Life Around "The Fire"

Jesus' Fifth Word: The Prophecy of "I Thirst" Fulfilled

David Season 56 Episode 8

Send us a text

The mathematical impossibility speaks volumes. Between 300-400 prophetic statements about the Messiah, all fulfilled by one man. The odds? One in a quintillion – a number so vast it transcends comprehension. This statistical miracle forms just one pillar of evidence supporting Jesus' divinity and unique role in human history.

As we continue our exploration of Christ's seven statements from the cross, we arrive at His fifth utterance: "I thirst." Far more than a physical complaint, these two words represent the fulfillment of yet another ancient prophecy from Psalm 69:21. When Roman soldiers offered Jesus a sponge soaked in vinegar, they unwittingly played their part in God's redemptive plan established centuries before.

This seemingly simple statement carries profound theological weight. Jesus thirsted physically, yes – but He also thirsted spiritually as He drank from the cup of God's judgment, a cup He alone could bear. In the weakest possible human condition, Christ defeated the powers of darkness, taking upon Himself the full outpouring of divine wrath meant for humanity. This divine exchange forms the heart of covenant relationship: Jesus taking our brokenness so we could receive His righteousness, accepting rejection so we could experience acceptance.

The implications transform everything. We no longer face God's wrath because Jesus absorbed it completely. He didn't just cover our sins – He obliterated them, casting them "as far as the east is from the west." Through faith in Christ, we become citizens of God's kingdom with access to His authority and power. As we grow in obedience, our faith increases, allowing us to walk in greater spiritual strength and confidence.

Have you fully embraced what Jesus accomplished when He said "I thirst"? Join us as we unpack the extraordinary meaning behind these two simple words and discover how they reveal God's heart to rescue, redeem and restore relationship with you.

Speaker 1:

there's an amazing point in the whole statistical thing concerning the life of Jesus From the point that he was born actually before he was born to his death, his resurrection and his ascension to the right hand of the Father somewhere between 300 and 400 prophecies about the Messiah he fulfilled. He fulfilled To give you an idea of that, the odds of just eight of those prophecies being fulfilled by one person is one in 100 trillion. To have somewhere between three and four hundred of them fulfilled is one to the seventeenth power, meaning one with seventeen zeros behind it. It's called a quintillion, a quintillion Meaning that there really aren't any odds available for one person out of everyone who had been born, who was alive and who would be alive, to have someone else come along and fulfill all those same prophecies no one. So there was really only one person who could do it, and it was and is Jesus.

Speaker 1:

That alone is one of the main reasons why I worship him as my Savior, my Lord. I worship him as God who came in the flesh and dwelt among us, in the flesh and dwelt among us, and that he has in store for us, those of us who believe in him. He has an eternal inheritance that is so profound that the scripture says that even if we could think or imagine what it might be, it's greater than that and, folks, I have a very vivid and active imagination that stretches way out there, and if I can think it and I can imagine it, it's still not enough. In fact, I'm involved in something that is supernatural, meaning it's not naturally something that I can do on my own. That is to live like Jesus, to be Christ-like. It's impossible for me to do that on my own. Same goes for you. We can't live like Jesus under our own power. It requires us being supernaturally endued with the power of his spirit, and that comes by believing in him. It begins by believing in him, believing that who he said he was and is is exactly who he was and is and will be. It begins by saying in our hearts I believe you, jesus, and I believe that you did all that. You did for me. I couldn't do it on my own, you did, did for me. I couldn't do it on my own, you did it for me. And by me placing my faith in you, you count that to me as righteousness. You count that to anyone who does that as righteousness, to all who call upon the name of the Lord, they'll be saved, saved from the wrath of God.

Speaker 1:

And we're going to touch in on the wrath of God in just a moment, because that topic, again by itself, the wrath of God, is sorely misunderstood and also misrepresented, because it really tends to make God out to be some sort of angry being that's just waiting to annihilate those who disobey. And that is such an unfortunate understanding of the heart of God, because his heart is to save us from the inevitable consequences of the acts of Satan and those who follow in his ways, that is, sin and death, rebellion, disobedience, has a consequence to it. And when you multiply it over and over and over and over and over again for centuries, just think about it. If it were done against you over and over and over a violation of who you are and what you stand for, in your face, violating it, eventually you'd put an end to it. And you think about it just in human terms. If someone is unfaithful to a person, someone who betrays their marriage vows, and they find themselves in the arms of someone else and they commit adultery and they're found out by their spouse, the reaction of their spouse is not something that's just nonchalant, like well, sweetie, I'm so glad you came to me to tell me about that. I guess I understand. We all have our troubles and you know, let's just not worry about that too much. Are you kidding me that one act alone produces so much conflict that we could spend the entire podcast episode about that alone and still really just barely scratch the surface, let alone having multiple hundreds and thousands of years of misrepresentation of who you are and direct violation of what you stand for, and direct violation of what you stand for. There's wrath. There's a consequence. There's a consequence to poor behavior. There just is, I would tell my children, disobedience brings pain, and when you disobey me, I'm going to correct you, I'm going to spank you, but you'd rather me spank you than you having a police officer, 10 years from now, put you in jail because you were still disobedient. It just got worse, and so there is a consequence.

Speaker 1:

But this aspect of wrath comes into play when we're talking about the seven statements and that's what we're talking about in this podcast series the seven statements that Jesus made while he was on the cross, and they are one Father. Forgive them, for they know not what they do. Second, I tell you the truth. Today you'll be with me in paradise. Third, dear woman, behold your son. And to John he said behold your mother. And to John he said behold your mother. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Is number four, and number five is what we're going to be talking about today. Is I thirst? Number six? It is finished. Number seven, father, into your hands. I commend my spirit, but today we're looking at I thirst, and I prefaced everything concerning prophecy and the fulfillment of it, because that statement that Jesus made on the cross was another fulfillment of prophecy, a statement that was given in Psalm 69, verse 21. Hundreds of years before Jesus ever died on the cross, ever died on the cross, david prophesied what Jesus would experience when he said in Psalm 69, verse 21, they put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my drink.

Speaker 1:

Now, again, on the surface that might seem a little bit coincidental, but when you put 300 or 400 other prophecies together that are so specific concerning the very life of Jesus that it is once again something that goes beyond there being any odds that someone else would do it and that only one person could do it, and that is Jesus. He is the way, the truth and the life. There are not many ways to come into a relationship with God. We can't meditate our way into it, we can't have a religious commitment and find our way into a relationship with God. It takes us placing our faith in what Jesus did and the fact that he cut covenant.

Speaker 1:

In what Jesus did and the fact that he cut covenant, a relationship agreement that is so strong. It was done in blood, a blood covenant relationship, and he cut it with his own life, because we couldn't own life, because we couldn't, and he drank from a cup that we couldn't drink from. In fact, on the night in the kingdom, and Jesus, hearing what they said, said to them. He said can you drink the cup that I'm about to drink? And they said, well, yes, lord, not really knowing the depth of what that meant. And Jesus said not now, but you will, because you follow me Now interesting way of putting things drinking a cup, because a cup represented more than just a beverage.

Speaker 1:

It represented something of a relationship experience, something to be done together, something to be done with meaning. When you drink a cup, when you share a cup, you share in the meaning of what's being spoken of concerning that cup, just like there's a cup of blessing. There's a cup of blessing, there's a cup of salvation, there's a cup of wrath, and that cup of wrath is what Jesus was referring to, that he was going to drink a cup that they weren't going to be able to drink from, and it was going to cause him great suffering because he was going to take upon himself the wrath of God concerning the sin of all mankind. He was going to bear the weight of the sins of the world, every heinous act that you can imagine, and some of the incidental acts that would consider to be white lies but nonetheless carry weight to them, all sins, all aspect of sins. He would bear the penalty for them on the cross. He would take them upon himself and crucify them and take the wrath of God, pour it out upon him, the separation from God, the very suffering he would take so that we wouldn't have to, so we could experience what he has, and that is eternal life, the very life of God. He took upon himself our life so we could experience his life, a divine exchange. That's covenant what's mine is yours and what's yours is mine, all of it.

Speaker 1:

When you cut covenant, you take upon the privileges and responsibilities found in that covenant, but also you take with you in the privileges. The strength of what's found in that one that you cut covenant with, and the strength that God has is superior to any power, any name, anything in heaven and on earth, under the earth. It's superior. He has all power, dominion and authority. And he said I give it to you, to me, to you, and I want all of you Give me, all of you in exchange for all of me.

Speaker 1:

Amazing, because in that supper that they had together, they drank from different cups and one of the cups was the cup of salvation. And he lifted that cup up and he said this cup is done in blood, my blood. New covenant. I cut a new covenant with you. It is the blood, it is the drink, it is the cup of salvation and I give it to you and it's in my blood. Drink it. Wow, that cup is not the cup of wrath, that's the cup of us entering into covenant relationship with Jesus. That's when we take communion, we take his body, the bread, and we take his blood, the cup, the symbol of him cutting covenant in his blood, blood on the cross. We drink it, we do it in remembrance of him, we do it in honor of him and what he did and in remembrance of the covenant that he made, so we can stand firm in saying to the powers that come against us I command you to leave in the name of Jesus, because I have covenant with him and I call upon the covenant power of God to drive you back. Hallelujah, that's good news, folks.

Speaker 1:

But Jesus again, when you think about what he endured just to get to the cross. He was deprived of having anything to drink. He was falsely accused over and over again by religious leaders. He was put on trial in a Roman court and found innocent, and yet the Jewish community of leaders wanted to kill him. They were so jealous but also driven by a power that they didn't understand, and it was satanic. Satan wanted to get rid of him, but he didn't know he was taking the bait. He thought he was annihilating and he was signing his death sentence right there, killing an innocent man. Death sentence, right there, killing an innocent man. Death sentence. The once upon a time dignitary in the course of heaven, is now guilty of the blood of Jesus and he will be dealt with accordingly. It's been determined and it will come to a conclusion when Jesus comes back and finalizes his sentencing. In the meantime, we have a battle going on, but the victory has already been won and the end is secure. We will experience difficulties, but not the wrath of God.

Speaker 1:

Jesus took that. When he said I thirst, that was the cup he said that the others couldn't drink from. No one else could drink from it but him. No one else could drink the cup of wrath except Jesus. He took upon himself the very outpouring of God's wrath while hanging on the cross.

Speaker 1:

It wasn't by accident that he said I thirst. It was in fulfillment of prophecy. He had the mind within himself, the strength, the commitment of the only one and only Son of God to his Father to fulfill what he said he was going to fulfill. He had the mind to say seven things. I don't know if I could say anything, or if I did, it would be vile. I'm sure Jesus did not say wait till I come off this cross, you're going to pay for it and I'm going to make sure of it, because you did me wrong. He said Father, forgive them. They don't know what they're doing. So same thing to me and you, because we've done some really off-the-wall things. Sometimes motivated by the powers of darkness. These people were motivated by the powers of darkness. These people were motivated by the powers of darkness. Sometimes it's by our own will that we do things wrong, but sometimes our will is infused with some outside sources that are evil. They're evil Regardless.

Speaker 1:

Jesus took upon himself the consequences of those acts when he said I thirst, and they gave him a sponge full of gall and vinegar, a drink made up by the Romans, and it was the cup. It was the drink that no one else could drink. Jesus drank it On the cross and he took upon himself at that moment the wrath of God, that which none of us could bear. He bore while on the cross, not in a state of strength, but in a state of extreme weakness. In the very weakest place a man could be. Christ defeated all the powers of darkness.

Speaker 1:

If you've ever encountered a demonic power in force, you can see that they are actually greater than your human ability, but they're not greater than God. And in covenant we have the strength of God given to us. We have the kingdom of God given to us. We are citizens of the kingdom of God given to us. We are citizens of the kingdom of God given to us. It overrides the kingdom of darkness and we can utilize that authority under submission to the lordship of Jesus. As we learn to walk with him. More and more, we find ourselves walking in more and more power because of more and more obedience, which brings about greater and greater faith, confidence, trust. You want your faith increased. Become more obedient. Confidence, trust. You want your faith increased. Become more obedient to the things that God prompts you to do, to say, to live out.

Speaker 1:

Jesus said I thirst. It wasn't because he was thirsty, even though he was thirsty. It was a different thirst. It was also a thirst for souls, for the souls of mankind, for you and I. He was thirsty for relationship with us and for us to have relationship with his Father, for us to have relationship with Holy Spirit, for us to have relationship with the Godhead, so we could become one, even as he is one, and join together as one, together with God, as one. That's the plan and to see the kingdom of God cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Citizens walking together, no longer experiencing anything pertaining to sin and death.

Speaker 1:

Jesus took it when the soldiers gave him that sponge and he took a sip. That was the cup. That was the cup. That was it. That was it. And that is when Jesus Broke loose. He let go.

Speaker 1:

You heard him saying all hell broke loose.

Speaker 1:

Well, that ain't nothing. All Jesus broke loose. He took the cup and the next thing he's going to say is it is finished. He took it, he took it. He took the wrath of God. He took being forsaken on our behalf so we could be accepted on his behalf. We are accepted on behalf of Jesus. Because of Jesus, we are accepted, not just accepted. We are clean, cleansed from our sins, no longer to be remembered. From our sins no longer to be remembered. They're cast away into the sea of forgetfulness as far as the east is from the west. They're cast into oblivion. Jesus didn't just cover our sins, he obliterated them. He redeemed us from the curse and now we walk in the blessing of God, the new covenant.

Speaker 1:

Hallelujah, let's pray. Father, thank you once again for who you are God, for what you're doing, how you once again, for who you are, god, for what you're doing, how you're doing it, where you're doing it, why you're doing it, to whom you're doing it to and through. Thank you, lord, that you're doing it to us and through us, and we submit ourselves to you, we offer ourselves to you as living sacrifices acceptable to you because of Jesus. We honor you, jesus, we exalt you. We thank you, holy Spirit, we give honor to you and invite you to manifest Jesus to us and through us, so we can walk in his steps and be formed into his image. We stand here in his name and we say amen, amen, amen, amen. All right, folks, I love you.
