الجزء الأول: المقدمة والدردشة

Saira: مرحباً يا جماعة، وأهلاً وسهلاً بالحلقة الثانية. اليوم أنا ولينا راح نحكي عن موضوع كثير مهم. الوباء كورونا. فخلينا نبلش. مرحباً لينا كيفكِ؟

English: Hello everyone, and welcome to the second episode. Today, Lina and I are going to talk about a very important topic: the Corona pandemic. So, let's get started. Hello Lina, how are you?

Lina: مرحبتين، أنا منيح (منيحة)، وأنتِ كيفكِ؟

English: Hello twice (Hi there)! I'm good, and how are you?

Saira: أنا بخير الحمد لله. شوية تعبانة من شغلي بس حاسة حالي محظوظة لأنه بشتغل من بيتي.

English: I'm fine, thank God. A little tired from my work, but I feel lucky because I work from home.

Lina: أه كويس.. كويس كثير.

English: Oh good.. very good.

Saira: وصار لي سنة ونصف تقريباً عم أتعلم اللغة العربية معكِ، وأنتِ واحدة من أفضل المعلمين (المعلمات) بالعالم عن جد.

English: And I've been learning Arabic with you for about a year and a half, and you are truly one of the best teachers in the world.

Lina: شكراً كثير، عن جد أنتِ.. أنتِ لطيفة.

English: Thank you so much, really you are.. you are kind.

Saira: آه عفواً، شكراً لينا. وقبل ما نبلش الأسئلة عن كورونا، ممكن تخبرينا شوية معلومات عن حالكِ؟ يعني وين بتسكني؟ أو شو بتحبي تعملي؟ أو هيك؟

English: Oh, you're welcome, thank you Lina. And before we start the questions about Corona, could you tell us a bit of information about yourself? I mean, where do you live? Or what do you like to do? Or things like that?

Lina: أيوا أكيد. أنا اسمي لينا، أنا من الأردن وساكنة في عمان. بدرس عربي على آيتوكي من ممكن خمس أو ست سنين. وهلا أنا في البيت، بدرس في آيتوكي وبحب بشكل عام أدرس لغات. درست ألماني وهلا عم أتعلم عبري. وفي وقت الفراغ بحب أعمل رياضة، بس هلا مش ممكن. وكمان.. شو كمان؟ أيوا بس، هذا كل شيء.

English: Yes, sure. My name is Lina, I'm from Jordan and I live in Amman. I've been teaching Arabic on iTalki for maybe five or six years. And now I'm at home, I teach on iTalki, and generally, I love studying languages. I studied German and now I'm learning Hebrew. In my free time, I like to do sports, but right now it's not possible. And also.. what else? Yeah, that's it, that's everything.

Saira: آه، حلو.

English: Oh, nice.

😷 Part 2: The Situation in Jordan vs. the UK

الجزء الثاني: الوضع في الأردن وبريطانيا

Saira: اوكي، فخلينا نروح على موضوع اليوم. فصار لي (صار له) أكثر من سنة لما بلش وباء كورونا، وكيف الوضع بالأردن هلا؟

English: Okay, so let's move to today's topic. It has been more than a year since the Corona pandemic started, so how is the situation in Jordan now?

Lina: يعني هلا الوضع مش كثير منيح، في إغلاق. كل يوم لازم كل المحلات يسكروا في الساعة ستة، والناس بيرجعوا على البيت في الساعة سبعة. ويوم الجمعة في إغلاق كامل, يعني ممنوع أي شخص يطلع من البيت. وتقريباً من أسبوعين الحالات نفس الشيء كل يوم، مش أكثر ومش أقل، ممكن هذا شيء كويس. يعني بكرة رمضان وراح يكون في إغلاق كل رمضان كمان. كيف الوضع في بريطانيا؟

English: I mean, right now the situation isn't very good, there is a lockdown. Every day, all shops must close at 6:00, and people return home by 7:00. On Fridays, there is a full lockdown, meaning no one is allowed to leave the house. For about two weeks, the cases have been the same every day, not more and not less, maybe that's a good thing. I mean, tomorrow is Ramadan, and there will be a lockdown for the whole of Ramadan as well. How is the situation in Britain?

Saira: في بريطانيا، إحنا في إغلاق ثالث، وكل شيء مسكر لما (من) أربع شهور. مثلاً محلات، محلات أواعي، أو مطاعم، أو نوادي رياضة. ومؤخراً قبل أسبوعين خفت شوية الإجراءات، فهلا بتشوفكِ (بتشوفي) أصحابكِ برا، مثلاً بحدائق أو أي مكان اللي برا. ومن اليوم فتحت كل محلات أواعي ومطاعم، بس اللي الناس.. يعني إذا بدكِ تأكلي برا بأي مطعم، مش جوا. وإذا بدكِ تأكلي جوا أي مطعم مع أصحابكِ لازم تستني شهر أكثر.

English: In Britain, we are in a third lockdown, and everything has been closed for four months. For example shops, clothing shops, or restaurants, or gyms. Recently, two weeks ago, the restrictions eased a bit, so now you can see your friends outside, for example in parks or any place outdoors. And starting today, all clothing shops and restaurants opened, but for people.. I mean, if you want to eat outside at any restaurant, not inside. And if you want to eat inside any restaurant with your friends, you have to wait a month more.

Lina: عن جد! في الأردن ممكن تأكلي جوا المطعم بس قبل الساعة ستة.

English: Really! In Jordan, you can eat inside the restaurant, but only before 6:00.

Saira: آه، وإذا الناس ما بيسمعوا (ما بيلتزموا بـ) منع التجول، شو راح يصير؟ يعني إذا الناس بيطلعوا من بيوتهم بعد الساعة سبعة؟

English: Oh, and if people don't listen to (obey) the curfew, what will happen? I mean, if people go out of their houses after 7:00?

Lina: في مخالفة أو غرامة للناس اللي بيطلعوا المسا. مش متذكرة قديش بالضبط بس ممكن.. ممكن 100 دينار، يعني أو 100 دولار، شيء مثل هيك. وكمان ممكن سجن بس أنا مش متأكدة. ويعني إذا بتمشي في الشارع هاي مشكلة، بس إذا بتسوقي السيارة هادي مشكلة كثير أكبر.

English: There is a violation (fine) or penalty for people who go out in the evening. I don't remember exactly how much, but maybe.. maybe 100 Dinars, or 100 Dollars, something like that. And also possible jail time, but I'm not sure. And I mean, if you are walking in the street that's a problem, but if you are driving a car, that's a much bigger problem.

Saira: أمم، اوكي، بدلي (يعني بتضلي) في بيتكِ بعد الساعة سبعة.

English: Hmm, okay, so you stay in your house after 7:00.

Lina: أيوا، وكل يوم.. كل اليوم.

English: Yes, and every day.. the whole day.

💉 Part 3: Vaccinations & Future Plans

الجزء الثالث: التطعيم وخطط المستقبل

Saira: وكمان هون، معظم الناس بيشتغلوا من البيت، من البيت، غير الناس بيشتغلوا بالمستشفيات أو صيدليات، أو الناس اللي بيشتغلوا في بيوت كبار السن. وبرنامج التطعيم منيح، فـ 32 مليون تقريباً شخص أخذوا جرة (الجرعة) الأولى. والحالات أقل من قبل، يعني حوالي ثلاثة وأربعة آلاف حالة كل يوم، ومش كثير ناس ماتوا من الفيروس كمان، فـ إغلاق فعال. آه، منيح.

English: And also here, most people work from home, from home, except for people working in hospitals or pharmacies, or people who work in care homes for the elderly. And the vaccination program is good, so about 32 million people have taken the first dose. And cases are less than before, meaning around three or four thousand cases every day, and not many people died from the virus either, so lockdown is effective. Yeah, good.

Lina: أيوا، الإغلاق والتطعيم يعني 30 مليون هذا تقريباً نص الناس في بريطانيا.

English: Yes, lockdown and vaccination, meaning 30 million, that's almost half the people in Britain.

Saira: آه صح، وقديش الناس أخذوا مطعوم بالأردن؟

English: Ah right, and how many people took the vaccine in Jordan?

Lina: ممكن صاروا.. ممكن 400 ألف، يعني 4% من السكان في الأردن، عشان سكان الأردن 10 مليون. هذا مش كثير، يعني هذا.. أيوا بالضبط.

English: Maybe they became.. maybe 400,000, meaning 4% of the population in Jordan, because Jordan's population is 10 million. This is not a lot, I mean this is.. yeah, exactly.

Saira: بس إن شاء الله راح يعطوا المطعوم أسرع بعد.. آه.

English: But hopefully, they will give the vaccine faster later.. yeah.

Lina: إن شاء الله، نشوف.

English: Hopefully, we'll see.

Saira: راح نشوف، أنا دائماً بقول نفس الشيء كل يوم: راح نشوف!

English: We'll see, I always say the same thing every day: we'll see!

Lina: شو بتحبي تعملي بعد ما يخلص الوباء؟

English: What do you like to do after the pandemic ends?

Lina: أول شيء بدي أعمله، بدي أسافر.

English: The first thing I want to do, I want to travel.

Saira: ووين أول مكان بدكِ تروحي؟

English: And where is the first place you want to go?

Lina: صار لي فترة أنا بتفرج على فيديوهات عن اليابان، وأنا كثير بدي أروح على اليابان، فممكن إن شاء الله إذا هاي السنة كان الوضع أحسن، في آخر السنة أنا بدي أروح.

English: For a while now I've been watching videos about Japan, and I really want to go to Japan, so maybe hopefully if this year the situation gets better, at the end of the year I want to go.

Saira: آه إن شاء الله. وأنتِ شو أول شيء بدكِ تعمليه؟

English: Oh, hopefully. And you, what is the first thing you want to do?

Saira: آه، سو بدي أسافر إلى الأردن وتركيا.

English: Oh, so I want to travel to Jordan and Turkey.

Lina: أهلاً وسهلاً.

English: Welcome! (You are most welcome).

Saira: آه شكراً. بس بصراحة بدي أروح أي مكان اللي مش بيتي!

English: Oh thank you. But honestly, I want to go anywhere that is not my house!

Lina: إن شاء الله إنه ممكن هاي السنة، لسا إحنا في شهر أربعة.

English: Hopefully it's possible this year, we are still only in April.

Saira: آه، وشو كمان غير السفر، شو بتحبي تعملي بعد ما يخلص الوباء؟

English: Yeah, and what else besides traveling, what do you like to do after the pandemic finishes?

Lina: بدي أروح على مطعم، أنا ما رحت على مطعم من زمان. وممكن هلا أنا بدرس في البيت، فممكن بدي أدرس في كافيه وبدي أقعد يعني مع أصحابي برا. بس بشكل عام يعني.. يعني حياتي ممكن تكون نفس الشيء.

English: I want to go to a restaurant, I haven't been to a restaurant in a long time. And maybe now I study at home, so maybe I want to study in a café and sit, you know, with my friends outside. But generally speaking.. I mean, my life might be the same.

Saira: آه.. وراح نشوف.

English: Yeah.. and we will see.

🧠 Part 4: Deep Impact of the Pandemic & Wrap Up

الجزء الرابع: الأثر العميق للوباء والختام

Lina: طيب عندي سؤال إلكِ: كيف أثر الوباء على حياتنا؟

English: Alright, I have a question for you: how did the pandemic affect our lives?

Saira: آه، ففي كثير مشاكل بالمستواى الأكلية (المستوى العقلي) والاجتماعي والاقتصادي، عشان مستوى مذكر.

English: Oh, so there are many problems on the mental, social, and economic level—because "mustawa" (level) is masculine.

Lina: آه، المستوى العقلي؟ عقلي.

English: Oh, the mental level? Mental.

Lina: العقلي.

English: Mental.

Saira: العقلي، اوكي، شكراً. يعني الاكتئاب والقلق، والإدمان، العزلة الاجتماعي (الاجتماعية). وكمان الناس اللي عندهم مشاكل الصحة العقلية قبل كورونا أسوأ من قبل. وكمان العنف المنزلي زيادة لأنه الناس في البيت طول اليوم. وفي زيادة في مستويات والمخدرات والكحول، فكثير صعب.

English: Mental, okay, thank you. Meaning depression, anxiety, addiction, and social isolation. Also, people who had mental health issues before Corona are worse than before. And also domestic violence increased because people are in the house all day. And there is an increase in the levels of drugs and alcohol, so it's very difficult.

Lina: صحيح.

English: True.

Saira: آه، وكمان في المستوى الاجتماعي، كورونا غير طريقة شغلنا وتعليمنا والتواصل مع ناس ثانيين. وبسبب قواعد التباعد الاجتماعي، إحنا عايشين بالعالم الافتراضي. وآه كل الناس في البيت.

English: Yeah, and also on the social level, Corona changed the way we work, our education, and communication with other people. And because of social distancing rules, we are living in a virtual world. And yeah, all people are at home.

Lina: وبتفكري هادي.. هاي الأشياء راح تضل بعد كورونا?

English: And do you think these.. these things will stay after Corona?

Saira: أمم آه، بظن حيضل بعد كورونا. كثير شركات خاصة في إنجلترا بيحكوا للموظفين حتى نهاية السنة ما في مشكلة إذا الموظفين بدهم بيشتغلوا من البيت أو أي مكان، مش لازم بيروحوا إلى المكتب.

English: Um yeah, I think it will stay after Corona. A lot of companies, especially in England, tell employees until the end of the year there is no problem if employees want to work from home or anywhere, they don't have to go to the office.

Lina: هذا ممكن شيء منيح للناس مثلاً اللي بيسكنوا كثير بعيد عن الشغل، أو الناس اللي بيحبوا يشتغلوا من البيت.

English: This might be a good thing for people, for example, who live very far from work, or people who like to work from home.

Saira: آه صح. وفي الأردن، في كل الناس بيشتغلوا في بيوتهم أو لأ لازم بيروحوا على المكتب؟

English: Oh right. And in Jordan, is everyone working in their homes or no, they have to go to the office?

Lina: يعني حسب الشغل، بس في كثير ناس كمان تركوا شغلهم. مثلاً السياحة في الأردن شيء كثير مهم عشان فيها البتراء والبحر الميت وهاي الأماكن، والناس اللي بيشتغلوا في السياحة ما كان عندهم شغل تقريباً كل السنة هاي والسنة الماضية. فـ تركوا شغلهم وهذا كان شوية صعب عليهم. كمان الإغلاق يعني للناس اللي بيشتغلوا في المحلات، في المطاعم وهيك، الإغلاق خصوصخصوصاً يوم الجمعة كمان كان كثير صعب على الناس. بس طبعاً يعني الشيء أسهل للناس اللي بيقدروا يشتغلوا من البيت.

English: I mean it depends on the job, but many people also left (lost) their jobs. For example, tourism in Jordan is something very important because it has Petra, the Dead Sea, and these places, and people who work in tourism had no work for almost this whole year and last year. So they left their jobs and this was a bit hard for them. Also, the lockdown, meaning for people who work in shops, restaurants, and so on, the lockdown, especially on Friday, was also very hard on people. But of course, I mean, things are easier for people who can work from home.

Saira: يعني المستوى الاقتصادي كثير ناس خسروا شغلهم، ومعدل البطالي (البطالة) عالي.

English: Meaning on the economic level, many people lost their jobs, and the unemployment rate is high.

Lina: البطالة.

English: Unemployment.

Saira: البطالة عالي، يعني. بفتكر في كل دول بالعالم.

English: Unemployment is high, I mean. I think in every country in the world.

Lina: أيوا.

English: Yes.

Saira: اوكي، فخلصنا الأسئلة لينا، شكراً كثير لحديثكِ معي، وراح نحكي عن ثاني موضوع مش كثير عميق في الحلقة الجاية.
