All right today in the zone. I have an amazing entrepreneur. He's a success coach, health coach. He's got some cool videos out there. Definitely want to pick his brain about mindset. Of course, the skills to make it work is Victor DeDodge. Victor, welcome.
SPEAKER_02Thanks, having me on Keith. It's great to be here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, appreciate all your time. And for the listeners, we actually have never talked in person, which is cool, because I just saw some of your things and I said, Wow, I want to pick his brain. The big thing that I saw, and I'll kind of bring up some of the details, is that the way you talk about mindset, every single person can grasp the concept. A lot of times mindset, sometimes it's a little bit out there. It's a little bit, you know, hard to explain, but uh you're the way you tell stories and everything else like that is so everybody can resonate with it. Is that something that you've always had? You became a good storyteller, or you've just been in the in the industry? Like how did this come about?
SPEAKER_02I've just worked on it over the years and learned from other people. It's it's something you can definitely work on. So even if you don't have the proper mindset, you can definitely develop and work on it. And one of the most important things I think that really sabotage people is their self-talk. We say so many negative things to ourselves, and very often we're not even aware of it. Constantly we're saying things that are like, oh, I can't do this, I'm not capable of doing that, and all that stuff. And a lot of times we're not even aware of it. So that's one thing I really think we need to pay attention to. Uh, Dr. Shat Helmser wrote a great book many years ago called What to Say When You Speak to Yourself. And it made me realize how often I was sabotaging myself by the negative self-talk I was doing to myself. So that's something I'm I've been working on for many years, and that's something I recommend to people. So you might want to get a copy of that book. Watch what you say to yourself because it's probably the thing that does the most damage.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that's cool. Because one of the questions I was gonna ask is you know what can s anyone do right now? But there it is. That's the key right there. And and I get it, you know, self-talk a lot of times we want to diffuse the situation, make people feel feel comfortable. So we're kind of joking. Sometimes we joke at our own expense and we don't realize how bad it is. We we keep up in the ante, and then yeah, I imagine the self-talk. If people just kind of realize, maybe bring a recorder with you everywhere you go, a stenographer or whatever, and you realize like how much we joke, but our mind, I'd imagine, takes it a bit serious. Like, I mean, like what like some of the self-talk would be like, oh, I'm not good at that, or things like that. Is that what you see?
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. I'm not good at that, or I can't see myself doing that. I'm not, yeah, I'm not smart enough to do that, I'm not strong enough to do that. And we're constantly saying these things to us. And like you said, sometimes we joke about it, but you should also be careful about doing that because your subconscious mind, which makes the vast majority of your decisions, which is probably like 95% of them, will take it seriously. And it's really it's really what you say to your subconscious mind that makes the most uh difference. So you work on that and you have to do it day in and day out. It's it's like it's like your mind is like a garden. You don't have to do anything, weeds are gonna grow in it. You have to work on it, take care of it, you know, nurture it, and you'll have a nice growing garden with no weeds. Same thing with your mind. You don't have to do anything with it, negative stuff will come into your mind. So you have to constantly nurture your mind, say good things, positive stuff, and also surround yourself with positive, uplifting, successful people. Because you know, Jim Rohn always used to say you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with. And I really believe who you surround yourself with makes a huge difference. So look at the people around you. Are they lifting you up or are they bringing you down? If they're bringing you down, you need to get a new set of friends.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. And I I watched some of your YouTube videos, very little, actually, just so all this is fresh to me. But you came from the corporate world. Is that what kind of made you decide I want something different? Or was it just a money thing? Like what made you decide I need something bigger out of life?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was in the corporate for many years, and most of my experience there was very good. But so at the end, the last several years, it got very cutthroat. They got rid of people they didn't want there, and no matter how well you a job you did, you were at the mercy of people above you. If someone didn't potentially like you, and no matter how hard you tried, they controlled your future. And if they wanted to get rid of you, they did. And that's what happened to me at the end. Uh so I was let go. And I for a number of years I've been thinking about doing something entrepreneurial, you know, being my own boss, and just gave me the opportunity to do that. Now, here's the thing there's a big mindset shift when you switch from being an employee to being an entrepreneur. You start thinking, oh, everything's gonna be easy, but then uh there's so many things that can go wrong. You think you're gonna make a million dollars your first week, and then you realize that you don't have that credibility because people think you're some, you know, we worked in an office, and so they they're like, oh, now you're gonna be an entrepreneur. And then you also make a lot of mistakes because you don't know what you're doing. And if you try to start off without having some sort of mentor, it's gonna make it so much harder. So for those who want to get started, I really recommend getting a coach or a mentor. It's gonna make a huge difference.
SPEAKER_01You you mentioned a really good word there, mistake. And I think so many times the the pitcher of our business is like, oh, it's gonna be easy, or oh, I got this, or oh, I've practiced it. And then yeah, mistakes like I can't think of anybody that's successful in any industry that hasn't made a mistake. I mean, uh down to actors and actresses and like anything. Like I wonder if like people realize like a lot of times it's an excuse, like the one person says no, or I I goof this and oh uh it doesn't work or I quit. Like I'd imagine you see a ton of that.
SPEAKER_02No, absolutely. And you're gonna make mistakes. But here's the thing it's all right to make mistakes as long as you get the proper feedback and learn from it. You know, the the problem is is when you give up, like you said. A lot of people give up after a couple of mistakes, but you gotta look at uh the word fail is first attempt at learning, or for all I have learned. See it as a learning experience and see how you can do better. It's like when a plane goes from New York to LA, it's gonna be off course much much of the time, but eventually it makes corrections and eventually lands at the airport at Los Angeles. So you're gonna make corrections, you're gonna you're gonna make some tweaks, you're gonna make some adjustments, and that's okay. The important thing is you learn. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. The thing is, if you don't, if you're afraid to make mistakes, you will never get started and you will never accomplish anything. So it's better to have whatever you want, you want to write a book or write an online course, whatever. It's better to have version 1.0 that you can approve to get out version 2.0 and then to wait to make it perfect and have version 0.0, which no one ever sees. You need to get started.
SPEAKER_01I was just thinking, like, how many people say, Oh, I had that idea back in the day. Oh, I thought of that, oh, they they stole that idea from my head. Oh well, yeah, probably, but everybody has ideas. I I'd imagine if you just do something and do something horrible, it's better than nothing at all. Like, there's no way it can be that bad that there's physical harm to you.
SPEAKER_02Exactly. So, and and as as you take action, you'll get better, and you're you're gonna get your confidence will increase. Some people say I want to wait some confidence to take action. No, you have to take the action. You get better at it, then your confidence will increase.
SPEAKER_01Oh man, that's cool. And I like how you just put things out there, you're saying some really good stories. I every time I I take an airplane, I'm I'll be thinking about okay, yeah, there's there's scratches, there's turbulence, we gotta go higher, we gotta go lower, we've got to go around weather, whatever. Life uh happens. But one thing that I that I saw on YouTube is that you had mentioned about kind of like a you won like a lottery for an airline ticket. You kind of go through that story because that that's really cool. And obviously, it was I there's an abbreviated version, but uh I kind of want to know like how how'd that come about?
SPEAKER_02Well, when I was working in the corporate world and my old company, um they said, you know, if they do you could put in your business card, you know, everyone in the company, it was a small company, like 35 people, you get a business card, and and if you do certain other things, you get an extra business card you can throw in. So everyone was allowed to put in one business card, but they had a couple extra things they could put in two business cards or three business cards. And I was thinking to myself, should I put it in? Because I had some doubts too, but I said, you know, what the heck? You know, you never know what can happen. So two people won these trips. So you can go anywhere around the world, flew business class, and I was one of the two people who won. Now here's the thing if I didn't put my card in for the drawing, I would never won that trip. So I took some action. You know, nothing will happen unless you take action. If I didn't put the card in, I would never win that trip, but I put it in. I went on a trip, I decided to go to Hong Kong, had a great time there. It was an awesome city. It was my first time going to Asia. I flew business class, which is really nice and comfortable. I was treated like a king, and uh, all because I decided to put that card in. So you just never know. Don't be afraid to take a chance. You never know what can happen.
SPEAKER_01Wow. Uh that's amazing. Yeah, just the fact that you could just put it in there regardless. But if you do a little bit extra working, put increase your chance. I mean there's so much uh in in business and life and everything. So, what made you decide Hong Kong and how long were you there for?
SPEAKER_02Uh, probably about 10 days. I I've always wanted to go to Asia. I had several friends because I'm from New York City, so I had several friends that used to live in New York that moved to Hong Kong. They moved back there. So I said it's a great uh opportunity to visit Asia. Also uh get in touch with some friends, and they show me around the city. It is a beautiful city, very international. A lot of people there speak English, and if you take the trains there, the signs are both in Chinese and in English, and the announced the stations in Chinese and English, so it worked out fine. Honestly, to me, it seemed like a Chinese version of New York City, very international and a great place to go to, and really good Chinese food.
SPEAKER_01Or they just call food, yeah, like the episode of Friends there. Oh well, yeah, I'd imagine that yeah, this is before Google Translate and phones that can translate, and uh back then those were kind of the days when you could you had to kind of wing it, but uh it all worked out.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01So in New York, that that's awesome. We're we're part.
SPEAKER_02I live in the Bronx right now. I'm lifelong New York.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so uh I'm I'm assuming Yankees fan then.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_01Okay. She can't be going to Queens uh if you're if you're exactly it can't be met in it. All right, cool. And yeah, that I mean it's it's so neat to see people put themselves out there. Uh as you said, you know, put themselves out there, make mistakes. If you do the right things, odds are gonna increase. I mean there there's so much. And then a lot of times people are they they're they want to be humble. And one thing I I saw was that you said you focus on others in that way you don't really have to worry too much. Like to me, I was like, if you just focus on the prospect, uh if they say no, that's okay. It's it's about it's about them anyways. Like, is that something that uh you learn somehow as far as you know serving others and then the things are gonna work out?
SPEAKER_02Absolutely. Number one, you you can you can relax when you're talking to others and your focus is solely on them because you have their best interests at heart. Sometimes when you're a lot of people get started in various industries, like the network marketing industry or some of the other industries, is they're focused solely on the transcript. They say, I have to get this person. And I recommend focusing on transformation. You gotta focus on how can I serve them. You gotta focus on is there a sale to me? Can I can recruit them? Is this the best for them? Sometimes it's not the best thing for them. And but the thing is you should keep communication with them, even if they say no to you. People have a life-changing event happening on the average about every four years. They could they could lose their job, they could have a death in the family, a divorce, or something else. So you keep it touching. If you're gracious to them, even if saying they say no, they're gonna say, you know, I really like that person. I'm not ready to join whatever opportunity they have, but I want to keep it touching because he's a really great guy. So that's the thing you gotta focus on. Ask them questions, learn about them, their family, and just keep asking them questions and be detached from the outcome. Because when you do that, you tend to be better. When you're when you're like focused on, I gotta get this person to join me, you tend to do worse. And they can sense that hunger, that desperation in your breath. So be relaxed, just focus on how can Elman learn about them, ask a lot of questions. Keep and you know what? You don't need to necessarily close them on the first time. You may need to have several conversations with them. But the thing is, you gotta focus on asking them questions and learn about them. And you know what? Because you ask them questions, guess what? They talk about the person they love the most, themselves. And the more they talk, they're gonna, the more they're gonna like you, and they're gonna say, you're a really great conversationalist, even though you're talking five to ten percent of the time.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it it's great. Uh there, there's so much impact there. Obviously, yeah, nine out of ten people will join the first time. And of course, yeah, just asking questions, like it's so much easier to remember what to ask than it is to remember what to say that. Oh, I got impressed by this fancy word and this special uh ingredient comp plan, whatever. Just it just it drives me crazy. And then realize, like, yeah, people love listeners, and uh they'll love us if we ask ask questions. Now, did this come natural to you, or is this something that you learned?
SPEAKER_02No, I I learned because when I first got started, I did what a lot of people did. I made the mistake of trying to spam everyone my links to say join me and join me. A lot of people ignore me, they blocked me, they cursed me out, and I rarely got anyone to join me. So I learned the hardware because I was focused on transactions that are transformation. And then uh a certain successful people recommended reading the book How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, which is a great classic. And I recommend every entrepreneur read that book because it taught me the importance of listening. Just focus on the other person, it makes all the difference in the world. And this will happen if you go on a first date, too. If you're talking all about yourself, though, you're not you're rarely going to get a second date. But if you're asking questions about your date, your date's probably gonna like you more. So I learned that. And the more I learned about asking questions, and I'll be honest with you, I've learned in my experience when I'm doing 80% of the talking, it rarely works. When I do 80 to 90 percent of the listening, I have a lot more success. So um, that's one thing I recommend to everyone. Notice how you do when you talk a lot more versus when you listen a lot more. You will find that you have a lot more success when you listen. And uh one more thing about I wanted to mention before, uh uh to think about when someone says no, don't think about a lot of people when they get rejected, they think of it as a loss. You shouldn't. Because here's the thing say I have no one in my organization. Um, you know, if I asked someone to join me, if they say yes, I got someone that I got another person in my organization. But if they say no, guess what? I had no one before in my organization before I asked them, and I still have no one in my organization. Nothing changed. I didn't lose anything. So at the worst, you remain the same as you were, but if they say yes, you have someone that joins you. So never think about it as you lost someone if someone says no, because you're at the worst in the same position as you were before. And if you you do if you left a good impression, maybe down the road that person will join you. So I would say keep that in mind.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, that's good. And you probably learned something. You probably learned, okay, don't ask that question, or maybe I should be asking more questions. I mean, there's so much to uh to learn. And I love the thing with timing, because yeah, we don't know what's going on in their life. Uh they may they may not tell us. They might have won the lottery, they're good. Yeah, just never know. Absolutely. Uh well, you mentioned some really good books, uh, How to Win Friends and Influence People. I think that's probably the most common one that people uh talk about. And you mentioned a book at the very beginning. I want to make sure I I write that down and everyone uh listens to that one. The one about uh self-talk. Which one was that?
SPEAKER_02Dr. Shad Helmstetter, what to say uh it's I believe it's called What to Say When You Speak to Yourself. Dr. Shad Helmstetter is the name of the author. What to say when you speak to yourself or talk to yourself. I can't remember if it's talk to yourself or speak to yourself. But look up Dr. Shad Helmstedter and the book will pop up. It's uh it's a really good book. So those, yeah, those two I highly recommend. And that book again really changed the way I did my self-talk. So I'm much more careful about the things I say to myself.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. And you had also mentioned, yeah, just like the garden, you gotta we gotta take care of it. Uh or or weeds will go in. Now, is it are you more of a reader, audio, is there something that obviously you've created that habit. But for some people, do you recommend people do stuff in the morning, at night, at their leisure, whenever it works? Like what's your kind of go-to when you tell people, hey, you yeah, you need to you need to get the weed eater out.
SPEAKER_02Well, uh, for a lot of people, yeah, whenever they can do it, it's it is good, but I would say the best times to do it are either the first thing in the morning or the last thing at night, because the first hour of the morning is when you're kind of in a semi-hypnotic state. Uh you're in your your subconscious mind is very impressionable the first hour of the day, and also the last hour of the day, your subconscious mind is very impressionable. So if you're reading good books, watching good videos, doing affirmations, stuff like that, it's going to really impress upon the subconscious mind. Think about it this way: if you watch a scary movie right before you go to bed, you're likely to have nightmares because that's when it's really hitting you upon your subconscious. That's why, you know, right before going to bed or first thing in the morning is when you really should do these things to work on your mind.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Uh we're we're thinking the same thing. Uh scary movie, yeah. Forget about it. It's gotta be, it's gotta be the sun's gotta be out. Uh yeah, I'm I'm kind of the same way. Like the first thing, number one, you haven't messed up your schedule, things haven't pumped compiled, things haven't been put off. And of course at night, yeah, I mean, we're gonna be asleep for whatever, six to ten hours. Hey, uh, you might as well put some good stuff in there to feed it. I mean, so much, so much. Especially if you uh if you did the self-talk book, I'd imagine that that that that's gotta help your sleep. Definitely Yeah, I know you've been involved for so long that a lot of things have become a habit. And you said that yeah, you said the wrong things and you've you've made all the mistakes. Everybody's made mistakes. Um is there anything else that that made like a big difference in your entrepreneur mindset?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so in addition to those things, just being consistent. You just gotta work on things day in and day out. Consistency will beat intensity every day of the week. Consistency is why the tortoise beat the hair. So it makes all the difference in the world. You want to have big muscles, you don't just work out three or four times intensely one week and then start for two weeks. You gotta go two or three times a week, every single week. And the other thing I would recommend is uh something I learned from Jack Canfield, because I'm certified by him as a success trainer. His first success principle is take 100% responsibility for your life. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't. They like to blame everything else outside of them, their boss, the weather, the government, you name it, they'll blame it. But when you take full responsibility, everything changes. Because when you don't take responsibility, you're less likely to become solution-oriented, you're less likely to take action. When you take full responsibility, you're you're likely to take that action that can help you achieve that success. And he uses this equation, E plus R equals O. E is the event. Everyone has the same event happen to them, but R is your individual response. Not everyone will respond to the same event the same way. And the outcome is dependent on the response to that event. So you have power in your response. And when you realize you have that power, it makes all the difference in the world.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a good thing that take responsibility. I've never seen anybody that's successful that doesn't take responsibility. Yeah, there's plenty, or on the opposite, people that blame everything. The weather, like the the most random things people will blame. And then like if they may get lucky and they'll be like, Well, I just got lucky, well, then they're not gonna get lucky again. They're not just they're just uh they're they're like winning the lottery and then then blowing it all in two years, like that type of personality. Um, which unfortunately happens more often um than not. That's why we have uh books and and things on mindset. Yeah, I love Jack Canfield. I actually saw him speak, oh geez, over 20 years ago. Uh they're in Dallas area, in the Dallas area. Really cool guy, and uh costing some great books. What are some of uh the favorite books that you recommend that's from him?
SPEAKER_02Well definitely start out with the success principles. It's a really good book. It's uh you know, he c it's it's what he uh moved on to when uh when he stopped doing Chicken Soup for the Soul book series, which he did with Mark Victor Hansen. So I I would definitely recommend that The Power Focus, The Aladdin Factor. Um so those are some of the other books I definitely recommend by him. He's and you know, and when you meet him, he's one of the most humble, friendly guys you'll ever meet. So he really is a really good guy. But yeah, if you if you had to get just one book, get the success principle because it it covers his 40 years of success training. And then he updated it ten years later to add some more things like social media because he realized that was also important. So I would definitely recommend that. So that and the other two books I definitely recommend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean everything that that I've read from him uh just like anything in uh the in skills it like it it applies to your entire life, not just in business. Like um I just said mindset. I know you mentioned like we skills are important as well, but like just yeah, some of the things you have on mindset is uh is uh is pretty powerful. And yeah, I remember checking through from soul she's 30 years ago now, uh, when they first got really popular, and there's so many different versions, so many cool things out there. And uh yeah, kind of glad that uh uh you mentioned him. So you're a certain five. Coach with him, what are some of the other things that you guys focus on?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we so we talk about a whole bunch of different things. We talk about persistency, we talk about consistency, we talk about getting a coach or a mentor, and we talk about success leaves clues. Try not to figure it all out on your own. You know, and it's true. That's true, that quote is generally attributed to Tony Robbins, but it's probably being said by other people. Learn from other people who've done it before you. So you can use some of these successful people as mentors. You can read their books, you can go on YouTube and find listen to some of their videos. So you can learn some things. Maybe at this moment you cannot afford to pay for a mentor, and that's fine, but you can use these guys kind of as a mentor in the meantime. So that's gonna help you learn some of the things you need to do to become successful. Uh, one of the things he talks about is get out of the aid at awful club, which is what I was talking about. Stay away from the very negative people because they're gonna drag you down. And uh imagine yourself uh as being successful, visualization, meditation, all those things are extremely important, writing goals down, going over your goals. Uh, you know, all those things are extremely important, affirmation, writing down affirmation, going over, and when you go over them, say it with a lot of feeling because your subconscious mind reminds uh response to emotion. If you just say, Yeah, I'm gonna be a success, I am successful, I'm doing well, it's not gonna pick up. You're saying, I am a great person, I am a success. You gotta say it with a lot of emotion and feelings. So it we talk about a lot of those kinds of things. So, you know, it it's really a lot about just taking action. You know, you know, the words attraction and satisfaction, the last six letters is action. So taking action makes all the differences all. The successful people are the ones who do take the action and they learn from the same. And we talk about getting feedback and learning from the feedback. So a lot of things I've talked about uh today is what I've learned from working with the success principles under giant canfield. So you gotta apply those things, you gotta apply the mindset. Work on your subconscious mind, it's something really important. And when you talk to people, just you know, just be relaxed with them, you know, just just don't be afraid of rejection. A lot of people are afraid of rejection, which is why they never take action. That's why I said when you talk to them, realize at the very worst, you'll be in the same position as you were before, but you may get someone to join you. But if you never take the action, here's the thing: you if if you never ask, the answer will always be no. But if you ask, you may get a yes.
SPEAKER_01Man, good stuff, and I love how you say you have to apply it. Apply, implement, it's all the same. Everyone's been guilty of it. Like I'm sure you've done it as well. Like I went to a workshop, read a book, did a course, uh, did a weekend, and uh it was exciting. You didn't implemented nothing. You life uh your mind changed, but you know, you haven't done anything. We all done it. We've all done not doing it.
SPEAKER_02You're so right. If you go to like a workshop or seminar, you know, for the weekend and you learn all great things, but if you don't implement them, it's not really gonna stick. And you really need to start implementing within the first 28 to 48 hours to release for it to start sticking. As soon as you come out, you know, you can go to any kind of great seminar saying, oh man, you can go rah-rah and all that stuff. But do you take action any of the stuff that you learn and you really should do it as soon as possible? The sooner you can do it, the more it will stick in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. And it kind of brings back the emotional response, how you felt at the event, how you knew that things could happen. There's so much that that we can impact. But wow, this uh this is some good powerful stuff, obviously. Uh anything else you'd like to share? Because uh time's been flying.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Like I said, when you're talking to people, just focus on the other person, be relaxed, be detached from the outcome. When you're detached, you're gonna do much better, you're gonna be a lot more relaxed, and focus on, you know, how can I help this person? How can I serve them? And just you know, develop these relationships, keep keep in touch with them, and you never know when they may happen. Too often people want results to happen yesterday because we're in this uh age of instant gratification. We want things to happen yesterday. But here's the thing when we were uh a farming society 100 years ago, we knew it took time. The farmer would plant, he would cultivate for five, six months, and then he would harvest. Too often we want to harvest and we want to plant and harvest the next day. Great things take time. A tree could take many years. The bamboo tree, you may have heard of that parable. Like it's watered and nurtured, nothing happens underground for five years. Then in the fifth year, within two or three months, it grows 90 feet. Now, did it do that immediately? No, it took five years. So you have to be patient sometimes. Great things take time. A baby takes nine months to develop. If you do the right things consistently, you will get results. Always remember that. So be patient with yourself. Some of these things take a lot of time, and especially getting started as an entrepreneur, it's really gonna happen immediately, especially you're gonna make mistakes. But if you learn from the successful people, you learn from the mentors, you apply it, be consistent. Eventually, you're gonna get results.
