Life Around "The Fire"
How To Tear Down Mental Strongholds And Rebuild With Truth
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
That jolt of insecurity can land in the middle of an ordinary day and suddenly you feel small, exposed, and “less than.” We’ve both seen how fast that inner voice can drag you back into old measurements and old shame, even after years of growth. So we slow down and name what’s really happening when inferiority and insecurity resurface, especially when life expands and the stakes feel higher.
We define what we mean by a spiritual stronghold or mental stronghold: a deeply ingrained pattern of thinking or behavior rooted in a lie, built over time through wounds, repetition, and emotion until it starts to act like a fortress. We talk through the most common forms, including addictions and coping habits, negative thought loops like anxiety and rejection, relational barriers like bitterness and trust issues, and “natural reasoning” that sounds smart but quietly says, “I will never change.” If you’ve ever wanted freedom but felt stuck in the same mental grooves, you’ll recognize yourself here.
Then we get practical about breaking strongholds and renewing your mind, not as a formula but as a set of principles you can actually use: identify the thought, ask what lie you’re believing, test it against Scripture, reject and evict it, and replace it with truth because your mind won’t stay empty. We also share a personal story of going from drug burnout and a fried brain to real mental clarity through daily Scripture meditation and participation with God’s Word and Spirit. If you feel like you’ve done too much damage, we want you to hear this clearly: there is hope, and your story is not over.

Welcome And Core Theme
SPEAKER_00It was recently, seemingly out of nowhere, I was doing some things around the house, and all of a sudden, I felt this feeling of insecurity and inferiority. Now, I'm 67 years old, right? And so I've seen a few things and done a few things, and in the process of
A Sudden Wave Of Insecurity
SPEAKER_00seeing and doing things, I've dealt with issues in my life such as inferiority and insecurity, at least once or twice. Probably more. I mean, really dealing with them, getting to the heart of the matter, and actually thinking that I was done. And you know what? For that period of time, I was done, and it was accomplished, and I enjoyed living a life relatively free from insecurity and inferiority. However, prior to that, it was a real nemesis. I mean, from as early as I can remember, I had feelings of inferiority and insecurity, and sometimes they were validated by the way that other people would react toward me. And so, yeah, but I mean, I was just at this particular point in time, I wasn't doing much of anything, and I felt that feeling again. And that feeling seemed to it kind of seems to reduce me to feeling like I'm about six years old. Like I'm like I don't really know anything, and that I really don't amount to much, and that's a lot of negative stuff pertaining to inferiority and insecurity as it relates to me measuring myself with other people. Always kind of feeling less then. But like I said, I had dealt with that, and I had thought that I had really dealt with that, and for that period of time, that was true, but now is different. Today is a different day, and there are different things that need to be accomplished now, and there are greater privileges as well as greater responsibilities. And I'm encountering things on a different level now. I'm beginning to encounter things on a regional level. I'm seeing things on a regional level, and so my heart is expanding, and so doing, I'm confronting powers that I haven't encountered before. The old higher levels, higher devils thing. It's kind of going on. Not kind of, it is going on. I'm encountering things of a resistance factor because we're advancing. The kingdom of God is advancing, and I'm marching along with God and his kingdom, and the kingdom of God is advancing. And so being on the offensive, we are encountering periodically resistance. And in this instance, there's resistance in my life concerning the stronghold, if you will. I'm using an old term stronghold. I'll define it here in a minute, but the stronghold or strongholds of insecurity and inferiority. And God has allowed them to come to the surface because he wants to deal with them again in my life. And so I'm passing these things along to you because, you know, I know in many of our cultures, the American culture being one of them, acknowledging one's weaknesses or things that are areas that we're undergoing development in, we don't typically, we typically don't talk about them except to maybe a therapist or rabbi or priest or a pastor or somebody who is not really involved in our day-to-day lifestyle. However, we here at Letter on the Fire have decided that, you know what, forget that. We're going to acknowledge openly when it's necessary and when it's beneficial, and I underscore beneficial, when it's beneficial to acknowledge
Why We Name Weak Places
SPEAKER_00them, to acknowledge it because it allows us all to feel like we're on level ground because we are. We are equal in value and we differ in function. There are no real superstars. There might be different levels of anointing and mantles and callings and so on and so forth, but we are equal in value. God loves us completely, uniquely, individually, and collectively, but we have different functions. But this issue of strongholds has come up again, and in some of your lives, I know you're dealing with it because I'm dealing with it. Other people that I talk to are encountering this. There then is a collective understanding. There's an understanding that collectively, God is looking to do something collectively with his body. And so there's things that are being moved. Things are adjusting and God's expanding, and we're going along with it, and there's opposition. But greater is he that is in us than he that is in the world. Meaning the spirits of darkness are not God's equal opposite. They are an enemy, but they are a conquered enemy. We're just in the final stages of wrapping that up. But there are still strongholds that we contend with in our personal lives as well as in the land that we live in, the country that we live in. But we're talking about personal spiritual strongholds that need to be dealt with in order for us to advance. And I'm going to move forward with the Lord. And so the strongholds in my life of insecurity and inferiority are being exposed again so they can be dealt with on a deeper level. And a spiritual, get I'm going to define this now. A spiritual or mental stronghold is a deeply ingrained habitual pattern of thinking or behavior rooted in lie. I'll say it again. A stronghold, a spiritual or mental stronghold, is a deeply ingrained habitual pattern of thinking or behavior rooted in lie. It acts like a fortified
What A Stronghold Really Is
SPEAKER_00fortress in the mind, built over time by repetition and emotion that controls your will and keeps you in bondage even when you generally want to be free. A stronghold does not appear overnight. A stronghold in our life does not appear typically overnight. It's constructed as it were brick by brick. The first foundation is the wound, like an experience of trauma, a hurt, or a deep disappointment that leaves a person vulnerable. The first brick, the lie. Believing a falsehood about yourself or others or God, such as I'm unlovable, I must be in total control to be safe, so on and so forth. The walls, repetition and emotion, repeatedly agreeing with that lie turns it into an automatic, deeply rooted belief system, or in other words, a stronghold. Now, strongholds may vary in types. There are addictions and habits repeatedly turning to substance or anger or lust to cope with pain, the addictions and habits, things that we turn to to cope with things. Negative thought loops. These are strongholds. Negative thought loops, constant struggles with anxiety, unworthiness, rejection, or perfectionism. Negative thought loops is a stronghold. Another stronghold is relational barriers, such as unforgiveness, bitterness, or deep seated trust issues that prevent emotional intimacy. And lastly, another aspect of strongholds is natural reasoning. Logical but ungodly philosophies that tell you I will never change or God doesn't care about this area in my life. How strongholds are broken. Breaking free
How Strongholds Get Built
SPEAKER_00is a process of tearing down the metaphorical fortress. We need to identify it, bring the hidden thought patterns into the light. Secondly, repentance and renewal, actively replacing the deep held lies with objective truth. You see, if we take something away, we have to replace it. Nature abhors a vacuum, and we like nature will not allow a vacuum to be in our life. It will be replaced with something. So if we take away pornography, it needs to be replaced with something better than pornography. Something godly. We can't leave it empty. We need to begin the process of actively replacing the deeply held lies with objective truth. And thirdly, taking the thoughts captive, training your mind to pause and evaluate whether negative thoughts align with the truth before acting on them. Now, identifying and capturing the thoughts. Now we're we're taking this a little bit further because these are important things to do, to participate in. They are not a formula because the formula is there is no formula, but these are principles and suggestions to be considered in allowing God to highlight ones that would be pertinent to your life. We're going to share as much as we possibly can with some of the remedy and not just the problem. Because it doesn't take wisdom to state a problem, it takes wisdom to work through the solutions. And so the solutions are what we're interested in. The solutions to destroying strongholds. Number one, identify once again, identify and capture the thoughts. You cannot defeat
Common Strongholds We All Face
SPEAKER_00a thought you do not acknowledge. You must acknowledge or you must monitor your mind and treat destructive thoughts like enemy intruders. The biblical command Second Corinthians chapter ten verse five, we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. The practice? Pause when you feel anxious, angry, or defeated. Ask yourself, what lie am I believing right now? Secondly, test the thought against Scripture. Once you isolate the thought, filter it through the truth of God's word rather than your emotions or past experiences. In this the biblical command, the biblical command, test everything, hold fast to what is good. The practice, ask if the thought aligns with God's character. If a thought says you are a failure and completely unlovable, test it against Romans chapter 8, verse 1, which states, there is now no for there is now therefore no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Thirdly, reject and evict the lie. Renewing your mind requires a conscious decision to stop feeding the negative thought loop. You must actively refuse to dwell on it. The biblical command, strip off your old sinful nature and your formal and your former way of life. Once again, strip off your old sinful nature and your former way of life. The practice, out loud or in your heart, state, I reject the lie that I am abandoned. God's word says he will never leave me. Replace the lie with divine truth. Number four, replace the lie with divine truth. Your mind cannot remain empty. If you just try not to think about what a lie
Five Steps To Break The Fortress
SPEAKER_00is, it will return. You must crowd it out by repeating and meditating on specific scriptures. The biblical command, fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely and admirable. Philippians chapter four, verse eight. The practice? Memorize and recite personalized truth statements based on scripture to rebuild your mental neuropathways. Memorize and recite personalized truth statements based on scripture to rebuild your mental neuropathways. That's powerful, man. Lastly, fifthly, meditate daily on the word. Mind renewal is a habit, not a one time event. It requires saturating your mind in scripture until it becomes your automatic default setting. The biblical command, keep this book of the law always on your lips, meditate on it day and night. Joshua chapter one verse eight. The practice read, write down, or listen to scripture first thing in the morning to set your mental trajectory for the day. Now, I gotta tell you that last part considering the written word of God. I was twenty years old, living in northern Minnesota, hitting Minnesota to be exact, and I was just coming off of a very long stint of drug abuse. Long meaning several years. And my mind, my brain, was pretty fried. And one day I was looking at my toolbox. I was going to the vocational college in Hibbing for automotive technician certification, of which I am. I don't use it, but I am one. Anyway, I was looking at my toolbox and I just felt so burned out. Meaning I didn't, it was just like I couldn't hardly put one sentence together. My mind was so fried from the drugs I'd used, I just threw my tools into the box and I went to this local church that I'd become part of, an Assembly of God church in Hibbing. On fire for the Lord, man. Good stuff was going on. And I came, I pastor happened to be there, and he was praying, and he was in the sanctuary praying, and I saw him and I just said, Hey, could I talk to you just for a second? And he goes, Yeah. I said, Man, God, I gotta tell you, doctor. He wasn't a doctor, but I called him doctor. I gotta tell you, doctor, I'm burned out. I burned my mind out, and I'm sick of it. He goes, Well, God's in the work of renewing our minds, but we have to participate. I said, What what what? He goes, see this book he had the Bible in his hand. He goes, This book will renew your mind. Take it and devour as much of it as you possibly can, memorize as much of it as you possibly can, and you'll find that in a year's time from now, you will not even recognize how you think and how you feel. It'll be that different. And you know what? It happened, it was true. It took a year about, but I noticed at the end of that year that my mind was sharp. And my mind, by virtue of meditating in the scriptures, both Old and New Testament, in the scriptures, my mind was renewed from the condition that it was in into a mind that when I attended a private college in Minneapolis, North Central University, North Central Bible College, my GPA, my grade point average, was an A minus, B plus, or 3.5 to 4.0 grade point average. From a burnout to one who's on the dean's list,
A Story Of Mind Renewal
SPEAKER_00because of the written word of God renewing my mind and my participation with it, and it filled the void. I drugs had been taken away, and the word of God replaced where drugs had been, and my life changed radically as a result of my neural pathways. My thought process, my synapses changing. Empowered by God's Spirit and His written word. So there is hope for those of you out there who feel like you've just done too much damage to your body, your brains, your whole system. Who cares what should matter? Anyway, it matters greatly. Because you are alive and you have a purpose. And God has a plan and a purpose for your life, and it ain't over, folks. We're now in a place where we're going to see more and more of God's presence being demonstrated across the nations because sovereignly is going to set the record straight as to who it is that he is. And his word is enduring, it's everlasting. And he's watching over his word to perform it. And we're living in a day and hour in which the prophetic words that he's spoken through the prophets are coming to pass in front of our faces again, just like they did in the first appearance of Jesus Christ leading up to it. Now leading up to his second coming, happening again, and it's escalating, and it's going to get stronger until he touches down on the Mount of Olives and they split wide open. And the King of Kings and Lord of Lords will enter in through the East Gate and take his rightful place on the throne in Jerusalem to rule and reign for a thousand years. Hallelujah! We're living very close to that becoming a reality. And in so doing, we lift up our eyes and we look and we say, Where does our help come from? Our help comes in the name of the Lord. It comes from God. He is our Savior, He alone is our Redeemer, and He alone is the one who will bring it to pass until it's finished. And when it is, we start a new era throughout eternity with God and those who have been washed in the blood of the Lamb. Powerful. Hallelujah. But in the process, in the meantime, we are to occupy and to advance, and in so doing, see the strongholds in our lives pull down as well as things in our communities
Hope, Purpose, And The Bigger Picture
SPEAKER_00changing, in our regions changing, in our nations changing, until the knowledge or the glory of the Lord will cover the earth as the waters cover the sea. Hallelujah. Let's pray. Father, we thank you once again for who you are, for what you're doing, for how you're doing it, where you're doing it, why you're doing it, when you're doing it. You're sovereign, and yet you call us to participate in your sovereign plans and purposes. Hallelujah. Holy Spirit, keep us in step with our Lord Jesus, transforming us into his likeness so that we walk with him and with you and with the Father in perfect unity. And we walk with one another in perfect unity. I pray these things until they become a reality. And I ask that you give us the strength, the grace to see accomplish this wonderful thing of the pulling down of strongholds. That our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against rulers. In heavenly and high places, we do not fight strongholds with a sword and a spear. Not by power, not by might, but by my spirit, says
