there for now so we have a little bit of context of what this might look like as we jump into the scripture here. 00:04:14.800 --> 00:04:17.199 So let's look at verse one together. 00:04:17.360 --> 00:04:27.920 It says, if any of you has a dispute against another, how dare you take it to court before the unrighteous and not before the saints? 00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:42.160 So if you remember a few chapters back, Paul already told them in 1 Corinthians chapter 3, verse 3, he said, For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not worldly and behaving like mere humans? 00:04:42.720 --> 00:05:01.680 You're both calling yourself followers of Christ, but instead of allowing those that have the Spirit of God in them to mediate your dispute, you'd rather be go before someone that doesn't have the wisdom of God and doesn't have the Holy Spirit inside of them and let them decide your case. 00:05:01.920 --> 00:05:05.839 That's what the picture that's being painted here of what the Corinthians are doing. 00:05:06.079 --> 00:05:14.959 Not to mention that what a bad representation this is of the church within the community of Corinth that's looking at these Christians and how they behave. 00:05:15.759 --> 00:05:17.759 Because what did Jesus tell us? 00:05:18.000 --> 00:05:24.079 How should we know, or how would the world know that we are believers, that we are followers of Christ? 00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:27.680 It's by the love that we have for one another. 00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:33.199 So Paul says, and this is some pretty strong language here, he says, How dare you? 00:05:33.759 --> 00:05:37.040 This isn't a, you know, it's probably not wise for you guys to do this. 00:05:37.199 --> 00:05:40.240 It's not, you know, you should really think about this a little differently next time. 00:05:40.399 --> 00:05:48.399 He flat out says, How dare you take a dispute before the unrighteous and not before the saints? 00:05:48.959 --> 00:05:54.079 Don't you know, he's telling them, how backward this is, what's going on within the church. 00:05:54.240 --> 00:05:58.879 You know, it's important to remember here that Paul's not saying that Christians shouldn't go to court. 00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:03.680 God has given us governing authorities and laws and the court system for a purpose. 00:06:03.839 --> 00:06:13.759 What Paul is saying here is that we shouldn't be taking each other to court over disputes that can and should be handled within the church. 00:06:13.920 --> 00:06:15.519 He goes on in verse 2. 00:06:15.920 --> 00:06:23.600 Or don't you know that the saints, so that's all Christians he's talking about, don't you know that the saints will judge the world? 00:06:24.319 --> 00:06:38.639 To believe that the saints cannot come to the right verdict on a$2,000 dispute, but also believe that they are going to judge the world with Christ one day, think about how backwards that is. 00:06:39.120 --> 00:06:47.600 You know, we're gonna share in Christ's inheritance, we're gonna reign with him, as it says here, and we're gonna judge the world. 00:06:47.839 --> 00:06:51.680 1 Timothy chapter 2, verses 11 and 12 confirms this. 00:06:51.759 --> will also deny us. 00:07:03.920 --> 00:07:17.360 You know, this whole idea of reigning with Christ and judging the world, it's most likely pointing to Christ's millennial reign after his second coming, when he comes to rule perfectly over the earth for a thousand years. 00:07:17.519 --> 00:07:24.319 And Revelation 20, verse 4, talks a little bit about this as well, about saints ruling with him in that time. 00:07:24.720 --> 00:07:28.240 But Paul continues on talking about reigning and judging. 00:07:28.480 --> 00:07:30.800 Look at the second half of verse 2. 00:07:31.439 --> Scripture what exactly this is gonna look like, we will rule and reign with Christ over the world and over angels. 00:08:23.519 --> 00:08:27.519 And you know, my curiosity really wishes that Paul what we're talking about is probably uh ruling and judging over fallen angels. 00:08:38.720 --> 00:08:44.960 Because in scripture, I don't really see a need for heavenly angels needing any judging, like, the crazy thing about this is we're gonna be judging angels. 00:08:54.799 --> 00:09:09.519 Because in scripture, um, you know, we we see like when somebody has an encounter with an angel, usually we have the inappropriate response of just falling down in awe and wanting to worship like there are these beings that are so much higher than us. 00:09:09.840 --> 00:09:15.840 But the thing is, we are the ones that are gonna reign with Christ, and they won't. 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:22.240 So it's just like this whole thing of like, wow, I really want to know what this looks like, but we don't know exactly. 00:09:22.399 --> 00:09:30.720 But we do know that we are gonna rule and reign with Christ, we are gonna uh rule over the world and we're gonna judge angels uh at some point. with Christ, and we have the Holy Spirit living inside of us right now, teaching us and counseling us and directing us, then these small matters, like a$2,000 dispute, should be no problem for us if filled with spirit-filled people that Paul has admittedly documented as not mature as a whole, and some are carnal Christians, and they're too accepting of sin. 00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:41.679 But what he's getting at here is as we continue on through this chapter, is that even a less mature, spirit-filled follower of Christ is better than someone that does not have the Spirit of God living in them. all while you have the Spirit of God living inside of you, and all while your brothers and sisters have the Spirit of God living inside of them as well. 00:11:13.840 --> 00:11:36.080 You know, I was trying to think of what this would be like kind of in a modern-day case, but I think it would be like say that you were in charge of the maintenance of the golf course here in town, and you have access to multiple really nice riding lawnmowers, but you choose to use a push mower for all 18 greens and fairways. 00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:41.919 And someone asks you, why are you using the push mower when you have all of these riding mowers? 00:11:42.240 --> 00:11:47.519 You say, Well, because that's the way I was brought up, and that's the way my neighbor does it. 00:11:47.600 --> 00:11:50.480 So I just figured that's you know what we should probably be doing. 00:11:50.559 --> 00:11:53.120 That's how everybody else in my neighborhood's doing it. 00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:56.799 And you say, you know, that makes no sense at all. 00:11:56.960 --> 00:12:09.360 It's like, yeah, but I have access to these things, but I'm just gonna go along with the way that I've always done it growing up, the way my dad did it, the way my neighbors are doing it, and even though I have that access, I'm just gonna keep using my push mower. 00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:13.279 Paul's saying here, you have access to the Holy Spirit. 00:12:13.440 --> 00:12:19.440 Yet you go and do what your neighbors are doing that don't have access to the Holy Spirit. 00:12:19.679 --> 00:12:33.840 You have access to the all-knowing, perfect God of the universe who judges perfectly with perfect justice, and you're looking to the wisdom of the world to decide disputes among your own church. 00:12:34.080 --> think now is the time to mention Matthew 18 in all of this. 00:13:12.879 --> 00:13:19.360 So I want to read it to you, and then we're gonna talk about how to apply Matthew 18 specifically to this situation. 00:13:19.600 --> 00:13:20.879 So I'll just read it to you. 00:13:20.960 --> 00:13:28.480 It says, if your brother sins against you, go tell him his fault between you and him alone. 00:13:28.720 --> 00:13:32.159 If he listens to you, you have one your brother. 00:13:32.320 --> 00:13:41.759 But if he won't listen, take one or two others with you, so that by the testimony of two or three witnesses, every fact may be established. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.879 If he doesn't pay attention to them, tell the church. 00:13:45.039 --> 00:13:51.840 If he doesn't pay attention even to know, the first thing I think we need to remember as we approach verses like today in Matthew 18 as well, is that the goal is always restoration. 00:14:05.840 --> 00:14:09.519 It's never just to get even and kick somebody out of the church. 00:14:09.600 --> 00:14:12.480 The goal is always restoration. 00:14:13.120 --> 00:14:25.279 And though, you know, we're talking about a lot of different situations that we can apply Matthew 18 to a lot of different situations where, you know, someone wrongs you, or there is a dispute that needs arbitration within the church. 00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:30.559 Or like we talked about last week, somebody is living in sin and the whole church ends up knowing about it. 00:14:30.720 --> 00:14:33.679 What do we do from that point forward? 00:14:34.080 --> 00:14:39.279 First, in Matthew 18, it tells us you go and you talk to the person directly. 00:14:39.759 --> 00:14:44.080 And then if nothing's resolved, second, you bring one or two others with you. 00:14:44.320 --> 00:14:57.600 And this isn't talking about your good friend that you've already gossiped with and is already on your side in the disputed situation, is like, yeah, let's go get that person and we're gonna, you know, we'll kick them out of the church. 00:14:58.080 --> 00:15:11.519 This is talking about grabbing somebody that's mature in the faith, that's impartial to the situation, that can come and hear both sides of the story, impartially listen, and then hopefully arbitrate from there. 00:15:11.759 --> 00:15:16.960 And this is done because if you bring a friend that already agrees with you, there's no partiality. 00:15:17.120 --> 00:15:25.840 And Proverbs 18, 17 says the first to state his case seems right until another comes and cross-examines him. 00:15:26.559 --> 00:15:38.480 So if you bring one or two more people with you, and you all find that the person is wrong, and the person still won't repent, then you bring it to tendency for people when they feel wronged to want to skip all of Matthew 18, come straight to the elders or an elder and say, That person did this and you need to kick them out. 00:16:19.600 --> felt like it's like, okay, well, start off with one other person just because there's a safety issue. 00:16:51.039 --> 00:16:57.759 But you are to go alone first and then bring impartial people with 00:17:16.240 But if you take people with you and they still won't repent, and then you tell the church and they still won't repent, then you cut them off from fellowship with the church, it says. like to be out of fellowship with their brothers and sisters. 00:17:28.480 --> 00:17:34.079 Now, you might be wondering, how does this apply to what we're talking about today? 00:17:34.240 --> Well, wait, you said I didn't have to pay it back. 00:17:54.960 --> 00:18:03.440 And then you say, Yeah, but you're obviously doing better, and you just bought that new car, like you need to help me out now, and you arrive at an impasse. 00:18:04.079 --> 00:18:11.440 This is when you take two or three mature, impartial people from the church to help arbitrate. 00:18:11.519 --> 00:18:22.559 It's less of a confrontation, but more of an arbitration of some people are gonna hear this case, they're gonna go, they're gonna pray about it, and then they're gonna come back with a verdict. 00:18:22.799 --> 00:18:34.160 Because the very next verses in Matthew 18, verses 18 through 22 that we just read says, Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven. our flesh really wants to do. 00:20:41.599 --> 00:20:54.000 Jesus says in Matthew 5.40 in the Sermon of the Mount, as for the one who wants to sue you, who wants to take you to court, and take away
