Celebrating 1 Year of Marhabtayn!

Marhabtayn! I hope you're all safe and well. Almost exactly one year ago today, I published the very first episode of Learn Levantine Arabic: Marhabtayn. I always feel so grateful I have a platform to share my love for the Arabic language. I hope it has encouraged you and continues to encourage you to speak Arabic without the fear of making mistakes.

In this special anniversary episode, Lina and I have a very random conversation (see the questions below and you'll understand what I mean!) It's a lot longer than the others, but I really enjoyed recording it. I hope you find it useful :)

1. The Phone vs. Sweets Dilemma (معضلة التلفون والحلويات)

• سايرة: أول سؤال إلك: بتفضلي تعيشي 30 يوم بدون تلفونك ولا كل حياتك بدون حلويات؟
  Saira: First question for you: Would you prefer to live 30 days without your phone or your whole life without sweets?
• لينا: ممم ممكن 30 يوم بدون تلفون عشان أنا بعرف إنه هذا الوقت راح يخلص و راح يرجع التلفون. بس أما كل حياتي بدون حلويات أنا راح يصير يجي على بالي حلويات كل يوم.
  Lina: Mmm, maybe 30 days without a phone because I know that this time will end and the phone will come back. But as for my whole life without sweets, I will start craving sweets every day.
• سايرة: آه صح.
  Saira: Oh, right.
• لينا: الحلويات شيء مهم كمان، بالنسبة إليكِ كمان، صح؟
  Lina: Sweets are an important thing too, for you as well, right?
• سايرة: صح، آه أكيد صح. فـ بس فكرت يعني... ممم إذا بتفكري بهذا الموضوع ممكن تنزلي واتساب على اللاب توب تبعكِ إذا ما عندكِ تلفون، يعني في في حل.
  Saira: Right, oh absolutely right. So, I just thought, I mean... mmm, if you think about this topic, you could download WhatsApp on your laptop if you don't have a phone, meaning there is, there is a solution.
• لينا: أه صح، أوكي هذه فكرة منيحية. يعني في loophole (ثغرة).
  Lina: Oh right, okay, this is a good idea. Meaning there is a loophole.
• لينا: بالظبط يعني 30 يوم بدون تلفون ممكن مش كتير كتير صعب، يعني أحياناً إذا بتروحي على الشغل ما بتستخدمي تلفون معظم اليوم، بتقدري تكملي كمان كم ساعة بالبيت بدون تلفون وعلى اللاب توب زي ما حكيتي فـ... يعني 30 يوم بدون تلفون مش نهاية العالم، بس كل الحياة بدون حلويات هاي تقريباً نهاية العالم.
  Lina: Exactly. I mean, 30 days without a phone might not be very, very hard. Like, sometimes if you go to work, you don't use your phone most of the day. You can continue for a few more hours at home without a phone, and use the laptop like you said, so... I mean, 30 days without a phone is not the end of the world, but a whole life without sweets, that is almost the end of the world.
• سايرة: آه صح 100% وما بدي أكون حزينة ببقية حياتي (تضحك). فـ ممكن بعمل يعني 10 أيام أو فترة صغيرة بس كل بقية حياتي هذا كتير صعب. فـ آه.
  Saira: Oh right, 100%, and I don't want to be sad for the rest of my life (laughs). So maybe I could do, like, 10 days or a short period, but for the whole rest of my life, this is very hard. So yeah.

2. One Food for the Rest of Your Life (أكل واحد كل حياتك)

• سايرة: السؤال التاني: إذا لازم تاكلي أكل واحد كل حياتك شو بتاكلي؟
  Saira: The second question: If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would you eat?
• لينا: ممم، بختار الشاورما! بعرف إنه مش صحي كتير بس ما بزهق منها أبداً، فيها بروتين وخبز وكل شيء. وأنتِ؟
  Lina: Mmm, I choose shawarma! I know it's not very healthy, but I never get tired of it, it has protein, bread, and everything. And you?
• سايرة: أنا بختار المعكرونة أو الباستا عشان بتقدري تعملي فيها أشكال مختلفة وتغيري الصوص، يعني يوم صوص حمرا ويوم بيضا فـ ما بتزهقي بسرعة.
  Saira: I choose macaroni or pasta because you can make it in different shapes and change the sauce, like one day red sauce and one day white sauce, so you don't get bored quickly.

3. Eating a Live Spider for Money (أكل عنكبوت عايش عشان المصاري)

• سايرة: السؤال التالت: قديش مصاري رح تقبلي عشان تاكلي عنكبوت عايش؟
  Saira: The third question: How much money would you accept to eat a live spider?
• لينا: وععع، ولا أي مبلغ! لو بتعطيني ملايين العالم ما باكل عنكبوت عايش بيمشي بتمّي، بتموت من الخوف قبل ما تبلعيه!
  Lina: Eww, no amount of money! Even if you gave me all the millions in the world, I wouldn't eat a live spider walking in my mouth, you'd die of fear before you even swallow it!
• سايرة: (تضحك) أنا كنت بفكر إذا المبلغ كتير كتير كبير، يعني ملايين، ممكن أغمض عيوني وأبلعه بسرعة، بس عن جد المقابلة بتخوّف.
  Saira: (Laughs) I was thinking if the amount was very, very big, like millions, maybe I could close my eyes and swallow it quickly, but really, the thought of it is terrifying.

4. Choosing a Superpower (القوة الخارقة)

• سايرة: السؤال الرابع: لو كان عندك قوة خارقة شو بدك تكون؟
  Saira: Question four: If you had a superpower, what would you want it to be?
• لينا: الاختفاء! عشان بتقدري تروحي وين ما بدكِ بدون ما حدا يشوفكِ، وبتقدري تسمعي الناس شو بيحكوا بدون ما يعرفوا إنكِ موجودة.
  Lina: Invisibility! Because you can go wherever you want without anyone seeing you, and you can hear what people are saying without them knowing you are there.
• سايرة: أوه، يعني بدكِ تسمعي الأشياء اللّي بيحكوا عنكِ؟ (تضحك) مش عني بس، بشكل عام، يعني الفضول!
  Saira: Oh, so you want to hear the things they say about you? (Laughs) [Lina:] Not just about me, just in general—you know, curiosity!
• سايرة: آه، فـ أنا كنت بفكر بالطيران عشان السفر، الطيران أسهل بكتير وأسرع بكتير وما في أزمة بالطيارة.
  Saira: Ah, well I was thinking about flying for travel. Flying is much easier, much faster, and there's no crowding on planes.
• لينا: صح، الطيران كمان حلو، بس الاختفاء بحسه أحسن.
  Lina: True, flying is also nice, but I feel invisibility is better.

5. The Talking Dog (الكلب اللي بيحكي بلغة البشر)

• سايرة: السؤال الخامس: شو رح تعملي لو كلب بلش يحكي معك بلغة بشرية؟
  Saira: What would you do if a dog started talking to you in human language?
• لينا: أول شيء بنصدم وبفكر حالي عم بحلم! بس بعدين بسأله عن حياته وكيف بيشوف العالم، بكون حابة أعرف شو بيفكروا الحيوانات عن البشر.
  Lina: First, I'd be shocked and think I'm dreaming! But then I'd ask him about his life and how he sees the world, I'd love to know what animals think about humans.
• سايرة: واو صح! بكون كتير غريب بس ممتع بنفس الوقت، بتصيروا أصحاب وبتقدروا تحكوا مع بعض دائماً.
  Saira: Wow, right! It would be very strange but fun at the same time, you'd become friends and could talk to each other all the time.

6. Becoming an Animal (لو بتقدري تكوني حيوان)

• سايرة: السؤال السادس: لو بتقدري تكوني حيوان شو رح تكوني؟
  Saira: If you could be an animal, what would you be?
• لينا: بختار أكون عصفور عشان أطير فوق كل مكان وأشوف العالم من فوق بدون حدود ولا جوازات سفر.
  Lina: I choose to be a bird so I can fly over everywhere and see the world from above without borders or passports.
• سايرة: أنا بختار أكون بسة (قطة) بالبيت، نايمة طول اليوم والناس بتطعميني وبتدلعني بدون أي مسؤولية أو شغل.
  Saira: I choose to be a house cat, sleeping all day with people feeding me and pampering me without any responsibility or work.

7. House of One Colour (كل شيء ببيتك بلون واحد)

• سايرة: السؤال السابع: لو كل شي ببيتك لازم يكون بلون واحد أي لون بتختاري؟
  Saira: If everything in your house was one colour, what colour would you choose?
• لينا: بختار اللون الأبيض أو البيج عشان يعطي وسع للمكان ويكون مريح للعين، الألوان الفاقعة بتجيب الصداع.
  Lina: I choose white or beige so it gives space to the place and is comfortable for the eye, bright colors cause headaches.
• سايرة: صح، أنا كمان بختار رمادي فاتح أو بيج، بكون هادي ونظيف.
  Saira: True, I also choose light grey or beige, it's calm and clean.

8. Working in a Circus (الشغل في السيرك)

• سايرة: السؤال الثامن: إذا اشتغلتي في سيرك شو رح يكون شغلك؟
  Saira: If you worked in a circus, what would your job be?
• لينا: بكون الساحرة اللي بتعمل حركات سحرية وبتخفي الأشياء، هاد الشيء دايماً بيحمس الناس.
  Lina: I'd be the magician who does magic tricks and makes things disappear, that always excites people.
• سايرة: حلو! أنا بختار أكون الأكروبات اللي بطيروا بالهوا بالحبال، حركاتهم فيها فن ورشاقة وبتطلع تجنن.
  Saira: Nice! I choose to be the acrobat flying in the air with ropes, their movements have art and agility, and it turns out amazing.

9. Stuck in an Elevator with One Song (أغنية وحدة في المصعد)

• سايرة: السؤال التاسع: إذا علقتِ في مصعد وكان لازم تسمعي أغنية وحدة أي أغنية بتسمعي؟
  Saira: If you got stuck in an elevator and had to listen to only one song, what song would you listen to?
• لينا: ممم، بختار أغنية هادية وكلاسيكية، أو شيء لـ فيروز عشان ما تخليني أتوتر وأنا علقانة في مكان ضيق.
  Lina: Mmm, I'd choose a calm, classical song, or something by Fairouz so it doesn't make me nervous while I'm stuck in a tight space.
• سايرة: فكرة حلوة! فيروز دايماً بتعطي راحة نفسية وهدوء، أنا كمان بختار أغنية هادية بدون كلمات كتير عشان ما أزهق منها بسرعة.
  Saira: Great idea! Fairouz always gives peace of mind and calmness. I would also choose a calm song without many lyrics so I don't get sick of it quickly.

10. Describe Yourself in Three Words (وصف حالك بتلات كلمات)

• سايرة: السؤال العاشر: كيف بتوصفي حالك بتلات كلمات؟
  Saira: How do you describe yourself in three words?
• لينا: بوصف حالي بـ: صبورة، فضولية، وإيجابية. وأنتِ سايرة؟
  Lina: I describe myself as: patient, curious, and positive. And you, Saira?
• سايرة: ممم، أنا بختار: طموحة، محبة للأكل (تضحك)، ومتفائلة.
  Saira: Mmm, I choose: ambitious, a food lover (laughs), and optimistic.

11. If Your Life Was a Novel (لو حياتك كانت رواية)

• سايرة: السؤال الحادي عشر: لو حياتك كانت رواية شو رح يكون عنوانها؟
  Saira: If your life was a novel, what would the title be?
• لينا: بختار عنوان "رحلة البحث عن الهدوء"، لأنه الحياة دايماً سريعة وأنا بحب أدور على الروقان.
  Lina: I'd choose the title "The Journey of Searching for Calm," because life is always fast and I like to look for peace of mind.
• سايرة: واو عنوان عميق! أنا بختار "مغامرات عشوائية في بلاد غريبة"، لأنه حياتي دايماً فيها تغيير وسفر وأشياء غير متوقعة.
  Saira: Wow, a deep title! I choose "Random Adventures in Strange Lands," because my life always involves change, travel, and unexpected things.

12. Eating a Crayon from the Box (أكل لون خشب من علبة الألوان)

• سايرة: السؤال الثاني عشر: لو لازم تاكلي لون خشب من علبة الألوان أي لون رح تاكلي؟
  Saira: If you had to eat a crayon from the box, what colour would you eat?
• لينا: (تضحك) شو هاد السؤال الغريب! بختار اللون الزهري أو الفراولة، بحس طعمه بكون متل الحلوى مع إنه مجرد خشب!
  Lina: (Laughs) What a weird question! I choose pink or strawberry, I feel like its taste would be like candy even though it's just wood/crayon!
• سايرة: أنا بختار اللون الأصفر عشان بيشبه الموز أو الليمون، بحس عقلي برتاح أكتر لو أكلت لون بيشبه الأكل الحقيقي (تضحك).
  Saira: I choose yellow because it looks like bananas or lemons. I feel my mind would be more at ease if I ate a color that resembles real food (laughs).

13. Choosing a Disney Character (شخصية من شخصيات دزني)

• سايرة: السؤال الثالث عشر: لو كنتِ شخصية من شخصيات دزني أي شخصية رح تكوني؟
  Saira: If you were a Disney character, which character would you be?
• لينا: بختار أكون "بل" (Belle) من الجميلة والوحش، لأني كتير بحب القراءة والكتب وبحب أشوف الجمال الداخلي في الناس.
  Lina: I choose to be Belle from Beauty and the Beast, because I really love reading and books, and I like to see the inner beauty in people.
• سايرة: أنا بختار أكون "راپونزل" (Rapunzel)، بحب طاقتها وحماسها للمغامرة واكتشاف العالم برة البرج اللي كانت عايشة فيه.
  Saira: I choose to be Rapunzel. I love her energy, her enthusiasm for adventure, and discovering the world outside the tower she lived in.

14. Time Travel: Past or Future? (آلة الزمن: الماضي أو المستقبل)

• سايرة: السؤال الرابع عشر والأخير: لو كان عندك آلة زمن رح تسافري للماضي أو رح تسافري للمستقبل؟
  Saira: If you could time travel, would you travel into the past or into the future?
• لينا: بختار المستقبل! كتير عندي فضول أشوف كيف رح تصير التكنولوجيا والناس والعالم بعد مية سنة من هلا. الماضي خلاص بنعرفه من التاريخ.
  Lina: I choose the future! I'm very curious to see how technology, people, and the world will become a hundred years from now. The past we already know from history.
• سايرة: أنا بالعكس، بختار الماضي! حابة أعيش في فترة زمان القديمة، فترة الهدوء واللبس الكلاسيكي والحياة البسيطة بدون إنترنت وتلفونات.
  Saira: I'm the opposite, I choose the past! I'd love to live in the old days, the period of calmness, classic clothing, and simple life without internet and phones.
