--> 00:00:43.679 So he's giving them the last instructions, he's giving them a handful of reassurances, and he's really giving them a lot of heads up on the things that are to come, on what to expect with these couples a lot about oneness being a lifelong process that they're going to be engaged in. 00:07:44.319 --> 00:07:51.199 Because you don't just say I do at a wedding ceremony, and then so much that Jesus asks Philip outright, right here, how can you say, show us the Father? 00:09:58.720 --> 00:10:02.480 I think Jesus is a little flabbergasted at this point of just like, really? word, they can at least look at the works that God is doing through him, the miracles, the signs, the acts, the teachings, and know that he is one with the Father, that he is from the Father, and that the Father is in him. 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:31.519 You know, they could have believed in Jesus just from his words, or just from his works, but Jesus graciously gives them both, his words and his 00:11:51.039 --> 00:11:59.519 There's lots of opinions about this verse, because some look at this verse and think, you know, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. 00:11:59.840 --> 00:12:02.159 How do we do something greater than that? 00:12:02.399 --> 00:12:19.840 You know, some look at this verse and say, This is proof that Jesus was talking to these soon-to-be apostles to do the works, um, do these works, and it's only for them to do within the New Testament period, and that promise died with the disciples. 00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:29.919 Some people look at this verse and say, we're doing something wrong if we're not seeing greater works than Jesus did every Sunday in our Sunday morning services. 00:12:30.399 --> 00:12:35.279 But the enduring word commentary has a great summation of and places than Jesus ever did in his life and ministry. 00:13:00.559 --> 00:13:18.240 And I think that makes a lot of sense because we see throughout the book of Acts and the New Testament as a whole, really, his disciples, now apostles, Paul included, doing incredible things through God's power as the Spirit led them and equipped them to do those things. 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:26.000 They're preaching, we see in the book of Acts, and thousands of people are coming to faith in Jesus all at once. 00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:32.399 These apostles are going all over the known world and are to continue on with everything Jesus was doing while he was here on earth, but with a greater reach and for a longer period of time, and that will happen through the work of the Holy Spirit inside want to talk a bit about our role in having the same desires as God. 00:17:27.839 --> 00:17:35.839 Psalm 37, 4 says this take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart's desires. 00:17:36.079 --> 00:17:42.799 You know, this verse was life-changing for me when I realized that I had been reading it backward most of my life. 00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:50.880 It means that God will implant his desires into our heart when we delight in him. 00:17:51.359 --> 00:17:57.200 You know, I always read it growing up as take delight in the Lord, and he's gonna give you anything you want. spending time in the word, when you're spending time in prayer, in worship, in fellowship, maybe out in nature, just enjoying his creation, walking in obedience to the Holy Spirit, which means, all of Jesus is referring to all of his commands here, but let's just think about his most recent commands to his disciples around this table. 00:19:11.680 --> 00:19:17.359 These commands that would be fresh want to end with talking about what it means to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit in our life and then obey it. 00:26:42.400 --> 00:26:52.960 So that we do know how to pray in Jesus' name, so that we do know how and have the power to obey Jesus' commands as he just said. 00:26:53.119 --> 00:27:01.279 And I think walking by the Spirit and hearing his voice is probably one of the toughest things to good way to get started if you're asking that question of I don't know how to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. 00:27:14.160 --> 00:27:16.640 I don't know how to walk by the Spirit. 00:27:16.960 --> 00:27:20.400 You see, there's competing voices that are in our life. 00:27:20.559 --> 00:27:27.839 You know, as followers of Jesus, we get one more competing voice inside of us, the voice of the Holy us, we have a conscience that speaks to us, a voice that we should be following. 00:27:42.160 --> 00:27:48.319 You know, we don't ever want to contradict that voice inside of us unless it's unbiblical, of course. 00:27:48.559 --> 00:27:54.799 We have another voice, we have our flesh that's the part of us that still wants us to sin. 00:27:54.960 --> 00:28:00.880 It still wants us to satisfy every appetite that we have and has no regard for consequence. 00:28:01.039 --> 00:28:04.079 It's just the kind of the gimme, gimme, gimme part of us. 00:28:04.319 --> 00:28:06.079 And then we have this other voice. 00:28:06.160 --> 00:28:07.119 We have the enemy. 00:28:07.279 --> 00:28:14.079 We have Satan and demons that are constantly tempting us, trying to get us to sin and to stray from Jesus. 00:28:14.480 --> 00:28:18.160 So the question becomes: how do we know which voice is which? 00:28:18.319 --> 00:28:20.799 How do we know which voice to listen to? 00:28:20.960 --> 00:28:26.240 Well, first, we can use the process of elimination by knowing God's word. 00:28:26.480 --> 00:28:28.880 That's why we have those reading plans on the back there. 00:28:29.039 --> 00:28:35.839 The more we know the word for ourselves individually, the better off we're going to be as a church. 00:28:36.079 --> 00:28:41.200 Because the Holy Spirit is never going to tell you to do something that contradicts God's word. 00:28:41.680 --> 00:28:49.839 So if you hear a voice telling you that you should do something, first just ask yourself, does this align with God's word or not? 00:28:50.079 --> 00:28:52.799 Oftentimes, that's all we need to do. 00:28:53.039 --> 00:29:06.160 You know, say you're eating at a restaurant and you get really bad service, and you get just outright rude service from somebody, and you hear this voice inside you say, You should burn this place down. 00:29:08.079 --> 00:29:14.319 Pretty sure that goes against about a hundred of God's commandments Second, the second thing that will help us is um we need to allow our conscience to be informed once again by God's word, because that's another voice we hear, it's our conscience. 00:29:42.160 --> conscience, but it says the work of the law is written on their hearts, their consciences confirm this. 00:29:57.359 --> 00:30:05.759 So we have this innate voice inside of us that God has given everyone that says, This is right and this is wrong. 00:30:05.920 --> 00:30:08.720 And we have that from the time we're little children. 00:30:08.960 --> 00:30:14.480 It's why uh people innately know inside of them, you can ask a little kid and they'll say, No, that's wrong. 00:30:24.640 --> 00:30:27.759 And our consciences can become calloused. 00:30:28.000 --> 00:30:31.519 We have to recognize that if we ignore them too much. 00:30:31.759 --> 00:30:38.799 They can become legalistic, you know, depending on environmental circumstances and influences in our life. 00:30:39.039 --> 00:30:48.000 But the goal for any believer is to make the voice of our conscience the same as the voice of the Holy Spirit. 00:30:48.480 --> 00:30:55.279 Our spirit completely submitted to the Holy Spirit and being informed once again by God's word. 00:30:55.759 --> 00:31:03.519 Now, the third thing we can do, and it comes to the question of how can we tell between our flesh and the Holy Spirit? 00:31:03.680 --> 00:31:09.680 Well, our flesh, again, you know, it's I like to think of it as the appetites that we have. 00:31:09.839 --> 00:31:12.400 And those appetites can be good, you know. 00:31:12.559 --> 00:31:17.519 The body just saying you should probably eat something before you get hangry and yell at your family. 00:31:17.599 --> 00:31:25.119 You know, there's nothing wrong with having an appetite and satisfying that appetite if you're keeping it within the bounds of Scripture. 00:31:26.160 --> 00:31:32.000 We can have sexual appetite that can be good within the confines of marriage, but only there. 00:31:32.160 --> 00:31:42.880 You know, but our flesh will so often demand unbiblical appetites from us, of selfishness, of the attitude of me first, I'm gonna get my own. still small voice inside of us, giving us that calm instruction of what to do. 00:32:35.359 --> 00:32:38.480 Our flesh is usually the one that's yelling at us in a panic. 00:32:38.559 --> 00:32:40.319 You know, hurry, do it now. 00:32:40.640 --> 00:32:42.000 You deserve this. 00:32:42.400 --> 00:32:46.079 You have a special circumstance that nobody else does. 00:32:48.559 --> 00:33:02.079 But I've found it's usually that still small voice that isn't in a hurry, that is giving calm and wise counsel, that is usually going against instant gratification. 00:33:02.480 --> 00:33:06.240 That's usually what he sounds like when he speaks to me, at least. 00:33:06.559 --> 00:33:19.279 But there's another way that the Holy Spirit talks to us, and it's not so much about right and wrong, and not so much about competing voices, but it can just be simple instruction that the Holy Spirit wants to give us, or discernment. 00:33:19.519 --> 00:33:24.880 I always say this from here because it always kind of feels like it to me of just like a little tap on the shoulder. 00:33:25.039 --> 00:33:29.119 The Holy Spirit just being like, hey, check the lock on that door. 00:33:29.680 --> 00:33:32.079 Hey, you need to pray for this person. 00:33:32.480 --> 00:33:35.359 Hey, you need to call this person and check in on them. 00:33:35.599 --> 00:33:41.359 You need to be extra cautious at this intersection 00:33:54.960 But the only way to learn his voice of instruction in this way is to actively listen. 00:33:55.440 --> 00:34:00.000 And then to faithfully obey his voice, even in the smallest of things. 00:34:00.240 --> 00:34:08.960 But it first takes a desire on our own part and a willingness to obey, even when sometimes it makes us feel a little bit crazy. 00:34:09.119 --> 00:34:10.079 We're like, know, a great place to start this process of listening or to hone your discernment skills of listening to the Spirit's voice is Galatians 5, and that's why you're there right now. 00:34:28.000 --> 00:34:29.199 Starting in verse 16. 00:34:29.280 --> 00:34:31.840 So Galatians 5, 16. 00:34:34.000 --> 00:34:43.199 It says, I say then, walk by the Spirit, and you will certainly not carry out the but just stop right there for a second, because if you are walking by the Holy Spirit, he's never going to instruct you against the law, as we already talked about. 00:35:11.599 --> 00:35:18.079 And starting right here in verse 19, he'll tell us what the Holy Spirit will never tell you to do. 00:35:18.239 --> 00:35:22.159 He's never going to tell you what we're about to read, to act out in these ways. 00:35:22.480 --> 00:35:23.280 Verse 19. 00:35:23.519 --> 00:35:56.480 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar, I'm warning you about these things as I warned you before, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 00:35:56.719 --> 00:36:03.360 So if you're tempted to do any of these things, you don't have to ask, Lord, is that you? 00:36:03.840 --> 00:36:10.719 You know from this list alone that the Holy Spirit would never instruct you to engage in any of those things we just read. 00:36:11.039 --> 00:36:18.719 But you can know it's the Holy Spirit if you're being called to do what we see starting in verse 22. 00:36:18.880 --> 00:36:21.039 These are the things that He will instruct you in. 00:36:21.199 --> 00:36:36.800 Verse 22, but the fruit of the Spirit, the things he will instruct you to do, is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. 00:36:37.039 --> 00:36:39.679 The law is not voice inside of you is saying, love your enemy, have self-control, have joy in the midst of your trial, or be faithful, you can know that it's the voice of the Holy Spirit. 00:37:24.480 --> 00:37:27.599 That is the fruit of the Holy Spirit being in you. 00:37:27.840 --> 00:37:35.119 So if you're wondering how to hear the Holy Spirit or how to walk by the Spirit, this is a great place to
