this morning, and we were talking about how Christ came to this earth to live among us, being fully God, but also being fully man. 00:01:54.239 --> 00:02:03.120 Because he desired to do something for us that we could not do for ourselves, to save our souls from the path that we were heading down. 00:02:03.280 --> 00:02:07.599 You know, a path of sin that Scripture says leads to destruction. For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, all things have been created through him and for him. 00:04:37.600 He started personally sacrificing from conception. 00:04:38.399 --> 00:04:46.160 You know, as you read through the accounts of Jesus in the Gospels, those are the first four books of the New Testament called Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. 00:04:46.399 --> 00:04:51.600 You know, one of the big things that always stands out to me is the humility of Jesus. 00:04:51.920 --> 00:05:02.079 He had so many opportunities to not be humble in the Gospels, and I don't think anyone would have blamed him in those moments for not being humble. 00:05:02.319 --> 00:05:03.439 Yet he was. 00:05:04.399 --> 00:05:08.399 And this is what our passage here this morning is all about. 00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:21.439 The God of the universe that stepped down from his heavenly position and humbled himself to take on the likeness of humankind, to live a perfect, humble life with us. 00:05:21.600 --> 00:05:26.079 And that's what Emmanuel means, as we just say, God with us. 00:05:26.480 00:07:12.800 You know, when I look at that passage that we just read, the words and the phrases about Jesus that stand out to me, there's four of them. 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:23.600 This that he heaven, since eternity past, Jesus Christ, embodied these phrases that we're talking about here this morning as part of the sacrifice that he made coming down to dwell among us. 00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:42.560 Look at verse 5 with me again. 00:07:42.800 --> 00:07:48.560 At our church, we go verse by verse and we and we look at what each little part has to do. 00:07:48.639 --> 00:07:49.600 So start with verse 5. 00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:53.439 It says, adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus. 00:07:53.680 --> 00:08:02.560 So Paul is the author of this book in Philippians, and he's talking to this Philippian church, and he's telling them that we need to act like Jesus. 00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:08.079 You know, this is how we need to think, this is how we need to be, this is how we need to act. 00:08:08.240 --> 00:08:13.839 And we find in verse 6 this attitude that we need to adopt through Jesus' example. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:15.600 So look at verse 6 with me. 00:08:15.920 --> 00:09:25.519 So here's the next question. 00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:35.759 Would you be interested, if this was your life, in trading places and becoming one of those servants that you just got to boss around? 00:09:37.919 --> 00:09:40.799 Did you know that Jesus had to make that decision? 00:09:41.039 --> 00:09:45.679 And I don't picture Jesus just bossing people around like that, by the way, that's just an example. 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:51.840 But he chose to come to this earth for over 30 years to be a servant. 00:09:52.559 --> 00:09:55.039 Because he loved us that much. 00:09:55.759 --> 00:09:59.519 And then verse 6 says something that might be kind of hard for us to understand. 00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:04.799 It says, He did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. 00:10:05.039 --> 00:10:09.039 Your translation may say something to be grasped. 00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:12.000 You know, this isn't saying that Jesus is less than God. 00:10:12.159 --> 00:10:16.879 We have to look at this phrase with all the surrounding verses as well. 00:10:17.039 --> 00:10:27.120 You know, it's saying he was willing to deny his magnificent heavenly glory for a time, to come to this earth in the likeness of humankind. 00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:34.879 It's saying he didn't cling to that heavenly glory that he shared with God since eternity past. 00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:38.879 He didn't grasp onto it and hold on to it and refuse to let it go. 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:44.159 For a time, he was willing to step into time onto this earth. 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:54.320 And look at verse 7, it says, instead of grasping on and holding on to those things, it says he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant. 00:10:54.559 --> 00:10:59.279 There's that word, servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. 00:11:00.480 --> 00:11:03.039 Jesus emptied himself. 00:11:03.360 --> 00:11:06.480 And all of this, remember, he never lost his divinity. glory to be veiled, to not be seen as brightly for a time. 00:11:20.159 --> 00:11:28.559 Or you could say he allowed his glory to be hidden for a time from the people on earth, except for a few occasions like the transfiguration. 00:11:30.639 --> 00:11:42.799 And regarding this word servant that we're looking at, we see here in verse 7 that we can look at the words of Jesus from Luke 22, 27, which we have a slide for. 00:11:43.039 --> 00:11:46.240 And it Jesus himself talks about what it looks like to be a servant. 00:11:46.320 --> 00:11:49.679 He says, and he's talking to his disciples, for who is greater? 00:11:49.919 --> 00:11:52.960 The one at the table or the one serving? 00:11:53.440 --> 00:11:55.840 Isn't it the one at the table? 00:11:56.399 --> 00:11:59.519 But I am among you as the one who serves. 00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:08.399 He emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. 00:12:08.559 --> 00:12:10.960 Look at the end of verse 7 about what it would have looked like if Jesus wasn't humble? 00:12:57.440 --> 00:13:02.879 You know, at any point, Jesus could have looked at us humans and said, I want to go back to heaven. Instead, it says right here, he humbled himself. 00:13:21.519 --> 00:13:28.799 You know, when people gave Jesus a hard time and they tried to bully him, he could have said, Do you know who I am? talk to me like that? 00:13:40.080 --> 00:13:45.039 And he could have called down fire from heaven and destroyed all of these people that were coming against them. 00:13:45.200 --> 00:13:46.240 But he when uh at the time that this was written, in the time of Jesus Christ, your name was so much more than what people just referred to you as and called you. 00:14:16.080 --> 00:14:19.279 Your name himself to be humiliated so that he could pay for our wrongdoing. 00:14:54.159 --> 00:15:04.399 To pay for every wrong thing that we've done, all of those things that we've done that keep us up in the middle of the night, and all those things that we struggle with regret over. 00:15:04.960 --> 00:15:12.000 And God tells Jesus that he's gonna exalt him and give him the name above any other name ever. 00:15:12.960 --> 00:15:17.440 All of that honor and glory is for Jesus Christ. 00:15:17.679 --> 00:15:25.440 And now Jesus sits in heaven at the right hand of the Father, Scripture tells us, in all glory and honor. 00:15:25.840 --> 00:15:27.679 But there's something still to come. 00:15:27.919 --> 00:15:35.600 You know, the Christmas story is about Jesus' first coming to earth, but the Bible talks about a second coming of Christ to earth as well. 00:15:35.759 --> 00:15:46.799 You know, Israel waited in eager anticipation for the Messiah, as we just sang about, you know, his first coming, just like we wait in eager anticipation of his second coming. 00:15:47.120 --> 00:15:48.960 Which is what verse 10 is about. 00:15:49.039 --> 00:15:50.240 Look at that with me. 00:15:50.480 --> 00:16:03.039 So that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 00:16:03.279 --> 00:16:12.320 When Jesus comes back, as we see in the book of Revelation, everyone, whether they believe in him or not, are gonna be standing before God. 00:16:12.480 --> 00:16:18.879 00:17:52.319 And to think of how our Savior loved us so much that he humbled himself to step out of the glory of heaven, to be born of a virgin in a manger into a sinful earth that would ultimately
