Romans 6:1-12  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?  (2)  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?  (3)  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  (4)  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  (5)  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:  (6)  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.  (7)  For he that is dead is freed from sin.  (8)  Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:  (9)  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.  (10)  For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.  (11)  Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.  (12)  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

(Romans 5:21)  That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

We finished chapter 5 last week. I read this final verse of Romans chapter 5 as a reminder. Here in Romans chapter 6 we shift gears. Romans 3-5 teaches us about “justification”, our unworthiness, the fact that, (Romans (Romans 5:6)  For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Sometimes in our walk with God we need to be reminded of where we came from. Sometimes God hasn’t brought us out the depths of sin.To paraphrase Sister Bowers, the wife of the pastor in Union SC; “Sometimes the difficulty of children of Holy Ghost filled parents to get the Holy Ghost themselves is they have been raised in a state of sanctification.”

Judah, just before the Babylonian captivity had become proud. Most people don’t realize the sin of Judah was not totally abandoning Yahweh worship, but they brought in other gods they worshipped at the same time. He had told them at Sinai; (Exodus 34:13)  But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:

(Exodus 34:14)  For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

So God tells Jeremiah;

(Jeremiah 31:28 NASB)  “And just as I have watched over them to uproot them, tear them down, ruin, destroy, and bring disaster on them, so I will watch over them to build and to plant them,” declares the LORD.

Before He could build them back up, He had to tear them down.

But I’m hunting wabbits again so we need to get off the wabbit trail and get back to Romans 6!

__________________________________________

(Romans 6:1)  What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?

(Romans 6:2)  God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?

I’m amazed that almost 2000 years later this scripture still isn’t understood by many so called “believers”. Many of the main line denominations will preach (2 Corinthians 5:17)  Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

But see nothing wrong with keeping the same lifestyle they lived when they became quote “saved” unquote. These denominations aren’t preaching the Acts 2:38 salvation that tells us to “Repent”, metanoeō- to change one’s mind!

Peter, preaching again in the next chapter to the Jews (Acts 3:26 ESV)  God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”

(Romans 6:3)  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

(Romans 6:4)  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

(Romans 6:5)  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:

(Romans 6:6)  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

The Lord speaking through Ezekiel says, (Ezekiel 36:26)  And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

(Ezekiel 36:27)  And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.

He fills us with the Holy Ghost to make us able to walk in His ways!

We have been baptized into His death. Paul tells the Colossians, (Colossians 3:5 AMP)  So put to death and deprive of power the evil longings of your earthly body [with its sensual, self-centered instincts] immorality, impurity, sinful passion, evil desire, and greed, which is [a kind of] idolatry [because it replaces your devotion to God].

(Colossians 3:6 AMP)  Because of these [sinful] things the [divine] wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience [those who fail to listen and who routinely and obstinately disregard God's precepts],

The believer indeed must not continue in sin!

Romans 6:7-12  For he that is dead is freed from sin.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 AMP  Do you not know that in a race all the runners run [their very best to win], but only one receives the prize? Run [your race] in such a way that you may seize the prize and make it yours!  (25)  Now every athlete who [goes into training and] competes in the games is disciplined and exercises self-control in all things. They do it to win a crown that withers, but we [do it to receive] an imperishable [crown that cannot wither].  (26)  Therefore I do not run without a definite goal; I do not flail around like one beating the air [just shadow boxing].  (27)  But [like a boxer] I strictly discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached [the gospel] to others, I myself will not somehow be disqualified [as unfit for service].

I say these things, not thinking myself to be SuperMan. Temptation comes to everyone, and everyone of us, one way or the other will come up short now and then. It’s just the way this existence seems to be, but the difference between a Holy Ghost filled believer and an imposter is the Holy Ghost filled believer will repent, get up, brush the dirt off and get to walking. The imposter believers the old Amy Grant song; “There's a wealth of things that I profess

I said that I believed

But deep inside I never changed

I guess I'd been deceived

'Cause a voice inside kept telling me

That I'd change by and by

But the Spirit made it clear to me

That kind of life's a lie”

She did have one part right anyway, she’s been deceived!

The Apostle John tells us; “1 John 5:2-4  By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.  (3)  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.  (4)  For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

I don’t mean to run off on a tangent here, but to make sure the nail doesn’t come back up you have to drive it deep;

Peter spoke of these people and their beliefs;

2 Peter 2:18-22  For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.  (19)  While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.  (20)  For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.  (21)  For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.  (22)  But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
