Marhabtayn! In this episode, I will draw on my studies in Business Psychology and talk about what organisations should consider when asking staff to return to work post-lockdown, specifically the importance of having open conversations with staff about how comfortable they are returning to work and ensuring safety guidelines are in place such as social distancing.

Saira: مرحباً يا جماعة، وأهلاً وسهلاً بكم في الحلقة الرابعة.
Welcome, everyone, and welcome to the fourth episode.
Saira: اليوم راح أحكي لحالي.
Today, I am going to talk by myself.
Saira: من الحلقة الأولى بتعرفوا إني درست ماجستير بعلم نفس الشغل، يعني business psychology. From the first episode, you know that I studied for a Master's degree in occupational psychology, meaning business psychology.
Saira: بحب هذا المجال كتير. I love this field a lot.
Saira: فاليوم راح أحكي عن شو لازم يعملوا الشركات عشان يهتموا بموظفينهم أو بصحتهم النفسية.
So today, I am going to talk about what companies need to do in order to take care of their employees or their mental health.
Saira: لسه عشان بأول كورونا وبيأثر على حياتنا بطرق مختلفة.
Because we are still in the beginning of Corona, and it is affecting our lives in different ways.
Saira: بإنكلترا إحنا خلصنا إغلاق تقريباً، ومؤخراً الحكومة خففت الإجراءات وشوي شوي عم نرجع للوضع طبيعي.
In England, we have almost finished lockdown, and recently the government eased the measures, and little by little we are returning to a normal situation.
Saira: بس في كتير أشياء لازم نفكر فيها، مثلاً الرجوع على الشغل.
But there are many things we need to think about, for example, returning to work.
Saira: في شركات حكوا مش مشكلة إذا موظفينهم بيشتغلوا من البيت أو مكان تاني دائماً أو حتى نهاية السنة.
There are companies that said it is not a problem if their employees work from home or another place permanently, or even until the end of the year.
Saira: الشركات شافت إنه صار لهم أكتر من سنة موظفينهم ما بيشتغلوا من المكتب وهم منتجين. Companies saw that it has been more than a year that their employees haven't been working from the office, and they are productive.
Saira: مش ضروري المشوار، يعني الناس بيسكنوا بعيد من المكتب ما كان لازم يصحوا بكير كتير بكير، وبروحوا بالمواصلات لساعة أو أكتر.
The commute isn't necessary, meaning people who live far from the office didn't have to wake up early, very early, and travel by public transport for an hour or more.
Saira: موظفين مش تعبانين من هذا المشوار وبيأدوا أكتر وقت مع عيلتهم.
Employees are not tired from this commute, and they spend more time with their family.
Saira: المهم إنه في موظفين لازم يرجعوا على مكاتبهم، ممكن كل يوم أو يومين أو تلات أيام كل أسبوع. The important thing is that there are employees who must return to their offices, maybe every day, or two days, or three days every week.
Saira: حتى لو يوم واحد، كتير مهم للشركات بيفكروا بالصحة النفسية لموظفينهم.
Even if it's just one day, it is very important for companies to think about the mental health of their employees.
Saira: أول شيء كتير مهم بيسألوا للموظفين: أنتوا مرتاحين لما تيجوا على المكتب؟
First, it is very important that they ask the employees: are you comfortable when you come to the office?
Saira: كتير الناس عندهم قلق عشان الوباء، ممكن هذا القلق يكون أسوأ من قبل.
A lot of people have anxiety because of the pandemic, maybe this anxiety is worse than before.
Saira: صار لهم سنة ما كانوا حوالين ناس بيعرفوهم أو في مجموعات، وبيخافوا من الفايروس.
It has been a year that they haven't been around people they know or in groups, and they are afraid of the virus.
Saira: خاصة إذا لازم يروحوا بالمواصلات أو إذا التباعد الاجتماعي ممكن أو لأ.
Especially if they have to travel by public transport, or if social distancing is possible or not.
Saira: كمان إذا الناس عندهم كتير أولويات، يعني بالبيت هم مع أولادهم، فهاي فكرة صعبة.
Also, if people have many priorities, meaning at home they are with their children, so this is a difficult idea.
Saira: كتير مهم بيفكروا بالظروف الشخصية وكيف بيحسوا الموظفين.
It is very important that they think about personal circumstances and how the employees feel.
Saira: تاني شيء، ممكن الناس اللي بيسكنوا لحالهم وبيفضلوا يروحوا على المكتب، فبيحكوا مع ناس وجه لوجه.
Secondly, maybe people who live alone prefer to go to the office, so they talk with people face-to-face.
Saira: تالت شيء، مهم للشركات بيحطوا إرشادات السلامة مثلاً إجراءات التباعد الاجتماعي، مثلاً إنه ما يكون كتير ناس بنفس الغرفة بنفس الوقت.
Thirdly, it is important for companies to put safety guidelines, for example, social distancing measures, like not having too many people in the same room at the same time.
Saira: وكمان يكون في معقم موجود بكل بكل مكتب. And also that there is sanitizer available in every, every office.
Saira: هاي الفكرة راح تساعد موظفيهم يكون عندهم أمان بالشغل. This idea will help their employees to have a sense of safety at work.
Saira: أهم شيء بيعطوهم خيار يشتغلوا من البيت أو يشتغلوا من مكان تاني، ويدعموهم شو ما اختاروا. The most important thing is that they give them the choice to work from home or work from another place, and support them whatever they choose.
Saira: وكمان المدراء يعملوا مناقشة مفتوحة مع الموظفين، وبيفهموا أكتر إذا موظفينهم بيحتاجوا أي شيء عشان يكونوا مرتاحين أكتر.
And also, managers should hold an open discussion with the employees, and understand more if their employees need anything in order to be more comfortable.
