Program .

Mele

Aloha and welcome to the Livestock Wala'u , a podcast aimed to provide educational support , information , guidance and outreach to our livestock stakeholders in Hawaii and the rest of the US . We are your hosts , mele Oshiro and Shannon Sand , and today we're just going to talk a little bit about what's going on this month , sort of before we begin . I just want to wish everyone a happy holiday season . I hope everyone takes some time to enjoy your family , your friends or just take some time for yourself . We all need to take some time for ourselves .

Mele

Press the pause button for a little while and I guess we'll start with some Hawaii program updates . And first of all , I just want to share with everyone if you didn't hear Shannon our college has recently gotten a new name , in a sense . So we are now the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience Some change that came because it aligns better with our college goals and mission and something that's been in the works for a while . So it was officially announced that our college is now having a new name . So we're still CTAHR . The R is just resilience now .

Mele

So I just want to share that and the US Department of Farm Service agencies now accepting applications for livestock forage disaster program in , for this is approved in Honolulu and Kauai counties . So this is for grazing losses due to drought . So for LFP assistance for 2024 , you need to apply by January 30th of 2025 . So be sure to go ahead and reach out to your local FSA office and find out how to apply for that if you've never done it before . Other counties were not announced .

Mele

Yeah , so the two qualifying counties is Honolulu and Kauai currently , so , and that's all I have for Hawaii right now .

Shannon

Okay . So for Nebraska and the rest of the West , we have well , actually this is nationwide . The online Quicken course is available for $20 a person we recently launched for Nebraska . We receive FSA borrower training approval for an online campus course through University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the Center for Ag Profitability . We'll have that linked below . That has all the information and stuff . So if you are a beginning borrower from FSA in the state of Nebraska only at this point and need borrower training , we do have that option available and it is again online , so it's self-paced , which is really nice .

Shannon

We are currently seeking people to fill out our livestock custom rates survey . So Nebraska does a livestock custom rates survey every other year , so this is only the second time it's been done , but we found it to be very valuable and a lot of our producers really like it . So if you are a livestock custom rates user or person who conducts these , we would greatly appreciate it if you could take the time to fill this out and you live in the state of Nebraska . We are having all kinds of meetings , lots and lots of them . We have some livestock risk meetings that cover things like insurance options , how to create a risk management plan , all of those fun things and those are being presented by the University of Nebraska , lincoln Center for Ag Profitability and Nebraska Extension . And we have well , the one that by the time this goes out , we will have one in Chadron on December 3rd from 530 to 730 pm Mountain Time .

Shannon

Scotts Bluff , december 4th , 530 to 730 pm Mountain Time . One in Clay Center , january 21st 2025 , 1030 am to 2 pm Mountain Time . One in Clay Center , january 21st 2025 , 1030 am to 2 pm Central Time . And then we have Landlord and Tenant Cash Rent Workshop . So if you are either a landlord , a tenant , someone who's worked in real estate or interested in it , or has a lot of questions related to leases and land values and what you see the trends currently being , this is a good workshop for you to come to and visit . So it is free to attend , but registration is required for each location . I should say I forgot to say that earlier .

Shannon

For all of these programs they are in person and you must register in advance . So for the landlord and tenant cash rent workshops , those are December 4th in Alliance , from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm Mountain Time . December 5th in Norfolk , that is , 10.30 am to 2.00 pm Central Time . December 5th in Sydney from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm Mountain Time . December 10th . In Meade from 10.30 am to 2.00 pm Central Time . December 12th in Wilbur from 1 to 4 Central and then December 17th in Dakota City from 10.30 am to 2 pm Central . And then I will turn it over to Mellie so she can talk about our upcoming guests , because it's very exciting .

Mele

Yeah , so we have a new ag finance extension agent at the komohana research station extension and research station and songyi paik will be joining us this month . Um , we can talk story with her and excited to um have her come on and share a little bit about her background and her program , um and sort of where she hopes to go .
