Brother Jason

(Romans 10:1-13 [KJV])
 Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.
 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.
 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.
 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

(Romans 10:1-3 [KJV])

“For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge”

I read this and I see myself in my mid 20’s. I wasn’t raised in the truth. My dad had taken me to different churches as I was growing up. At one point he had the Southern Baptist preacher at one of the churches we attended believing you spoke in tongues when you received the Holy Ghost. In my mid-teens I was a member of the United Methodist church and had my life gone as planned I would probably be Dr Jason DD instead of brother Jason with a PHD, (post hole diggers).

I married the granddaughter of an apostolic preacher in 1994, was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ in the winter 1996 and filled with the Holy Ghost in the spring of 1997.
I’m going somewhere with this if you’ll bear with me.
Our church had no concept of discipleship so myself and another brother that hadn’t been in too much longer than me had some wacky ideas about salvation.

“For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge”
We were holiness and we were proud of it but a lot of our actions were more of zeal and not knowledge. Holiness became almost a game of sorts, “I’ll see your thrown out TV and I’ll raise you a radio out the door!”. Our hearts were mostly in the right place but our actions didn’t really glorify God. For a couple years I wouldn’t even wear my glasses because of Isaiah the 3rd chapter.

When a portion of the exiled Jews returned to Judah during the reign of Cyrus they had seen what rebellion against the ways of Elohim could cause and during the course of time they came up with “KHUUM-ruh” these were regulations that “put a fence around the Torah” to keep one from breaking the commandments.
It’s not a bogus idea and on the surface it makes sense, but by the time of Jesus their fence had become justification “for” breaking the commandments in the Torah!
Jesus Himself gives us the example in Mark, 7:9-13 9 And He said to them, You have a fine way of rejecting [thus thwarting and nullifying and doing away with] the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition (your own human regulations)!
10 For Moses said, Honor (revere with tenderness of feeling and deference) your father and your mother, and, He who curses or reviles or speaks evil of or abuses or treats improperly his father or mother, let him surely die.
11 But [as for you] you say, A man is exempt if he tells [his] father or [his] mother, What you would otherwise have gained from me [everything I have that would have been of use to you] is Corban, that is, is a gift [already given as an offering to God],

12 Then you no longer are permitting him to do anything for [his] father or mother [but are letting him off from helping them].
13 Thus you are nullifying and making void and of no effect [the authority of] the Word of God through your tradition, which you [in turn] hand on. And many things of this kind you are doing.
(Amplified Bible)
When we begin making our own laws, no matter how sincere the originator may have been, we open the door for someone to misuse it. This may be an over simplification of what was going on in Jesus’ day but still, the point is there. They had zeal, but not according to knowledge. (Deuteronomy 4:2 [KJV]) Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

(Romans 10:4 [KJV]) For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth
I have a point that is going to take up a bit of time concerning another passage of scripture in this chapter, so I don’t want to belabor this, but it still needs clarifying.
We have already read what the apostle has to say;
(Romans 3:31 [KJV]) Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
(Romans 7:14 [KJV]) For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin
(Romans 2:25-29 [KJV]) For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law? For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
The righteousness of the law, this is what Jesus taught in the sermon on the mount; (Matthew 5:21-32 [KJV]) Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Jesus didn’t come to make life easier on us, if anything carrying the righteousness of the law is on a whole other level than keeping the law by itself.
(Romans 2:14-15 [KJV]) For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
(Romans 10:5-13 [KJV]) For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

This passage of scripture is used by the protestant denominations to lead people to lead people to salvation. Ok, it’s scripture. I get it. But it’s cherry picking scriptures. Taking this passage in the context of the book of Romans, Paul has already told the Roman believers to;
(Romans 6:3-6 [KJV]) Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

And;
(Romans 8:4-11 [KJV]) That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

(Romans 10:13 [KJV]) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved

This echoes the apostle Peter quoting the prophet Joel on the Day of Pentecost;
(Acts 2:21 [KJV]) And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

The only place we get the idea of how this was put into practice though happens in the life of Paul;
(Acts 22:16 [KJV]) And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

We know, we see time and again when people are baptized it’s clearly in His name. This is the pattern we have received and as apostolic believers it’s the pattern we maintain. As the topic changes a bit in the next verse we’ll stop here for now.
