00:04:53.199 --> 00:05:03.199 So last Sunday, and I know that seems like it was a really long time ago, Ben was teaching, and we went through Jesus' anointing at Bethany. 00:05:03.439 --> 00:05:08.000 We went through their preparation for the Passover that they went through. 00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:12.800 We saw the institution of the Lord's Supper, so communion. 00:05:13.360 --> 00:05:20.639 And it simply ended in verse 26 with, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. 00:05:20.720 --> 00:05:23.279 And that's exactly where we're picking up here this morning. 00:05:23.519 --> 00:05:24.720 So that's the scene. 00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:31.040 Jesus and his disciples on the Mount of Olives, or maybe even on the way to the Mount of Olives, we don't know for sure. 00:05:31.199 --> 00:05:34.639 And Jesus telling the disciples what is about to happen. 00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:39.839 And I want to point out that Jesus is hours away from his trial. 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:45.839 He's probably roughly only about 12 hours or so away from his crucifixion. 00:05:46.079 --> 00:05:48.399 And he's singing a hymn. 00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:54.879 And he's still placing his time and hard thing to do, to know that you are 12 hours away from crucifixion. 00:06:14.959 --> 00:06:23.920 Now you're only hours away from your rest, from your arrest, and you're still putting your time and because it is written, I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. 00:06:35.519 --> 00:06:41.120 So Jesus is quoting here a prophe prophecy from Zechariah 13, 7. 00:06:42.560 --> scatter, you're all going to deny me in one way or the other. 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:10.240 But the thing that I want us to notice is that Jesus doesn't lash out in anger towards his disciples, even knowing what they're about to do. 00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:18.720 He doesn't lash out in disappointment to them, just knowing that they're about to completely abandon him, his best friends. 00:07:18.959 --> 00:07:26.000 And he just goes on continuing to focus on them, continuing to help his disciples to see more clearly. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:28.000 Look at the second half of verse 27. 00:07:28.079 a lot's about to go down in the next day or so. 00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:45.199 But when it's all done, when it's all over, when I'm risen from the dead three days later, I'm going to head to Galilee. their future needs after he's resurrected from the dead. 00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:17.680 You know, I've lost count of how many times Jesus has explained what exactly is going to happen in these next three days to his disciples as we've gone through the book of Mark. 00:08:17.920 --> 00:08:22.560 But here he clearly says, after I have risen. 00:08:23.680 --> 00:08:28.079 And then after he does rise, does anybody remember what do the disciples do? 00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:34.080 They act like it was the last thing that they ever thought could possibly happen. 00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:35.120 Happens. 00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:40.000 But we're going to get to that when we hit chapter 16 here in Mark in just a couple weeks. 00:08:40.159 --> 00:08:47.440 So verse 29, it says, Peter told him, even if everyone falls away, I will not. 00:08:47.759 --> 00:08:54.000 You know, knowing the end of the story, as I think we all do, this is really painful to read. 00:08:54.240 --> 00:09:01.919 You know, Peter is trying his best to do his best to be a loyal follower of Jesus Christ. 00:09:02.159 --> 00:09:08.639 You know, and as we've seen, Peter's never lacked boldness in everything that we've seen in Mark so far. 00:09:08.879 --> 00:09:19.360 And he's bold enough right here to not only argue with Jesus, but to argue against the prophecy that Jesus just reminded them of in Zechariah. 00:09:19.600 --> 00:09:23.120 And say, not only are you wrong, Jesus, but that prophecy's wrong. 00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:26.320 I'm gonna follow you all the way through your death. 00:09:26.639 --> 00:09:37.919 But what's going to be revealed is that where Peter is strong in his flesh, at least in his own mind, will actually end up being his weakness spiritually. 00:09:38.480 --> 00:09:42.879 Because his confidence is in himself and it's not in Jesus. 00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:51.759 You know, if Peter was able to follow through on this, on everything that he is telling Jesus that he's going 00:10:01.600 Peter was able to go through with this, I think there would be no doubt that Peter was the greatest disciple. 00:10:01.840 --> 00:10:08.960 But in that moment, I think Peter really accurately telling them what's going to happen. 00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:39.360 And he's doing it with extremely great detail. 00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:52.159 Basically, what he's saying is before dawn, before we even see the sun again, because they're in darkness at this point, this very night, Peter, you are going to deny that you even know me three times. 00:10:52.559 --> 00:10:56.080 Verse 31, translations kind of insinuates that he's probably even getting angry with Jesus at this point because Jesus won't believe him. 00:11:30.080 --> 00:11:32.720 That's how confident he is in himself. But in just a few hours, when Peter's feet are held to the fire, we'll see that his confidence is completely misplaced. 00:12:03.919 --> 00:12:09.279 You know, 1 Corinthians chapter 10, verses 12 through 13 say this, and I'll read it to you. 00:12:09.440 --> 00:12:16.000 It says, So whoever thinks he stands must be careful not to fall. 00:12:16.320 --> 00:12:20.799 No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. 00:12:21.120 --> 00:12:22.879 But God is faithful. 00:12:23.120 --> 00:12:27.120 He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able. 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:34.639 But with the temptation, he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to bear it. 00:12:34.960 --> 00:12:41.840 And I bring this up because Peter thought that he could stand 00:13:13.759 And I just imagine at this point that Jesus' heart just must be breaking for his disciples. 00:13:14.559 --> 00:13:36.559 They have all of this misplaced confidence, and he knows that it's about to be completely shattered, and that their lives are going to be completely shattered for about three days, filled with doubt and filled with remorse and fear and mourning and just confusion about everything that just happened, even though Jesus laid it out for them so clearly. 00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:45.919 So now the scene's going to shift from the general location of the Mount of Olives, which it tells us, to a specific place at the foot of the Mount of Olives. 00:13:46.080 --> 00:13:51.200 Verse 32, it says, Then they came to a place named Gethsemane. 00:13:51.360 --> 00:13:53.279 So let's just stop right there. 00:13:53.840 --> 00:13:57.200 Gethsemane is just east of Jerusalem. 00:13:57.600 --> 00:14:03.279 And something that's interesting is that Gethsemane literally means an olive press. 00:14:03.840 --> 00:14:12.639 It was a place where the fruit of the olive trees would be gathered together, so the olives, and they would be crushed to be made into olive oil. 00:14:12.879 --> 00:14:22.559 Which I think is completely appropriate because this is a place that we're going to see Jesus crushed under the weight of the cross that lied ahead of him. 00:14:22.960 --> 00:14:30.720 Crushed under the weight of separation from the Father when Jesus becomes sin for us. 00:14:31.440 --> 00:14:36.320 He's stressed to the point, as we read, where he's 00:14:59.759 Not in Israel, but in a place in your life where you were under so much pressure, where the weight of the world or whatever the situation was was so intense that nothing else other than God would do. 00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:12.080 Where food lost its taste, where things and possessions just didn't matter anymore, where you could feel a literal weight on your shoulders all day long. 00:15:12.320 --> 00:15:18.960 Where you're walking around and you feel like somebody socked you in the stomach and you were finding it even hard to breathe. 00:15:19.440 --> 00:15:25.519 Where you knew no one else would understand exactly what you were going through except for God. 00:15:26.080 --> 00:15:28.399 That's where Jesus is right now. 00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:32.960 But so much more all of his disciples take a seat, and then he takes three of those disciples, and they go on just a little bit further into Gethsemane. 00:16:08.559 --> 00:16:12.000 And what does he tell those three specific disciples? 00:16:12.559 --> 00:16:14.799 He says, stay awake. 00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:23.759 And then he admits to these three that he is so grieved that he is so filled with sorrow that it's almost to the point of death for him. 00:16:24.240 --> 00:16:25.519 Verse 35. 00:16:26.480 --> 00:16:37.919 He, so Jesus, went a little further than those three disciples, fell to the ground, and he prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 00:16:38.159 --> 00:16:42.480 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. 00:16:42.799 --> 00:16:45.440 Take this cup his petition take this cup away from me. 00:17:13.039 --> 00:17:17.599 This cup that Jesus was about to bear, it wasn't only torture. 00:17:18.480 --> 00:17:23.680 This cup that he was about to bear was so much more than that. 00:17:24.640 --> 00:17:36.559 And I really believe that more so than the torture that was coming, it was the separation from God that Jesus was about to experience that was grieving him so deeply. 00:17:36.799 --> 00:17:50.160 2 Corinthians 5 21 says, He made the one who did not know sin, referring to Jesus, to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 00:17:50.960 --> 00:17:53.519 Jesus was about to become sin. 00:17:54.240 --> 00:17:56.319 He was about to become our sin. 00:17:56.640 --> 00:18:07.680 And Isaiah 59, 2 says, But your iniquities are separating you from God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he does not listen. 00:18:08.079 --> 00:18:12.079 Jesus is about to become, and please hear me in this. 00:18:16.960 --> 00:18:22.480 He's about to become exactly what brings separation between God and humanity. 00:18:22.720 --> 00:18:25.279 He's about to become sin for us. 00:18:25.519 --> 00:18:29.359 He's about to become what God hides his face from. 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:35.839 That's what Jesus is about to willfully bear for our sake on the cross. 00:18:36.079 --> 00:18:39.440 And in the Gospel of Mark. 00:19:34.880 --> 00:19:42.880 And Luke says, an angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthened him, and being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. 00:19:43.119 --> 00:19:48.319 Then his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 00:19:48.799 --> 00:19:56.079 This is such a different posture and such a different tone than what we just saw from Peter, isn't it? 00:19:56.559 --> 00:19:58.720 Peter's like, hey, I got this. 00:19:58.880 --> 00:20:02.960 You know, I you know, I'll argue with you, I'll argue with prophecy, Jesus. 00:20:03.039 --> Jesus recognizes that he can't do this through the strength of his humanity, through his fleshly strength. 00:20:17.839 --> 00:20:19.599 He needs God in this moment. 00:20:19.759 --> 00:20:23.680 And
