The Historic Old Sweet Shop gets gold!
The Old Sweet Shop, a quintessential chocolate box cottage with thatched roof, on Vicarage Road in Minehead, has been awarded Five Star Gold by VisitEngland, and the highest accolade given by the industry’s national tourism body.
In this podcast (which was recorded before the Five Star Gold award), Lucy and David talk lovingly about the sweet history of this chocolate box cottage and the people who occupied and visited here, before our custodianship.
The Old Sweet Shop is one of four Exmoor Character Cottages that have achieved a Gold Award, along with The Oval, West Street, Dunster is Four Star Gold and Stone Barn, Vicarage Road, Minehead, Five Star Gold.
Lucy Green, owner of Exmoor Character Cottages, said.” We’re all delighted with the Gold Award for The Old Sweet Shop especially at the end of what has been another demanding year for our industry. We work hard to maintain our already exacting standards across all our four cottages, and we are pleased with this recognition by VisitEngland’s assessors for The Old Sweet Shop.
Achieving a coveted Gold award for three of our cottages is no mean feat and takes a huge amount of work and investment which we feel has paid off, not only for us, but for our valued guests and promotion of Exmoor as a quality destination.”
About our cottages.
The four self-catering holiday cottages in Dunster and Minehead sleep six to eight guests and are open all year round for short breaks and longer family holidays, and well-behaved dogs are welcome too. Facilities include hot tubs (Minehead) well equipped kitchens, beautiful bedrooms with their own bathrooms, private gardens, high quality entertainment systems and cosy sitting rooms with open fireplaces (except Stone Barn). The cottages are all Christmas decorated from the middle of November to give guests the opportunity to spend more time with their family and friends and a private chef can be organised for special occasions.
2021 was a record year for occupancy and 2022 is set to be even better as an increasing number of Lucy’s guests return to enjoy another of the cottages in either Minehead or Dunster. Lucy says. “Seeing valued guests again is such a joy to us, over the years our guests have become our friends and have spent many special occasions at their favourite cottage. And in 2020 12 launched a new in-cottage dining service for guests to book for a special birthday or anniversary or simply if they want a rest from cooking! Great reviews bear testament to each guest experience, whether for praising the cleanliness of the cottages, the joy of the hot tubs, the private gardens, relaxing comfortable beds and the service from Lucy, and her team, to their peaceful location and some great days out across West Somerset and Exmoor.
