is going to be the you know, kind of the priestly
Curses Begin And Judgment Escalates
Dr. David Klinglerum uh blessing uh in numbers. Uh instead of causing my face to shine upon you, uh be in your presence, I will set my face against you, and you'll be struck down before your enemies. Uh and those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when no one is pursuing you. If after these things you do not obey me, then I will punish you sevenfold for your sins. Uh in other words, if the Lord judges you, the the purpose for the judgment was repentance. If you don't repent, then you'll be judged sevenfold for your sin. I will also break down your pride of power. Uh I will make the sky like iron and the earth like bronze. Uh the rain won't fall, uh, and uh the ground will be hard as a rock. You see this when the real the rains don't fall. Your strength will be spent uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce, the trees of the land will not produce their fruit. If then you act with hostility against me, if you're unwilling to obey me, I will increase uh the plagues upon you sevenfold for your sin. This is gonna be repeated all the way through here, sevenfold, sevenfold, sevenfold. Um I will let loose among you the beasts of the field, the the ones that you know caused the beasts of the field to perish. Now I'm gonna turn them loose uh uh upon you. Uh and uh you will be uh uh left of your children, and I will destroy your cattle, I reduce your number, so that your roads lie uh uh deserted. If after these things you have not turned to me, uh that would be the word shoe, repent, return, return to me, uh, but act with hostility against me, then I will act with hostility against you, and I will strike you again sevenfold for your sin. I will bring upon you the sword, um, which will execute vengeance for the covenant. Uh and when you gather together your cities, I will send pestilence against you, uh, and you will be delivered into the hand of your enemies. I will break your the staff of your bread. Ten women will bake bread uh in one oven. They will bring back your bread in rationed amounts, so that you will eat and not be satisfied. This is all the way through here. If you follow the Lord, uh you will uh eat and be satisfied, but if you do not follow the Lord, you will not eat and you will not be satisfied. This is Jesus feeding the 4,000, feeding the 5,000. They ate and were satisfied. Ruth going to uh into Boaz's field, she ate and was satisfied. This is going to be covenant language all the way through the Bible. Yet in spite of this, if you do not obey me, if you do not listen to me, if you act with hostility against me, then I will act with wrath, wrathful hostility against you, and I will punish you sevenfold for your sin. Furthermore, you will eat the flesh of your sons, the flesh of your daughters you will eat. Uh, there are some who have tried to say, well, this is just, you know, kind of um prophetic language, it's over the kind of over the top language. This this happens. Uh this is in the the book of Lamentations. Uh when uh uh Israel is under siege, uh the Babylonians are there, um, this type of thing is going to happen in Old Testament, Israel's history. I will uh then I will destroy your high places, the high places that you were supposed to cut down, I'll cut them down. Uh, and cut down your uh incense altars, which you were supposed to cut down. Um I will heap your remains uh of the remains of your idols, for my whole uh my soul hates uh hates your idols, hates you, um, abhors you. If you abhor me, if you reject me, I will I will respond in kind. I will lay your cities waste uh as well, I will make your sanctuaries desolate. Uh I will not smell your soothing aromas. Uh, you know, I won't be satisfied by your your your uh restful aromas, your your um uh elote is the word here. It's the cause the the the the smell to go up. This was the wrath of the Lord being calmed after the flood. Uh and so you uh there will be no stopping of my wrath. I will pour out my wrath upon the land, I will make your land desolate, your enemies who settle uh in the land will be appalled over it. However, uh you I will scatter among the nations, and I will draw the sword after you, and your land uh becomes desolate, and your cities will become a waste. Then the land will enjoy its Sabbaths all the days of the desolation, while you are in your enemy's land. Then the land will
Exile And The Land’s Sabbath Rest
Dr. David Klinglerrest and enjoy its Sabbath. This is what's going to happen in Jeremiah chapter 29, right? This is the reason why Israel is being kicked out of the land for 70 years, because they never kept the Sabbath. This is Leviticus chapter 20, 26. If you don't know Leviticus 26, if you don't know the instruction, uh the instruction that we just uh did last time and the uh these passages leading up to it, the the Sabbath year, the uh year of Jubilee, then you're not gonna understand Jeremiah 29. Uh, and you're not gonna understand Daniel chapter 9. Uh in Jeremiah 29, there's 70 years that are pronounced. And if Israel repents, they would be restored to the land. There was a partial restoration to the land. They're going to rebuild the temple, rebuild the walls, but there's only a partial restoration. Um at the end of the 70 years, this is in Daniel chapter 9, Daniel prays to the Lord, says, Lord, 70 years are up. The land has enjoyed its covenant rest. The Lord's response through the angel is, but Israel has not repented. And so now 70 times seven, they translate it weeks, seventy weeks, but the word weeks just means sevens. Seventy sevens, sevenfold judgment is being poured out. And it's going to begin with the decree. Uh, and this decree in uh uh in 444 is going to set the clock, and this is going to start the 444 BC to start uh the clock. Uh, and it's uh only then will the payment be made. And we'll we'll uh cover that here in just a minute. Uh this is going to be an uh uh the land will enjoy, they translated enjoy its sabbathrists, uh make amends in 40. So this is uh uh 2634. The land will enjoy this word here that's being used for enjoy its Sabbath rests uh is the word uh to uh to to redeem or make payment for. Then the then then the uh the
Daniel 9 And Isaiah’s Paid-For Sin
Dr. David Klinglerpayment that is necessary, the land will uh the Sabbath rest will be paid uh when you're kicked out of the land. We're gonna return back to this here in just a few verses. We'll pick that up that discussion. All the days of its desolation, it will observe its rest, uh, which uh did not uh was not observed uh while you were living in it. And all those who may be left, uh I will bring about weakness in their hearts in the lands of their enemies. Uh this is uh terrifying. Uh the sound of a leaf driven by the wind will chase them. This is um uh and no one uh when no one is pursuing them, and they will flee as though it was they were running from a full uh from a sword, and they will fall. That level of fear and trembling will be uh they will therefore stumble uh over each other as if they were running from the sword, although no one is pursuing them, uh, and you will have no one uh to no no strength to stand up before your enemies, but you will perish among the nations, and your enemies uh in your enemy's land uh you will be consumed. So that you who are left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of their enemies, uh, and also because of the iniquities of the forefathers, they will rot away among them. If they confess their iniquity, and if their iniquity uh they confess the iniquity of their fathers, this is what Daniel is trying to do in Daniel chapter nine, and but Israel has not repented. Um their unfaithfulness uh which they have committed against me, and also in acting of their hostility against me. I was acting in hostility against them, I will bring them into the land of their uh enemies, or in the uh or in their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled because uh then then, so that then they make an uh amends for their iniquity. In other words, if they repent, this making amends for their iniquity, this is an interesting word. It's not a common word, it's only only shows up uh uh I think about eight or nine times, maybe in the Old Testament. Uh Leviticus 30, uh 30 26, 34, 41, 43. But the next time it shows up is in Isaiah. In Isaiah, speak kindly to Jerusalem and call out to her, for her warfare has ended, that her iniquity has been paid for. It's been removed. Her sins have been paid for. She has received from the Lord's hand double for her sins. Now, uh Isaiah 40, verse 1, uh comfort, come, comfort my people Israel, says the Lord. For a voice is calling in the wilderness, clear the way for the Lord. So this payment is going to be made at the time of Messiah the Christ, John the Baptist is the voice crying in the wilderness. And so uh this is also going to tie to uh uh Daniel chapter nine, that this payment's going to be made when the Christ appears, and he is going to make payment for the land, to make amends for the iniquity of Israel. Uh then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac, and I will remember my covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land, for the land will be abandoned by them, and I will make up for the Sabbath, while uh it was made desolate without them. Uh they meanwhile uh will be making amends for their iniquity, because they have rejected my ordinances, and my soul, uh their soul uh has hated my statutes. Yet in spite of all this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will uh not reject them, nor will I uh hate them so as to destroy them, I will not abhor them so as to destroy them, breaking my covenant with them. In other words, I'm not gonna break my covenant, I'm gonna keep my covenant. They reject me, I will judge them. Um, the purpose of the judgment was to bring them to repentance, and they will repent, I will cause them to walk in my ways. We're gonna get more of this in Deuteronomy chapter 30. And this is what's gonna be repeated throughout all of the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel. Jeremiah is gonna talk about a new covenant with the house of Israel, with the house of Judah. Ezekiel 36, they're gonna be restored to the land. Uh, all of these prophets are going to say the same thing. Uh, and this was how the church understood these things for the first few centuries
God Keeps Covenant And Israel’s Future
Dr. David Klinglerof the church. It wasn't until, you know, the uh maybe the fourth century, beginning of the fourth century, that this uh view started to change. Uh, and that uh this idea that the church had replaced Israel. The promises made to Israel in the Old Testament concerning the kingdom were being fulfilled by the church in the New Covenant, uh, New Testament, uh, which was which they would call the New Covenant. This was not um how things were understood in the first uh uh couple centuries of the church. And um uh and so there is still a future for Israel. Paul's gonna talk about this in Romans chapter 9, Deuteronomy chapter 32. All the prophets are gonna say the same thing, and so either the words of the prophets are going to come to pass, the words of Moses are going to come to pass, or they were all false prophets. Um I'm gonna put myself on the side of the prophets and Moses, yeah, uh, and not change all the meaning of all the words. And there's a lot to be uh we're we're opening up a can of worms here, I know, but but uh but this is a very important. Um, what gives someone the right to change some words or the church the right to change some words and not change other words, change the meaning of words? Um this has led to tragic consequences throughout church history, uh, and I would recommend that we not do it. Um and then not only do the do the scriptures make sense, uh, but they all agree. Uh, and it's playing out. Uh, I think that it's hard to argue today that the world is getting better, that this is the kingdom, and the kingdom is expanding, and um and the gospel is winning. Um, you know, we're we're in the United States, it is. I I spent some time in Europe here recently, uh in many ways. Ways the the the the the culture is post-Christian. Um not only is the is the are the cultures, the Western cultures, which used to be Christian cultures, we can put that in quotes because we we we need to define those terms, but now the churches are post-Christian churches. These and we're seeing this all over today, uh all over the internet. Uh quote pastors, and I'll put quotes around them. Uh they're they're not pastors of any kind, they're not teaching the scriptures, they're false teachers, uh, and they do not believe Christianly anymore. Uh the church is no longer teaching Christian doctrine. Um we could define that as the the those who claim to be the church. Uh, but there's always been a believing remnant, a faithful remnant, uh, and there definitely needs to be one today. So anyway, so the Lord's going to keep his promises. Uh, this is back to verse 44, Leviticus uh 26, 44. Yet in spite of this, uh, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them. I will not hate them so as to destroy them, I will not abhor them so as to destroy them. Even though they abhorred my commandments, I will not uh and I abhor them back to judge them, I will not abhor them so as to destroy them, breaking my covenant with them, for I am the Lord their God. That that that's hard language to get around, uh unless you're willing to change all kinds of words to make this work. And then I'm saying, well, why are you gonna change some words and not others? Um uh and they will say, Well, because of of how church history went. And I'm going, Well, then don't criticize people for interpreting the Bible in light of the newspaper, because that's what you're doing. You're changing definitions because of what was happening in church history. No, you are to interpret church history, world history in light of the scriptures, not the other way around, right? Verse 45, but I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God, I am the Lord. Again, how do you get around this? Um, Gentiles uh were not brought out of Egypt in the sight of the nations. Israel was brought out of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be there, Israel's God, I am the Lord. It's like uh throwing down the gauntlet or hitting the gavel on the table, or or you know, you know, saying, Thus says the Lord. Period. I am the Lord, I will do it. And we're gonna see this language repeated throughout. So uh verse 46, these are the statutes and the ordinances and the laws which the Lord established between himself and the sons of Israel, not the Gentiles of the nations who have attached themselves to the Lord uh through faith in Messiah, through the sons of Israel, uh, through Moses at Mount Sinai. Now, what will happen is people will say, Well, we are sons uh of Abraham uh through faith. Yes, that's that's Galatians, and that's Paul's argument in Galatians. Um, but that does not make Gentiles Israel. There are actually two groups all the way through uh the book of Galatians. So you don't start in Galatians, uh you enter, you understand Galatians, and what Paul's saying is exactly um in keeping with what he says in Romans. And Romans is in keeping with what he quotes out of Deuteronomy 32 and what he quotes in all of those Old Testament passages, all the prophets. And so this is all a unified story. So you don't get to pick your verse, change the definitions, and say there, right? That's not how this is true. That's not how this works, right? So, so chapter uh 26, Leviticus chapter 26 is a huge chapter uh in uh in understanding uh uh of the Bible. Uh and so next time when we uh we'll look at chapter 27, uh, we'll finish the book of Leviticus. Yes. Uh and um uh but chapter 26 is uh is a huge one. Leviticus 26, Deuteronomy 28, the prophets, uh this is Israel's history.
Phil PorterYeah, you can see why this is so important uh of a chapter, just to kind of even like myself today reading it, just to be reminded, and everybody gets this fact of like look, if you do this and you don't repent, well then now this is gonna happen. And then if you don't repent again, now this is gonna happen. Uh most parents they know this in teaching their children. Oh, yeah, like this is not hard to figure out, and it's crazy that Israel didn't figure it out. You know, it's it's just kind of interesting to think if all these bad things are happening, wouldn't you think at some point you would say, I'm done. Like, Lord, I'm sorry. Like I'm going to fully repent now. Um, because that's usually how people respond. And then I think the faithfulness of the Lord that there's a there's a a really great quote that um uh my mentor uh would say all the time, and that's what I feel like it's it's in here when it says, you know, that I will be their God, and he would say, period plus nothing. That's it. Absolutely. Period plus nothing. There's nothing else after it. And he would say this phrase all the time and actually put that on a little plaque of mine, just the understand that, you know, when you get to something that's even in life so convincing, it's just period, there's plus nothing. There's nothing after it. And I think that like I can I can res it's like resounding in my mind when you are saying they're God. And um it it was it's just something that I'm so thankful today that we're able to go through. Because I know many of us have looked at this chapter, but not in light of the story. Right. And some of us today, even when you're listening, you're hearing this for the very first time. And when you say Paul, and you're saying, you know, Paul's quoting Deuteronomy 32, you I think one of the greatest things to remember is that Paul knew the law front back, up down, like he was very, very knowledgeable in the law, a Pharisee of Pharisees. And um, and so it it shouldn't be surprising that Paul's going back to the law to explain to Gentiles. And so today, I think that's a great point.
Dr. David KlinglerIs there anything else you have to say before we just I used to uh if you've ever heard me teach New Testament or you said any of my classes, I I would I would often say I can sum up the New Testament in two words. Told you. Right? This is exactly well, I could sum up the book of Joshua in two words, told you. Yeah, this is this is what the Lord said was going to happen in the Torah was Israel wasn't going to go into the land, they weren't going to do what they were told, they were going to rebel, he will judge them, and and they still, you know. Uh so Deuteronomy 32, um, I can sum up judges in two, told you, right? Samuel, told you, prophets, have you not been listening? Right? Israel does not have eyes to see, uh, ears to hear, or a heart to know. Yeah, they will not walk in his ways.
Phil PorterAnd it continues in the New Testament, but he will cause them to do it.
Dr. David KlinglerYes, and so through the rejection
Read The Whole Story And Closing
Dr. David Klinglerof Israel, the gospel will go to the Gentiles, the rejection of Israel's not only Israel's rejection of the Lord, but the rejection of the Christ, the gospel will go to the Gentiles. This is what Moses said, this is what the what the prophets are saying. And at the end, when he sees their strength is gone, then he will rush in and he will save them, and they will be his people, and he will be their God. You're going, what part of this are we not understanding? This is not rock and science. This is not hard to understand or comprehend. The problem I think we have is that we begin with our New Testament and our New Testament theology, we don't start in Genesis.
Phil PorterYes.
Dr. David KlinglerAnd the story begins in Genesis and it ends in Revelation. And so you can't go to Revelation and make any sense of it if you haven't watched the first 65 scenes of the movie. The 66th scene will finish the story. But if you don't know the story, and if you're interpreting the scenes individually in no particular order in light of your theology, whichever, whatever it is, I don't care if it's dispensational theology, covenant theology, Catholic theology, method, uh, read the Bible. Uh, it will make sense of itself. It's like watching a movie. You don't have to go ask some commentator to tell you what the movie's about. Go watch the movie. Go read the Bible. And when you read it, it'll make sense to you. Yes. Uh, and uh, and then you can evaluate what those commentators are saying by reading the Bible. Yes. An old professor used to say, Dr. Pentecost at the seminary, used to say, the Bible sheds a lot of light on those commentaries, right? Uh we read the Bible to evaluate the commentator. We read the Bible to evaluate what a podcast guy is saying about it as well, right? So the Bible is the authority. Uh, and that's what we're trying to establish here with teach me the Bible and and making sure that uh we can help the people of God understand the word of God.
Phil PorterYeah, exactly that. Well, thank you, David, for today. Leviticus chapter 26, blessings and cursings. Uh, invite y'all to uh read over it as well now that we have gone through it, and then we will jump into the last chapter of Leviticus next time.
