only what Jesus can provide. 00:00:38.399 --> 00:00:42.799 So last week we looked at the demon-possessed man, and now we're going to look at these next two. 00:00:42.960 --> 00:00:48.799 And we're looking at these next two together because their stories intersect as Jesus is on his journey. 00:00:48.960 --> 00:00:50.799 So let's stand for the reading of God's word. 00:00:51.359 --> 00:00:55.039 Mark chapter 5, starting in verse 21. 00:00:55.439 --> 00:01:02.880 It says, when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the sea. 00:01:03.039 --> 00:01:12.239 One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet and begged him earnestly, My little daughter is dying. 00:01:12.400 --> 00:01:16.159 Come and lay your hands on her, so that she can get well and live. 00:01:16.400 --> 00:01:20.719 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him. 00:01:20.879 --> 00:01:27.680 Now a woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years had endured much under many doctors. 00:01:27.840 --> 00:01:31.280 She had spent everything she had and was not see what had who had done this. 00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:19.840 The woman with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. was still speaking, the people came from the synagogue, uh people came from the synagogue leader's house and said, Your daughter is dead. 00:02:35.840 --> 00:02:37.759 Why bother the teacher any more? 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:44.240 When Jesus overheard what was said, he told the synagogue leader, Don't be afraid, only believe. 00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:49.599 He did not let anyone accompany him except 00:04:06.240 --> 00:04:15.199 So as we wrap up chapter five today, I hope we can see a theme that Jesus is no respecter of man. 00:04:15.439 --> 00:04:19.439 Or in more modern English, he does not show favoritism. 00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:24.240 He's not impressed with social standing, with position, or with wealth. 00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:30.319 And as you'll recall, two Sundays ago, we saw Jesus have a very long day of ministry. 00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:38.720 And then we see him get in a boat, he faces a huge storm, he crosses from the western shore of the Sea of Galilee to the eastern shore. 00:04:38.879 --> 00:04:45.920 Um, and then he uh last Sunday we saw that he met up with the man with a legion of demons on that eastern shore. 00:04:46.079 --> 00:04:54.720 The locals asked him to leave, so he turned around, he heads back to the western shore again, uh back to Galilee, and that's where we're picking up this morning. 00:04:54.879 --> 00:05:00.160 He's on his trip back, he arrives on the shore of Galilee, and we pick up in verse 21. 00:05:00.240 --> 00:05:07.920 It says, When Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the sea. 00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:15.199 So, as is Jesus' custom, he's teaching by the Sea of Galilee, and these huge crowds start showing up. 00:05:15.439 --> 00:05:19.439 And if you haven't noticed yet, Jesus really likes to move around. 00:05:19.600 --> 00:05:21.839 You don't see him stationary for very long. 00:05:22.000 --> 00:05:34.000 And if you'll recall, way back in Mark chapter 1, verse 38, Jesus was telling his disciples, he said, Let's go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach thereto. 00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:37.199 This is why I have come. 00:05:37.759 --> 00:05:43.519 Jesus didn't come just to make people feel better and to heal their ailments. 00:05:43.759 --> 00:05:48.800 He didn't come to give the paralytic two good legs to walk into hell with. 00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:58.319 He came to preach the good news, the gospel, to offer eternal spiritual healing to all that would receive it. 00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:01.199 So we see Jesus moving around. 00:06:01.439 --> 00:06:06.079 He's casting out seeds of truth to as many as he possibly can. 00:06:06.399 --> 00:06:21.360 And remember, the miracles are to back up what he's saying, to prove that he has the authority of God over the physical, so that people would realize that he also has the authority of God in the words that he's speaking. 00:06:21.600 --> 00:06:31.920 And here he is in the middle of this huge crowd, and somebody in great need runs in and approaches him. 00:06:32.079 --> 00:06:33.279 Verse 22. 00:06:33.519 --> 00:06:43.120 One of the synagogue leaders named Jairus came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, and he begged him earnestly, My little daughter is dying. 00:06:43.279 --> 00:06:47.600 Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well and live. 00:06:47.839 --> 00:06:54.480 So, first off, we should note that not all of the religious leaders are against Jesus. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:57.839 So far in Mark, that's really kind of all we've seen. 00:06:58.079 --> 00:07:01.519 But here's Jairus, and he's not that way at all. 00:07:02.160 --> 00:07:08.160 And a synagogue leader at this time was much like a modern-day pastor or an elder in a church. 00:07:08.399 --> 00:07:14.879 They were in charge of administration, they were in charge of everything that had to do with the building of the synagogue. 00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:21.600 They had just duties to do, they would organize the services, you know, things like that. 00:07:21.759 --> 00:07:27.199 So people looked up to these men both for spiritual direction and for spiritual leadership. 00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:32.079 And this was a very prominent position in any Jewish town. 00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:34.399 So this guy's probably well off. 00:07:34.560 --> 00:07:37.920 He's probably very well taken care of in his community. 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:39.839 He's a prominent man. 00:07:40.160 --> 00:07:46.639 And this prominent man in desperation, he comes and he throws himself at the feet of Jesus. 00:07:46.959 --> 00:07:50.879 So desperate that he's not concerned about his reputation. 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:59.360 He's not concerned with the other religious leaders that might be opposing Jesus, seeing what he's doing as he throws himself at Jesus' feet. 00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:02.399 He's in desperation for his only daughter. 00:08:02.560 --> 00:08:03.519 We learn that in another gospel. 00:08:03.759 --> 00:08:05.439 This was his only daughter. 00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:10.480 And this only daughter is no doubt probably the apple of this guy's eye. 00:08:11.279 --> 00:08:14.079 So he humbles himself before Jesus. 00:08:14.319 --> 00:08:18.959 And if you'll notice, there's no if you can heal my daughter, Jesus. 00:08:19.360 --> 00:08:21.920 Or would you be willing to heal my daughter? 00:08:22.240 --> 00:08:25.759 He just says, please, please, please come and do it. 00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:27.759 I beg you. 00:08:28.480 --> 00:08:35.279 You know, I don't get the sense that this guy has any doubt in Jesus' abilities or his authority in this moment. 00:08:35.440 --> 00:08:37.519 He just comes and says, I know you can do it. 00:08:37.840 --> 00:08:40.320 Just please come and do it, Jesus. 00:08:41.200 --> 00:08:49.600 So he fell at his feet, he begged earnestly, and some of your translations will actually say that he pleaded fervently or he implored of Jesus. 00:08:49.840 --> 00:08:58.320 And just like we need to find ourselves, in this man's greatest time of need, he comes straight to Jesus. 00:08:59.279 --> 00:09:05.039 And we can learn a lot about making our requests made known to God through this man's story. 00:09:05.679 --> 00:09:07.360 First, he comes to Jesus. 00:09:07.840 --> 00:09:10.559 Second, he humbly falls at his feet. 00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:14.639 Third, he makes his requests known to Jesus. 00:09:14.960 --> 00:09:22.080 And fourth, he has faith that Jesus has the power and the authority to actually do what he's asking. 00:09:22.320 --> 00:09:25.679 I think that's a great example of how we should pray. 00:09:25.840 --> 00:09:27.120 I mean, look at this man's faith. 00:09:27.200 --> 00:09:32.159 He just says, Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well and live. 00:09:32.399 --> 00:09:34.399 There's just no doubt in that statement. 00:09:34.559 --> 00:09:37.360 It's just begging for Jesus to actually do it. 00:09:37.600 --> 00:09:39.440 Let's move on to verse 24. 00:09:39.759 --> 00:09:45.759 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him. 00:09:45.919 --> 00:09:52.559 Now, if you look up that word pressing in the Greek, it means to press on all sides from all directions. 00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:56.960 So picture this crowd, and everyone's trying to get closer to Jesus. 00:09:57.200 --> 00:10:03.679 So that the ones that actually are close to Jesus are actually getting pushed in to him from all sides. 00:10:03.840 --> 00:10:05.279 And Jesus is trying to walk. 00:10:05.440 --> 00:10:12.320 So you can imagine, you know, in your head how hard this is for Jesus to kind of navigate to get to Jairus' house. 00:10:12.799 --> 00:10:22.480 And I don't know about you all, but as somebody that doesn't like big crowds in tight spaces, this sounds like my worst nightmare that Jesus is living right here. 00:10:22.960 --> player, but I Googled his name to find out what dates he played for the 49ers. 00:10:49.840 --> 00:10:53.279 You know, when you Google something, it says, you know, other people have also searched on loving and showing compassion on these people. 00:13:43.759 --> 00:13:49.120 Because Jesus, as we've seen and we're gonna continue to see, is the ultimate servant. 00:13:50.080 --> 00:13:54.000 We never see one act of selfishness from him. 00:13:55.360 --> 00:13:59.279 He came to serve and not be served. 00:13:59.840 --> 00:14:08.639 And as these people are hanging all over him and begging for who knows what, Jesus continues to love them and he continues to serve them. 00:14:09.039 --> 00:14:17.200 They say an easy way to tell if you have a servant's heart is how you respond when you're like a servant. 00:14:27.440 --> 00:14:30.960 I'll be honest, if I was Jesus in this moment, I probably would have lost it. 00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:41.279 I would have gone all Bill Romanowski on these people and just been like, I've had it, leave me alone, you selfish horde of needy people, just out of my presence. 00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:46.799 But Jesus is treated like a servant and he continues to serve. 00:14:48.720 --> 00:14:54.720 So, do you feel like you're kind of getting a mental picture of what's going on in this scene right now with Jesus? 00:14:54.879 --> 00:15:08.799 And I hope you are because it's gonna become very important that we're picturing exactly what's going on as we look at his disciples' response in verse 31, but also as we look to this woman in our next verse with the flow of blood. 00:15:09.120 --> 00:15:18.080 Verse 25 says, now a woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years had endured much under many doctors. 00:15:18.240 --> 00:15:22.399 She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. 00:15:22.559 --> 00:15:25.279 On the contrary, she became worse. 00:15:25.519 --> 00:15:30.639 Now, this woman has a condition of bleeding for 12 years. 00:15:30.879 --> 00:15:34.480 And it's probably menstrual, but it doesn't say for sure. 00:15:34.639 --> 00:15:43.440 But regardless of what it is, this ailment that she has would have had major social ramifications on her life. 00:15:43.679 --> 00:15:51.120 If you want to learn more about it and read, you know, in a little more depth, you can find that in Leviticus 15, what that what this would mean for her. 00:15:51.279 --> 00:15:52.720 But I'm just gonna summarize it. 00:15:52.879 --> 00:15:56.080 It meant that she's considered unclean. 00:15:56.480 --> 00:15:59.840 It means that she cannot worship with her community. 00:16:00.240 --> 00:16:04.000 No one can touch her, otherwise, they're gonna be made unclean as well. 00:16:04.240 --> 00:16:09.360 Everything that she sits on, was grounds for her husband to divorce her. 00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:28.799 We don't know if she was married or not, but if she did have a family, it would mean that she'd be banished from her own you're bleeding for 12 years how weak and how sickly that you would be? 00:16:37.200 --> 00:16:43.679 You know, if you start thinking about iron deficiencies and you start thinking about um all those different kinds of things, anemia. 00:16:46.240 --> 00:16:51.120 And it says that she had endured much under many doctors. 00:16:51.360 --> 00:16:57.679 You know, I've seen enough Westerns to know that I wouldn't want a doctor from the 1800s working on me. 00:16:58.799 --> 00:17:02.320 But imagine 2,000 years ago what these doctors are doing. 00:17:02.399 --> 00:17:13.599 You know, with the limited knowledge that they had of the human body, equipment, you know, no anesthesia, no sanitation practices, or very little, I should say. 00:17:14.160 --> 00:17:20.640 This woman was probably the equivalent of a lab rat to these doctors of, well, I wonder what this is gonna do. 00:17:20.720 --> 00:17:22.720 Or here, let's try this and let's see what happens. 00:17:22.880 --> 00:17:25.680 Oh, by the way, give me all your money before you leave. 00:17:26.160 --> 00:17:28.480 Which we learned that she actually does all those things. 00:17:28.640 --> 00:17:34.000 And it says that she had spent everything that she had and she had suffered greatly. 00:17:34.400 --> 00:17:39.119 This woman has tried everything, and nothing has worked. 00:17:39.839 --> 00:17:41.839 And we see this theme again. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:47.599 Like the like the synagogue leader and the demon-possessed man, just absolute desperation. 00:17:48.319 --> 00:17:50.799 And here's what she does, verse 27. 00:17:51.359 --> 00:17:57.119 Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his clothing. 00:17:57.359 --> 00:18:01.519 For she said, If I just touch his clothes, I'll be made well. 00:18:02.880 --> 00:18:07.119 You can imagine why this woman doesn't want to make a scene. 00:18:07.599 --> 00:18:13.839 She's ceremonially unclean in a huge crowd that is pressing against itself. 00:18:15.279 --> 00:18:19.599 She has to make her way through that crowd just to get to Jesus. 00:18:19.839 --> 00:18:26.640 You know, she doesn't want everyone that she just touched to know that by the way, I just made you unclean. 00:18:28.079 --> 00:18:29.440 She shouldn't be there. 00:18:29.759 --> 00:18:32.960 She's breaking the law of Moses just by being there in that crowd. 00:18:33.200 --> 00:18:44.720 So in her mind, she's probably thinking, you know, I'll just slip in, I'll touch the hem of his clothes, I'll be healed, and I'll slip out without anybody knowing, without drawing any attention to myself. 00:18:44.880 --> 00:18:48.640 I'll just get healed without making a scene, and then I'll just escape and be done. 00:18:48.880 --> 00:18:52.720 And so far, the first half of her plan is actually working. 00:18:53.200 --> 00:18:54.319 Verse 29. 00:18:54.720 --> 00:19:01.519 And instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healed it was to help show the depth of the family's grief that they were going through. 00:30:51.200 --> 00:30:56.160 And usually the more wealthy you are, the more mourners and flute players that you could
