for everybody. 00:06:27.040 --> 00:06:34.000 Now, for context here in 1 Timothy, Paul just finished telling them at the end of chapter 2. 00:06:34.079 --> 00:06:44.000 So these verses right before this, that women are not to hold a position of authority over a man when it comes to leading and teaching in a church context. 00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:46.399 And we're going to get a lot more into that. 00:06:46.639 --> 00:06:59.680 But now he's moving on in chapter 3 to tell Timothy who is eligible to have those positions of authority, of authority and of teaching within the church body. through this, I think it's important to note that there is freedom and flexibility of how a church is organized, but there is not freedom and flexibility in the requirements for elders within a So overseer is probably a better word for us to be using within our church context. 00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:32.879 But when it comes to leadership in the church, we see three different words that are used in Scripture that we should define, I think, before we go any further. 00:08:32.960 --> 00:08:37.360 And that's overseer, elder, and pastor slash shepherd. 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:39.679 So let's look at each one of these. 00:08:39.759 --> 00:08:47.519 So overseer, which that's the word we're seeing in our text today, and it comes from the root word that means to inspect. 00:08:48.000 --> 00:09:00.960 And the Greek definition is oversight, overseership, office, charge, the office of an elder, the overseer or presiding officers of a Christian church. 00:09:01.200 --> 00:09:10.320 The next term we see is elder, and that's from the root meaning elderly, literally not young in the context that we see it used in. 00:09:10.559 --> 00:09:18.240 And the Greek definition for that word is among the Christians, those who presided over the assemblies or churches. 00:09:18.480 --> 00:09:24.879 The New Testament uses the term bishop, elders, and presbyters interchangeably. 00:09:25.039 --> 00:10:07.039 --> 00:10:23.759 And I wanted to define these really to help us see that they are all different ways to describe an experience level, a role, a responsibility of what an elder, pastor, overseer should be doing. 00:10:23.919 --> 00:10:27.519 And it all falls under the category of shepherding. 00:10:28.159 --> 00:10:32.159 A good shepherd does all of these things. 00:10:44.240 --> 00:10:48.879 Now, 1 Peter chapter 5, verses 1 through 2 puts this all together really nicely. 00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:49.919 So I want to read it to you. 00:10:50.080 --> 00:11:00.559 It says, I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder, and witness to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed. 00:11:00.879 --> 00:11:08.080 Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion, but willingly. 00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:10.799 See how he brought it all together right there? 00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:17.279 He exhorts the elders to shepherd willingly as overseers. 00:11:17.840 --> 00:11:22.559 And the qualifications are the same for those three titles. 00:11:22.960 --> 00:11:28.799 So when you see overseer here in 1 Timothy today, you should be thinking of all of those terms. 00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:37.039 You know, for ease, I'm going to be using the term pastor elder here today from here on out because I think it fits our church best. 00:11:37.200 --> 00:11:40.720 It's easier for us to understand in our context. 00:11:40.960 --> 00:11:50.720 Now, getting back to our text, it says if anyone aspires to be an overseer, pastor, or elder, he desires a noble work. 00:11:51.440 --> 00:12:00.720 Now, the desire to be a pastor or elder is fine, but it's the work that is noble and good and honorable. 00:12:00.879 --> 00:12:05.919 Not the aspiration necessarily, but the work of a pastor elder. 00:12:06.159 --> 00:12:09.120 That is what is noble in the eyes of God. 00:12:09.440 --> 00:12:17.039 Which means the role or office into that list, I think we need to address that Paul is clear here that overseer, pastor, elder is a he. 00:12:32.879 --> 00:12:46.879 And I almost hate to teach this passage without teaching the end of the previous chapter, the end of chapter two, where I would love to explain how men and women are equal in every way, but God has given us different roles as men and women. 00:12:47.039 --> This is not an exhaustive list of elder requirements. 00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:08.240 Um, if you look at the requirements in Titus 1, they're not exact, but they almost are, and you can look at that on
