• English: Hello everyone, and welcome to a new episode of the "Marhabtain" podcast. Thank you so much for listening! Today I am very happy because I have a special guest; her name is Zubaida, and she is my close friend, and she lives in Jordan. Hello Zubaida, how are you?

• English: Hi Saira, how are you?

Saira:

• Arabic: أنا منيحة، الحمد لله. كيفك أنتِ؟
• English: I'm good, thank you. How are you?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أنا بخير، شكراً.
• English: I'm fine, thanks.

Saira:

• Arabic: جيد، جيد الحمد لله. أنا كتير مبسوطة عشان أنا معك وجه لوجه في الأردن.
• English: Good, good thank God. I am very happy because I am with you face-to-face in Jordan.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: وأنا كمان. ياي!
• English: Me too. Yay!

Saira:

• Arabic: بس... ممكن أول شيء، احكي لنا شوي معلومات عن حالك؟
• English: But... maybe first of all, could you tell us a bit of information about yourself?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: عن حالي؟ يا. أوكي. هلو، كيفكم؟ أنا اسمي زبيدة، أنا بسكن بالأردن، بعمان بالعاصمة. عمري 32 سنة. الآن أنا وصايرة بنتبادل اللغة العربية والثقافة، فأنا تعلمت منها أشياء كتير، وهي كمان تعلمت مني أشياء كتير. زرنا كتير أماكن خلال زيارتها الأخيرة اللي هي الآن، لأنه هي زارتني قبل هيك مرتين، وقعدت عندي فترة كتير طويلة. فأنا الآن بحكي لغة إنجليزية بشكل ممتاز، وهي بتحكي اللغة العربية بالعامية بطريقة كتير ممتازة. وتعرّفنا عن كتير أماكن سياحية.
• English: About myself? Yeah. Okay. Hello, how are you all? My name is Zubaida, I live in Jordan, in Amman, the capital. I am 32 years old. Right now, Saira and I are exchanging the Arabic language and culture; I learned many things from her, and she also learned many things from me. We visited many places during her latest visit, which is happening now, because she visited me twice before this and stayed with me for a very long period. So now I speak English excellently, and she speaks colloquial Arabic in a very excellent way. And we got to know many tourist places.

Saira:

• Arabic: أوه، شكراً كتير زبيدة. بس... بدي أسألك، كيف لغتي العربية؟
• English: Oh, thank you very much Zubaida. But... I want to ask you, how is my Arabic?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أوه، كتير ممتازة صايرة.
• English: Oh, it's very excellent, Saira.

Saira:

• Arabic: عنجد؟ شكراً. بس أحياناً لسه أنا لما بحكي عربي، أنا بحس إنه تحت ضغط أو أنا شوي متوترة، لأنه لسه عم بعمل أغلاط. بس الناس هون في الأردن يعني لما بحكي عربي معهم، هم مبسوطين عشان أنا مش الأصل الأردني. فـ... بالنسبة إلك، شو رأيك؟ الناس هون في الأردن هم بيحبوا كتير لما الناس يعني أجنبي بيحكوا عربي؟
• English: Really? Thank you. But sometimes, still, when I speak Arabic, I feel like I'm under pressure or I'm a bit anxious because I'm still making mistakes. But people here in Jordan, meaning when I speak Arabic with them, they are happy because I am not of Jordanian origin. So... as for you, what do you think? Do people here in Jordan really love it when people, meaning foreigners, speak Arabic?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: تمام. أنتِ هلا بتحكي اللغة العربية كتير بطلاقة، ومش بالضرورة كتير إنه تكوني أنتِ بتحكيها بأسلوبنا، لأنه إحنا حتى داخل الأردن بتسمعي كذا لهجة، أو لغة مختلفة يعني مش لغة هي لهجة أكتر. يعني ممكن تسمعي بدوي مختلف عن المدني، مختلف عن الفلاح، عمان مختلف عن منطقة أخرى، فهي في اختلافات بطريقة الكلام، اللي هي بنسميها اللهجة، عرفتِ كيف؟ فمش بالضرورة تحكي أنتِ بأسلوب معين. أنتِ بالعكس كتير سمعتِ وإحنا مع التاكسي، أو بالمحلات، أو لما كنا ننزل شوبينج، إنه ايش كانوا يقولوا لك؟ إنه أنتِ بتحكي اللغة العربية بطلاقة، وكانوا كتير مبسوطين فيكِ، إنه مش أي حدا، مش أي شخص عنده قدرة يتعلم هاي اللغة العربية.
• English: Okay. You speak Arabic very fluently now, and it is not strictly necessary for you to speak it in our exact style, because even within Jordan you hear various dialects—or different language, meaning it's not a different language, it's more of a dialect. Meaning you might hear Bedouin, which is different from urban, different from rural, and Amman is different from another region; so there are differences in the manner of speech, which we call the dialect, you know? So it's not necessary for you to speak in one specific style. On the contrary, you heard a lot when we were with the taxi, or in the shops, or when we went out shopping, what did they use to tell you? That you speak Arabic fluently, and they were very happy with you, because not just anyone, not just any person has the ability to learn this Arabic language.

Saira:

• Arabic: آه، شكراً كتير زبيدة. وشكراً كتير يعني أنتِ ساعدتيني كتير آخر أسبوعين. وأنتِ بتحكي لغة الإنجليزية كتير منيح.
• English: Ah, thank you so much Zubaida. And thank you so much, meaning you helped me a lot these past two weeks. And you speak English very well.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أوه، شكراً صايرة.
• English: Oh, thank you Saira.

Saira:

• Arabic: عفواً. بس ثاني شيء، لازم نحكي عن السياحة في الأردن. يعني رحنا كتير أماكن مشهورة؛ البحر الميت، والبتراء، ووادي رم، وجرش، وعجلون. فممكن تخبرينا أكتر معلومات عن هذا السياحة؟
• English: You're welcome. But secondly, we must talk about tourism in Jordan. I mean, we went to many famous places; the Dead Sea, Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash, and Ajloun. So could you tell us more information about this tourism?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أنا عندي سؤال لكِ، وجاوبيني عليه. حسب اعتقادكِ إنه هل كل أوروبا أو لندن بيعرفوا جمال الأردن زي ما أنتِ شفتيه بعينكِ؟
• English: I have a question for you, and answer me. In your opinion, do all of Europe or London know the beauty of Jordan as you saw it with your own eyes?

Saira:

• Arabic: بصراحة لا زبيدة. في يعني في كتير أشياء حلوين هون، بس الناس ما بيعرفوا يعني شو هو البتراء أو وادي رم أو... يعني لازم الناس بيشوفوا مع عيونهم، والصور مش بكفي، ما بيكفي.
• English: Honestly, no, Zubaida. There are, meaning there are many beautiful things here, but people don't know, meaning what Petra is or Wadi Rum or... I mean people need to see with their own eyes, and pictures are not enough, it's not enough.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: يعني بدك تحبي إنه كل أصدقائكِ أو كل معارفكِ ييجوا يجربوا السياحة بالأردن، وقد إيه هي حلوة، وقد إيه هي جميلة الأردن؟
• English: Meaning you would like all your friends or all your acquaintances to come try tourism in Jordan, and see how sweet it is, and how beautiful Jordan is?

Saira:

• Arabic: آه أكيد أكيد! آه أكيد. ومشان هيك أنا هاي ثلاث مرات أنا زرت الأردن. في كتير ولسه في كتير أماكن اللي لسه أنا ما رحت فيه، شفتيها. آه شفتيها، شفتها، آه آه.
• English: Oh sure, sure! Oh sure. And that's why this makes three times that I've visited Jordan. There are many, and there are still many places that I haven't gone to yet, to see them. Ah, to see them, I saw it, yeah yeah.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: وكمان الأردن بتحكي كتير عن الآثار فيها القديمة، وبتحكي كتير عن حروب مرّت وتجارب كتير أنتِ يمكن شفتيها، وشفتي آثارها اللي ما زالت موجودة في ايش؟ بالعصر اللي كتير قديم. يعني وحكينا عن الديد سي، بالبحر الميت، وحكينا كمان عن الكهف الموجود هناك اللي شفنا، وزوجة... بقايا زوجة لوط كيف موجودة. وبعدين رحنا على وادي رم، وشفتي جمالها، وشوفتي...
• English: And also, Jordan speaks a lot through its ancient antiquities, and speaks a lot about wars that passed and many experiences that you perhaps saw, and you saw their remains that are still present from what? From a very ancient era. I mean, we talked about the Dead Sea, and we also talked about the cave located there that we saw, and the wife... the remains of Lot's wife, how it is located. And then we went to Wadi Rum, and you saw its beauty, and you saw...

Saira:

• Arabic: صحراء.
• English: The desert.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: الصحراء. احكي لنا أنتِ أكتر ايش لقيتي؟ شي شي كتير مختلف، لأنكِ أنتِ سافرتِ كتير بلاد، لكن أنتِ للمرة الثالثة أنتِ زرتِ الأردن، وبتشوفي الأماكن اللي أنتِ كتير حبتيها. فليه أنتِ كتير عدتِ هاي التجارب؟ فاحكي لهم ايش شفتِ بالبتراء ووادي رم. أنتِ شو شفتِ بالبتراء؟ شو مارستِ هواياتكِ هناك ايش؟ شو سويتِ؟
• English: The desert. You tell us more, what did you find? Something, something very different, because you have traveled to many countries, yet for the third time you visited Jordan, and you see the places that you really loved. So why did you repeat these experiences so much? Tell them what you saw in Petra and Wadi Rum. What did you see in Petra? What hobbies did you practice there, what? What did you do?

Saira:

• Arabic: بس بتمنى كل الناس بيزوروا للأردن. بتمنى.
• English: I just hope all people visit Jordan. I hope so.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: يعني حبيتي البتراء كتير؟ وشفتي كيف طلعنا الصبح على البتراء، ورحنا شفنا المدينة الوردية والخزنة، وضلينا ماشيين لمدة أربع ساعات، وأخذنا صور كتير حلوة. وشوفتي قد إيه إنها هي قديمة، وكيف إنه هي من طبيعة ربنا، وإنه هي من العجائب السبعة، إنه هي تستحق هذا اللقب، لأنها جميلة جداً ومش موجودة ولا بأي مكان بالعالم.
• English: Meaning you loved Petra a lot? And you saw how we went up in the morning to Petra, and we went to see the Rose City and the Treasury, and we kept walking for four hours, and we took very beautiful pictures. And you saw how old it is, and how it is from God's nature, and that it is one of the Seven Wonders, that it deserves this title, because it is very beautiful and doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.

Saira:

• Arabic: بس لازم الناس بيشوفوا مع عيونهم. بس إذا بيشوف... شوفي يعني البتراء يعني بالموقع أو الإنترنت مش... يعني بيشوف البتراء مع عيونك هون.
• English: But people must see with their own eyes. Because if they see... see, meaning Petra on a website or the internet is not... I mean, see Petra with your eyes here.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: شو طبعاً أكيد. بعدين رحنا على وادي رم، وشوفنا المدينة الصحراوية الجميلة، وشوفتي قد إيه فيها جبال عالية وصخور، وإحنا طلعنا على صخور وشوفنا الغروب من فوق، وشربنا الشاي من فوق، ونزلنا لعند التراب، ورحنا على وادي رم...
• English: Yes, of course, absolutely. Then we went to Wadi Rum, and we saw the beautiful desert city, and you saw how many high mountains and rocks are in it, and we climbed onto the rocks and saw the sunset from above, and we drank tea from up there, and we went down to the sand, and we went to Wadi Rum...

Saira:

• Arabic: المسير الليلي كمان.
• English: The night walk too.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: آه، بالمخيم بالكامب، اسمه واحة رم. قد إيه كان جميل، وقد إيه كان حلو، وقد إيه كان في سهرة رقصنا، وبعدين شو عملنا كمان؟
• English: Ah, in the campsite, at the camp, its name is Wadi Rum Oasis. How beautiful it was, and how nice it was, and how much of an evening party we had where we danced, and then what did we do as well?

Saira:

• Arabic: المسير الليلي كان بيجنن! بس تجربتي واو! أنا... بصراحة زبيدة ما عندي كلمة بالإنجليزي ولا العربي... بس بيجنن عنجد!
• English: The night walk was amazing! My experience was just wow! I... honestly Zubaida, I don't have the words in English or Arabic... it's just truly amazing!

Zubaida:

• Arabic: تمام، حلو. طيب، وكتير استمتعتِ لما حسيتِ نفسيتكِ مع الطاقة الإيجابية، وكيف حطينا الشموع بالليل مع هالمسير الليلي، وعملتِ استرخاء، و... يعني لقيتِ حالكِ فعلاً إنسان وشخص جديد؟
• English: Great, nice. Well, and you really enjoyed it when you felt your state of mind with the positive energy, and how we put out candles at night with this night walk, and you did relaxation, and... I mean did you genuinely find yourself to be a new human being and person?

Saira:

• Arabic: أه أه أكيد، بالضبط!
• English: Yeah, yeah sure, exactly!

Zubaida:

• Arabic: وحسيتِ إنه كل شيء سيء بحياتكِ إنه خلص فينش، راح؟
• English: And you felt that everything bad in your life is just finished, gone?

Saira:

• Arabic: أه أه، أنا حسيت عنجد لايك أنا تركت شيء ما بتخليني مبسوطة. أه، فكل الطاقة السلبية راحت مني، عنجد. تجربتي حلوة كتير.
• English: Yeah, yeah, I really felt like I left behind something that wasn't keeping me happy. Yeah, so all the negative energy left me, truly. My experience was very beautiful.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: وشوفتي نجوم الليل قد إيه كتير حلوين لما نمنا على التراب كتير نظيف وكتير بيجنن؟
• English: And you saw the night stars, how very beautiful they are when we slept on the sand, which was very clean and very amazing?

Saira:

• Arabic: أه كتير، كتير كتير.
• English: Oh a lot, very, very much.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: وكيف تجربتكِ بالعشا مع الزرب؟
• English: And how was your dinner experience with the Zarb?

Saira:

• Arabic: أه، أول مرة أنا جربت زرب، أكل مشهورة...
• English: Oh, it was the first time I tried Zarb, a famous food...

Zubaida:

• Arabic: لحمة.
• English: Meat.

Saira:

• Arabic: لحمة في الأردن، بس كتير زاكي كتير كتير.
• English: Meat in Jordan, but it is very delicious, very, very much.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: هاي هاي اللحمة بتنعمل إنه بتكون مدفونة تحت الأرض الخاروف، وبيكون فيه فحم زي الرماد هيك بس هو مولّع، وبيدفنوه مدة ثلاث أربع ساعات، بعدين بيطلع بهذا الأكل كتير زاكي. وبعدين نمنا بالمخيم، وثاني يوم روحنا على عمان، وأنتِ ما كنتِ بدك تروحي! وشو ربحنا؟ ساعة من شركة... من شركة السياحة، صح؟ شركة مونتانا، طلعنا مع مونتانا، ولقينا... ربحونا ساعة. وشو... ليش ربحنا الساعة؟ شو غنينا؟ لما غنينا بـ...
• English: This, this meat is made by having the lamb buried underground, and there is charcoal like ashes but it's lit, and they bury it for a period of three to four hours, then it comes out as this very delicious food. And then we slept at the camp, and the next day we went back to Amman, and you didn't want to go back! And what did we win? A watch from a company... from the tourism company, right? Montana Company, we went with Montana, and we found... they made us win a watch. And what... why did we win the watch? What did we sing? When we sang in...

Saira:

• Arabic: أه، في أه أوكي. صيصان شو حلوين! عم غني...
• English: Ah, in yeah okay. "Cheesun, sho hilween!" (The chicks, how cute they are!) Singing...

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أطفال.
• English: A children's song.

Saira:

• Arabic: أطفال، مش للحفلة؟ لا، بالعكس للحفلة كمان.
• English: Children's song, not for a party? No, on the contrary, for a party too.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: طبعاً. صايرة، حبيتي الثقافة الأردنية؟
• English: Of course. Saira, did you love Jordanian culture?

Saira:

• Arabic: أه كتير بحب الثقافة الأردنية. بحب الناس هون عنجد لطيفين وكلهم بيساعدوني. وعيلتكِ و... بس عنجد بحس إنه عيلتكِ عيلتي.
• English: Oh, I love Jordanian culture very much. I love the people here, they are truly kind and everyone helps me. And your family and... I just truly feel like your family is my family.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أوه، يور ويلكم.
• English: Oh, you're welcome.

Saira:

• Arabic: وبيتكِ بيتي كمان. بس أنا قلبي مليان عنجد، وأنا كتير مبسوطة. وكمان أنا بحب كل الناس يأكلوا مع بعض. وعمان كتير... أمان؟ أمان بنفس الوقت.
• English: And your house is my house too. My heart is truly full, and I am very happy. And I also love how all the people eat together. And Amman is very... safety? Safe at the same time.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: سيف، تي. أه، كتير مهم. يعني هلا إذا بدنا نطلع بالليل الساعة 11 مش مشكلة، لأنه كتير الناس بالشارع هون أو بالحدائق و... أه، الناس بس بيستمتعوا الوقت مع بعض. وأنا حبيت هاي الثقافة بالأردن، أه بالأردن أه.
• English: Safety. Yeah, very important. I mean now if we want to go out at night at 11:00 PM it's not a problem, because many people are on the street here or in the parks and... yeah, people just enjoy their time together. And I loved this culture in Jordan, yeah in Jordan, yeah.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أنتِ عم تحكي إنه الأردن هي من الدول الكتير أمينة وفيها أمان واستقرار على المستوى الاقتصادي، والسياسي، والاجتماعي. فكتير الأردن حلوة، وكتير أمان فيها، وفيها استقرار ما فيها أي مشاكل. فيكِ تطلعي بأي وقت وتنبسطي بأي وقت. واحكي لنا كمان عن شمال الأردن. هلا حكينا عن الصحراء، بدنا نحكي عن الخضار، ونحكي عن المي الباردة والينابيع اللي شوفتيها بوادي الريان، واشتفينا، جرش، عجلون، إربد. كانت المدينة الخضراء بالنسبة لكِ.
• English: You are saying that Jordan is one of the very safe countries that has safety and stability on the economic, political, and social levels. So Jordan is very beautiful, and there is a lot of safety in it, and it has stability with no problems at all. You can go out at any time and enjoy yourself at any time. And tell us also about the north of Jordan. Now we've talked about the desert, we want to talk about the greenery, and talk about the cold water and springs that you saw in Wadi Al-Rayan, and Ishtafaina, Jerash, Ajloun, Irbid. It was the green city as far as you were concerned.

Saira:

• Arabic: بيجنن عنجد! أول مرة أنا زرت كيف... شو اسمه الشلال أو استراحة... استراحة الدب؟
• English: Truly amazing! The first time I visited, how... what is it called, the waterfall or rest stop... the Bear rest stop?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أه، عراق الدب.
• English: Ah, Iraq Al-Dub.

Saira:

• Arabic: عراق الدب؟
• English: Iraq Al-Dub?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: عراق الدب. أكلنا فيها أكل تقليدي جداً.
• English: Iraq Al-Dub. We ate very traditional food there.

Saira:

• Arabic: عراق الدب، وكمان استراحة ثانية... شو اسمها؟
• English: Iraq Al-Dub, and also a second rest stop... what is its name?

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أبو صدام.
• English: Abu Saddam.

Saira:

• Arabic: أبو صدام، أه.
• English: Abu Saddam, yeah.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: أكلنا فيها أكل تقليدي جداً، اللي هو زيت من الزيت. احكي لهم عن تجربتكِ كيف عجنتِ بإيدكِ وخبزتِ وكيف.
• English: We ate very traditional food there, which is oil from the olive. Tell them about your experience, how you kneaded with your hand and baked and everything.

Saira:

• Arabic: أه، تحت الأرض وفي فرن، أه وهي عملت الخبز تحت... يعني في الفرن، وكمان هي عملت الدجاج وبطاطا، وكتير زاكي.
• English: Ah, underground and in an oven, yeah and she made the bread under... meaning in the oven, and she also made chicken and potatoes, and it was very delicious.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: حلو، انبسطتِ كتير بشمال الأردن؟ وحطيتي حالكِ بالمي الباردة بالينبوع لما كانت ماشية بعراق الدب، وسبحنا جوا المي واستمتعنا؟
• English: Nice, did you enjoy the north of Jordan a lot? And did you put yourself in the cold water at the spring when it was flowing in Iraq Al-Dub, and we swam inside the water and enjoyed ourselves?

Saira:

• Arabic: أه كتير، كان في واحد من أحلى تجربتي بحياتي، يعني إحنا قعدنا جنب الشلال، وكان في أرجيلة والأكل، والرمان كتير زاكي. أه، وأه كتير أنا حبيتها كتير.
• English: Oh a lot, it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life, meaning we sat next to the waterfall, and there was shisha and food, and the pomegranate was very delicious. Yeah, and yeah, I really loved it a lot.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: وشوفتي قلعة عجلون؟
• English: And did you see Ajloun Castle?

Saira:

• Arabic: أه، كتير حلوة.
• English: Yes, very beautiful.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: كتير حلوة. وشوفتي كمان جرش؟
• English: Very beautiful. And did you see Jerash as well?

Saira:

• Arabic: جرش كمان، والبحر الميت، كل كل الأماكن المشهورة هون بيجنن.
• English: Jerash too, and the Dead Sea, every, every one of the famous places here is amazing.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: حبيتي ثقافة الأردن والسياحة بالأردن.
• English: You loved Jordan's culture and tourism in Jordan.

Saira:

• Arabic: أه، بس لسه مش متعودة... أوكي ممكن أنا متعودة للبشرية بشرب شاي وقهوة قبل بنام.
• English: Yeah, but I'm still not used to... okay maybe I am used to humanity drinking tea and coffee before I sleep.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: هاي عاداتنا بالأردن، إنه القهوة والشاي شيء أساسي بأي مكان. أبتتمني أصدقائكِ كلهم يزوروا الأردن؟ بتنصحيهم؟
• English: These are our customs in Jordan, that coffee and tea are an essential thing in any place. Do you hope all your friends visit Jordan? Do you advise them to?

Saira:

• Arabic: أكيد، آه أكيد أكيد! يعني زي ما حكيت لكِ إنه أنا هاي ثلاث مرات أنا زرت هون، وعشان بس البلد حلوة عنجد.
• English: Absolutely, oh sure, sure! I mean, just as I told you, this makes three times that I have visited here, and simply because the country is truly beautiful.

Zubaida:

• Arabic: حسيتِ بالأمان هون؟
• English: Did you feel safe here?

Saira:

• Arabic: كتير كتير كتير، أكتر من لندن بصراحة. يعني هلا إذا بدنا نطلع مش مشكلة، أوكي يلا لنروح نأكل كنافة. أه مش مشكلة عنجد، أنا بحب كتير أمان.
