Romans Episode 13 we pick up in Chapter 5, verse 1 and continue to verse 21.

Romans 5:1

(1) Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

John 16:33

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

We have peace in the Messiah that the world cannot understand, but it works different than the peace the world offers.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Romans 5:2-5

(2) By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

(3) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

(4) And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

(5) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Staying with the original theme of peace in Christ, the peace this world gives tells you, if you have x amount of dollars in the bank, if you drive this model car and you still have money to golf with your friends then you have the peace that this world has to offer.

But we are told;

Matthew 6:19-21

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The peace that we have in Him isn’t contingent on the markets, or in our collection of things. Our peace has already been purchased by Him, if we choose to trust Him!

Luke 12:27-32

Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these.

But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!

And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not keep worrying.

For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things.

But seek His kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.

I don’t know when you will be listening to this. Right now you may not be able to see why I am emphasizing peace so strongly right now in Romans, but faith in our Messiah is what Romans is all about. As I’m recording this the world is standing on the precipice. Five years from now you may only have your walk with God and nothing else, so if I can emphasize peace to you and you can carry it with you into the future and face whatever this world throws knowing He has your back, then studying, recording, editing, money spent, it’s all worth it if it helps you stand a little straighter and a little more confident in Him.

Romans 5:5

(5) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Hope maketh not ashamed!

Romans 5:6-10

(6) For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

(7) For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

(8) But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

(9) Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

(10) For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

If He was willing to go to the cross for you when you were His enemy to reconcile you to Himself, what is He going to do in your behalf when you have become His child?

I Corinthians 6:19,20

What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Romans 5:11

(11) And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Let’s get a different translation here to help out;

Romans 5:11

(11) And not only this, but we also celebrate in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Although I chose not to use the Amplified Bible for clarification, in the Amplified notes it makes this reference to Jeremiah,

Jeremiah 9:23,24

Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

To those that believe we think we are working our way to heaven, we just read in Romans 5:10 that we were the enemies of God and now in Jeremiah we find that we can only glory in the Lord’s exercise of lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness!

Romans 5:12-17

(12) Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

from vs 13 until 17 Paul uses parenthesis, Parentheses are used to enclose incidental or supplemental information or comments

(13) (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

(14) Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

(15) But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

(16) And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

(17) For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

I want to add brother Bernard’s comment here about the passage as a whole, this is from The Message Of Romans page 129,130

 “This is a difficult passage, particularly verses 12-14, because of the concise phrasing. The passage contrasts Adam and Christ as the two representative heads of the human race. It demonstrates that the justification principle applies to all mankind. All mankind needs justification and all mankind can receive justification. All humanity can obtain righteousness by one man-Adam-and all humanity can obtain righteousness by one man-Christ. The passage also forms a bridge to the discussion of sanctification, which begins in chapter 6.”

I hate to boil down both the Bible and brother Bernard’s comments, but in Adam all mankind has died both physically and spiritually since the fall, but in Christ Jesus all mankind has opportunity for salvation.

So many generations after the fall it’s hard to fathom what was lost in the garden, but let’s take a look at two verses in Genesis that say it all; Genesis 3:8,9

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

The Creator came down to commune with His creation but their sin put a wall between them and the One that loved them so much. The Lord says speaking through Isaiah, Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Isaiah 59:1,2

In Christ that relationship can be restored, leading the apostle Paul to say; II Corinthians 5:18-21

And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;

To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.

Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Romans 5:18-21

(18) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

(19) For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

(20) Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

(21) That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Let’s look at verse 20 in the NASB

Romans 5:20

(20) The Law came in so that the offense would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,

The law here is speaking of the 613 laws called the law of Moses, of which Paul says;

Galatians 3:19:

Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

The law of Moses showed the people their sins and the cost of their sins. The cost of their sins that Jesus, Yeshua paid for in full on the cross.
