Sorry for the delay!
This week - Esther (who made her debut on the second episode of the show) returns, having programmed a pairing of her own this time. Both films explore her primary area of expertise: coming-of-age and, specific to this season - rites of passage.
Somersault (2004) This sensitive, provocative drama was a huge hit in its home country of Australia, launching the careers of Abbie Cornish and Sam Worthington. Differing drastically from the expected mode of Aussie filmmaking established by the Australian New Wave, Ozploitation and "Meat-Pie Westerns", director Cate Shortland conjures a vivid world, seen through the eyes of a troubled, promiscuous teenager (Cornish).
Tomboy (2011) Having just moved house, ten year old Laurre is able to reinvent herself, opting to present as male after she is mistaken for a boy by a girl in her neighborhood. From Portrait of a Lady on Fire director Céline Sciamma.
